Waiting for power : affection, ethics and politics in the everyday life of popular Chile

Briceño, Pablo Agustin January 2018 (has links)
Based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in población ‘La Victoria’, a working-class neighbourhood in the city of Santiago, this research describes the everyday lives of its inhabitants (pobladores) in the context of contemporary neoliberal Chile. Although the pobladores’ movement had animated Chilean politics since the 1950s, also becoming the main actor in the struggle against the dictatorship, after the return to democracy in 1990 pobladores disappeared from the political arena. Most researchers have proposed that the political absence of pobladores must be understood as an effect of neoliberal modernization – a set of policies implemented during dictatorship and maintained by successive democratic governments after 1990. Their main argument is that a major cultural transformation in Chile has degraded social ties producing a consumeristic, individualistic and depoliticized society. Instead, I propose that pobladores from La Victoria have, despite the transformations, preserved a form of conviviality based on strong affective bonds with kin, friends and neighbours – alongside equally sentimental separations and divisions from others. I argue that, due to their pervasiveness and importance in pobladores’ lives, social relationships are the main agents in the articulation of pobladores’ ethical frameworks guiding their decisions and actions in life. Pobladores’ affective social relationships have allowed them not only to mitigate the side effects of the current neoliberal model, but also to accept, adapt and contest specific aspects of it. In this sense, life in the población has a heterogeneous grammar, a way in which social relations are articulated and disarticulated, activated and de-activated, connecting personal lives to collective processes. This grammar of strong affective ties, terrible betrayals and deep but changing separations and divisions is what I call the ‘politics of the everyday life’. This politics of everyday life lies behind apparently very different historical processes, such as the pobladores’ struggle against dictatorship in the 1980s and their post-1990 absence from the political arena. I contend that what characterizes the current context is not a lack of politics or a ‘depoliticization’ but a particular way in which certain pobladores, known as ‘políticos’ – those interested in collective action in order to produce change in the world – are articulated with or disarticulated from other pobladores in the politics of everyday life in the población.

This thesis discuss the relationship and mutual interpolations between women's movements, feminist movements and women of popular class in the light of sociology of social movements and feminist theory. Enunciate the problem contextualizing it within the political field of social movements, set in cycles of mobilization and organizational processes in the period of military dictatorship in Brazil, to the present day, and its fraying in the institutional crisis of 2015/2016. Discuss the process of alignment of the framework of the feminist movement and the changes in the class profile of the women who make it up. Analyze, especially the construction of interpretive frameworks reference Articulation of Brazilian Women(Articulação de Mulheres Brasileiras – AMB), national movimentalist joint, anti systemic feminist character mostly composed of black women and popular classes. Finally, we discuss the process of building feminist political identity of popular class women participants of this joint and interpellations they present. I consider that the Brazilian feminist movement today is very different from the initial period in the 1970s, given the diversity of their joints, their political agendas and their composition and that the AMBwas established as a feminist articulation of popular character as its political project and its internal composition.

From slums to cités : the three stages of pro-immigrant struggles, a social history of Nanterre (1957-2011)

Collet, Victor 06 December 2013 (has links)
End of the 50's. Nanterre, communist stronghold and immigration land. Land of struggles. The politicized workers and communist activists encounter the Algerian conflict and the slums where thousands of migrants from Algeria, Morocco and Portugal are living. In response to the marginalization of these "Nanterriens" from abroad and the special status imposed upon them, a cause des étrangers emerges. This dissertation explores the various "stages" of that cause, linking them to the handling of the issue by the municipal authorities. Social history and the long term collective action review those often forgotten struggles of the immigration, from the slums to the involvement in today's cités, and question the relationship between the political domain and the social movement. Sociohistory shifts the focus to the gap between past and present, from the pioneering assessment of problems by christian activists, through the post-68 leftist radicalization of the cause of migrant workers, to the present day fragmentation into specific engagements: in the socio-cultural field, at the cité level, promoting a positive memory of immigration or diversité in politics, in support of the étrangers or their country of origin. It highlights a major change in the activist arena: the unradicalization and the growth of grassroots initiatives, which echo at the beginning of the 80's the de-coupling of support to the immigrés (already settled) and defence of the étrangers (newly arrived). This is also the time when the children of immigrés take things in their own hands to put an end to the last remnants of the "French ghetto" where they have been relegated: the cités de transit.

