Beyond a Social-cognitive Perspective on Doping - Towards an Integrative Model of Person-Situation Interactions

Melzer, Marcus 13 June 2023 (has links)
Weiterführende Implikationen für die Dopingforschung und -prävention werden diskutiert.:List of Publications III List of Figures IV List of Tables VI Abstract VII Zusammenfassung VIII 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Historical Overview on Doping in Sports 1 1.2 Defining Doping - Strengths and Weaknesses 3 1.2.1 World Anti-Doping Code 4 1.2.2 Limitations of WADA Code 6 1.2.3 Doping as (Deviant) Social Behavior 7 2 A Review on Current Research on Doping 11 2.1 Prevalence of Doping Elite and Recreational Sport 11 2.2 Doping and Legal and Illegal Substance (Mis-)Use 15 2.3 Doping and Related Personal and Situational Factors 19 3 Modelling Doping - A Theoretical Overview 21 3.1 A Summary of Relevant Theories on Doping 21 3.1.1 Theory of Planned Behavior 21 3.1.2 Sport Drug Control Model 22 3.1.3 Life Cycle Model 24 3.1.4 Trans-contextual Model of Avoid Doping 25 3.2 A Dual-process Perspective on Doping 27 3.3 A Person-Situation Perspective - Impact of Situation and Context 31 3.4 A Gateway to Doping 34 3.5 Implication for Further Theoretical Discussion 37 4 Aim of Thesis and General Research Questions 39 5 Publications 43 5.1 Publication Manuscript 1 43 5.2 Publication Manuscript 2 51 5.3 Publication Manuscript 3 61 6 General Discussion and Conclusion 79 6.1 Future Perspectives on Research of Doping Attitudes 79 6.2 A Different Understanding of the Person-Situation Interaction 81 6.3 Bridging the Gap - An Integrative Model of Person and Situation 82 6.3.1 Situational Action Theory (SAT) 82 6.3.2 SAT - New Implications for Doping Research 90 6.4 Future Implications and Challenges for Doping Prevention 95 6.5 Conclusion 97 7 References 101 8 Appendix 130 8.1 Thesis Statement of Originality 130 8.2 Statement of Authorship 131 8.3 Curriculum Vitae 132 / Doping - as a psychosocial behavior - is more than simply violating anti-doping rules and laws. Doping has become a part of high-performance and recreational sports. Attitudes toward doping among athletes have been sufficiently proven as an important impact factor. However, theoretical consideration of the person-situation mode with other relevant factors (e.g., moral disengagement or situational factors) into an integrated understanding of doping is still needed. The first study presented in this thesis focusses on methodological issues and the assessment of implicit doping attitudes. Based on dual process theories of attitudes (e.g., Fazio, 1990), the first paper discusses the indirect measurement of doping attitudes via the Implicit Association Test (Greenwald et al., 1998) as a tool to overcome limitations of self-reported attitudes. The second study presented here uses a broader understanding of doping and focuses on the parallelism of doping and doping-like behavior. The study analyzes the use of NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) in different intake situations. The influence of situation and person factors is tested by using the assumption of high- and low-cost situations from the Rational Choice Theory and Routine Activity Approach (e.g., Clarke & Cornish, 1985; Cohen & Felson, 1979). Finally, research has shown that moral decision-making has an impact on doping behavior (e.g., Ntoumanis et al., 2014). Ethical dilemma training (e.g., Elbe & Brand, 2016) may be employed as a new method to increase moral decision-making ability and to strengthen moral values and beliefs. Accordingly, the third research paper presented discusses this as a new approach to doping prevention. Overall, this thesis introduces Situational Action Theory ( e.g., Wikström, 2014) as an integrative theoretical approach, focussing on the person-situation interaction, as well as on moral decision-making. Further implications for doping research and for prevention are discussed.:List of Publications III List of Figures IV List of Tables VI Abstract VII Zusammenfassung VIII 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Historical Overview on Doping in Sports 1 1.2 Defining Doping - Strengths and Weaknesses 3 1.2.1 World Anti-Doping Code 4 1.2.2 Limitations of WADA Code 6 1.2.3 Doping as (Deviant) Social Behavior 7 2 A Review on Current Research on Doping 11 2.1 Prevalence of Doping Elite and Recreational Sport 11 2.2 Doping and Legal and Illegal Substance (Mis-)Use 15 2.3 Doping and Related Personal and Situational Factors 19 3 Modelling Doping - A Theoretical Overview 21 3.1 A Summary of Relevant Theories on Doping 21 3.1.1 Theory of Planned Behavior 21 3.1.2 Sport Drug Control Model 22 3.1.3 Life Cycle Model 24 3.1.4 Trans-contextual Model of Avoid Doping 25 3.2 A Dual-process Perspective on Doping 27 3.3 A Person-Situation Perspective - Impact of Situation and Context 31 3.4 A Gateway to Doping 34 3.5 Implication for Further Theoretical Discussion 37 4 Aim of Thesis and General Research Questions 39 5 Publications 43 5.1 Publication Manuscript 1 43 5.2 Publication Manuscript 2 51 5.3 Publication Manuscript 3 61 6 General Discussion and Conclusion 79 6.1 Future Perspectives on Research of Doping Attitudes 79 6.2 A Different Understanding of the Person-Situation Interaction 81 6.3 Bridging the Gap - An Integrative Model of Person and Situation 82 6.3.1 Situational Action Theory (SAT) 82 6.3.2 SAT - New Implications for Doping Research 90 6.4 Future Implications and Challenges for Doping Prevention 95 6.5 Conclusion 97 7 References 101 8 Appendix 130 8.1 Thesis Statement of Originality 130 8.2 Statement of Authorship 131 8.3 Curriculum Vitae 132

