Coutu-Perrault, Jérémi 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
______________________________________________________________________________

Internal cooling for HP turbine blades

Pearce, Robert January 2016 (has links)
Modern gas turbine engines run at extremely high temperatures which require the high pressure turbine blades to be extensively cooled in order to reach life requirements. This must be done using the minimum amount of coolant in order to reduce the negative impacts on the cycle efficiency. In the design process the cooling configuration and stress distribution must be carefully considered before verification of the design is conducted. Improvements to all three of these blade design areas are presented in this thesis which investigates internal cooling systems in the form of ribbed, radial passages and leading edge impingement systems. The effect of rotation on the heat transfer distribution in ribbed radial passages is investigated. An engine representative triple-pass serpentine passage, typical of a gas turbine mid-chord HP blade passage, is simulated using common industrial RANS CFD methodology with the results compared to those from the RHTR, a rotating experimental facility. The simulations are found to perform well under stationary conditions with the rotational cases proving more challenging. Further study and simulations of radial passages are undertaken in order to understand the salient flow and heat transfer features found, namely the inlet velocity profile and rib orientation relative to the mainstream flow. A consistent rib direction gives improved heat transfer characteristics whilst careful design of inlet conditions could give an optimised heat transfer distribution. The effect of rotation on the heat transfer distribution in leading edge impingement systems is investigated. As for the radial passages, RANS CFD simulations are compared and validated against experimental data from a rotating heat transfer rig. The simulations provide accurate average heat transfer levels under stationary and rotating conditions. The full target surface heat transfer in an engine realistic leading edge impingement system is investigated. Experimental data is compared to RANS CFD simulations. Experimental results are in line with previous studies and the simulations provide reasonable heat transfer predictions. A new method of combined thermal and mechanical analysis is presented and validated for a leading edge impingement system. Conjugate CFD simulations are used to provide a metal temperature distribution for a mechanical analysis. The effect of changes to the geometry and temperature profile on stress levels are studied and methods to improve blade stress levels are presented. The thermal FEA model is used to quantify the effect of HTC alterations on different surfaces within a leading edge impingement system, in terms of both temperature and stress distributions. These are then used to provide improved target HTC distributions in order to increase blade life. A new method using Gaussian process regression for thermal matching is presented and validated for a leading edge impingement case. A simplified model is matched to a full conjugate CFD solution to test the method's quality and reliability. It is then applied to two real engine blades and matched to data from thermal paint tests. The matches obtained are very close, well within experimental accuracy levels, and offer consistency and speed improvements over current methodologies.

Language, Rhetoric, and Reality in Elizabethan Prose Friction

Stephanson, Raymond Alexander 09 1900 (has links)
Pages 19 to 23 have been omitted because of Revision / Elizabethan prose fiction has been virtually ignored for a long time. The question of rhetoric in this fiction is an extremely complex issue, and studies which have examined this aspect are usually stylistic analyses that fragment the works by dissecting isolated passages for stylistic data concerning an author's manipulation of particular schemes and tropes. This approach has often tended to ignore the possibility that larger ideals and attitudes may underlie the use of rhetorical figures (i.e. elocutio) in particular passages. While this dissertation does not attempt to resolve the problems of the relationship between rhetorical training in the grammar schools and Elizabethan fiction, or between the English vernacular rhetorics and Elizabethan fiction, it offers some idea about what these writers thought about rhetoric beyond its status as ornamentation. This thesis tries to discover what these writers thought about the possibilities of rhetorical training --that is, about its moral status as an art of persuasion. In my view, the major writers of Elizabethan prose fiction dramatize the abuses of verbal skills; they explore some of the techniques of deception, distortion and manipulation that are afforded by rhetorical training. The subject-matter of this fiction is largely concerned with verbal methods of persuasion that manipulate and distort, that rely on false logic and dishonesty; these writers are concerned with rhetorical attempts to change the face of the "real" world in order to justify a particular idea, action, or belief. My thesis explicates the prose fictional works of Gascoigne, Lyly, Sidney, Nashe and Deloney with this theory in mind. As well as suggesting the ways in which rhetoric is handled as a subject in a variety of fictional contexts, my thesis also explicates the rhetorical strategies which these authors themselves use to involve their reader in evaluating rhetoric. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Liszt's songs : a reflection of the man and a microcosm of his musical style

Moodie, Noreen Charlotte 11 1900 (has links)
"Liszt's music, unlike that of Mozart, projects the man. With rare immediacy, it gives away the character of the composer. ... " (Brendel 1986, 3) The purpose of this study is to examine Liszt's song genre from an historical and stylistic standpoint as a reflection of Liszt's ongoing personality and style development. this end the following will be presented: - an overview of Liszt's life circumstances which reflect his personality development - a chronological classification ofLiszt's song genre - the songs viewed historically as a reflection of the man - characteristics in the revisions of the songs which reveal Liszt's ongoing developing style - a study of the development ofLiszt's harmonic and tonal language as agents of colour and textual imagery. Liszt's song oeuvre will be studied in relation to the man himself in order to revtal his motives, his values, the experiences that moved him, and the ways in which he reproduced them in music. / Department of Musicology / M.Mus.

Zur Bedeutung des Sehrtschen Magentodes beim Ertrinken

Laturnus, Jan Moritz 28 July 2004 (has links)
The coronial files of drownings from the period 1991-2000 in Berlin (n=129) and Greifswald (n=209) were analysed to assess the frequency and significance of the occurrence of gastric content in the air passages of the deceased. In this context the origin and use of the term "Sehrtscher Magentod" was also clarified by means of a literature review. The "Sehrtscher Magentod" per definition occurs through asphyxiation as vomited stomach content is aspirated during the drowning. RESULTS: From 129 drownings in Berlin, 8 showed signs of gastric content in the air passages (larynx, trachea, bronchis), whilst in Greifswald this figure amounted to 12 out of 209. The study revealed a possible higher occurrence of gastric content in air passages where the deceased were found to have a gastric content quantity exceeding 500ml. Drownings in cold or salt water, or with a high blood alcohol concentration, did not show signs of a possible higher occurrence of gastric content in the air passages. Furthermore, the lung content of those cases showing gastric content in the air passages was examined and discussed regarding the question of a vital aspiration talking in a casuistic descriptual approach. Differences between the two cities with regards to the statistical distribution of age, gender, nature, location and time of drowning, toxicological findings, and lung and gastric features are also included in the study.

Fakhfakh, Nizar 14 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)

The index is defined through the identification and the ordinance of variables based on physical and environment characterization of sidewalks related to aspects of quality such as comfort, security and conditions of the environment. The weighing scale of the variables of physical and environment characterization of sidewalks (importance degree) is carried through analysis based on wheelchair users perception, therefore defining the ISPA - Index of Sidewalks and Passages Accessibility, and verifying its functionality through auditor work also performed with wheelchairs users advice in two places of São Carlos city. Through this tool of evaluation, the agencies of road management can evaluate the quality of the public spaces in a total route or specific stretches of the essential displacements for the real participation of the person with locomotion difficulties in society.
