In 1989, the sole psychiatric hospital in "Baixada Santista", underwent municipal intervention due to abuse and violence denunciations. In the following years, government, workers, users, relatives and community operated a great transformation in the assistance model, creating several open services in the territory which substituted the madhouse, which was then closed in 1995, and its patients could then be treated closer to their homes and family in an integrated way, that is, considering their moments of crisis and the rebuilding of their citizenship. The target of this work was to investigate which was the understanding the users had had of those two experiments. The contextualization was done considering the asylum as a place where psychiatry was born and consolidated, and the diseased reality should be then referred to its two sides: psychopatological and exclusion. The deinstitucionalization process occurred in Santos was described in its theoretical and practical aspects, and located in a major scenery, the Psychiatric Reform in Brazil. The methodology was based on the oral narration from seven egress patients from "Casa de Saúde.Anchieta", who attend one of the new services in the community, through which it was possible to identify the main events and values that marked their rehabilitation trajectories / Mestrado / Mestre em Saude Coletiva

Morita, Marisa Kimie 24 September 1993 (has links)
This research was developed to investigate the process of the oral language acquisition of Portuguese as a foreign language through dialogue at distance. The procedure proposed by us is a form of individualized classroom extension. Dialogues at distance are occasions on which teacher and student carry on a conversation through audio-taped recordings. It is the moment when the learners use the target language in real significant situations, practising listening comprehension and speaking. Parallel to the recordings, the teacher and the learners meet to exchange impressions and ideas about this processo 8ased on them, studies of some linguistic aspects (phonological, lexical, morphological, sintatic and pragmatic) are required. Data were evaluated from the formal-linguistic, thematic and interactional view showing the similarities and differences of aquisition of two subjects. Strategies of communications used by our subjects in this process were also studied to show the attempts they made to overcome the various communicativ'e problems faced in the dialogues. . The data showed us that the dialogues at distance proved to be a valid procedure with great potential to teaching/learning situations as well as to applied research in the language area / Mestrado / Ensino-Aprendizagem de Segunda Lingua e Lingua Estrangeira / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

The antimicrobial investigation of indigenous South African medicinal plants against oral pathogens

Akhalwaya, Saajida January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the degree of Master of Pharmacy, Johannesburg, 2017 / Oral diseases in South Africa remain a huge public health problem due to the high cost, prevalence, severity and the influence on the patients well-being. Treatment for oral diseases requires the need for specialist dental health care workers and come at a high cost causing a great burden on the health system. The three most important oral diseases are dental caries, caused by Streptoccocus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei, periodontal diseases caused by Porphrymonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum and oral candidiasis caused by Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida krusei. An ethnobotanical review has revealed that over a 120 South African medicinal plants are used for the treatment of oral diseases. This coupled with the lack of research on the subject, allowed for the investigation of the antimicrobial efficacy of some South African plants against oral pathogens. A total of 140 aqueous and organic extracts and six essential oils were prepared from 31 different plant species. These plant samples were screened for antimicrobial efficacy against nine oral pathogens using the micro-titre plate dilution assay. Plant extracts that were found to have noteworthy antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans were further evaluated on the effect on S. mutans biofilm formation using the glass slide method. The toxicity profiles of plant samples that were found to have noteworthy antimicrobial activity were evaluated using the brine shrimp lethality assay. The plants did not exhibit antimicrobial efficacy against all nine pathogens in this study, instead, most were very specific to disease conditions. Some plants did show good antimicrobial activity against four of the nine pathogens tested (A. afra leaves, C. torulosa stems, C, brachiata leaves and H. natalensis leaves). The organic extract of Cissampelos torulosa stems displayed the lowest MIC value of 0.05 mg/ml against both Lactobacillus spp. This antimicrobial activity was also observed with the organic extract of Spirostachys africana leaves against Candida albicans. In some instances, a direct relationship was found between the traditional use of the plant and the antimicrobial activity observed. For example, noteworthy activity (MIC < 1.00 m/ml) was observed against all three Candida spp. for Clematis brachiata (leaves), a plant traditionally used to treat oral thrush. Englerophytum vi magalismonatanum (stems) displayed notable activity against both Streptococcus spp. (MIC 0.83 mg/ml against S. mutans and MIC 0.67 mg/ml against S. sanguis). Spirostachys africana leaves displayed the greatest anti-adherent properties against S. mutans biofilm formation at both 24 and 48 h, reducing the biofilm by 97.56% and 86.58% respectively. The majority of plant samples tested in the brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA) were considered safe, however, 13 plant samples were considered toxic, at a concentration of 1 mg/ml, and their LC50 values were determined. The findings from the results favour the potential use of these plants in treating oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal diseases and oral thrush, and scientifically validates the traditional use of some of these plants. / XL2017

