Applications of telehealth in the practice, upgrading of knowledge, and communication of physicians with their colleagues and patients in Canada

Vahedi, Irandokht 01 May 2017 (has links)
Applications of Telehealth in the practice, upgrading of knowledge, and communication of physicians with their colleagues and patients in Canada was explored in this study. The research used exploratory-grounded theory to investigate the opinions of practicing clinicians regarding the use of Telehealth. The study involved conducting semi-structured interviews with physicians who were using or might in the future use Telehealth in their practice. This study was designed to assess the major advantages and shortcomings that Telehealth has to offer in the field of medicine. The research found that clinicians predominantly had a very positive view of Telehealth, although some minor concerns were expressed with respect to the use of Telehealth in private offices and the home (rather than in the hospital). The data indicated that Telehealth can improve overall patient care by bettering the speed and accuracy of communication and diagnosis and the subsequent treatment of patients, saving physicians and patients time and money, reducing waiting lists, aiding the environment, reducing emergency visits and hospitalizations, addressing shortages of physicians (particularly in rural areas), increasing access to specialists, and enabling convenient distance education. These are just some of the many benefits of Telehealth which outweigh its disadvantages. This study also was designed to extract clinicians’ opinions on avenues for improving Telehealth, which thus led to implications for future research. Barriers to the use of Telehealth were found to include concerns about security and IT support, lack of public knowledge of Telehealth’s existence, and installation and maintenance costs for the necessary equipment in the private sector. The study suggests that Telehealth will become more widely available and accessible to the general public. The study also proposes that, through increased governmental support and funding, Telehealth should be advertised and promoted, researched in more depth (in part, to discourage misconceptions regarding Telehealth), collaborated on by stakeholders, and expanded. / Graduate

Engaging Teenagers in Online Ethnographic Participatory Design

Strineholm, Ioana Andreea January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to explore the implications of using online ethnographic participatory design in studying communication with teenagers in the context of Carbon Dioxide Theatre, a climate action research project. By developing multiple methods, tools and activities, the implications are understood throughout the teenagers’ engagement in collaborating and co-creating using online media. The findings are then organized based on the teenagers activity from three perspectives, by following the medium, the story and the feeling. The medium shows how social media platforms such as Snapchat and Facebook Messenger can be used in order to establish a valuable collaboration with the teenagers, the story presents how the teenagers are expressing their views, thoughts and dilemmas regarding the climate action topic, co-creating one Instagram account while the feeling offers emotions raised during the process. Ultimately, inspired from the study process, the paper suggests a design method for online ethnographic participatory design data collection, consisting of a set of cards and maps that can be utilized as a guiding tool in organizing and understanding the empirical data within an exploratory research context. / Carbon Dioxid Theatre

In Brazil, this reached an estimated 3 or 7 million blogs and 12.3 million users. There is, at the same time, another expansion: the collective forms of grouping those were becoming increasingly popular in our country. This research began of a proposal for linking the two phenomena, and makes it the context of this research. Blogs were welcomed as democratizing spaces of visibility - premise here challenged, with the hypothesis that happened just the reverse of what was described. Even at the height of its popularity, blogs operated as tools to aggregation and location, and not as devices for horizontal distribution of information and very broad. The association held recently between blogs and social networks (Facebook, Twitter ...) indicates that direction. The problem that lead the research claim that the readings that have become popular blog about the impacts of widespread fetishes that have staining the identification of the type of visibility and sociability, in fact, was produced by them. Then discuss this meant a phenomenon occurring only, or whether it also extends to new forms of online communication. The object of this research is how four collective use their blogs and their effects on the constitution of the groups themselves. Were selected groups that located in regions of entirely different characteristics: the creative core of Dirceu (Teresina, Piauí), O 12 (Votorantim, São Paulo), Dimenti (Salvador, Bahia) and Cauliflower Mincomunidade World (Curitiba, Paraná), and also the blogs of artists Dani Lima (Rio de Janeiro, RJ) and Thelma Bonavita (São Paulo, SP). The theoretical research focuses political relations between media, power, and collective body, especially the contribution of authors such as Kerckhove (2009), Lemos (2003, 2009), Recuero (2003a, 2003b), Primo (2008a, 2008b ) Katz and Greiner (2001, 2005), Santos (2003), Agamben (2009), Lipovetsky (2005), Santos ( 2009), Zizek (1996) and McNeill (1995). The methodological approach combines literature review, field research through application of semi-structured interviews and analysis of examples that constitute the corpus of the research / A explosão blográfica se intensifica na década de 1990, e ganha enorme amplitude.

Peroni, Gabriel Prado 19 August 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:18:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Gabriel Prado Peroni.pdf: 2042508 bytes, checksum: 23092fdadc7c70e9ddb3be7ab40ef90c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-19 / The objective of this piece is to dissert on how the acceleration of online communication interferes positively or negatively on news production on the internet as well as on the results of this production. The intention was to demonstrate how, once exposed to the logistic of the speed, the online news could bend on two paths: the first one an efficient journalism which, even though made under the influence of the acceleration, presented a satisfactory result, agreeable to the immediacy expected from the online public. On the other hand, the online speed can deteriorate the good quality journalism concept, offering its public contents which will not be satisfying. Those are superficial and trivial news, when not simply forged. What will determine the benefic or malicious outcome of online journalism will be the criteria adopt by each communication vehicle and by its employees, the journalists themselves. The methodological and theoretical bases are works from thinkers from the new media and from others from the worldwide computer network as the international Pierre Lévy and, from Brazil, Eugênio Trivinho, as well as media critics like Paul Virilio and, from Brazil, Eugênio Bucci. Press and Journalism history were also considered. The subject of the research being a selection of 12 news from four Brazilian websites UOL, G1, Globo Online and Agência Estado, extracted inside the period from July 2007 to June 2009. The analysis should elucidate the follow premise: how the accelerating process adopted on communication vehicles acts on the origins of news productions which may or not offer quality to its public.

Learning by Gaming : Investigating the Influence of Playing Video Games on Vocabulary Level among Swedish ESL Learners

Hadin, Joacim January 2019 (has links)
The video game industry is one of the fastest growing markets in the world today. The fact that playing video games has become such a popular recreational activity among youths and adolescents has created a need for research investigating the effects of video game playing. Because of the role of the English language as a global lingua franca, most video games are released in English. Since most video games are released in English, many believe that the utilization of video games can help learners of English to improve their knowledge of how to utilize the English language. The aim of this study is to investigate whether video game playing does positively influence the English receptive vocabulary level of ESL learners. In addition, the present study also investigated the influence of other factors, such as the utilization of online communication tools, the average time spent playing video games, and the type of video games played, on English receptive vocabulary level. The study was conducted using quantitative research methods. Since the aim of the study was to investigate the relation between two separate aspects, the study had to utilize two separate elicitation methods for the data collection: one questionnaire (that was supposed to determine each informant’s video game habits) and one vocabulary test (that was supposed to get an approximation of each informant’s receptive vocabulary level). When the data had been collected, the tests were corrected, and the participants were categorized according to the previously mentioned variables. The mean scores of the categories were later examined and compared to each other. Differences between groups that were of high importance were further examined, with a t-test, to determine whether the difference was statistically significant or not. The results of the study show that the vocabulary level difference between ESL learners that do play video games and ESL learner that do not play video game is insignificant. The results further show that the utilization of online communication tools while playing video games positively influences vocabulary level, as the mean score difference on the vocabulary test between OCT users and OCT non-users was revealed to be significant by the t-test. The analysed data thus show that the influence of the utilization of online communication tools on English receptive vocabulary level are more significant that the influence of playing video games.
