Arte menor e Arte maior de Donato: tradução, anotação e estudo introdutório / Arte menor and Arte maior by Donato: translation, annotation and introductory study

Lucas Consolin Dezotti 22 March 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims to bring two contributions to the historiography of linguistic thought. The first is a complete and annotated unprecedented translation into Portuguese of Ars Donati, one of the most influential grammatical treatises produced by Greco-Roman culture. The second is an introductory presentation concerning the parts of speech, core of ancient grammatical doctrine and ancestors of our word classes. Ancient sources and recent studies guide the investigation of emergence and establishment of this doctrine in classical antiquity, by the way of a comparative study that seeks evidences of possible influence between dialectics (Plato, Aristotle, Stoics) and grammar as regards the criteria for analysis and classification of linguistic data.

Le tri de mots : pour une grammaire utile aux élèves, dans la continuité et la cohérence / Words sorting

Beaumanoir-Secq, Morgane 08 December 2016 (has links)
Entre grammaire scolaire et linguistique, il s’agit de mieux comprendre le point de vue des élèves sur la langue afin d’ouvrir des pistes de réflexions didactiques / Fitting in the field of research relating to the representations of the pupils on the language, this exploratory study uses a particular didactic device, the sorting of words to grammatical aiming, in order to collect data at the time of the longitudinal follow-up of a class located in zone of priority education, over one two years duration, in CE2 and CM1. The corpus consisted the hard copies produced by the pupils was the object of a statistical processing in order to allow legibility of it. The linguistic and didactic tools for analysis used made it possible to consolidate already put forth hypotheses, but also to release from the new trends concerning the acquisition of the parts of speech by the pupils of the elementary school. The exposed results relate on the knowledge and know-how of the pupils, but also to the lighting which these designs bring on the systems of explanation of the language. Between school and linguistic grammar, it is a question of better understanding the point of view of the pupils on the language in order to open didactic lines of thinking

A metrical analysis of Blackfoot nominal accent in optimality theory

Kaneko, Ikuyo 05 1900 (has links)
Blackfoot (Siksika), an Algonquian language spoken in Southern Alberta and in Northwestern Montana, is claimed to have a pitch-accent system (Frantz 1991). However, no complete analysis of the Blackfoot word accent system is available in the literature. This thesis examines Blackfoot nominal accent by means of metrical analysis (Halle and Vergnaud 1987) in Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky 1993). All of the data in this thesis are elicited from native speakers of Blackfoot. Regardless of noun type, every word contains one and only one pitch peak. Bare nouns (mono-morphemic nouns) and relational nouns (dependent nouns) show that Blackfoot has a mixed predictable and lexical accent system. Accent is quantity-sensitive, i.e. a heavy syllable attracts accent, while in nouns which contain no heavy syllable or more than one heavy syllable, it is lexically specified. An interesting contrast is found in long vowels - they contrast a high-level pitch, a falling pitch, and a rising pitch. Derived nouns (compounds) demonstrate four kinds of accent patterns, depending on the status (free vs. bound) and the accentual property (accented vs. unaccented) of morphemes. The leftmost accent of the compound members is retained, but the accent shifts to the juncture of them if it is word-final. If compound members are unaccented, the accent is assigned to word-final position by default. Speaker variation also occurs. One speaker systematically changes vowel length depending on the type of accented syllable, while the other speaker shows a wide variety of accent patterns. This thesis concludes that all the accent patterns can be accounted for by a single ranking of constraints in an OT analysis, in spite of the fact that the accent system is both lexical and predictable. Addition of constraints is needed specifically for compounds! Speaker variation is accounted for by reranking the same set of constraints. Priority is given to constraints that refer to the predictable accent in the grammar of one speaker. The lexical information is more respected in the other speaker's grammar. In addition to the analysis of general pitch-accent patterns, four types of irregular patterns are examined. The conclusions reached in this thesis demonstrate that the accent system interacts with other phonological properties of Blackfoot. / Arts, Faculty of / Linguistics, Department of / Graduate

