The organizational operations and impact of the PAN Africanist Congress on the struggle for liberation in South Africa, 1959 -1990

Gumede, Sphamandla Siyabonga, Shamase, Z., De Villiers, J., Ochonu, M.E. January 2017 (has links)
dissertation submitted to the Department of History in fulfilment of the requirements of Master of Arts Degree in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand, 2017. / This research study addresses the organisational operations and the impact of the Pan Africanist Congress of South Africa (later- of Azania) in the liberation struggle from its inception to 1990. Having been formed in 1959 by a coterie of renegade African National Congress (ANC) members, the PAC masqueraded as the Africanist movement. ‘Africanist’ is a 19th century ideology that says that black people should determine their own future - Africa for the Africans. The ideology of the PAC embodied external Africanist influences as well as South African experiences. This was clearly illustrated in the basic documents of the organisation, e.g. the Pan Africanist Manifesto, PAC Disciplinary Code, the Constitution, Oath of Allegiance and most importantly, Sobukwe’s inaugural address. These documents show how the Africanists conceived of the South African struggle as part of the broader struggle of the peoples of Africa against colonialism, imperialism and white domination. The PAC was barely a year old when it was banned in 1960 with its leaders restricted and scattered before they could clearly formulate a coherent approach on many pressing issues like African socialism, dialectical materialism, co-operation with other population groups and their attitude towards the South African Communist Party (SACP) and its members. It is generally believed that through 40 years of exile, self-marginalisation, political somersaults and internal leadership wrangles, the one point of consistency has been the PAC's attempt to define itself in opposition to the ANC. A plethora of scholars have over the years extensively and painstakingly researched the role of the PAC in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. However, a survey of the available literature on the PAC reveals a lack of in-depth academic analysis of its organizational modus operandi and impact thereof. As such, the research is geared towards studying the dynamics of the PAC’s policies and mode of operations to fill the lacuna that exists in the literature.

A Distributed System of Pan/tilt Cameras for 3D Tracking

Woo, David C. 07 1900 (has links)
This thesis describes a distributed system of cameras for visually tracking feature points in 3D. The concept of a network of cameras is introduced. Two or more calibrated cameras from a network of cameras are used to triangulate the location of a point in 3D based on camera positions and pan/tilt angles. A survey of methods for interior and exterior calibration is provided and a method suitable for multiple cameras in arbitrary positions has been implemented. A low-cost camera unit has been designed using off-the-shelf components that include a small CCD board camera and two servo-controlled mechanisms for pan and tilt. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of a network of cameras. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

World apart and years away : operacion Pedro Pan and the Cuban children's program

Hyatt, Robert C. 01 January 2010 (has links)
Between December 1960 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, 14,048 Cuban children were sent by their families out of the country to the United States through a program known as Operacion Pedro Pan. The children's memories of their homeland, their adopted country, and the program itself were formed by such factors as their age at the time of their expatriation, the length time that they spent apart from their families, and the communities that they were exposed to in the United States. While several novels and scholarly works have been written about Operation Pedro Pan, many authors have debated its purpose- whether or not the Central Intelligence Agency was trying to destabilize Fidel Castro's government- and its effectiveness because, having been a part of the exodus, their experiences influence how they report the stories of others. This paper analyzes newspaper articles, surveys, interviews, and literature written by Pedro Pans such as Carlos Eire's Waiting/or Snow in Havana, to determine how the widely accepted narrative of the United States saving Cuban children from "communist indoctrination" was formed in the United States and how this compares to the experiences of the Pedro Pan Children.

Cycle de l'uranium et évolution tectono-métamorphique de la ceinture orogénique Pan-Africaine du Lufilien (Zambie) / Uranium cycle and tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Pan-African orogenic belt (Zambia)

Eglinger, Aurélien 13 December 2013 (has links)
Quelques remobilisations tardives de l'U sont observées lors de l'exhumation des roches métamorphiques / Uranium is an incompatible and lithophile element and can be used as a geochemical tracer to discuss the generation and the evolution of continental crust. This thesis, focused on the Pan-African Lufilian belt in Zambia, characterizes the U cycle for this crustal segment. Silici-clastic and evaporitic sediments have been deposited within an intracontinental rift during the dislocation of the Rodinia supercontinent during the early Neoproterozoic. U-Pb ages on detrital zircon grains in these units indicate a dominant Paleoproterozoic provenance. The same zircon grains show subchondritic epsilonHf (between 0 and -15) and yield Hf model ages between ~2.9 and 2.5 Ga. These data suggest that the continental crust was generated before the end of the Archean associated with U extraction from the mantle. This old crust has been reworked by deformation and metamorphism during the Proterozoic. U has been remobilized and re-concentrated during several orogenic cycles until the Pan-African orogeny. During this Pan-African cycle, U-Pb and REY (REE and Yttrium) signatures of uranium oxides indicate a first mineralizing event at ca. 650 Ma during the continental rifting. This event is related to late diagenesis hydrothermal processes at the basement/cover interface with the circulation of basinal brines linked to evaporites of the Roan. The second stage, dated at 530 Ma, is connected to metamorphic highly saline fluid circulations, synchronous to the metamorphic peak of the Lufilian orogeny. These fluids are derived from the Roan evaporite dissolution. Some late uranium remobilizations are described during exhumation of metamorphic rocks and their tectonic accretion in the internal zone of the Lufilian orogenic belt

White, Vera Lucia 22 September 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines and analyses printed editions of Peter Pan published in Brazil, in Brazilian Portuguese, from 1930 to date. It is proposed that there is a norm when translating Peter Pan between 1953 and 2011, which is to use cartoon feature film version by Walt Disney as a parameter, particularly with regard to the purification of the text and illustrations. Some works will receive greater prominence due to its referential and historical importance, especially the original work by J. M. Barrie, the film version by Walt Disney, the adaptation by Monteiro Lobato and the translation by Ana Maria Machado.
