Seismic Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Frame Buildings with Tension Only Braces

Khosravi, Sadegh 13 October 2021 (has links)
Reinforced concrete buildings built prior to the enactment of modern seismic codes are often seismically deficient. These buildings may have inadequate strength and ductility to withstand strong earthquakes. Conventional retrofit techniques for such frame buildings involve adding reinforced concrete shear walls or structural bracing systems to the existing bays. These techniques can be intrusive and result in lengthy down times and expensive structural interventions. An alternative to conventional techniques is the use of high-strength prestressing strands or cables, diagonally placed as tension elements. This technique was researched and used in a limited manner after the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake. It has since been further investigated at the University of Ottawa through experimental and analytical research (Shalouf and Saatcioglu (2006), Carrière (2008), Molaei (2014)). While the use of steel strands as tension bracing elements proves to be an effective technique, the resulting stiffening effects on the frames lead to increased seismic force demands and higher based shear, as well as increased axial forces on the attached columns, potentially generating net tension, foundation uplift and excessive compression. Relatively low elongation characteristics of high-strength cables and slack caused by yielding strands and associated pinching of hysteresis curves reduce potential energy dissipation capacity. The current research aims to improve the previously observed deficiencies of the system. One of the improvements involve the use of shape memory alloys (SMA) in the middle of the cables, which reduce/eliminate residual deformations upon yielding and associated pinching of the hysteresis curves. SMA allows energy dissipation in the system while forcing the structure to recover from its inelastic deformations because of the flag-shape hysteretic characteristics of the material. The feasibility of the cable-SMA assembly as tension brace elements is illustrated through dynamic analyses of selected prototype buildings. The other improvement is the development of progressively engaging, initially loose multiple strands as tension cables. These cables are placed loosely to engage in seismic resistance at pre-determined drift levels, thereby eliminating premature increase in seismic force demands until their participation is required as the frame capacity is reached. Tests of a large-scale reinforced concrete frame, designed following the requirements of the 1965 National Building Code of Canada NRC (1965) as representative of existing older frame buildings in Canada, are conducted under simulated seismic loading to assess the effectiveness of the proposed system. The verification of the concept is extended analytically to prototype buildings and the effectiveness of the system is demonstrated for mid-rise and low-rise frame buildings.

With this aim in mind, a study was initially conducted on the related laws in order to guide this research. In addition to understanding the laws, several readings were effected to revise the existing literature that served as basis to discuss the theme. Owing to some laws, plans, resolutions and other documents, the history of early childhood education was studied, together with rights and legal grounds of the professionals who operate in this segment, as regards to their continuous formation to develop the study about the program whose objective is the education of active teachers by developing a special teachers background program addressed to teachers teaching from the first to the fourth grades of the Elementary School and Early Childhood. The principle adopted in this study is that a continuous education is a need, however, it is understood beforehand that having a good background so that professionals are able to develop the required elements to operate in an engaged and competent fashion is time-consuming. In this regard, emphasis is paced on the understanding of the historic process and on the early childhood teachers professional background. Which process started with a brief account of the life of the author of this study. Then, some historical aspects of early childhood education were examined, covering some topics considered extremely important for the understanding and the study of the subject. The study proceeded with the examination of the Laws of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (Law 4024/61, 5692/71, 9394/96), not to mention the 1988 Federal Constitution and the Early Childhood National Curricula Reference with the purpose of showing of provision of early childhood education. The treatment given to the teacher operating in this educational level was identified in the same legal system, starting from the helf of some theorists who approach the matter, specially regarding the professional background of teachers working with early childhood students. Subsequently, PEC - University Education in Municipalities ´ Program was presented, as developed in the years 2003 and 2004 in the municipalities of São Paulo, leading to the Final Consideration of the discussion of this Program considered in light of the growing requirements imposed by the new times vis-àvis the question of continuous education, coupled with the neoliberal questions specific of a developing country such as Brazil´s. It is worth mentioning that this study did not intend to cover the totality of these questions, but only to pinpoint them as as interrelated. Therefore, it is expected that this research may serve as a guide to other researches dealing with early childhood education and that instead of becoming one more work on the academic shelve it may leaden the area to new discussions and new debates in arising some people´s consciousness and bringing about new insights towards a more critical, social, political and educational reality / A presente dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo inicial discutir questões relacionadas à formação profissional de professores da educação infantil no sentido de compreender como se deu a implementação do programa PEC Formação Universitária Municípios no estado de São Paulo.

This study 's purpose is the daily lived by students from African countries linked to the Student - Graduate Program Agreement , the PEC- G, conducting academic experience in a national HEI . The problem was oriented with a focus on the influence that the environment has instituted in everyday relationships established by students from African countries. The locus of the research was the Federal University of Pará - UFPA , in the House of Brazil - Africa Studies CBA . The objectives of the study were : a) raise the socioeconomic profile , academic and cultural development of students of African countries enrolled in the institution; b ) describe the interactions established by students of African countries within the HEI ; c ) verify that conditions are established relations between them and the environmental group established responsible to advise / assist in their academic experience. The methodology followed the qualitative approach and the theoretical framework focused on Everyday Theory of Agnes Heller (2008 ) , and contemporary studies on race relations and Higher Education. Coupled to these concepts , discourse analysis Bakhtin proposed by Brait (1997 ) ; Barros and Fiorin (1994); Bezerra (2008) Faraco (1996 ) was used involving three steps . The first involved the analysis of official and institutional documents in order to meet the speeches that materialize the guidelines about the daily life lived in public spaces for people with different aesthetic, cultural , social, etc. The Second refers to the on-site observation and journaling of everyday field experienced by the partners of this study . The third refers to the analysis of oral documents , made up of speeches by students from African countries about the daily academic . The results show that the daily lives of students of African countries is influenced by tensions and conflicts experienced in the set environment which in turn contributes to the distance to the institution that should assist in their academic experience at IES.