TV OVO: a representação de identidades juvenis no audiovisual / TV OVO: representation of youth identities on digital video

Missau, Lucas Durr 13 March 2012 (has links)
The present work has as its theme the representation of youth identities in videos produced by low income youth. Thus, we study the construction of identities through the consumption of material and symbolic goods during the production of audiovisual works made by young people from working class, in workshops about techniques of video production, given by TV OVO, Santa Maria-RS. The main objective is to investigate the representation of material and symbolic goods during the production of videos made by young people in the workshops. To understand how these representations of youth identities are created, the research consisted of an ethnographic study conducted during the daily routine of audiovisual productions promoted by TV OVO and a descriptive analysis of the videos produced for the project TV OVO No Ônibus, witch was initiated in 2001, and requires a daily work of the young filmmakers. The episodes of the program are shown on televisions arranged in urban bus and presents as its segments: Espelho, with journalistic reports; Profissão, with a depoiment of a professional about the activities developed; Entre Tribus, that shows cultural activities developed by a group of the youth; Buzum is composed by videoclips of local musical groups; and No Ponto, that consists in make questions for the people at the bus stops. As results, we noticed the eminence of the ownership and use of the media products on the daily routine of the interviewed. From the description of the younger s routine, we perceive that most of the time the respondents are consuming and working in the realization of media products. They spend less time with their families or at the school, in virtue of professional activities at TV OVO and watching television shows, films, sitcoms and other products. Beyond that, we perceive that issues such as profession and education guide their activities. Both issues raised the enthusiasm of the young respondents when related to practices of audiovisual. Then, the identities are constructed through media products that are consumed by the young interviewed. Thus, we characterized the identities as hybrid and multiple, formed through the processes of deterritorialization, reterritorialization, continuity, rupture, and negotiation.

DA FELICIDADE À ALEGRIA: OS USOS E AS APROPRIAÇÕES DO TELEJORNAL JORNAL NACIONAL POR FAMÍLIAS DE CLASSE POPULAR / FROM FELICITY TO JOY: THE USES AND APPROPRIATIONS OF JORNAL NACIONAL NEWS BY POPULAR CLASS FAMILIES

Cechella, Tissiana Nogueira Pereira 07 April 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This is a study of news reception carried out with three popular class families, which live in the Renascença Village, located at the West region of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul. The purpose of this research is to reflect about the uses and appropriations that these families do about the Jornal Nacional of Rede Globo de Televisão based on the communicative mediations of culture: sociability and rituality. For this, the theoretical axis of the research is Latin American Cultural Studies, mainly the Mediations Theory of Martín-Barbero (1987) and the social class concept of Pierre Boudieu (2006). The methodology of this study is a critical ethnography of reception, which was proposed by Ronsini (2010, p. 2). The results show that the uses and appropriations of news by the families are essentially determined by the social class which they belong as well as by their cultural, economic and social capitals. Furthermore, it is permeate by questions related with generation, because the news is important for the adults, which watch and appropriating of the messages daily, unlike the young that watch the news with low frequency and are interested in few reports of the news. The uses and appropriations also are related to gender, because, many times, is different for the men and women, beyond the domestic space and temporal configuration, which is mobilized in full during the television program exhibition. The mediations sociability and rituality are fundamental for the comprehension of the uses and appropriations of news because focus significantly on their configuration. The three investigated families elaborate their popular class representations based on their experience and their everyday, but also based on news, although they affirm that are not totally represented by the television program. The cultural capital of the three families is elaborated, primarily, by the media, mostly based on television (news and soap opera).

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ADOLESCENT SIBLINGS: SENSES AND MEANINGS

Carvalho, Raquel Maracaípe de 16 June 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-27T14:18:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Raquel Maracaipe de Carvalho.pdf: 15547046 bytes, checksum: ecfd8589639799fb2e41ab364b3d48a2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-06-16 / This study aimed to apprehend the senses and meanings that adolescent siblings of popular classes attribute to the relationship that is established between them. In this study, we adopt the concept of adolescence as a socially and historically constructed phenomenon, which is not interpreted as a natural phase of human development. The present research is qualitative and based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Vigotski s social-historical psychology, focusing on the historical and dialectical materialism perspective. The participants were five pairs of adolescent siblings from 12 to 18 years old, enrolled in Escola de Circo, one of the extension programs of the Instituto Dom Fernando (IDF) at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás (PUC-Goiás), in Goiânia (GO). The ten participants were interviewed individually and, at the end of the interviews, each of them produced a drawing expressing their relationship with the sibling. After that, they participated in two focal groups (FG), for which they were separated and each member of the sibling dyads took part in a different group: FG1 and FG2. According to the core meanings of the participants, it was possible to apprehend the senses and meanings that each adolescent attributed to himself, the sibling, and the family. In this study, the following main thesis was pursued: the senses and meanings attributed by the participant adolescents to their relationship with the sibling are marked by affective relationships, which are conflicts and friendship. From this principal thesis, others were also pursued, such as: lack of parental authority (and the affective fragility of families) gives way to situations involving violence and authoritarianism between siblings; violence and rivalry within the family are dialectically constituent and constituted based on violence within society; family is the legitimate place for children education/upbringing. Overall, this study evidenced that the adolescents have a naturalized concept of adolescence. We conclude that the physical or verbal violence between adolescent siblings was triggered by the uneven and asymmetrical relationship between them. Friendship between adolescent siblings is an important aspect of their relationship, and although conflicts are also present, this relationship may be very gratifying and enriching for both. Family, the complex combination of the relationships of its members, constituted the space for the antagonism experienced by adolescent siblings, as well as by all its members.

