Popup Height and the Dynamics of Rising Buoyant SpheresMunns, Randy H. 11 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper the popup height of rising buoyant spheres is studied over a range of distinct release depths along with the accompanying velocities and accelerations near the free surface. In the past, regimes of motion due to vortex induced vibrations have been classified based on trajectories below the free surface. This study focuses on the popup height, velocity and acceleration at free surface exit, and vortex shedding in order to further define regimes of motion experienced by a rising buoyant sphere. Varying the release depth below the free surface reveals varying exit angles, velocities, accelerations, and popup heights at surface exit. Vortex shedding prior to free surface exit causes decelerations contributing to the variation in exit velocities and resulting popup heights. Using high-speed imaging and particle image velocimetry, we examine the trajectories, accelerations, velocities and vortex shedding events for spheres of different mass ratios over a range of Reynolds number (2e4 >Re> 6e5). At lower Re, spheres released from shallow release depths result in greater accelerations and velocities at free surface exit along with greater popup heights compared to releases from deeper depths. After reaching a depth which results in a minimum popup height, further increasing the release depth reveals an increase in popup height demonstrating an oscillatory pattern due to the sphere being released from vortex forces after shedding. This pattern is repeated as the popup height again decreases with greater release depths. For spheres of greater Re, popup height increases linearly with release depth, demonstrating continued accelerations at free surface exit.

Vilka är handelsfastighetsägares incitament att erbjuda korttidskontrakt? Hur ser framtiden ut, fyller denna typ av kontrakt ett behov? Studien är baserad på empirisk materialinsamling som kopplas samman med tidigare forskning inom ämnet Popup, kontraktsteori och shoppinggallerior inom fastighetsbranschen. Författaren har samlat in data genom en kombination av litteraturstudier och intervjuer. Den teoretiska referensramen behandlar frågor kring kontraktsteori samt hur skillnader mellan nyckelkunder och icke-nyckelkunder avspeglas i kontraktsvillkor och hyresgästmix. Popup-konceptet och dess potential behandlas utgående från tidigare forskning inom marknadsföring och image. Slutligen behandlas kort e-handelns påverkan på handeln och dess förväntade effekt på fastighetsbranschen. / The purpose of this study is to investigate the commercial property owner´s attitude to and experiences of the Popup-concept and short-term contracts. What are the commercial property owner´s incentives to offer short-term contracts? Will this type of contract fill a need in the future? The current study is based on empirical data collection linked together with previous research in areas like Popup concept, contract theory and shopping malls. The author has collected data through a combination of literature studies and interviews.The theoretical frame deals with issues of contract theory and how the difference between anchor and non-anchor tenants is reflected in the contract terms and in the tenant mix. The popup-concept and its potential is presented based on previous research in the area of marketing and image. The theoretical frame contains a short presentation about e-commerce impact on trade and retail and its expected impact on the real estate industry.

This dissertation responds to the problem that intervention on historical architecture generally represents a loss of value to the existing building and new programme. It investigates the relationship between the alteration of historical architecture and the introduction of new intervention which reflects current users, time and programme through cultural production. Historical architecture is static and rejects the notion of change. Interior design opts to alter the existing to ensure new inhabitation in changing times. Cultural production is the process by which products are designed to relate intrinsically to their user group culture and identity. The study links all three factors through the design of the People’s Upliftment Programme skills training centre in Salvokop (2011 POPUP), in a building which was constructed in 1909 as the chief engineer’s office (1909 CEO) for Pretoria’s railway line. An important element in retailing is the use of impulse purchases; generally small items that are bought by consumers on the spur of the moment. By some estimates, impulse purchases make up approximately 50 percent of all spending by consumers. While impulse purchases have been studied in the brick-and-mortar retail environment, they have not been researched in the online retail environment. With e-commerce growing rapidly and approaching $20 billion per year in the Canadian and US markets, this is an important unexplored area.
Using real purchasing behaviour from visitors to the Reunion website of Huntsville High School in Ontario Canada, I explored factors that influence the likelihood of an impulse purchase in an online retail environment. Consistent with diminishing sensitivity (mental accounting and the psychophysics of pricing), the results indicate that the likelihood of a consumer purchasing the impulse item increases with the total amount spent on other items. The results also show that presenting the offer in a popup is a more effective location and presentation mode than embedding the offer into the checkout page and increases the likelihood of the consumer making an impulse purchase. In addition, the results confirm that providing a reason to purchase by linking a $1 donation for a charity to the impulse item increases the frequency of the impulse purchase.

