The value of vocational education and training in advancing human development and reducing inequalities : the case of Palestine

Hilal, Randa January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims at examining the contribution of Vocational Education and Training (VET) to advancing Human Development (HD) and reducing inequality, using the example of Palestine as case-study rich in multi-layered inequalities, some of which are experienced in the region and worldwide, while others are specific to adverse conditions. The case of Palestine provides fertile ground for understanding inequality and human development, and for echoing the developed knowledge through to the understanding of VET and HD globally. The thesis contributes to the previous work on VET and HD introduced by McGrath (2012c) and shaped by many scholars, including McGrath and Powell, through the Capability Approach (CA). It uses Powell’s (2014) work on “aspiration” and capability lists (CL) and relates VET to human development within the Palestinian context. The thesis provides empirical evidence of the VET Learners’ and graduates’ capabilities and functions achievements through VET in the adverse conditions present in the Palestinian context. The thesis validates and develops the VET CL, integrating inequality elements and linking it to political economy theory. The thesis utilises Gender and Development Theory (GAD), complemented by the intersectionality approach. The research borrows Kabeer’s (1999) “empowerment framework”, based on the notion of “choice” in addressing disempowerment, to analyse how VET can contribute to reducing inequality. The thesis also engages with Political Economy arguments and specifically the work of Phillip Brown, Andy Green and Hugh Lauder (2001) on the need for “social transformation” to achieve the aim of a high skill society, suggesting an increased role for government and social partners and the political will for skills upgrading. In this regard, the thesis analyses how adopted policies are used to reduce or reproduce inequalities. The research used quantitative and qualitative methods, and engaged 1,240 people representing VET graduates, students, teachers, counsellors and management of VET institutes, in addition to policymakers on national and regional levels, as well as teachers and principals of general schools, employers, community representatives and government officials. 33 VET institutions were engaged representing the different VET providers being; governmental, non-governmental, semi-governmental and UN bodies. Selected institutes and consulted people presented different identified inequality elements. The Thesis presented empirical evidence on the increased value of VET for the marginalised, and for marginalised communities in adverse conditions. It presented that VET graduates’ achievements in employment, self-employment and different kind of work as well as in their speed in transiting to the World of Work (WOW) in comparison to their peers. Also presented their ability to generate income and other economic resources for poverty reduction and starting new families. In addition, it highlighted the empowerment achievements of the graduates and its link to achieving their aspirations. Confirming the transformation of the graduates through empowering the dis-empowered. Nevertheless, graduates were faced with internal and external structural challenges. Internal in social attitudes and institutional policies and measures, while the external is in the military occupation and its effects on mobility and socio-economic status. The structural challenges have clearly affected graduates functionings, and achievements of empowerment and aspirations. The thesis presented models of institutes and best-practices by others to support VET learners in overcoming some of the internal challenges, and highlighted the deficits in national policies and measures, it also highlighted a major international deficit. In addition, the thesis has presented the VET contribution to marginalised community resilience. The thesis presented methods of measuring empowerment, functionings and achievement of aspirations as voiced out from VET graduates and learners and triangulated with other resources. One of the main contributions of the thesis is in bringing in GAD to CA in HD approach to VET, and in linking them to political economy, providing a holistic framework to examine VET contribution to HD and reducing inequality. The thesis was able to link arguments about VET and inequality in an international context, and provided empirical evidence for the significance of the link between VET and empowerment in the reduction of inequality, thus indicating the importance of VET in the debate on inequality, and the importance of empowerment measures and goals for identifying the role of VET in reducing inequality and advancing human development.

Martins, Clitia Helena Backx January 2003 (has links)
This research focuses on the economic, socio-environmental and political dynamics related to organization, construction of collective identity and empowerment of workers in recycling cooperatives, taking into account their relationships with several external agents. The choice of this object relies on two main aspects: - the characterization of this activity as an occupation being structured and recognized, representing a possibility of sustainability and autonomy for sectors of low income people in developing countries; - a peculiar kind of State-civil society relation, in which recycling cooperatives interact simultaneously with local and regional public entities, and non-governmental organizations, like catholic institutions or other NGOs. Through a comparative analysis of characteristics of three recycling cooperatives in Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region, distinct results were found, concerning internal processes of work organization and decision-making participation, as well as the perceptions, motivations and expectations of the recycling workers towards their occupation.

