On-line networks, social capital and social integration: a case study of on-line communities in Malaysia.

Wan Jaafar, Wan Munira January 2011 (has links)
In 1996, Malaysia developed a national ICT policy intending to establish on-line community networks amongst all citizens as part of the agenda to prepare the nation to become a mainstream knowledge-based society and economy. As a country that has historically experienced uneasy tension between inter-ethnic social relationships, this research seeks to explore whether on-line social networking affects the forms of social capital and social integration found amongst diverse on-line ethnic communities (Malay, Chinese and Indian) in Malaysia. Six on-line communities were selected as case studies and the research was carried out in two stages. The first stage involved interviewing three different groups of participants: on-line community administrators, Government representatives and the general public; the second stage was a web-based survey of on-line participants. The findings suggest that the six selected on-line communities in this study show great potential for enhancing social networks and social capital across all members of different ethnicities. However, these are not significant enough to create social integration across all ethnic communities. Instead, three different trends of bonding and bridging social capital emerged across the six selected on-line communities. The first trend shows bridging social capital throughout both on-line and off-line activities in MalaysiaMAYA.com (social networking site), SARA (residential-based) and FamilyPlace.com (parenting and children). The second trend indicates that bridging networks were limited to on-line communication as seen in both residentially-based communities (USJ Subang Jaya and PJNet). In contrast, VirtualFriends.net (social networking site) only demonstrates bonding social capital developed in both on-line and off-line social networking. Considering these diverse patterns, it is argued that transferring bridging social capital from an on-line medium to an off-line medium is challenging. Factors of cultural capital such as language use and cultural and religious observations have been highlighted as significant in shaping community networking patterns. Overall, the issue of ethnic integration in the context of on-line communities in Malaysia remains, at best, a challenging factor for the formation of on-line/ off-line social capital.

This dissertation discusses the role of the on-line communities in the process of manufacture and movement of meanings in the world of goods through the ethnographic exploration of a list of discussion by email, the Pit Bull BR, dedicated to the American Bull Terrier. The study of this group went further ahead and sought to attain two other goals: first, to extend the understanding of the relationship between the consumers and their dogs; afterwards, they sought to contribute to a national scientific debate about the sociocultural aspects of the relationship between Brazilians and their pets. Throughout the research, we verified that the community Pit Bull BR is not just a resource used by its members to appropriate and cultivate the meanings carried on by the breed Pit Bull, but it also works regularly as a complete platform to the manufacture and to the movement of the cultural meanings related to the breed. The group came about as very engaged in the fight against the marginalization of such breed and of its owners, regularly involving itself in the reconstruction of the public image of the Pit Bull. We testified, however, that the meanings cultivated by the community vary according to the original social groups of the members of the discussion list. The final part of the dissertation discusses the implications of these findings in the understanding of the relationship of the consumers with their Pit Bulls, and of the role of the on-line communities guided for consumption in the systems of fashion and publicity. Recommendations for marketing practices and for the development of public politics related to the acquisition and ownership of pure-breed dogs are discussed in the conclusion.

Genetická genealogie a komunity vzniklé okolo ní / Genetic genealogy and communities formed around it

Pokorná Ročňáková, Lucie January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to introduce genetic genealogy (the genealogical DNA test analyzes samples of genetic material for genealogy purposes, mostly does not serve as a tool for health diagnostics, or it does not detect genetic predisposition or disorder) and to analyze the online communities around it. The thesis answers the question of the extent to which these groups differ from groups of supporters of the traditional approach (whose main focus lies mainly in archival research). On the example of several specific communities, the author tries to show what aspects are dominant in this new kind of online activities and critically evaluate them.

Možnosti využití sociálních sítí pro zvýšení konkurenceschopnosti / Using social networks to increase competitiveness

Holoubek, Vojtěch January 2010 (has links)
This thesis deals with online social networking. The goal is aimed at a specific web project to demonstrate and comment on the possibility of using the elements of social networks to increase competitiveness. The text is divided into six chapters. In first is introduced the concept of project, including the objectives and reasons for choosing the theme. The next theoretical chapter describes the history and theory, followed by presentation of successful social sites. There are written the best practices for success in social networking too. The theory is followed by analytical and practical sections -- there is the real web project (hobby site aimed at sharing of user manuals and procedures) described. These chapters are a crucial part of the whole work, there are described all parts of project making, from the analysis of the environment through the required "social" functionality to examples of implementation and discussion of future forms of product promotion. The fifth chapter then presents an assessment of previous sections; achieved outputs are compared (commented) with performance targets and expectations. This part contains also the expected outlook for the future. The conclusion sums up the whole project.

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao andrea santos comunicacao.pdf: 1244532 bytes, checksum: 92a8039baa4f4f70dc3510338811f65d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-27 / The present world is symbolic and ephemeral. It is called Post-Modern by the majority of theoretical studies in this search. Considering the concepts evident in post-modernism such as fragmented identities, sociality, presenteism, vitalism, on line communities and globalization, try in this study reflect how these concepts are present in the life of the individual users from on line communities, especially the gay person. So, theoretical studies by Post-Modernity and identity is possible by the authors: Hall (2001), Giddens (2002), Bauman (2005, 2003) and Ortiz (2006) for identify the assumptions that mean living in a cultural and globalized world. It examines the issues of gender and attempts to relate it with homosexuality / homoaffectivity. For this it considering the studies of authors such as Scott (1991) and Butler (2001, 2003). It is also theorized about the history of homosexuality / homoaffectivity identifying social relations that marginalized gay and locate where the knowledge studies of homoerotic are included. It done by Trevisan (2002), Louro (2001, 2004), Foucault (1988, 1979), Fry and MacRae (1984) and Butler again (2001, 2000). Then, the authors like Levy (1999), Bauman (2003, 2001), Maffesoli (2006) and Lemos (2004, 2008, 2002), discusses the cyberculture and cyberspace and identify the concepts of aesthetic communities , tribalism, presenteism, vitalism, hedonism and formism in on line communities surveyed. For the theoretical contributions aims to: identify the constructed identities gays in on line communities hosted on ORKUT by speech analysis; understand if the gay communities have become ghettos and / or spaces of emancipation; know the concepts of what is to be gay from the participants speeches analysis, identify the issues that prevail in most discourses promoted by forum; know what the gays say to you in these communities; understand if the speeches were found in gay communities contribute to the construction of speech against; identifying the construction of the speeches and if there is space in on line power relationships that make the people positions. For these goals were possible, two ORKUT communities were select with the following characteristics: public gay male, Brazil, active communities in present day, with more existence years, that containing material (speeches) large enough for analysis and the sufficient participants number. Finally it is concluded that gays were different identities, So, identities are also in constant transformation. However, the gays speeches in many cases negative, are reflections of the suffering caused by the society prejudice present today. The gay prejudice is over only when the society deconstruction this prejudice through education / A atualidade é caracterizada por um mundo simbólico e efêmero, denominado, pela maioria dos teóricos estudados nessa pesquisa, de Pós-Moderno.
