Participation of indigenous games by youth in Ga-Ledwaba Village in Lebowakgomo in Lepelle Nkumpi DistrictSegwapa, Salamina 20 September 2019 (has links)
MAAS / Department of African Studies / The main purpose of the study was to explore factors that contribute to the extinction of traditional games in Lepelle Nkumpi District, Limpopo Province. This study utilized a qualitative approach to identify factors that contribute to the disappearance of indigenous games in communities. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were used for data collection and data was analyzed using thematic approach. The population was comprised of youth from Ga-Ledwaba village who played the games before or watched them. Purposive sampling was used to select five youths and five knowledge holders. The study found that young people at Ga-Ledwaba village do not play indigenous games like they were played before. Furthermore, the study revealed reasons that hinder young people from participating in indigenous games such as loss of interest because games are not properly introduced and facilitated in the village, knowledge holders have lost interest in transferring their skills and being role models to youth, technology is taking over, young people spend most of their free time on electronic devices that allow them to access most of the social media and games. The study recommends that proper planning and implementation is needed to ensure that programmes run smooth by involving parents and schools in the decision making to create a sense of ownership around the community. / NRF

Play can be seen as a very important component in the learning programme of pre-school children. The question arises whether the Gr R teacher has adequate play incorporated into the daily schedule?
The research question was answered as follows. Although it was revealed in the study that the teachers who had pre-primary and Bed qualifications, possessed more (play) knowledge of all the teachers, the rest of the Gr R teachers indicated that they did have a need to gather more knowledge in childrens’ play, as well as implementing it into the day programme.
The third part of the research question was also answered namely; that too much formal education were taking place in the Gr R classes in primary schools. The answer to the question; whether there is enough play in the Gr R class in a primary school is; “no”,
10
and whether there is enough play in the Gr R class in the pre-primary school is; “yes”. It was concluded that the Gr R education methods in the primary school is far more formal than that of the pre-primary school. The research question is thus fully answered and the study was completed successfully.
Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Teacher-directed play as a tool to develop emergent mathematics concepts : a neuro-psychological perspectiveHelmbold, Erika Geertruida 11 1900 (has links)
Recent research has elucidated the sustained benefits of early mathematics instruction. With growing concern about the performance of South Africa’s senior learners in mathematics, it is imperative to look at long-term solutions within the education process.
One such solution may be to focus on improved mathematics instruction as early as preprimary school. However, children at this young age are not typically suited to formal teaching. Alternative methods of mathematics instruction must be considered for maximum and effective impact. The study was conducted to test the notion that not all early methods of mathematics instruction are equal. During the empirical research approximately 200 preprimary school children in three different socio-economic environments (urban higher SES, township and rural) were tested after experiencing a teacher-guided play-based mathematics teaching intervention, or after experiencing
a worksheet-based or free-flow play-based curriculum. The test performance of the participants was primarily compared to find relations between teaching methods and early mathematics performance. The study found that a teacher-guided play-based curriculum is superior to other curriculums in the instruction of mathematics in all educational settings, regardless of socioeconomic background.
The purpose of this research was to determine whether learners in Grade R mastered the necessary math skills through structured play that could serve as a basis for further mathematics training. In the literature various math concepts were studied in depth. The main focus was on the transfer of math concepts to young learners. The literature study further focussed on the purpose, values, and types of play, development of play and play in the modern era.
An empirical study using random sampling was done using 103 Grade R learners from six different schools who were willing to participate in the study. The study was done using the positivism quantitative research methodology. Questionnaires were used to determine the mastery of mathematical skills by Grade R learners. Structured play was used as a tool to collect the research material. The results were obtained by processing the questionnaires statistically. Questionnaires were also completed by the teachers to confirm their background knowledge, teaching methods as well as to determine the teachers‟ own feelings towards and their knowledge of mathematics.
The research results confirm that the majority of Grade R learners have obtained a good math foundation. The study also confirmed that it is important that young children need to play to learn new skills and must have the opportunity to practise the new skills. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed.