Critical Care Registered Nurses’ Perceptions of Nurse-to-Nurse Incivility and Professional Comportment

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This cross-sectional descriptive study was designed to examine critical care registered nurses’ perceptions of nurse-to-nurse incivility and professional comportment, and the extent to which education, nurses’ age, nursing degree, and years of nursing experience is related to their perceptions on these topics. Professional comportment is comprised of nurses’ mutual respect, harmony in beliefs and actions, commitment, and collaboration. Yet, it was unknown whether a relationship existed between a civil or uncivil environment in the nursing profession and nurses’ professional comportment. Correlational analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between perceptions of nurse-nurse incivility and professional comportment, and the relationships between incivility and professional comportment education and perceptions of nurse-nurse incivility and professional comportment. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors of perceptions of nurse-nurse incivility and professional comportment. Results indicated statistically significant relationships between perceptions of nurse-nurse incivility and professional comportment, and between professional comportment education and perceptions of professional comportment. Professional comportment education was identified as a statistically significant predictor of increased perceptions of professional comportment. Findings of the current study may assist in establishing more targeted and innovative educational interventions to prevent, or better address, nurse-nurse incivility. Future research should more clearly define professional comportment education, test educational interventions that promote professional comportment in nurses, and further validate the Nurse-Nurse Collaboration Scale as a measure of nurses' professional comportment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Nursing and Healthcare Innovation 2015

We searched in this study aimed at getting to know the process of the (new) qualification through the SENAI in Catalão southeastern of Goiás. This entity acts with the function of education to work, technical assistance and technology for the industry, under the Capitalism System. Annoyed with the simplistic idea that professional qualification holds the unemployment fighting function, to render services to the worker and incorporating it as type of passport to the employability. We corroborated that the professional qualification discourse is endowed of a citizen nature, however essentially ideological in the sense of Marxism term, in other words, the misrepresentation of the reality. This was understood by researches of the interviews the social actors (director, coordinators and teachers) and questionnaires that were applied to students. Viewpoint from social praxes, we come across to a pedagogical environment structured at training and drilling hand labor to the industry. Therefore, we perceived that the professional qualification rises as a powerful mechanism of capitalism social control over work. Its aim is to control work and workers, in other words, to ability them technically and ideologically to the job market. It is not difficult to understand the sense of this qualification, it is enough to analyze that, from technical knowledge point of view , there is an increase of work productivity in the industries and from ideological point of view there is the constant diffusion of contractor culture that possibility the capitalist life value reproduction among workers. So then we set up an educational structure, pedagogy of industry where SENAI is inserting in.

Chirurgiens au féminin ? : socialisation chirurgicale et dispositions sexuées de femmes chirurgiens digestifs / Feminisation of surgeons ? : surgical socialization and gendered dispositions of women general surgeons

Zolesio, Emmanuelle 12 November 2010 (has links)
At the crossing of sociology of professional socialization and sociology of gender, this PdD research studies the population of women general surgeons. It is based on interviews with surgeons (about forty interviews with female surgeons and fifteen with male surgeons) and ethnographic data collected through observation. The study of the statistical exception that are female surgeons is based on the hypothesis that the process of professional socialization and its outcomes would be more visible – because more problematic, less “natural” – than through the study of male surgeons. But, because professional dispositions in surgery are inextricably built and perceived as “masculine”, the research also analyses the social construction of “feminity” and “masculinity” of women surgeons. The first part is devoted to the study of how women who choose surgery put up with some aspects of the profession that make other student avoid it. These aspects are: the business of timetable required by surgery, the lack of inter-personal relations with the patient and the coarse humour of male surgeons. The second part demonstrates that the women who choose surgery have, most of the time, a dispositional heritage perceived as “masculine” and that this incorporation of dispositions socially constructed as masculine occurred in the professional context but also, earlier on, in the context of prior socializations (familial socialization, friend socialisation…). Some “feminine” women surgeons are studied as counterpoint. Finally, the last chapter underlies diachronic dispositional plurality (with a tendency to masculinization at the beginning of the career) and synchronic dispositional plurality (“masculine” with male surgeons, they behave in a more “feminine” way with nurses).