Nya casinon dyker upp allt oftare och spelberoende är ett återkommande ämne i nyheterna. Trots alla nya onlinecasinon finns det inga studier idag som undersöker hur den visuella aspekten av dessa onlinespel påverkar spelarna. Denna studie undersöker hur visuell återkoppling påverkar individernas spelande och risktagande när de spelar på onlinecasinon. För att studera dessa effekter genomfördes en studie på 45 studenter som delades in i två grupper. Båda grupperna blev ombedda att spela en prototyp av en enarmad bandit skapad för denna studie som heter "Casino Slotmachine". En grupp såg en vanlig grå pop-up ruta med resultat, medan den andra gruppen utsattes för animeringar i form av fallande konfetti när de vann och en mer estetiskt tilltalande popup-box i en ljusgul ton med resultat. Under spelet registrerades deltagarnas satsningar per runda, tid per runda samt antalet klick per runda. Varje deltagare spelade 20 rundor av spelet. Efter spelet svarade deltagarna på en enkät om deras spelupplevelse. Resultaten visar att deltagarna som fick visuell återkoppling tog större risker under sessionen än gruppen som inte fick visuell återkoppling. Visuell återkoppling kan därför vara en underliggande faktor till varför vissa spelare i onlinecasinon tar större risker idag. Undersökningen visar också på att de som fick visuell återkoppling blev mindre stressade av spelet än de som inte gjorde det. Både män och kvinnor påverkades på samma sätt av den visuella återkopplingen. / New casinos appear online constantly, and gambling addiction is a recurring subject in the news. Despite all the new online casinos, there are no studies today that investigate how the visual aspect of these online games affects the players. This study examines how visual feedback affects individuals' gambling and risk-taking when gambling on online casinos. To study these effects, a study was conducted on 45 students who were divided into two groups. Both groups were asked to play a prototype of a slot machine created for this study called "Casino Slotmachine". One group saw a regular gray pop-up box displaying net profit, while the other group was exposed to animations in the form of falling confetti when winning, and a more aesthetically pleasing pop-up box in a light yellow tone displaying net profit. During the game, the participants' bet per round, time per round and the amount of clicks per round was recorded. Each participant played 20 rounds of the game. After playing, the participants responded to a survey about their gaming experience. The results show that the participants who received visual feedback took more risks during the session than the group that did not receive visual feedback. Visual feedback can therefore be an underlying factor to why some players in online casinos are taking greater risks today. The survey also shows that those who received visual feedback became less stressed by the game than those who did not. Both men and women were similarly affected by the visual feedback.

Achieving Complex Motion with Fundamental Components for Lamina Emergent MechanismsWinder, Brian Geoffrey 01 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Designing mechanical products in a competitive environment can present unique challenges, and designers constantly search for innovative ways to increase efficiency. One way to save space and reduce cost is to use ortho-planar compliant mechanisms which can be made from sheets of material, or lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs). This thesis presents principles which can be used for designing LEMs. Pop-up paper mechanisms use topologies similar to LEMs, so it is advantageous to study their kinematics. This thesis outlines the use of planar and spherical kinematics to model commonly used pop-up paper mechanisms. A survey of common joint types is given, as well as an overview of common monolithic and layered mechanisms. In addition, it is shown that more complex mechanisms may be created by combining simple mechanisms in various ways. The principles presented are applied to the creation of new pop-up joints and mechanisms, which also may be used for lamina emergent mechanisms. Models of the paper mechanisms presented in Chapter 2 of the thesis are found in the appendix, and the reader is encouraged to print, cut out and assemble them. One challenge associated with spherical and spatial LEM design is creating joints with the desired motion characteristics, especially where complex spatial mechanism topologies are required. Hence, in addition to a study of paper mechanisms, some important considerations for designing joints for LEMs are presented. A technique commonly used in robotics, using serial chains of revolute and prismatic joints to approximate the motion of complex joints, is presented for use in LEMs. Important considerations such as linkage configuration and mechanism prototyping are also discussed. Another challenge in designing LEMs is creating multi-stable mechanisms with the ability to have coplanar links. A method is presented for offsetting the joint axes of a spatial compliant mechanism to introduce multi-stability. A new bistable spatial compliant linkage that uses that technique is introduced. In the interest of facilitating LEM design, the final chapter of this thesis presents a preliminary design method. While similar to traditional methods, this method includes considerations for translating the mechanism topology into a suitable configuration for use with planar layers of material.
