Current Transport Mechanisms in Organic Light-Emitting Diode

Ou, Yi-fang 01 July 2005 (has links)
Organic light-emitting diode has several advantages using in the flat penal display, but it is still needed to improve the disadvantages. The charge-carriers of the organic layers are one of the dominant factors to influence the performance of OLED. Hence, it is worth to study and understand the charge transporting behaviors by the theoretical simulation in the organic layers of OLED, and that is helpful for the OLED in future. In this study, three kinds of models are used to simulate the characteristics of several different organic light-emitting devices, and it also try to compare the relationship between the current density and voltage. Three kinds of models are described as (1) The field-dependent carrier mobility model (FDM model), (2) An exponential distribution of traps model (EDT model), and (3) The field dependent trap occupancy model (FDTO model). For the simulation of three models, the characteristics of several hole-only devices and electron-only devices were analyzed to investigate and discuss the organic layer of the devices with different materials. In addition, by varying the parameters such as the thickness and temperature, a comparison was made between the results simulated from models with the values obtained from experimental works. Finally, based on above results, the characteristics of OLED could be improved for future applications.

Exciton Dynamics in White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes comprising Triplet Harvesting / Exzitonendynamik in weißen, auf Triplet Harvesting basierenden organischen Leuchtdioden

Hofmann, Simone 10 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This work comprises different approaches for the efficiency enhancement of white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In particular, diffusion and transfer processes of excited singlet and triplet states are investigated. Generation of white light is realized by using the so-called triplet harvesting method where the otherwise nonradiatively decaying triplets of a blue fluorescent emitter are transferred to a highly efficient phosphorescent emitter and result in additional emission at lower energies. Triplet harvesting significantly increases the internal quantum efficiency in OLEDs. First, the well-known blue emitter 4P-NPD is investigated as model case. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, triplet harvesting by a yellow and red phosphorescent emitter, respectively is directly proven. However, triplet harvesting by a green emitter is not possible due to the low triplet energy of 4P-NPD. Using quantum chemical calculations, two new emitter molecules, 8M-4P-NPD and 8M-4P-FPD, are synthesized with the aim to rise the triplet energy. Their properties and their ability to facilitate triplet harvesting by a green emitter are studied. For the first time, a white triplet harvesting OLED is demonstrated where triplet harvesting occurs directly from a blue emitter to a green and a red emitter. Furthermore, an additional singlet transfer is observed in the triplet harvesting OLEDs under investigation. Using the phosphorescent emitter as singlet sensor, this effect allows the determination of the singlet diffusion length in 4P-NPD. By varying the distance between singlet generation zone and singlet sensor, a singlet diffusion length of 4.6 nm is found. One further approach to increase the efficiency is the optimization of a tandem OLED which comprises two single OLED units stacked on top of each other. At a luminance of 1,000 cd/m², the white tandem OLED shows an external quantum efficiency of 25%, a luminous efficacy of 33 lm/W, a color rendering index (CRI) of 62, and Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.53/0.43). These efficiencies are comparable to state-of-the-art efficiencies of white OLEDs. Finally, the highly efficient white tandem structure is applied on an alternative electrode consisting of flattened silver nanowires. In comparison to the conventional OLED with indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode, this OLED shows similarly high efficiencies as well as a superior color stability in terms of viewing angles. The color stability can be assigned to the light scattering properties of the nanowires. The OLED with silver nanowire electrode shows efficiencies of 24% and 30 lm/W at 1,000 cd/m² with a CRI of 69 and CIE coordinates of (0.49/0.47).

