THE COGNITIVE AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF ADOLESCENTS IN THE LEJWELEPUTSWA SCHOOL DISTRICT REGARDING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Harmse, Miranda January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed. (Educ. Psych.)) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013 / Learners who demonstrate inappropriate, anti-social, and/or disruptive behaviours are becoming more prevalent. School personnel are dealing with disruptive behaviours that occur more frequently and that affect staff and learners’ performance. According to Farrell, Meyer, Sullivan and Kung (2003) this prevalence of disruptive behaviour and underperformance in secondary schools is posing a threat to education in South Africa and learners struggle with problems that predispose them to long-term negative outcomes. As children become adolescents, they experience a variety of physical, emotional and interpersonal changes while simultaneously transitioning from elementary to middle school. If the transition is stressful and the climate of the school appears unwelcoming, low self-esteem, a decline in academic achievement and inappropriate behaviour problems may follow (Wagerman & Funder, 2007).Escalating concern regarding disruptive behaviour in schools has led to intensified efforts to understand its causes and consequences, and to identify effective practices and strategies to reduce its occurrence. It is against this backdrop that the researcher attempts to determine the cognitive and social well-being of adolescents regarding emotional intelligence in the Lejweleputswa school district. The research followed a mixed method approach, using the sequential explanatory triangulation type; where questionnaires were completed by secondary school learners followed by interviews with teachers from conveniently selected secondary schools in the Lejweleputswa district of the Free State. The Literature study showed that factors such as learning, intelligence and emotional intelligence were associated with cognitive and social well-being of secondary schools learners. The following data collection instruments were used to gather information regarding the topic. For the quantitative study, a closed ended questionnaire was developed and utilised by one hundred and seventy four (174) learners. For the qualitative part, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten (10) teachers. By using COSOC, the three-way ANOVA and T-test, the seven hypotheses of the study were tested and the findings indicated that there is a significant relationship between and within the independent variables being; gender, grade and residential with regard to cognitive and social emotional intelligence. This study will reveal what aspects of education practices are viewed as helpful as well as areas needing improvement. It will also give insight into whether selected schools are using proactive strategies and techniques demonstrated in the research as being the most effective in terms of changing inappropriate behaviour and underperformance.

Performance Comparison of Projective Elliptic-curve Point Multiplication in 64-bit x86 Runtime Environment

Winson, Ninh 26 September 2014 (has links)
For over two decades, mathematicians and cryptologists have evaluated and presented the theoretical performance of Elliptic-curve scalar point-multiplication in projective geometry. Because computation in projective domain is composed of a wide array of formulations and computing optimizations, there is not a comprehensive performance comparison of point-multiplication using projective transformation available to verify its realistic efficiency in 64-bit x86 computing platforms. Today, research on explicit mathematical formulations in projective domain continues to excel by seeking higher computational efficiency and ease of realization. An explicit performance evaluation will help implementers choose better implementation methods and improve Elliptic-curve scalar point-multiplication. This paper was founded on the practical solution that obtaining realistic performance figures should be based on more precise computational cost metrics and specific computing platforms. As part of that solution, an empirical performance benchmark comparison between two approaches implementing projective Elliptic-curve scalar point-multiplication will be presented to provide the selection of, and subsequently ways to improve scalar point-multiplication technology executing in a 64-bit x86 runtime environment.

An Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Contract Frame and Discretion in Performance Evaluation on Effort

Ewing, Robert 01 January 2016 (has links)
The design of incentive compensation plans is critical to a company’s success. This study develops and validates a theoretical model to examine how incentive contract framing affects effort. This study uses an experiment to observe the effect of the manipulation of incentive contract frame and the presence or absence of principal discretion in performance evaluation on effort. The results of the experiment show that when principal discretion in performance evaluation is absent, penalty contracts induce greater effort than bonus contracts. The results of the experiment also demonstrate that the interaction of principal discretion in performance evaluation and contract frame influences how agents view the perceived fairness of their incentive contract. Specifically, principal discretion in performance evaluation increases perceived fairness under a penalty contract but not under a bonus contract. This study also extends prior research by documenting that perceived fairness explains how incentive contract frame affects trust and effort.

EVOLUTION OF THE COST EFFECTIVE, HIGH PERFORMANCE GROUND SYSTEMS: A QUANTITATIVE APPROACH

Hazra, Tushar K., Stephenson, Richard A., Troendly, Gregory M. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / During the recent years of small satellite space access missions, the trend has been towards designing low-cost ground control centers to maintain the space/ground cost ratio. The use of personal computers (PC) in combination with high speed transputer modules as embedded parallel processors, provides a relatively affordable, highly versatile, and reliable desktop workstation upon which satellite telemetry systems can be built to meet the ever-growing challenge of the space missions today and of the future. This paper presents the feasibility of cost effective, high performance ground systems and a quantitative analysis and study in terms of performance, speedup, efficiency, and the compatibility of the architecture to commercial off the shelf (COTS) tools, and finally, introduces an operational high performance, low cost ground system to strengthen the insight of the concept.

