Accumulation Area Ratio and Equilibrium Line Altitude on the Southern Patagonia Icefield, 2000 - 2010, retrieved using MODIS satellite images

Peterson, Gustaf January 2010 (has links)
Estimations of accumulation area ratio (AAR) and equilibrium line altitude (ELA) were carried out on the Southern Patagonia Icefield. The icefield lies on the border between Chile and Argentina on the southern tip of South America. It is the largest mid-latitude ice mass in the world but despite this fact little research has been conducted in the area. The main reasons for this are most likely the harsh weather conditions and remoteness of the area. However, since icefield’s act as a source for fresh water and as an indicator of climate change more research is crucial. This study focuses on three objectives: to map the snow cover, to estimate AAR and ELA and to discuss their variations during the period 2000 to 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is particularly useful for studying cloudy areas because it’s high temporal resolution increase the chances of acquiring cloud- free images. Satellite images were processed, classified and analyzed. The classification results yielded large interannual variations but also congruity. The pattern of the snow cover suggest substantial wind control on snow accumulation, particularly snow deposition on eastern slopes. No statistically significant trends of AAR and ELA could be detected, although, a vague decrease in AAR and increase in ELA is recognized. Average values of AAR and ELA estimated over the period yields lower AARs and higher ELAs than previously suggested. The average AAR is calculated to be 0.66. Average ELA is estimated to be 970 m.a.s.l. and 1270 m.a.s.l. for the western and eastern sides, respectively.

Cabello Zúñiga, Eduardo Andrés January 2013 (has links)

Transparency - only a trend or a driver for change? : The opportunities of creating a competitive advantage through transparent communication about sustainable business practices.

Tenniglo, Loes, Limbach, Anna Katharina January 2017 (has links)
Purpose:  The purpose of this thesis is to examine how companies can favorablycommunicate their sustainable practices in a transparent way in order tobe perceived as trustworthy so that a competitive advantage canperhaps be achieved. Further, it will be investigated if transparencywithin the supply chain can be used as a fundament for being perceivedas credible by consumers. Method:   The method will be qualitative with an inductive approach. Theresearch will consist of forming a case study based on the companyPatagonia, where primary data will consist of interviews with multipleexperts on the topic. Besides, secondary data will consist of books, journal articles, conference material and information from the websiteof Patagonia. Conclusion:   In this research it was found that transparent communication aboutsustainable business practices can increase the trust in brands and canthus deliver a competitive advantage. Hence, companies need to solelyfocus on the core customer, integrate the customer in thecommunication process and deliver easy and clear information. Thisinformation should educate the customer and thus be perceived asvaluable and trustworthy.

From Yosemite to a Global Market: How Patagonia, Inc. has Created an Environmentally Sustainable and Socially Equitable Model of Supply-Chain Management

Bosco, Mary-Clare 01 January 2017 (has links)
There is an urgent pressure of the time (2016) to re-evaluate our patterns of consumption to adapt to changing climates and reduce waste and pollution. Because an immediate restructuring of global production strategies is not likely any time soon, industrial innovators are finding new ways of redesigning supply-chain management in efforts to move towards environmentally sustainable business in which all manufacturing practices are transparent. Patagonia, Inc. is a testament to the often-debated question of economic value in green business practices, and this thesis acts as an outline as to how they arrived at such an impressive presence in the business world, grow financially, maintain global influence, while maintaining their environmental priorities. Through its transparent and environmentally conscious supply-chain management, Patagonia has effectively set the scene for other producers to follow its lead in a time where redesign and innovation is the only answer to depleting natural resources and the need to eliminate waste. The crucial connection that Patagonia maintains with its consumers can be examined through the inherent environmental psychological analysis of Patagonia’s mission to create the highest quality product while doing the least amount of harm to the environment. The consumers who are buying products to engage in outdoor recreation presumably attach high value to those natural lands and waters that they are venturing out into. Therefore, with this deep emotional significance comes motivation to protect the sanctity of those places on Earth, and support those organizations and businesses that are driven by this same passion.

Sustainable apparel marketing and consumption : An analysis of Patagonia’s Worn Wear video marketing campaign

Syniuk, Artem January 2021 (has links)
Background: The modern world struggles with an environmental crisis and many industry sectors could be considered as non-sustainable. The fashion industry is poorly performing both in ecological and social sustainability due to mass production and apparel waste caused by fast changing fashion. To reduce the negative impact on the ecological and social environment the United Nations developed the Sustainable Development Goals focussing on the economic, social, and ecological sustainability. The apparel industry influenced by the international organisations and the customers sustainability demands is forced to adjust its business strategy towards ecological and socially sustainable business and production. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how the brand Patagonia, a company in the fashion industry, communicates its core values and meanings in its marketing campaign focussed on sustainable production and consumption. By analysing Patagonia`s video series of the Worn Wear marketing campaign, the underlying core values and meaning building the companies brand image on topic of sustainability could be interpreted. Method: This thesis is conducted by applying interpretive thematic analysis and visual analysis by applying the study of semiotics and documentary video analysis. The employed theories allow the researcher to discover meaning and values through conducting a visual analysis. Conclusion: The results show that Patagonia Inc., communicates a total of four major and ten secondary themes on topics of both ecological and social sustainability in the Worn Wear campaign. The themes are representing the importance of slow fashion by repairing the gear and sustainable consumption. The reciprocity between adventures and sustainable environment is being mentioned, and the social and ecological factors are expounded.

Evaluation de l'archive naturelle cernes d'arbre comme traceur du climat passé au nord de la Patagonie / Evaluation of tree-ring archive as paleoclimatic tracer in northern Patagonia

Lavergne, Aliénor 08 January 2016 (has links)
The Southern Hemisphere, and particularly southern South America, are very under-represented in global climate reconstructions due to a lack of robust paleoclimatic data. My thesis was therefore focused on the evaluation of the tree-ring archive, which is widespread along the Andes, as a paleoclimatic tracer. I studied the regional response to external climate forcing of two native species (Fitzroya cupressoides and Nothofagus pumilio) in northern Patagonia (41°S, Argentina), by analysing their different physical tree-ring parameters. In this perspective, I analysed the temporal variations of the width and of the oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the cellulose of their rings and related them to local and large-scale climate variations. Two major results of my thesis have emerged: I highlighted (1) non-linear growth responses over time related to shifts in climate regimes and, (2) the potential of cellulose delta18O and delta13C to record summer-autumn temperature variations over a large area in the mid latitudes of South America (35°-55°S). As their variations are strongly linked to temperature the isotopic tools can be used to reconstruct chronologies of temperature but also of climate modes such as the Southern Annular Mode.