Organic Opto-Electronic Devices for Data Storage and Solid-State Lighting

Lauters, Michael E January 2006 (has links)
Metal/organic/indium tin oxide (ITO) structures, including OLEDs, are demonstrated to contain multiple nonvolatile conductance states that can be programmed by the application of an external bias above a certain threshold voltage (Vth). These conductance states are stable and in turn can be probed by the use of a bias lower in value than Vth. The unbiased retention time of states is greater than several weeks, and more than 48,000 write-read-rewrite-read cycles have been performed with minimal degradation. It is found that the programming of a continuum of conductance states is possible, and techniques to do so are outlined. The electrical conductivity of the highest and lowest states can differ by six orders of magnitude. Switching speeds below 50 ns are shown, resulting in an energy requirement of about 100 pJ to switch from one conductance state to another. The memory phenomenon is shown to be influenced by the active layer thickness and anode/surface roughness while temperature dependence is limited. The electrical characteristics of these devices are consistent with metal diffusion or filament phenomena found in metal-insulator-metal structures, suggesting a possible mechanism by which the states are stored.Electroluminescent devices employing several new organic-inorganic lumophore-functionalized macromolecules are presented. In this study, macromolecules incorporating several lumophores covalently bonded to the vertices of a cubical core structure based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) in multiple configurations are implemented as light-emitting centers. The hole-transporting polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and electron-transporting additive 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) are used as a two-part host to enhance the carrier transport in these simple solution-processed single-layer devices. A study of energy transfer in several systems is carried out to understand the requirements needed to create white-light emission from a single macromolecule. A single macromolecule incorporating twenty-one blue and one yellow lumophore is shown to exhibit field-independent stable white-light electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.31, 0.37). An external quantum efficiency of 0.55 percent and a maximum brightness of 1600 cd/m2 are attained with simple solution-processed single-layer devices. High solubility and ease of purification give these macromolecule white-light emitters advantages over their small molecule and polymeric type counterparts.

Plasmonic Organic Electronic Devices

LIU, FENG 11 January 2012 (has links)
Surface plasmon is a collective oscillation behavior of electrons in metal nanoparticle induced by the excitation of incident light, which can create an enhanced localized electric field near the surface of metal nanoparticle. To date, metal nanoparticle surface plasmon resonances have been extensively studied in the photoluminescence domain; little work however was devoted to electroluminescent and photovoltaic research. In this thesis, as a fundamental study we firstly investigated surface plasmon enhanced europium complex luminescence and obtained an improved understanding of the importance of optical spacer in metal enhanced fluorescence phenomenon. Under this guideline, we incorporated metal NPs into organic light emitting diodes (OLED) and organic solar cells, by means of thermal evaporation and wet chemistry. Metal nanoparticles are demonstrated to enhance the efficiency of both OLEDs and solar cells only under tailored device architecture. The surface plasmon enhanced local electric field plays an important and comprehensive role in enhancing device performance. In Alq3 based OLED we observed increased charge carrier injection by depositing Ag nanoparticles underneath the Al cathode; in Ir(ppy)3 based OLED we gained enhanced luminous efficiency via doping silica functionalized Ag nanoparticles into emitting layer; in P3HT based organic polymer solar cell we noticed an increased polymer absorption by incorporating Ag nanoparticles over the active layer. On the other hand, adverse effects such as metal nanoparticle induced charge carrier recombination and light extinction are also observed. The study of surface plasmon effects in organic optoelectronic devices reveals interesting surface plasmon features and permits to optimize optoelectronic devices from a novel point of view. / Thesis (Ph.D, Chemistry) -- Queen's University, 2012-01-05 17:22:40.074

Organic and organometallic fluorenyl-pophyrins for optics / Fluorényl-porphyrines organiques et organométalliques pour l'optique

Zhang, Xu 17 March 2017 (has links)
During this thesis, we have elaborated new compounds using the porphyrin macrocycle as the basic platform of our architectures. The aim, after their syntheses, was to study the linear optical (LO) and non-linear optical (NLO) properties of these new molecules. More precisely, we have synthesized and characterized three groups of fluorenyl-porphyrin dendrimers, a series of ruthenium organometallic porphyrins, and started a series of new type of porphyrin. Their correlations on optical property-structure have been discussed, as well as the energy transfer processes from the donor fragments to porphyrin core acceptor. In the introduction, we presented the general background of the porphyrin chemistry based on four aspects: ( I) structure, (2) synthetic methods, (3) LO properties and (4) NLO properties. We further reviewed prior porphyrin studies done in our group and proposed new molecular designs based on these results. In the first chapter, we synthesized a group of thienyl porphyrin cored dendrimers. The thienyl units connect the conjugated fluorenyl dendrons to porphyrin ring by alkynyl bridges. The energy transfer (ET) of these porphyrins is very efficient and they present interesting NLO properties with enhanced Two-photon absorption (TPA). In the second chapter, we synthesized a series of ruthenium compounds based on Tetra-fluorenyl porphyrin core (TFP) for NLO applications. In the third chapter, we synthesized two new dendrons with two terminal fluorenyl antennae fi xed on the 9 position of the fluorenyl units in conjugated or non-conjugated way respecti vely. Then two new porphyrin dendrimers were obtained by Sonogashira coupling reaction of these dendrons on TFP porphyrin core. Their ET from dendrons to porphyrin core is very efficient. They present interesting LO properties and the TPA results are very promising. In the fourth chapter, we synthesized a group of TFP cored porphyrins with terminal fluorenone anns. These porphyrins emit red luminescence and the ET is very efficient from the linear arms toward their cores. As perspective, a new type of meso-alkynyl porphyrin series is considered, for the moment we synthesized only the generation 0 of the dendrimers: the four fluorenyl arms of this porphyrin are bridged to the centre ring by alkynyl chains, and the optical studies of this prototype are in progress.

