This phenomenological study sought to identify the common attributes of meaningful learning experiences as found in an outdoor education program. The pragmatic educational philosophy of John Dewey provides the rationale for the essence of meaningful learning in our schools and this research identifies the attributes of educative reflective experiences that are also meaningful learning experiences. Thirteen students enrolled in the Wilderness Writing Program, offered during the fall semester of 2003 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, made up the focus group of this study. Their participation in four outdoor recreational activities and their reflections about their experiences became the basis of this research. Through written journal entries, focus group discussions, observations, and writing assignments, this study took a qualitative approach to identifying patterns of attributes that appeared to occur in meaningful learning experiences. This study found that meaningful learning experiences were identified by participants who experienced a period of awkwardness followed by a purifying process, or sublimation. A reflective period allowed for reconstruction of a person 19s view of himself or herself and this was closely tied with feedback from others in the group. The findings of this study can give educators specific components that appear to be crucial ingredients to meaningful learning experiences.

Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilken uppfattning lärare i idrott och hälsa har om friluftsliv samt vilken friluftlivsundervisning som bedrivs i några utvalda gymnasieskolor i Nacka kommun. Vilken uppfattning om friluftsliv har gymnasielärare i idrott och hälsa i Nacka kommun? Vilken friluftsundervisning bedriver de? Vad begränsar och möjliggör friluftsundervisningen i Nacka kommun? Metod I studien användes en kvalitativ intervjumetod, fem gymnasielärare som undervisar i idrott och hälsa i Nacka kommun intervjuades. Resultat Lärarnas uppfattning om friluftsliv varierar och definieras med följande ord; avkoppling, njutning, säkerhet, vistelse/aktiviteter/rörelse i naturen, frisk luft, naturmiljöer, utemiljöer, skog och natur med betoning på fri. Orientering är något som många lärare använder sig av när de beskriver vilket undervisningsinnehåll de bedriver i friluftsliv. Enligt lärarna är friluftlivsundervisningen begränsad och tid är den faktor som påverkar friluftsundervisningen mest. Slutsats I lärarnas undervisning finns det fler likheter än skillnader, trots olika uppfattning av friluftsliv. Alla skolor har goda förutsättningar för friluftsliv, med flera närliggande naturreservat och goda kommunikationer till platserna. Dock visar vår studie att goda förutsättningar inte är avgörande när det kommer till undervisning i friluftsliv på dessa platser. De begränsande ramfaktorerna är starkare än möjligheterna. Alla lärare är positiva till friluftsliv men tiden att genomföra friluftsliv ryms inte inom ramen för en vanlig lektion i idrott och hälsa. / Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate what opinion a teacher of physical education and health in Nacka Municipality has around outdoor activities as well as the outdoor teaching provided in Nacka municipality’s secondary schools. 1. What is the perception of outdoor living has been a teacher of physical education and health in Nacka? 2. What outdoor teaching conducts them? 3. What limits and allows outdoor teaching in Nacka? Method The study used a qualitative interview method, five secondary school teachers who teach physical education and health in Nacka interviewed. Results Teachers' perception of outdoor activities varies and are defined with the following words; relaxation, enjoyment, safety, stay / activities / motion of nature, fresh air, natural environments and outdoor environments, woods and nature with an emphasis on freedom. Orienteering is an activity that many teachers use as activity when they describing any educational content they carry out. According to the teachers, outdoor education is limited and time is the frame factor theory affecting outdoor teaching. Even administrative issues have an impact. Conclusions There are more similarities than differences what it comes to the teacher's teaching, despite different views of outdoor activities. All schools have good opportunities for outdoor activities, with several nearby wildlife preserve and good transport links to the sites. However, the study shows that these favorable conditions may not always be decisive when it comes to the teaching of outdoor activities. The limiting frame factor theory is stronger than the possibilities. All teachers are positive for outdoor activities but the time to carry out outdoor activities does not fit within the frame of a regular lesson in physical education.
