The relationship between trainer locus of control and training style orientation

Kleyn, Esmé 04 1900 (has links)
Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Department of Industrial Psychology / Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the current South African context the Government places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of adult training and development as a solution for addressing many social and economic problems. It is therefore important to investigate all aspects regarding the training context in order to optimise learning. The trainer plays an integral part within this system. Although literature regards the trainer as very important for training success, very little substantial research has been documented with regards to the influential factors on the training style orientation that trainers use when training adults. In order to investigate this problem, a study of the relevant literature is done. The following topics are examined for this purpose: The training system and the components thereof, andragogy and pedagogy as training style orientations, several trait theories of personality as the basis of the study, locus of control as a personality trait, and the influence of personality and more specifically locus of control within work-related settings. Three questionnaires were administered on a sample of 100 respondents, i.e. a Demographic questionnaire, the Training Style Inventory and the Locus of Control Inventory in order to generate data to investigate the research problem and hypotheses. The Demographic Questionnaire collected data regarding gender, age, qualifications, training experience, ethnicity, subject area of the training content, and type of organisation. The Training Style Inventory measured the training style orientation of the trainer respondents, and the Locus of Control Inventory was used to measure the locus of control of respondents. The results indicate support for the hypothesis that there is a statistical significant correlation between locus of control and training style orientation. More specifically, there is a statistically significant correlation between internal locus of control and the andragogical training style orientation, and also between external locus of control and the pedagogical training style orientation. The main objectives of this study were successfully achieved and documented. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are made. It is recommended that future research replicate the study with a greater and random sample of respondents, within the South African context. Also, investigating the effectiveness of the trainers as a result of their locus of control and training style orientation is an interesting possibility for future research.

Numerical investigation of the interaction of synthetic jets with a laminar boundary layer and the effect of jet orientation

Valenzuela Calva, Fernando January 2016 (has links)
In 2009, based on its commitment to take action on the climate change, the aviation industry accorded a group of objectives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Although only 2% of all human-induced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are produced by the global aviation industry, the aviation industry is set to grow in the next 30 years. In order to maintain this growth without increasing its negative environmental impact, the future aircraft have to be cleaner and greener. In order to reduce carbon emissions and increase the operative efficiency, novel technologies have been developed and applied on aircraft. One of the recently introduced technologies is the flow control over the wing by employing active flow control methods. Amongst the active flow control methods, synthetic jets have emerged as a developing and promising technology. The latter have been extensively investigated since 1990 in laboratory based investigations. In spite of the fact that many experimental studies have been performed to design synthetic jet actuators for optimal flow control, due to the the vast number of operating parameters involved, and the lack of current measurement technologies, they can be impractical and highly expensive. Hence, there is a need for a systematic analysis to establish the optimal operating conditions with the highest effectiveness at the cost of minimum energy input, and the most suitable orientation of synthetic jet orifices. This would require enhanced comprehension of the inherent features of synthetic jets and their corresponding near wall effects. By using numerical simulations with a commercial CFD software (Star-CCM+), this thesis investigates some features associated with synthetic jet performance that are not fully understood, such as: • The optimal working configuration of a synthetic jet array embedded into a laminar detached boundary layer for flow separation control. • The effect of orifice orientation (inclined and skewed synthetic jets) over normal synthetic jets and their optimal working configuration in an attached laminar boundary layer.

Silva, Fernando Rodrigues January 2008 (has links)
This paper searches to study how the work is influenced by the sexuality on the cases of discrimination linked to sexual orientation in the Brazilian context. The focus is mainly the discussion about the implications in the production of subjectivity, as well as the creation of social and juridical instruments and affirmative actions that intend to guarantee liberty of sexual expression. In order to attain this objective, we used a genealogical approach to define the possibility conditions to the emergence of sexual orientation discrimination as a social question. The work is still the basis of construction social and defines the sexuality mainly as heterosexuality, using the familism to support it. Sexual discrimination in the work put in danger its victims because takes their life support off. However there is a creation of juridical and social instruments and actions that aim reaches a sexual expression with dignity.

Reconciling Disparate Identities: A Qualitative Study with women in the LDS Church Experiencing Same-sex Attractions

Anderton, Cindy L. 01 May 2010 (has links)
LGB individuals seek out counseling at higher rates than their straight counterparts and they tend to present for counseling with concerns that are unique and different from heterosexuals, such as difficulty reconciling one's sexual orientation with one's own religious beliefs. Yet counselors and counselors-in-training indicate that they have received very little education and/or training for working competently with LGB clients or with clients dealing with issues of religion and spirituality. The counseling profession could benefit from research providing in-depth and descriptive information as to the experiences of LGB participants who have same-sex attractions and come from a religious faith tradition that is not embracing of a non-heterosexual orientation identity in order for counselors to more fully understand the issues these LGB clients might present with. To begin addressing this need this dissertation was undertaken with the purpose of examining the experiences of women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who currently have or have had same-sex attractions. A phenomenological methodology was used in order to collect and analyze the data from two semi-structured interviews with 10 Caucasian women who: were born into and raised in the LDS religion; had resided in either Utah or Idaho during their formative years; and, had indicated that they had experienced a same-sex attraction. Results indicated that the women in this study struggled with: figuring out and identifying themselves as a non-heterosexual person, the LDS religion and religious culture, and coming out to others in their lives. In-depth descriptions are provided highlighting the commonalities and ways in which the women in this study experienced difficulty and conflict during their experience of having a same-sex attraction within the LDS religious culture. The results of this study have compelling implications for counselors working with this population as well as counselor educators in charge of the training and education of counseling students.