A la recherche des spécificités de la tradition grammaticale allemande (1618-1830) / In Search of the Characteristics of the German grammatical Tradition (1618-1830)

Odoul, Marie 13 April 2019 (has links)
This thesis aims to establish a history of the parts of speech in German grammar between the seventeenth and the early nineteenth centuries in order to highlight certain characteristics of the ways German grammar was described. A study of the parts of speech —which are a foundational feature of Western linguistic thought— provides an opportunity to highlight the ways German grammatical discourse is different from, or analogous to, other linguistic traditions. The descriptive trends and processes which emerge from this study can be positioned within the history of German grammar and more broadly within the history of other European grammars. This leads us to consider in more detail the descriptive choices and the theoretical viewpoints governing the development of these grammars. Although the specific features of the German language play a decisive role in the choice of a descriptive model, some initiatives in the second half of the eighteenth century adopt a multi-criterion approach to description, where grammatical categories are established through syntactic analysis. These multi-criterion descriptions, which sometimes present remarkable innovations in the history of grammar, can be seen as contributing to the change in German syntax that takes place in the first third of the nineteenth century. They therefore can reveal certain roots of this turning point in the history of German grammar.

Utterance- and phrase-initial parts of speech in German interactions and textbooks

Seidler, Christopher Fabian January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Modern Languages / Janice McGregor / The current study investigates phrase-initial parts of speech as found in intermediate German textbooks and compares these findings to utterance-initial parts of speech as found in spontaneous speech in German-language interactions. This is important, because learning and using German word order appears to be a struggle for German learners whose first language is English. Research has shown that possible word order realizations in a language are partly restricted by the parts of speech system of that language (Hengeveld, Rijkhoff, & Siewierska, 2004; Vulanovic & Köhler, 2009). This is important because English and German have different parts of speech systems (Hengeveld et. al., 2004; Hengeveld & van Lier, 2010). Doherty (2005) analyzed English to German translations of an international science magazine and found that almost every second sentence begins differently. Instead, this study looks at talk in contexts of use and compares these findings with textbook language because, in recent years, communicative approaches to language teaching have been adopted by a large number of US German language programs. One would thus expect that textbooks used in these classrooms would contain at least some input with constructions that are typical to contexts of use. The results of the study indicate that construction-initial parts of speech in textbooks and in contexts of use are quite different. These differences imply that if it is a communicative approach that is being promoted, textbook authors and German educators would do well to expose students to actual talk from contexts of use so that they might learn to make meaning based on considerations of context.

La genèse d'une classe de mots : les conjonctions dans la tradition (pré-)grammaticale de l'Antiquité grecque

Émond, Catherine 12 1900 (has links)
This research is concerned with the theory of the parts of speech in Greek antiquity and more precisely with the topic of conjunctions. The first chapter examines the definition of the conjunction given in Aristotle’s Poetics, as well as the other texts of the Aristotelian corpus which allow us the get a better grasp on a still ill-defined grammatical entity. The second chapter deals with the conjunction within the logico-grammatical researches of the Stoic school. It examines the Stoic definition of the conjunction, as well as the various categories of conjunctions that were identified by the Stoics. The central role of conjunctions in the Stoic theory of complex assertions is emphasized, thus showing the close interrelation between logic and grammar at this point in the development of grammatical theory. The final chapter is concerned with the definition and the classes of conjunctions given in the Tekhnè grammatikè, a short grammatical treatise ascribed to the Alexandrian philologist Dionysius Thrax. It shows the influence of the Stoic theory of complex assertions on this first attempt at grammatical systematization, as well as the interference of philological concerns.