Chang, Ming-sian 19 July 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, a novel blue Poly (arylene ether) s polymer was prepared for the organic polymer light emitting diodes which was composed of the main material anthracene difluoro monomer derivatives, and object material of triphenylamine with the extension structure similar to the literature seen BD-1 asymmetric derivatives, as the hole transport material of carbazole of the diol derivatives. In general, Anthracene derivatives and BD-1, often seen in the literature as the host, guest blue polymer doping, the main use to Forster energy transfer to transfer energy to the guest, so it has good luminous efficiency. Anthracene, flat Good, easy to crystallization during evaporation, resulting in leakage generated; and the deposition of the multilayer structure will hinder charge injection to the emitting layer. From the angle of the molecular design of this study. (1) Use of the CF bond and Carbazole increase the steric hindrance of the polymer chain and change by fluoride compounds of the highest occupied molecular orbital - lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level. (2) The hole transport layer to import into the emitting layer. The two monomers Anthracene derivatives fluoride monomer the Carbazole of diol derivatives via nucleophilic polycondensation synthesis of a novel in proper proportion, Blue polymer. Component parts, the Blue poly aromatic ether polymer doped with a small amount of blue light-emitting guest as a component layer of the component structure: ITO / PEDOT: PSS / emitting layer / LiF / Al light-emitting layer can make use of spin coating of solvent process, and its advantage is the convenience of the process and a large area. The undoped guest before the Blue polymer production the PLED starting voltage can be reduced to 4.5 V, and maximum brightness 7 466 cd/m2, efficiency as high as 4.2 cd / A. C.I.E. coordinates of (0.15,0.08), very close to the official regulations of the NTSC Blue coordinates (0.14,0.08). When doped with 3% of the guest, the starting voltage can be reduced to 4.5 V, maximum brightness of 12104 cd/m2 and efficiency as high as 5.79 cd/A.

Fabrication of aspherical micro-lens using modified LIGA process

Lee, Wan-chi 26 August 2009 (has links)
This study utilizes a modified LIGA process to fabricate a high aspect ratio aspherical micro lens array, which improves low light output of OLED due to its intrinsic total internal reflection. Presently typical OLED extraction efficiency is not high. How to increase OLED extraction efficiency is a valuable topic to discuss. This study analyzes related parameters that influence the formation of micro lenses, for example, the influence of variation of diametric dimension, dry etching parameters and electroforming rate. The experimental results indicate that the tolerance of dimensional variation of the diameter is about 5% during the thermal reflow and dry etching stage. The oxygen content and the photoresist surface during dry etching influence the result. A high electroforming rate is helpful for covering the surface defects on photoresist. An undercut caused by dry etching will discontinue the initial electroformed layers. A apherical microens array can raise the luminance to a maximum of 15 times higher.

Développement de dispositifs hybrides à base de nanocristaux colloïdaux pour l'émission et la photodétection dans le visible et l'infrarouge / Development of hybrid components based on colloidal quantum dots for emission and photodetection in the visible and infrared range

Bourvon, Hélène 28 September 2012 (has links)
This work is devoted to the development of Visible and Near-Infrared Light Emitting Diodes and photodetectors based on colloidal nanocrystals. First, we report a wet strategy for solution processed QDLEDs. Using spin coated and inkjet printed polymers, we have developed our first devices. Unfortunately, their efficiencies were quite low. To overcome these issues, we have developed an original QDs deposition method based on stamping and Langmuir processes, called Langmuir-Schaeffer Stamping (LSS). LSS is a very cost-efficient, dry, simple and homogeneous method to deposit nanocrystals on any substrate, even on small molecules deposited layers. Using LSS, we have developed efficient devices whose specifications are reported here. Direct injection and Förster mechanisms are studied. Furthermore we have fabricated infrared devices with PbS nanocrystals. Performances of our 109 Jones NIR photo-detectors and NIR-QDLEDs are presented in this thesis.
