Supply chain management applicable to the South African Army camouflage clothing commodity

Wessels, Nelmarie (Nelmarie Jacolien) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT APPLICABLE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN ARMY CAMOUFLAGE CLOTHING COMMODITY There are many reasons for the popularity of the supply chain or the supply chain management concept. Through globalisation, entities are forced to look for more effective ways to coordinate the flow of goods and material between facilities, into and out of the business. Customers are consistently demanding products that are delivered faster, exactly on time, and with no damage. Supply chain management is the systemic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions and the tactics across these business functions within a particular entity and across businesses within the supply chain, for the purpose of improving the long-term performance of the individual entities and the supply chain as a whole. One key objective of supply chain management is to lower the costs required to provide the necessary level of customer service, in order to gain a competitive advantage within a market segment. To be fully effective in today’s competitive environment, entities must expand their integrated behaviour to incorporate customers and suppliers. Low cost and differentiated service help build a competitive advantage for the supply chain. When entities take up a supply chain management philosophy, they must determine and establish management practices that permit them to operate and behave consistent with this philosophy. Performance measurement provides the necessary assistance for performance improvement in pursuit of supply chain excellence. The efficient and effective management of this supply chain with performance measurement and internal controls establishes a solid base for competitive advantage. The SA Army camouflage clothing logistics reveals elements of improvement, as compared to supply chain management principles. Camouflage clothing forms an important element of the total supplies of a soldier in sustaining military and warfare capabilities. Camouflage clothing logistics in the SA Army is a complex mix of physical entities, processes and rules that is governed by mostly conceptual concepts and principles. The SA Army lacks an integrated supply chain philosophy and clear supply chain management principles. Supply chain management can enhance camouflage clothing logistics in the SA Army, if the principles are properly applied. The SA Army is a military institution with peacekeeping operations as their core function. The manufacturing and distribution of clothing is not a core function of the SA Army and can therefore be outsourced to address most of the concerns raised under the present system. Although it would be difficult and cumbersome to implement an integrated supply chain, with supply chain management philosophy and practices, the principle will enhance efficiency and effectiveness in today’s economic environment. The level of outsourcing and the effectiveness of control will determine the degree of success the SA Army will achieve.

The Balanced Scorecard during the early stages of a tech firm : A multiple case study regarding performance management in Swedish tech startups

Llorach, Carlos, Ottosson, Emanuel January 2016 (has links)
The rapid advances in technology and increase of tech investments across all the industries have promoted the emergence of several startups. Unfortunately, not all startups succeed despite of having good initial ideas. One reason to the poor business performance could be a lack of managerial control. Researchers and industry experts believe that performance management could support tech entrepreneurs to monitor and control the drivers that promote growth and their success. However, there is a lack of studies that could support these thoughts about its suitability for tech startups. Therefore, this study gathers empirical findings from Swedish tech startups as well as industry experts to discuss this issue. The findings show that a performance measurement system such as the Balanced Scorecard is a suitable practice for tech entrepreneurs. It also brings some insights about how the performance measurements evolve as the firms mature.

Building and Testing Theory on the Role of IT in the Relationship between Power and Performance: Implementing Enterprise Performance Management in the Organization

Wenger, Mitchell 24 April 2009 (has links)
This research builds on the literature about power and performance, offering new theory that extends the literature by accounting for the transformational effects of information technology. The role of information technology in the relationship between organizational power and performance is unclear in the literature. Management literature offers theories describing the relationship between power and performance. IS literature investigates the relationship between information technology (IT) and power and between information systems technology and performance, but is silent on the impact of IT on the relationship between power and performance. The nature of this relationship – direct, moderating, or indirect – is unknown. Due to the ubiquity of information technology in organizations and society, it is necessary to theorize on the relationship between IT, power and performance. This study evaluates the implementation of Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) solutions in two case study organizations. The use of the IT portion of the EPM is the event of interest. In one case, the EPM implementation is considered a success. In the other, the EPM implementation is considered unsuccessful. Findings from each organization are compared and used to determine the overall research findings. The findings demonstrate the transformational potential of IT on the relationship between power and performance and provide insights that may lead to a deeper understanding of each. The findings of this case study point the way toward development of more detailed constructs and propositions that are testable, measurable, and refutable.

Contribution a l'étude des tableaux de bord dans l'aide a la décision des PME en quête de performances / A contribution to the study of balanced scorecards in the decision support of SMEs in quest of performance

Zian, Houda 28 January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the role of balanced scorecard in managing the performance of SMEs. More specifically, it is to provide an explanatory framework to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. The literature review has allowed, on one hand, to clarify and define key concepts used in this work and, on the other hand, to present and discuss a mixed theoretical framework on which is based the development of our research model. Following a hypothetico-deductive reasoning, an explanatory model to the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards is proposed. This model incorporates one dependent variable "Performance management", nine explanatory variables (organizational and behavioral types), and one intermediate variable "Characteristics of balanced scorecards".This model is then tested empirically. The collected data are processed using an exploratory analysis and a confirmatory analysis by the methods of structural equations. The results help to highlight the determinants of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards. Thus, theoretically, they enrich the previous work on the balanced scorecard and, practically, they provide to management controllers and managers an explanatory framework of the practice of SMEs’ balanced scorecards.

Appraising the performance management practices in the Department of Labour

Mokoena, Wasnaar 08 1900 (has links)
The effective management of individual/team performance is a crucial requirement to ensure that organisational goals are attained. This requires accurate data regarding the performance levels of individuals/teams. Therefore there is a need for a standardised and formal performance management system. An effective performance management system is the centre of an integrated HR system that feeds into a variety of processes and systems such as career planning, rewards, training and development, promotions, and disciplinary decisions. Despite the importance of performance management, most organisations find it difficult to implement, manage and sustain performance management systems and processes effectively. The focus of this study is on appraising the performance management practices in the offices of the Department of Labour in three provinces: Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The results indicate problems with the practices in areas such as alignment, fairness, measuring commitment, systems integrity, and the performance management culture. Recommendations were made to address these issues and improve the effectiveness of the system / Human Resource Management / M. Tech. (Human Resource Development)

Upprätthålla Balanserad Verksamhetsstyrning : Genom Metoden Balanced Scorecard / How to Sustain Balanced Business Management : By the Method Balanced Scorecard

Fredriksson, Sofie, Sjögren, Victoria, Slotte, Carl January 2019 (has links)
Business Management is central to all organizations, a popular approach is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), but how this method should be adapted and used prevails over shared opinions. There have been many previous studies on the actual implementation phase and therefore this study intends to investigate the maintenance phase of BSC. At the centre of this study is experienced leaders with extensive BSC experience and their views about which motives that are critical when successfully maintaining a balanced operations management. We conducted a qualitative study, in which a goal-driven selection with criteria-driven focus was mainly applied. Five people in senior positions were interviewed about their experience working with BSC. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded and then analyzed by a theoretical analysis model created by ourselves. The model was compiled by disagreements, gaps and lack of opinions in BSC literature and research articles. The model was then used to analyze the empirical data. The results that emerged from this study showed that there are areas that affect, promote and inhibit balanced operations management. These areas need to be handled, combined and adapted to their own operations, furthermore the study also shows that BSC is a method that creates conditions for sustaining a balanced business management, given that the method is used correctly. The study is written in Swedish.
