Meeting the Needs of the Marginally Learning Disabled Intermediate Grade Child

Lobach, Gail Geiger 01 January 1985 (has links)
This study focused on the needs of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who have I.Q. scores of roughly 75-95. These students often function two or more years below grade level in school and are referred to as Marginally Learning Disabled (MLD), or slow learners. Factors which contribute to the existence of this situation were discussed as were problems of accurate identification. It was found that most school districts do not provide special help for these students. MLD students are usually placed in the regular classroom. A few school districts have experimented with special resource classes or self-contained classes. Parental involvement was found to be a major factor in the academic progress of the slow learner. Teacher effectiveness is also extremely important. An effective teacher was found to, (a) believe the child could learn, (b) be organized and run a structured program, and (c) provide direct, group instruction rather than individualized lessons.

The actions of the superior education professor is decisive in the aiming of academic disciplines. This action is constructed and encompassed in the elements that influence it. The main concern of this study was to question the professor action while decisive for the attribution of identity to Adapted Physical Education disciplines, its aiming, as well as the aspects that can contribute for the construction of this action. To elucidate such concern it was objectified to identify who is this professor of superior education in the disciplines of Adapted Physical Education (APE) at institutions of superior education in the Mato Grosso do Sul state, his educational background and performance, as well as its representation about APE, correlating these data with the legal orientations and the literature of this area. Having as starting point this conception, the qualitative research with interpretation and documentary scope was understood through the revision of literature, and if it would be capable to reach a "social objectivity" that involves the reality of this construction that is the professor action in the relation with the Adapted Physical Education disciplines. In such way, seven institutions of Superior Education had been selected (one public and six private ones) that offer undergraduation courses and/or teaching education courses in Physical Education in the Mato Grosso do Sul state. The collection of data was carried out through questionnaires with the seven professors of Adapted Physical Education disciplines, and digests and programs of this area literature. This made possible to identify the proposals of the professors for Adapted Physical Education, by means of ¿ mapping¿ the initial formation of this area of study in the Mato Grosso do Sul state. Through the developed analyses can be shown that: the aspects that have influence on the action of the professor are formed by the historical, social and political contexts; the Adapted Physical Education discipline is a product of the way it is constructed along the years of attendance for persons in deficiency conditions; the development of the forms of attendance for persons in deficiency condition brought changes in the superior education. The inclusion empowers the necessities of the superior education reorganization; the International orientation with relation to the attendance of the PWD (person with deficiency) influence strongly the Brazilian law ; Each professor is an unique being and so his singularity reflects in the form he acts in adapted physical education disciplines. On this track, the action of the professor who attributes identity and aiming to Adapted Physical Education disciplines, and this action reflects how the experience is articulated (legal orientation, literature, digests and programs of the disciplines), and how the individual interprets this human being subjective experience, and what meaning is attributed to it / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Mestre em Educação Física

Costa, Camila Rodrigues. January 2017 (has links)
This qualitative descriptive study was based on the underlying assumptions of collaborative research. Two Physical Education teachers and two Specialized Educational Assistants of the municipal elementary schools in the Central-West of the state of São Paulo participated in the study. A survey of national and international literature helped identify the theoretical principles that encompass a proposal for collaborative work. A questionnaire was used with the teachers who worked in the Specialized Educational Assistance, to identify whether the principles of the collaborative work outlined in the literature are applicable in practice. Data collection occurred in two different environments. Physical Education classes were filmed, focusing on the actions of the Physical Education teacher with the student, in order to identify the principles that make up the collaborative work. The collection also occurred in the meetings for planning with the teacher of the Specialized Educational Assistance and Physical Education, where the audios were recorded, with the objective of identifying in the teachers' speech the principles that make up the collaborative work and at the end of the work carried out A semi-structured interview, based on a script, with six open questions, related to the teachers' experience in working collaboratively. For the treatment and analysis of the information, the categories identified in the bibliographic survey were separated and regrouped by similarities, and later classified in three broad categories. These categories were used to identify, in the ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The Developmentally Disabled Elderly in Canada: Access to Health Care and Social Services

Easterling, Calvin Henry 08 1900 (has links)
The accessibility, predictors, and use of health care and social services among developmentally disabled elderly adults in Canada were examined using a nationally representative social survey. The first research hypothesis is that the independent variables will contribute significantly to the prediction of the dependent variables. A second hypothesis is that the slope of any given independent variable will not equal zero. The results of this research show that the illness (need) variables are the most predictive correlate of the utilization of health care and social services. The predisposing variables have secondary explanatory power, with the enabling variables accounting for the least amount of variance. The hypotheses were tested by step-wise multiple regression analysis using SPSS-X.

Human-Machine Interface Using Facial Gesture Recognition

Toure, Zikra 12 1900 (has links)
This Master thesis proposes a human-computer interface for individual with limited hand movements that incorporate the use of facial gesture as a means of communication. The system recognizes faces and extracts facial gestures to map them into Morse code that would be translated in English in real time. The system is implemented on a MACBOOK computer using Python software, OpenCV library, and Dlib library. The system is tested by 6 students. Five of the testers were not familiar with Morse code. They performed the experiments in an average of 90 seconds. One of the tester was familiar with Morse code and performed the experiment in 53 seconds. It is concluded that errors occurred due to variations in features of the testers, lighting conditions, and unfamiliarity with the system. Implementing an auto correction and auto prediction system will decrease typing time considerably and make the system more robust.
