L’identité juive en question : Irène Némirovsky, Patrick Modiano, Marc Weitzmann / Questioning jewish identity : Irène Némirovsky, Patrick Modiano, Marc WeitzmannQuaglia, Elena 07 June 2017 (has links)
Jewishness, that is to say the personal and singular relationship that an individual experiences regarding their Jewish origins, finds significant resonance in certain literary works. If it is dangerous to assign writers an identity that in and of itself is problematic, it is nonetheless useful to interrogate their relationship with this identity as they make formal and thematic choices. This is less a question of finding a place for writing Jewishness within a canonical and minor literary corpus, instead related to questioning the changing forms of this writing as seen in various epochs and within various aesthetics. Through a corpus composed principally of the works of Irène Némirovsky, Patrick Modiano and Marc Weitzmann, this study examines the evolutions of relationships between writing and Jewishness over three generations of authors, as well as changes in the Jewishliterary consciousness as it faced historical and cultural realities over time. This means paying particular attention to the representation of Jewishness at the crossroads of autobiographical and social discourses. The works of Némirovsky, Modiano and Weitzmann are notably emblematic in their questioning of Jewish identity through a reappropriation of anti-Semitic discourses that is at times ambiguous and at times deflecting.Analyzing these texts, which appeared over the course of almost a century, allows us to open a particular perspective on French literature, including some of its most recent developments. Notably, the question of terrorism as it is linked to the situation in the Middle East, relations with Israel, and the memory of the camps as it becomes more often a post-memory, are at the center not only of Jewish writing, but more generally of trends throughout French literature. Even at the aesthetic level, today’s codified and widespread textual forms such as auto-fiction, “récit de filiation” or “roman archéologique” seem quite capable of hosting investigations of a fleeting or problematic Jewish identity.

l’approprier. / This thesis analyzes the urban space representations, as expressed in Un homme qui
dort by Georges Perec, Journal du dehors by Annie Ernaux and Dans le café de la jeunesse
perdue by Patrick Modiano. It highlights a conflicted and moving parisian imagery during
the second half of the XXth century, with one novel from the late sixties, one diary written
between the eighties and the nineties and one contemporary novel. This is aiming to show
a striking coherence between the studied works. This sociocritical analysis focuses on the
otherness suggested by multiple narratives in the city. The changing urban landscapes,
which are caused by new types of public transportations or renovated and new
neighbourhoods, are related to consumerism. It leads characters and narrators to
semantically reinvest in their city. This brings them inevitably to a question: how could the
city be radically different? How can they find and suggest its otherness? The thesis deals
with the subject’s “shocks” in the city, as expressed by Walter Benjamin, as well as with
his ambiguous relationship with the past and collective memory and also with the narrators’
ability to renew their urban experiences.

[en] PATRICK MODIANO: THE CARTOGRAPHY OF AN AUTHOR, THE WRITING OF A CITY / [pt] PATRICK MODIANO: A CARTOGRAFIA DE UM AUTOR, A ESCRITA DE UMA CIDADEILANA GOLDFELD CARVALHO 21 August 2018 (has links)
[en] Patrick Modiano: The cartography of an author, the writing of a city is an investigation on the role the memory and the city s physical space play in the writing of Patrick Modiano, especially in the book So You Don t Get Lost in the Neighborhood (published in 2015 in Brazil under the name Para você não se perder
no bairro and originally in France in 2014 as Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans le quartier). The 2014 Nobel Prize winner in Literature s literary project is marked by the existence of autobiographical elements and is considered by many critics as autofiction. The present study tries to understand which thematic, linguistic and narrative traits are characteristic of his writing and also uses interviews given by the author to achieve so. It then analyses the different conceptions of memory that can be associated to the author and how these may appear on his texts. The research shows how forgetfulness occupies a prominent place in So You Don t Get Lost in the Neighborhood and the link between the protagonist s process of remembering and Paris, therefore observing how the space may be seen as a repository for memory. Thus, the present work investigates how Modiano draws a map of experience in his books, creating an emotional cartography from remnants of the past.

