A thermo-mechanical finite element model is developed to determine the temperature history and residual stresses in a Cu-H13 thin-walled plate deposited by the Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENSTM) process. The same model is also applied to a H13-H13 sample to compare the results. The input laser power is adjusted to maintain a steady molten pool size and depth. For a constant scanning speed the laser power decreases with the addition of more layers, and with the increase of scanning speed the laser power needs to be increased. The Z-component of residual stresses is greater than the other components, and is compressive near the center of the wall and tensile at the free edges. The residual stress levels near the free edges are higher in the H13-H13 sample than in the Cu-H13 sample. In these regions, the use of unidirectional scanning results in a higher stress accumulation than the alternating scanning.

Fault diagnosis and prediction in reciprocating air compressors by quantifying operating parametersFeng, Ming-Fa 12 October 2005 (has links)
This research introduces a new method of diagnosing the internal condition of a reciprocating air compressor. Using only measured load torques and shaft dynamics, pressures, temperatures, flow rates, leakages, and heat transfer conditions are quantified to within 5%.
The load torque acting on the rotor of the machine is shown to be a function of the dynamics (instantaneous position, velocity, and acceleration) of the driving shaft, the kinematic construction, and the internal condition of the machine. If the load torque, the kinematic construction of the machine, and the dynamics of the rotor are known, then the condition of the machine can be assessed.
A theoretical model is developed to describe the physical behavior of the slider-crank mechanism and the shaft system. Solution techniques, which are based on the machine construction, crankshaft dynamics, and load torque measurements, are presented to determine the machine parameters. A personal computer based system used to measure the quantities necessary to solve for the machine parameters and the quantities used to compare with calculations is also documented.
The solution algorithm for multi-stage compressors is verified by decoupling the load torque contributed by each cylinder. Pressure data for a four-stage two-cylinder high pressure air compressor (HPAC) is used. Also, the mathematical model is proven feasible by using measured angular velocity of the crankshaft and direct measurements of the load torque of a single stage, single cylinder air compressor to solve for the machine parameters.
With this unintrusive and nondestructive method of quantifying the operating parameters, the cylinder pressures, operating temperatures, heat transfer conditions, leakage, and power consumption of a reciprocating air compressor can be evaluated. / Ph. D.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze possible strategies that can be used to improve the efficiency of the spare parts safety stock management in a multinational company which operates in the electronic industry. Research question: “Which safety stock dimensioning strategies are most suitable in an after-sales business environment, characterized by high level customer service and unpredictable demand?” Method: The theoretical framework illuminated the study’s phenomenon which was mainly based on peer-reviewed scientific articles but also academic books. Furthermore, the empirical data collection in this study was conducted through a mixed research approach, where the qualitative data was collected through three semi-structured interviews and several unstructured interviews, while the quantitative data consisted of calculations using numerical variables provided by the case company. Conclusion: The study concluded that the so called estimated safety stock method as well as the probabilistic demand based on history method are the most suitable safety stock dimensioning strategies to utilize in business environments where firms that offer products with unpredictable demand are facing challenges related to finding a balance between providing a high service level and keeping their costs as low as possible. / Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att analysera möjliga strategier som kan användas för att förbättra säkerhetslagerhanteringen av reservdelar hos ett globalt företag inom elektronikindustrin. Frågeställning: “Vilka dimensioneringsstrategier för säkerhetslager är mest lämpliga i en eftermarknadsverksamhet, kännetecknad av hög servicenivå och oförutsägbar efterfrågan?” Metod: Det teoretiska ramverket belyste studiens fenomen som var baserad på främst expertgranskade vetenskapliga artiklar men även böcker. Vidare genomfördes den empiriska datainsamlingen i denna studie genom en mixad forskningsmetod, där den kvalitativa datan var i form av fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer samt flera ostrukturerade intervjuer, medan den kvantitativa datan bestod av beräkningar med hjälp av numeriska variabler tillhandahållna av fallföretaget. Slutsats: Studiens slutsatser visade att den så kallade manuellt bedömt säkerhetslager metoden samt probabilistisk efterfrågan baserad på historisk data metoden är de mest lämpliga dimensioneringsstrategier för säkerhetslager att använda i affärsmiljöer där företag som erbjuder produkter med oförutsägbar efterfrågan står inför utmaningar relaterade till att hitta en balans mellan att tillhandahålla en hög servicenivå och att ha så låga kostnader som möjligt.

Improved remaining useful life estimations for on-condition parts in aircraft enginesFornlöf, Veronica January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on obtaining better estimates of remaining life for on-condition (OC) parts in aircraft engines. Aircraft engine components are commonly classified into three categories, life-limited parts (LLP), OC-parts and consumables. Engine maintenance typi-cally accounts for 10% to 20% of aircraft-related operating cost. Current methods to esti-mate remaining life for OC parts have been found insufficient and this thesis aims to devel-op a method that obtains better life estimates of OC part. Improved life estimates are es-sential to facilitate more reliable maintenance plans and lower maintenance costs. In the thesis, OC parts that need a better life estimates are identified and suitable prognosis methodologies for estimating the remaining life are presented. Three papers are appended to the thesis. The first paper lays out the main principles of air-craft engine maintenance and identifies the potential for improving maintenance planning by improving the remaining life estimation for the OC parts. The paper concludes that re-search is needed to find better estimates so that the right amount of maintenance is per-formed at each maintenance occasion. The second paper describes the aircraft and its engine from a system of system perspective. The aim of the paper is to show that no system is stronger than its weakest part and that there is a potential to increase the availability and readiness of the complete system, the aircraft engine, by introducing better life estimates for OC parts. Furthermore, a review of all engine parts, no matter if they are life-limited or on-condition, which needs to be incor-porated in a replacement model for maintenance optimization, is given. The paper con-cludes that the reliability of the complete aircraft engine would be increased if better life estimates are presented also for the OC parts. The third paper includes an evolved analysis of the subject and the analysis moves deeper in to a subsystem/module of the engine, the low pressure turbine. The specific subsys-tem/module is further analyzed to show the potential of increased reliability for the subsys-tem/module and the complete system, the aircraft engine, if better life estimates for the OC parts are obtained. Methods on how to estimate remaining life is discussed in this paper. It is stated that life estimates can be based on visual inspections, available testing methods (e.g. non destructive testing ) or new techniques that may be need to be developed based on remaining useful life estimations. To estimate the remaining life for the OC parts well es-tablished prognostic techniques such as physic-based, data-driven, symbolic, hybrid, or context awareness approaches that combine contextual/situation information awareness will be considered.

The economic impact of repealing the seven percent aircraft maintenance labor and parts tax in MississippiTu, Wen 11 August 2007 (has links)
Many aircraft owners in the general aviation industry do not possess maintenance and facility technicians of their own. They shop around to get the lowest possible price to maintain their aircraft. Mississippi has taxes on both labor and parts for aircraft maintenance at the rate of seven percent. The state government repealed these taxes in 2006, a question posted by local decision makers might be: what the economy would likely be after tax repeal? In response to this question, the study first developed an econometric model to estimate aircraft ownership. Then, the Impact Analysis for Planning model (IMPLAN model) was used to estimate the effect of repealing the aircraft maintenance labor and parts tax in Mississippi. The results showed the state output, employment, and labor income would increase substantially if the labor and parts taxes were repealed.