Sinokorejská slovní zásoba v moderní korejštině / Sinokorean lexicon in modern Korean

Mazaná, Vladislava January 2012 (has links)
1 TITLE: Sino-Korean Lexicon in Modern Korean AUTHOR: Vladislava Mazana DEPARTMENT: Institute of East Asian Studies SUPERVISOR: Mgr. Tomáš Horák, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This diploma paper is focused on morphological aspects of the Sino-Korean lexicon in modern Korean, the main topics are Sino-Korean word-formation and Sino-Korean classification of parts of speech. Hereby considered are the typological differences between Korean, an agglutinative language and Chinese, an isolative-polysyntetic language. The problem with Sino-Korean words is their ambiguity and vagueness, they appear in various grammatical and syntactical functions with their form unchanged. One morpheme can simultaneously function as an affix and root. This paper analyzes forms of function units, it deals with ways of word-formation (composition and derivation). The ways of prefixation and suffixation are researched. Based on the results of this analysis an adequate classification of Sino-Korean parts of speech is aimed to be established. Both the original Korean and the Chinese systems of parts of speech are taken into account but neither of them corresponds with the characterics and functions of the Sino-Korean words. Considering the multifunctional character of Sino-Korean morphemes it is extremely difficult to classify the words into parts of...

Hry a herní aktivity ve výuce morfologie na 1. stupni základní školy / Games and game's activities in the teaching morphology at the first grade of primary school

Veselková, Alice January 2016 (has links)
RESUMÉ V ANGLICKÉM JAZYCE The diploma thesis is focused on parts of speech in the Czech language in the lower primary school. Its aim is to chart it on the general level, to introduce their definition, their historical background and the selection into the word-classes. The theoretical section introduces the parts of speech as the common part of the language. It describes them on basis of the syntactic, semantic and morphological division. That is needed for concrete introduction and realisation of the individual parts of speech. For each word class there is also briefly showed how they are presented in contemporary Czech language textbooks for the lower primary school. The practical part focuses on introduction of new methods of teaching parts of speech mainly through games and unconventional tools. The games contain rules, time management, tools and number of pupils involved. Furthermore., there are the interviews with the teachers of the concrete lower primary school who had got to test the games and tools and summarizes their opinions. Partikule v mluveném jazyce / Particles in spoken languages

Adamovičová, Ana January 2018 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to map a theme, which has not been systematically explored enough by Czech linguists so far. It deals with the material of the Prague Spoken Corpus (PSC), which contains a series of records of authentic spoken language. The thesis presents primarily a comprehensive description of particles, which can be found in the PSC, their semantic classes based on their real occurrence in the natural speech context. It further describes their collocability and syntagmatic relations, including their valency, thus more adequately explains their function in the commonly spoken language. Attention is also paid to their frequency and preferred use within the scope of particular combinations of sociolinguistic parameters, i.e. four variables (sex, age, education and type of discourse) which determined the selection of speakers on recordings to make their combinations as balanced as possible. Some particles are homonymous with other parts of speech - the extent of homonymy and its context dependency just as the processes of particulization are described in the contextual usage of particles and adverbs. The results in terms of the frequency of usage were compared with the frequency of occurrence in the written corpus SYN2005. The presentation of particles in dictionaries of Czech language was...

This paper studies both the relationship between syntactic modification through the use of relative clauses and adjectives and the morphosyntactic organization of the sample languages with respect to parts of speech, in order to lead to a typological generalization. In this sense, the hypothesis under investigation is the possible correlation between the absence of the adjective as a word class and the absence of relative clauses as a construction for the nominal modification. The main consequence of this correspondence is that the noun assumes the modifier function of the adjective and that the nominalized construction assumes the modifier function of the relative clause. Thus, two alternative scenarios are investigated in this research, since it seems unlikely that a language employs a strategy of relativization different from the nominalization one when it does not have adjectives as a morphological class as likely the reverse situation, in which the absence of adjectives is supplied by a relative clause on the role of a nominal modifier. For this work, we adopt the functional approach, essentially empirical, in which data is collected by means of translingual comparison. The data collection was conducted in two stages: the first refers to the description of the relative clause in every Indian language, highlighting the strategy of relativization employed by it; and the second refers to the description of word classes in these languages, especially adjectives and adverbs, which take positions that are syntactically more complex. Because this is a typological investigation, the corpus of analysis must be representative, i.e. the languages under investigation must be genetically, geographically and typologically distant. The corpus of this work consists of 30 indigenous languages, previously described in grammar books, theses or in other descriptive materials such as manuals...