Ferreira, Eloisa Tavares 24 March 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T16:33:38Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Eloisa Tavares Ferreira.pdf: 542765 bytes, checksum: 5ca6f2686e1a907b93c9e0e369f2478b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-03-24 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This dissertation is the result of research done in 2007, which aimed to analyze the origin and conditions of the school and social trajectories of students from families belonging to a certain fraction of popular classes who take specific strategies, common in middle classes, targeting the continuity of studies of their children at the top level or better placement in the job market. The interest in the subject is related to personal experience as a high school teacher at a private school located on the outskirts of the city of Fortaleza, concerned about the paths followed by these students. The universe of work was made of former high school students from a private educational institution, located in peripheral district of the city of Fortaleza. We selected 06 students who completed this level of education in 2004, which were conducted semi-structured interviews, which were ultimately to collect data about the origin of family settings, social relationships built, as well as their school trajectories, trying to raise the most significant factors that led each of these students to take similar trajectories. To proceed to the analysis of data we looked for support in the concept of cultural capital and social capital of Bourdieu, as well as the methodological contributions of Lahire (1997), in that we have proposed to understand the singular trajectory followed by every individual who were instrumental or not for the continuation of studies at college or for insertion in the labor market / A presente dissertação é resultado de pesquisa realizada em 2007, que visou analisar as condições de origem e as trajetórias escolares e sociais de alunos de famílias pertencentes a uma determinada fração da classe popular que adotam estratégias específicas, comuns nas classes médias, visando à continuidade dos estudos de seus filhos em nível superior ou uma melhor colocação no mercado de trabalho.

Recherche identitaire et mémoire collective dans l'oeuvre d'Annie Ernaux / Search for identity and collective memory in the work of Annie Ernaux

El sakezli, Oreida 16 December 2013 (has links)
Elle interroge la maternité, la sexualité, la parentalité, le rapport homme I femme d’une écriture simple, claire, filtrée des émotions et dénué de tout effet qui l’écarterait de sa quête, interrogeant ainsi en filigrane la fonction du roman / Searching for identity and collective memory in the works of Annie ُErnaux. This research aims to study Annie´s work on women and their multiple voices, Annie Ernaux is a famous writer who has enriched her novels through her own life experiences. A big figure in autobiography writing, Annie Ernaux has a unique style of writing. She addressed her history, her roots, and the social cultural context in which she grew up. She especially interrogates the feminine figure. Her works are both literary accounts and sociological documents of a life rooted in another centuries values and standards. She recalls the essential role of women in the family and in the city, questioning motherhood, sexuality, parenting, and the relationship between man and woman. She crafts her work in a simple and clear manner with pure emotion devoid of any effect that would divert from her true goal . Thus implicitly questioning the function of the novel

Violences et socialisations : les formes de sociabilité des "jeunes du quartier" / Violences and socializations : forms of sociability among “the youth of the projects"

Aigon, Elian 20 September 2010 (has links)
This research analyses the different forms of sociability among the youth from popular social class into different scopes of socialization (e.g. family, school, labour). Although not always unveiled, violence – symbolical and sometimes physical – is present in these main institutions defined as fields of socialization. This research is centred on the analysis of thesocial organization modes created by youth in reaction to a triple disqualification mainly: family, educational and professional. This undergoing structural violence – made of numerous dominations, rejections, humiliations, exclusions and discriminations – is decisive in the context of massive unemployment, precariousness and disaffiliation. This situation is characterized by the development of an increasingly stressful process of enclosure and social/spatial segregation. This process, incessantly revealed by mass rebellion formed over three decades, does not find a genuine political opening.Facing this structural chaos, the youth of these projects built themselves – generation after generation – a real and virtual world, coming from the slums and the street. This world is then functioning as a scope of socialization with its language, culture, solidarities, hierarchy, competition and undergoing violence.