Kämpen Med Pennan : Det skandinavistiska narrativet i O. P. Sturzen-Beckers Allmänna Öresunds-Posten 1848 / The Fighter With the Pen : The Scandinavianistic narrative in O. P. Sturzen-Becker´s Allmänna Öresunds-Posten 1848Törnsten, Niklas January 2022 (has links)
In this essay the Scandinavianistic narrative is examined in Oscar Patrick Sturzen-Becker's depictions of the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1848 in his newspaper Allmänna Öresunds-Posten. Through both poetry and prosaic agitation, he sought during the first months of the war to gather an opinion for a Swedish intervention for the cause of Denmark against the Prussian-supported uprising in the southern duchies and at the same time work for a consensus on a larger pan-national demarcation with Germany and Europe. He had a dream of a united Scandinavia that was shared by the student movement of the 1840s and contemporary liberal political groups, a dream of a resurrected great power from the past and at the same time a modernized liberal democracy. What the essay intends to analyze is what the Scandinavianistic narrative looked like and in what way it changed with the development of the war. The old hereditary enemy Russia came to be increasingly overshadowed by the new German threat and even though Swedish troops did enter Danish soil for the sake of their Scandinavian brothers, they never joined the battlefield in Schleswig. The military intervention soon turned into a diplomatic pursuit of a temporart ceasefire and peace, so how did Sturzen-Becker's narrative create meaning in these twists and turns and was this period, after all, to be regarded as a part victory for his Scandinavian dreams?

Comparison of the shock arrival times for Earth-directed ICMEs provided by the WSA-Enlil+Cone model and in-situ observations at L1: A Case StudyWerner, Anita Linnéa Elisabeth January 2016 (has links)
A case study which examines the agreement between prediction and data is performed for three, complex interplanetary shocks which were detected at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L1 and induced moderate to intense geomagnetic storms. We use model output from previous runs of the coupled coronal-heliosphere WSA-Enlil+Cone model, available through the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC), and in-situ data from the OMNI data set. Code written in MATLAB is used to compare the model output with the in-situ measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field as well as the density, speed and temperature of the solar wind. In addition, the difference between the predicted and actual shock arrival time is computed and regions of potential temperature depression are identified. A considerable discrepancy is found between data and model for the studied events. The main reason is deemed to be an inadequate representation of the ambient solar wind as well as the complex interactions between interplanetary coronal mass ejections and corotating interaction regions. We suggest future steps to be taken for the further development of the model as well as for the general understanding of space weather and the Sun-Earth connection.

Gavin Hamilton, John Balfour and Patrick Neill : a study of publishing in Edinburgh in the eighteenth centuryMcDougall, Warren January 1975 (has links)
Eighteenth-century Scottish bibliography is a vast subject still awaiting exploration. There are, however, some landmarks to look for and guides to employ. I am thinking particularly, in the context of my own interests, of the writings of Philip Gaskell, and a work that should open up new sources, Robert H. Carnie’s awaited dictionary of the Scottish Book trade. The national Library of Scotland is in the early stages of compliling a catalogue of its eighteenth-century Scottish books which, no matter what form it takes, will provide scholars with a major tool. The description of books has been and doubtless will continue to be a controvertial subject, but those students who have much to identify can take encouragement, I believe from David Foxon’s ‘Thoughts on the History and future of Bibliographical Description’. In this work I map some particular and general areas of Scottish publishing history by examining the partnership of Gavin Hamilton and John Balfour, and the association they formed with the printer Patrick Neill. I study the partners in their own right as booksellers, publishers and printers, but I am concerned also with the larger bibliographical background. Hamilton and Balfour were strong-willed individuals who bought the force of their personal and private interests to bear on their professional lives; Hamilton, especially, in the period under consideration, saw little difference between his duty as a Scottish gentleman and his activities as a Scottish publisher. He and Balfour were far-sighted and adventurous, and deserve to be thought of as central figures in the story of the Edinburgh book trade.

The following thesis examines S??skind?s novella <em>Die Taube</em> (1987) and his short-story <em>Die Geschichte von Herrn Sommer</em> (1991) with respect to the literary identities of the outsiders Jonathan Noel and Herr Sommer. The theoretical framework is based on the deep hermeneutic analysis of Alfred Lorenzer?s literary-psychoanalytic theory (1986) which affords one the opportunity of analyzing the personality and concept of life of the literary figures by examining their interactional patterns and relationship to society.