Delivering peak performance through focused career management

Hako, Vuyani Wellington 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Wealth today cannot be merely measured by material acquisition but also by depth of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. This knowledge, wisdom and understanding lie in the human capital of the organisation. The dynamic nature of business today demands a constant renewal in the aspirations of the employee. Therefore, the performance of the employee in any organisation becomes the most important component. If an organisation is to gain competitive advantage, it must understand how people think, feel and act and then utilize that understanding to increase human performance. The study argues that one of the important feelings that must be understood in order to increase people effectiveness in an organisation is career management. Career management is investing in the minds of the people. The minds of the people are the source of wealth. Developing people to improve their knowledge, skills and capabilities is fundamental to the overall performance of an organisation. Career management helps identify specific talents and behaviours an individual must bring to the job. Career management also brings prosperity and job satisfaction to the individual. Career management as a system to capitalize on the employee's talents and potential should begin with a strong emphasis on personal empowerment and the elimination of self-directed negativity. Against this background, the study looks very deeply into the importance of self management. Further, the organisation itself needs to understand that peak performance is not an event but the life of the business. Whenever the results are announced the competitor listens to establish ways of doing the best. To keep up with the spirit of competitive advantage and gaining peak performance all the time, the organisation must constantly devise means to engage the emotional commitment of the employee. Such means must include career management strategies as also an attempt for employee retention. The organisation must position itself to be a facilitator of career coaching. As a facilitator of career coaching the organisation is able to plan the career success and happiness of the employee.

Title: Reducing Supplier Lead time – a case study on Supplier Lead Time at purchasing companies Authors: Johanna Jönsson and Melinda Luong Tutor: Dr. Åsa Gustavsson Examiner: Dr. Lars-Olof Rask Course code: 4FE06E - Master Thesis _________________________________________________________________________ Research questions: ●  How are companies working with and defining Supplier Lead Time? ●  What activities are included to reduce Supplier Lead Time? ●  How can companies further develop their work to reduce Supplier Lead Time? Purpose: The purpose of this Master Thesis is to describe and explain how purchasing companies are working to reduce Supplier Lead Time, in order to maintain or achieve an efficient and flexible supply chain. Moreover the study aims to recommend what approaches companies could further use to reduce Supplier Lead time. Method: To answer these research questions the authors have done two case studies. The theoretical material has been collected and processed, which has formed the basis for the semi-structured interview guide that was answered by the interviewees. The authors also attended meetings to get other inputs about the subject. Conclusion: IKEA Components are today taking different actions to improve the SLT but can improve their volume agreements (AGV) by aligning all involved parts and have a functional leader that makes sure that they follow it up. At IKEA IMS the authors recommend them to work with volume commitments with suppliers and develop a clearer structure for who is responsible for improving the SLT and evaluating it. Localised routing algorithms in communication networks with Quality of Service constraints : performance evaluation and enhancement of new localised routing approaches to provide Quality of Service for computer and communication networks

Mohammad, Abdulbaset H. T. January 2010 (has links)
The Quality of Service (QoS) is a profound concept which is gaining increasing attention in the Internet industry. Best-effort applications are now no longer acceptable in certain situations needing high bandwidth provisioning, low loss and streaming of multimedia applications. New emerging multimedia applications are requiring new levels of quality of services beyond those supported by best-effort networks. Quality of service routing is an essential part in any QoS architecture in communication networks. QoS routing aims to select a path among the many possible choices that has sufficient resources to accommodate the QoS requirements. QoS routing can significantly improve the network performance due to its awareness of the network QoS state. Most QoS routing algorithms require maintenance of the global network's state information to make routing decisions. Global state information needs to be periodically exchanged among routers since the efficiency of a routing algorithm depends on link-state information accuracy. However, most QoS routing algorithms suffer from scalability due to the high communication overhead and the high computation effort associated with maintaining accurate link state information and distributing global state information to each node in the network. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to contribute towards enhancing the scalability of QoS routing algorithms. Towards this goal, the thesis is focused on Localised QoS routing algorithms proposed to overcome the problems of using global network state information. Using such an approach, the source node makes routing decisions based on the local state information for each node in the path. Localised QoS routing algorithms avoid the problems associated in the global network state, like high communication and processing overheads. In Localised QoS routing algorithms each source node maintains a predetermined set of candidate paths for each destination and avoids the problems associated with the maintenance of a global network state by using locally collected flow statistics and flow blocking probabilities.
