Performance of 3D printed concrete formworks for bridge pillars focusing on casting

In this context, the main objective of this project is to determine if 3D printed concreteformworks are able to not fall apart and later withstand the stresses produced byC40/50 and selfcompactingconcrete (SCC) castings. The purpose is to check thesuitability of this method applied to the construction of bridge pillars and its capabilityof covering and protecting the reinforcement placed in the casting. The methodconsists of the design and construction of the formworks, the casting of the SCCcolumns and the performance of compression and bond tests to samples extracted fromthe sections presented to check the resistance and the bond between the formwork andthe interior concrete casting.The results obtained showed that the formworks did not fall apart and could withstandthe stresses caused by the casting. In addition, the casting presented a better bond atthe bottom of the sections in both cases. Although C40/50 presented a higher bondand compression strength than SCC, it showed a bond problem at the top part thathighlighted the importance of vibrating the concrete mix properly.After analysing all the results a clear conclusion is not reached, so further research inthis field needs to be done in order to build bridge pillars with this technology.

Assessing the suitability of sustainability frameworks for embedding sustainability in higher education curricula: pragmatism versus transformation

Yes / Purpose. This viewpoint paper addresses the use of sustainability frameworks in embedding education for sustainability into the curriculum of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). We focus on the paradox that sustainability frameworks must facilitate transformation of existing structures whilst also being well-enough aligned with current conditions to be readily adopted by today’s HEIs. Design/methodology/approach. We propose a set of four criteria for assessing the suitability of sustainability frameworks for use across the curriculum: Relevance to Current Curricula; Language; Institutional Fit; and Concept of the Future. Using these criteria, we assess how various frameworks align with the current (unsustainable) state of affairs, and their transformative potential. The frameworks assessed are: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the Three Pillars Framework; and the Capitals Approach. Findings. We find that each of the frameworks has strengths and weaknesses: the SDGs and the Capitals Approach perform well on alignment, but less well on transformation. Conversely, the Three Pillars Framework perform well on transformation and less well on alignment. By applying the criteria set out in this paper, we hope those working to embed sustainability into the curricula of HEIs will be better equipped to navigate the tensions presented by sustainability transitions. Originality. Mapping drainage of the rootless shield volcano at Dimmuborgir, northern Iceland

Dimmuborgir is thought to be a former rootless shield volcano, which was fed with lava from a nearby crater row, 2170 ± 38 calendar years before present. In this study, the orientation of striations on the sides of lava channels, collapse structures and lava pillars were measured to find out how the enigmatic ~2 km by 2 km volcanic structure at Dimmuborgir was drained. During one week of field work 149 striations were found and measured, with respect to their dip angle, dip direction and elevation. Their locations were recorded with a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver. The orientations of the striations were visualized on Google Earth satellite images and on images from a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of Dimmuborgir. Resulting visualizations show that Dimmuborgir was drained radially and in multiple stages. It is concluded that Dimmuborgir was drained towards the west, the northeast and the southeast. The drainage towards the west was channeled. The drainage towards the northeast and the southeast was radially inwards, towards the collapsed parts of Dimmuborgir.