Dental implications of inherited connective tissue disorders in South Africa

Chetty, Manogari January 2016 (has links)
The prevalence of Osteogenesis imperfecta type III (OI III) as a category of the inherited connective tissue disorders in South Africa is of paramount importance. Although worldwide, autosomal recessive(AR) OI is rare, it had emerged that the frequency of OI III is relatively high in the indigenous Black African population of South Africa. A review of the literature revealed a paucity of information regarding the dental and craniofacial manifestations of the disorder in this ethnic group. For these reasons, the central theme of this thesis is the identification, documentation and analysis of these features in individuals with OI III in the Black African population of SA. Osteogenesis imperfecta type III (OMIM 259420) is a severe autosomal recessive disorder in which frequent fractures and progressive limb and spinal deformity result in profound physical disability. The condition is heterogeneous and dentin genesis imperfecta (DI) is an important syndromic component of some types of OI III. Other maxillofacial and dental manifestations also have significant implications in terms of management.

The road to Mamre : migration, memory and the meaning of community c1900-1992

Ward, Kerry January 1992 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references. / This thesis breaks new ground in oral history methodology in South African historiography. It applies an approach to research which evolved from participation in the Masters Students Programme of Community Education Resources at the University of Cape Town. The thesis investigates the process of historical research in Mamre, a mission village fifty kilometres north-west from Cape Town. CER's research methodology provided the basis of interaction between myself as an academic historian and members of the Mamre community interested in researching their own history. Through my participation as facilitator, sharing skills of oral history methodology and resource production, members of the Mamre History Project were able to research and present a new vision of Mamre's history to the community. This thesis documents the process of this interaction and interrogates the meaning of history in the Mamre community. It focuses on the experience of migration in the first half of the twentieth century based on oral testimony from life history interviews of Mamriers born in this era. It also probes how community identity in Mamre is forged over time, and transcends spatial boundaries. Mamriers' community identity incorporates both city and countryside because the common experience of migration to Cape Town began last century and the networks between the two milieux still persist. The study also raises issues of memory and nostalgia in the creation of both individual and collective identity. The aim of this thesis is to discover new ways of making history in the academy and in the community; and to break down barriers between the two audiences.

An empirical study of the effect of systematic relaxation training of chronically-anxious subjects on the communication variable of closed-mindedness

Barna, La Ray 01 May 1970 (has links)
This is a study of whether an attempt to reduce the trait of high tension-anxiety by means of systematic neuro-musculature relaxation training will result in a decrease of the communication variable of closed-mindedness. A general review of the literature showed that the problem of tension-anxiety is complex, pervasive, and detrimental to effective communication. First, an attempt is made to bring relevant information to the field of general speech by citing a few findings from the research of other disciplines concerning the nature and effects of tension-anxiety. Currently-used methods of anxiety reduction are mentioned, and one, neuro-musculature relaxation training, discussed as to its effectiveness and adaptability to the college environment. This method was chosen for investigation in the present study because it can be administered to groups by trained personnel, who need not be professional psychotherapists, at no risk to the students. The major hypothesis is that there will be a significant difference between the dogmatism scores of the experimental group who receive relaxation training and the dogmatism scores of the control group who did not receive such training. The minor hypothesis is that there will be a significantly greater difference between the pre- and post-anxiety scores of the experimental group than between the pre-and post-anxiety scores of the control group, and the post-scores will show a downward trend. The design of the study consisted first of selecting a group of high-anxious subjects by administering the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale to all students who enrolled in the beginning fundamental speech course, which totaled 427, and sending invitations to the fifty-six students who scored twenty-four and above to participate in the research study. Those who accepted were arbitrarily placed in either the control group or the experimental group depending on whether their time schedules permitted them to attend the previously-scheduled training meetings. The experimental group was given a series of six weekly training sessions of forty-five minutes each using a modified version of the Jacobson method of progressive neuro-musculature relaxation. There was no more contact with the control group until after the six-week period when both groups were administered the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale and a repeat of the Manifest Anxiety Scale. Statistical procedures were employed at this time, and since no significant differences were found both hypotheses were rejected. The findings of this study show that the method of systematic neuro-musculature relaxation training employed did not cause significant differences in either the dogmatism or the chronic tension-anxiety level of the experimental subjects according to the measuring devices used. That the method could be used with the equipment and conditions of a normal college environment and with trained non-professionals as therapists was evident. Whether it would be useful for the reduction of chronic high tension-anxiety remains in doubt due to the uncertain motivation of the experimental subjects and the questionable sensitivity of the Manifest Anxiety Scale as a measurement of tension-anxiety change. Further study using a combination of measuring devices, including the electromyograph, is recommended.
