This dissertation organizes the Modern Sinhala lexicon within the framework proposed by Lieber in The Organization of The Lexicon, 1981. Following Lieber, Sinhala verb, noun and affix morphemes are analysed descriptively and their lexical processes, both derivational and compounding, are examined within the theoretical parameters of that work. This dissertation argues that tense marking in verb morphology and number in noun morphology (which also includes definite and indefinite marking) are best accounted for as derivational processes in contrast to the traditionally accepted inflectional processes. It is claimed that in noun and verb categories, allomorphy is a factor in the underlying representation of the lexicon. On the other hand, allomorphy in noun number marking affixes is due to a morphological rule sensitive to class membership of nouns. Going beyond The Organization of The Lexicon which is limited to morphological rules, this study includes phonological rules operating in the lexicon. Finally, in accord with the results of this dissertation two suggestions are made: First, it is essential that a complete study of Modern Sinhala phonology include an extensive investigation of the syllable structure; Second, the concept of level ordering in the lexicon should be utilized to account for the hierarchical distribution of affixes. Support for the first suggestion rests on the morpholexical rules, while the second rests on the hierarchical distribution of affixes described by subcategorization and X-bar indexing in this study. / Graduate

The research's subjects attend secondary school classes and their age range from eight to eleven years. The main goals of this study were: (i) to identify the deviations presented from the students in writing texts and (ii) to investigate in what measure, the pedagogic games provided by the government - memory games, puzzles, dominos, among others - contribute to the development of phonological awareness and consequently, the writing acquisition in the researched subjects. In order to achieve our goals, we essentially went through three steps: (a) writing a test application: initially, a writing test was developed, and after the school authorization, the approval by the research ethics committee (humans beings)and the authorization from the legal representatives, the test application was performed along the students from the pedagogical resource room; (b) Identification of the students' writing deviations: from the application test: all writing deviations were selected and categorized based on the criteria by Bortoni-Ricardo (2005); (c) Pedagogical games analysis: after the analysis and categorization of the deviations found, an application script and analysis of games distributed in schools by the federal government were created to observe whether they significantly contribute to minimize the deviations found in the students' writing, and whether the students are developing phonological awareness and the linguistic reflection. Para isso, investigamos, através de alguns dos principais métodos de descrição da entoação, do ponto de vista perceptivo (fonologia funcional) e do ponto de vista acústico (modelo autossegmental), qual a relação entre a percepção e a realidade física do som na análise do fenômeno da entoação. Nossa intenção é provar que essa correlação é tanto possível quanto viável. Para alcançar esse resultado, fizemos, primeiramente, uma descrição individual das duas abordagens eleitas para essa comparação. Uma das abordagens diz respeito ao estudo auditivo desenvolvido por Halliday (1970) e adaptado por Cagliari (1982/2007) para a análise dos dados do português brasileiro. A outra é de base acústica e segue o modelo de análise autossegmental, desenvolvido por Pierrehumbert (1980). Feito isso, propomos uma comparação entre os dois modelos, trazendo à baila suas semelhanças e diferenças, com o intuito de chegarmos a um possível paralelo entre eles. O resultado mostrou, mais uma vez, uma correspondência entre... / The aim of this dissertation is the analysis of the correlation between acoustic and auditory data, in order to verify whether the acoustic analysis follows or not the auditory recognition. For this, we investigated, with some of main methods of description of intonation, the perception (functional phonology) and the acoustics (autossegmental model), what is the relation between perception and physical reality in the analysis of intonation. Our intention is to prove that this correlation is as much possible as feasible. We started with the description of the two approaches chosen for our comparison. One of them is concerned with the auditory approach. This theory was developed by Halliday (1970), according to Cagliari (1982/2007), who adapted Halliday‟s model to describe the intonation of Brazilian Portuguese. The other, is the acoustic approach developed by Pierrehumbert (1980) autossegmental approach. We propose a comparison between the two theories, bringing up their similarities and differences in order to reach a possible comparative parallel between them. The results showed that, despite the formal differences, similarities between the two approaches. Based on this idea, we made a detailed acoustic analysis of our data with the software PRAAT and an auditory analysis of the same data (following the Halliday‟s and Cagliari‟s methodology). The analyses