The narcissism in situations framework for the study of narcissism in social interactions

Maaß, Ulrike 15 September 2016 (has links)
The present dissertation presents a conceptual framework for the study of narcissism in social interactions (NARCissism In Situations: NARCIS). This framework differentiates between situation-invariant variables (e.g., trait narcissism) and situation-varying variables (e.g., positive feedback) for the prediction of narcissistic behavior. It built the theoretical basis for three studies that were placed along the time line of social interactions (i.e., at the beginning, in the daily intercourse, and within long-term friendships). Study 1 examined whether the manifestation of individual differences in narcissism reduce in situations that include strong cues for the appropriateness of self-promotional behavior, as trait activation theory (Tett & Burnett, 2003) would expect. It was concluded that the grandiose core of narcissism was insensitive to the influence of situation-varying variables in terms of cue strength for self-promotion. Study 2 investigated narcissism within social interactions in everyday life following an experience-sampling design in three consecutive substudies. In contrast to the findings from the first study, results of Study 2 showed that there was a strong situational influence on the expression of state narcissism - regardless of the individual’s narcissism trait level. For example, both negative social feedback and positive feedback increased state narcissism levels due to ego protection or ego boosting mechanisms. The results question the role of trait self-esteem but underscore the importance of state self-esteem on state narcissism. Last but not least, Study 3 demonstrated that with increasing distinctive similarity (i.e., the similarity in the two friends’ norm-deviating parts) in narcissism of two best friends’ their distinctive similarities in their Big Five profiles augmented as well. Implications for situation-specific aspects of narcissism within long-term friendships are discussed.

The Interplay of Personality, Situations, Affect, and Behavior

Horstmann, Kai Tobias 10 August 2018 (has links)
Part 1 of the current work briefly reviews the person-situation debate and addresses the definition of personality traits and states. Central to the person situation debate was the definition of consistency. In the first empirical study presented here, we examined consistency in more detail. We introduced the concepts of simple and residual consistency, and showed how functionally equivalent situations may influence behavior, even after controlling for effects of personality. Part 2 is concerned with the definition and measurement of situations. In two book chapters, we reviewed the past development of situation research and specific challenges that can be faced during the construction of measures for situation dimensions. We then present a new taxonomy for the description of situations, the Situation Five, as well as a measurement tool to assess situation perception, a person’s interpretation and perception of situations. Part 3 addresses the validation of existing situation measures and, more specifically, the potential overlap of affect and situation perception. I the first empirical study, we examined this overlap, which turned out to be substantial. In the second study, we investigated if this overlap threatened the validity of situation measures: Would measures of situation perception predict behavior in daily life after controlling for affect? As it turned out, they did – and more importantly, controlling for affect unveiled specific, logically coherent links between situation perception and behavior. Part 4 then discusses implications of the current work. A special focus is placed on explaining why affect and situation perception were correlated and yet contributed uniquely to the explanation of variance in behavior. To summarize, appraisal theories of emotion may serve well as a general framework for understanding the processes involved in situation perception. Part 5 then briefly discusses implications of the current work for future research.

The Role of Personality in Construing and Reacting to Work Situations

Rachel M Saef (7027604) 15 August 2019 (has links)
An understanding of how objective situational features are construed by individuals is essential to uncovering the dynamic process through which the “situation” (e.g., specific work events) interacts with personality in shaping behavior in the workplace. The current study aims to illuminate 1) how personality influences the way employees typically perceive work contexts (i.e., being at work), in general; 2) the role of personality in shaping employee’s unique construal of specific work situations; and 3) the effect of personality-driven situation perception on extra-role behaviors. I used the recently developed CAPTION framework of psychological situational characteristics that define 7 dimensions of situation perception to examine how personality traits influence the perception of being at work, in general. Then, to address Research Question 2, I mapped frequently occurring types of work situations (coded for objective descriptors; e.g., “who,” “when,” “what,” “where”) onto the CAPTION dimensions to investigate whether and how personality traits explain systematic differences in the psychological situational characteristics ascribed to specific types of commonly occurring situations. Finally, to address Research Question 3, I examined how personality-driven situation perception predicted individual differences in work behaviors, specifically personality-relevant behaviors, organizational citizenship behavior, and counterproductive behavior. I then discuss implications for theoretical perspectives that discuss the person-situation effect, as well as insights for how organizations may improve work outcomes through organizational context.

Perfectionism and self-compassion - An experimental study regarding how perfectionism and self-compassion affect essay writing and proof-reading in different affective situations.

Ermstål, Isabella January 2015 (has links)