describe the phonological structure of intonation of a short passage from the book História sem fim (The Neverending Story) (sd). A ordem de aquisição dos padrões silábicos na escrita foi verificada a partir de um corpus composto de seis cartilhas adotadas no município de Catalão-GO (A toca do tatu, Língua e linguagem, Português: uma proposta para o letramento, Viver e aprender, Palavra em contexto e Nosso mundo) por ser este o instrumento de uso mais comum dos professores de Catalão-GO para ensino de língua escrita. Estruturalmente, esta tese se subdivide em quatro seções. A primeira trata de questões mais gerais sobre a alfabetização, em que discutimos também um pouco de história da cartilha, seu método e as expectativas do governo em relação à alfabetização no Brasil. Na seção 2, versamos sobre sistemas de escrita e ortografia. A terceira seção se ocupa das teorias fonológicas sobre a sílaba, necessárias para a análise das cartilhas que é feita na seção 4. Na conclusão de nosso trabalho, afirmamos que os trabalhos e pesquisas de aquisição dos padrões silábicos do português, tanto do brasileiro quanto do europeu, apontam uma ordem “natural” de emergência desses padrões na aquisição da fala que é seguida, com raras e não significativas diferenças, pelas cartilhas por nós pesquisadas. Assim sendo, os métodos que dão suporte aos livros didáticos analisados, todos calcados no conceito de sílaba ou métodos que empregam o “bá-bé-bi-bó-bu”, deveriam ser eficazes, uma vez que se baseiam em uma “ordem natural” de aquisição de padrões silábicos. No entanto, o que verificamos é que a origem do fracasso dos métodos não pode estar na ordem de apresentação dos padrões silábicos pelas cartilhas... / This thesis aims to verify whether the order of presentation of syllabic patterns in literacy books is or is not in accordance with the order of emergence of these patterns in oral language acquisition. Because didactical books named cartilhas are still the most important instrument for literacy teachers in Brazil, the corpus is composed by six cartilhas, adopted in the city of Catalão - GO: A toca do tatu, Língua e Linguagem, Português: uma proposta para o letramento, Viver e aprender, Palavra em contexto and Nosso Mundo. Our research shows that this natural order is followed with no significant differences by literacy books, in the school programmes for written language acquisition. From this point of view, this method is expected to be efficient; unfortunately, it does not happen to be true. Since the cartilhas follow the natural order of emergence for syllabic patterns, the cause of the failure of the method must be somewhere else, probably in the fact that our literacy methods consider the syllable as the ideal unit of representation for teaching our writing system, although our writing system is not syllable-based in its essence.

Em seguida, submetemos uma amostra desses nomes comerciais que mantém sua grafia inglesa a leitura por falantes do PB e do PE, com a intenção de comparar as realizações desses sujeitos com a pronúncia dessas palavras em Inglês Norte-Americano (IA). A partir da transcrição fonética dos dados, analisamos os principais processos fonológicos desencadeados por esses informantes ao produzirem nomes com palavras da língua inglesa, a saber: a) adaptações segmentais; b) epêntese; c) apagamento; d) vocalização de /l/ em posição de coda silábica; e) nasalização; f) palatalização; g) ambissilabicidade e h) deslocamento de acento. The topic discussed is straightly linked to the determination of Portuguese linguistic identity, because this study focuses on linguistic and extralinguistic aspects that motivate the use of foreign trade names in Brazil and Portugal. For this study, we first collected trade names with elements of English in São Paulo countryside (Brazil) and Lisbon (Portugal). Using a sample of these trade names that keep its English spelling, recordings were carried out with both BP and EP speakers to compare with the pronunciation of these words in North American English (AE). This dissertation explores Spanish nominal plural formation from a morphophonological perspective. The primary objective is to better understand heritage bilinguals' (HBs') phonological categorization of the morphological element of number in their heritage language. This is done by way of picture-naming elicitation tasks of consonant-final nouns and through comparison with first language, Spanish-dominant speakers and second language learners. In addition to the sociolinguistic factors of linguistic experience and quantity of explicit input, lexical frequency and morphological word class are also assessed. The recorded responses from the 148 participants are coded and submitted to a series of binary logistic regression analyses in IBM SPSS Statistics. It is shown that HBs distinguish between different morphological classes and that this has a prominent role in the pluralization of consonant-final nouns in Spanish. Moreover, the present research details the use of not two but three productive plural markers for HBs in Spanish: -es, -s, Ø. The interface approach adopted in this dissertation is proven to more definitively explain plural formation as it examines the connectedness between phonology, morphology, and the lexicon, thus overcoming previous accounts which focused on the influences of these disciplines in isolation.
