Bodies of Light: Affect and the Filmic Gaze in Horacio Quiroga's Cinema StoriesStewart, Morgan Keith 01 June 2017 (has links)
Though Horacio Quiroga is better known for his jungle tales, he was also a prolific film critic. Writing in the early days of silent cinema, Quiroga channeled his love for the new art into a series of four short stories about film: "Miss Dorothy Phillips, mi esposa" (1919), "El espectro" (1921), "El puritano" (1926), and "El vampiro" (1927). These stories not only reveal Quiroga's passion for the cinema, but also showcase the power of film to affect the spectator. The theoretical basis of my study comes from the Deleuzian concept of affect, being defined as the invisible force or intensity which exists in bodies and can also be transmitted between bodies that have differing capacities for acting on each other. In the case of the cinema, the film and the spectator are the two bodies that participate in this transmission of intensities. In the first chapter, I discuss how "El puritano" reveals that film's resurrected images can be more powerful than the originals. Then, I analyze "El espectro," which serves as an example of how film's mimetic qualities increase its power to affect spectators and produce in them visceral reactions. Particularly striking in this story is the filmic gaze of an on-screen actor, a gaze which transmits affect to the other characters. In the second chapter, I analyze "Miss Dorothy Phillips, mi esposa," particularly how it theorizes the erotic gaze of filmed actresses. Then I discuss "El vampiro," in which I study the relationship of two men with the filmed image of a beautiful Hollywood actress. In the story, an inventor is able to "move" film in such a way as to create a spectral woman who can interact with others. However, by the end of the story it becomes clear that it is the film—personified by this spectral woman—that holds the true power in this relationship of bodies.

Translating Andrew Kaufman's 'Signs of the Cross' (Back) into SpanishVentura Fernandez, Berenice 01 December 2015 (has links)

Abstract: Throughout the fifteenth century, among curious and conquerors related to Portugal, there were a significant number of littered people, who were interested about things of Africa. The reports of these journeys, written primarily for the purpose of bringing information to the Christian kings, had become a way of translating new worlds, sometimes emphasizing strangeness, sometimes shedding light on traits that they considered common, or rather, on what in Africans did not properly distinguish them of the peoples of the Christian kingdoms. In view of this, the purpose of the present research is to examine in these writings not only what caused astonishment, but the parameters of what, when travel became more frequent, repeated and time consuming, came to be understood and judged common or familiar. In short, values and habits recognized as shared between the two continents, Europe and Africa, will be questioned and confronted. With an emphasis on travelers' mentions of life's tiniest practices - eating, living, dressing, and expressing feelings - the research examines the pages of stories devoted to meeting those people who, noted at first for their differences, were not then so strange to Christians. / Mestre

[en] WHAT MAKES OBJECT RELATIVE CLAUSE AND OBJECT WH-QUESTIONS DIFFICULT FOR CHILDREN TO PROCESS?: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY FOCUSING ON SLI (SPECIFIC LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENT) / [pt] O QUE TORNA ORAÇÕES RELATIVAS E INTERROGATIVAS DE OBJETO DE DIFÍCIL PROCESSAMENTO PARA CRIANÇAS?: UM ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL COM FOCO NO DEL (DÉFICIT ESPECÍFICO DA LINGUAGEM)VANESSA GOUVEIA RIBEIRO 08 November 2012 (has links)
[en] The comprehension of object relative clauses and objects WH-questions in Brazilian Portuguese is investigated. Being the processing of these sentences highly costly, it causes comprehension difficulties, especially for SLI children. Processing cost is characterized on the basis of an integrated model of on-line linguistic computation, incorporating minimalist assumptions. The working hypothesis is that the processing cost of such structures can be differentiated as a function of the type of features of the elements involved in the syntactic computation, and the possibility of the immediate mapping of DPs onto background information. An element of the same kind of the moved constituent, when situated between the canonical and the final position of the latter, would lead to high processing cost, in the light of the Extended Relativized Minimality Principle. It was then predicted that the presence of an intervening pronominal DP would facilitate comprehension. Moreover, the possibility was considered of an intervening element to allow the anticipation of a verb/object relation before the object position was found and the antecedent reactivated, thereby facilitating processing. 71 children (aged 7–10) were tested by means of MABILIN. An experiment aiming at verifying those predictions was conducted with 20 children identified as language impaired and 20 typically developing children. A significant improvement in performance could be attested when the intervening element was a pronominal DP, particularly in the SLI group, and when integration with background information was possible. Reading material to children with language difficulties is presented, which is based on these results.

The Impact of Contemporary Tourism Development on Colonial Built Heritage: Case Study of the Portuguese Legacy in Macau, ChinaChaplin, Robert Ian Chaplin, ianchaplin@gmail.com January 2007 (has links)
The hypothesis put forward in this thesis is that tourism can be the agent for the sustainable conservation and development of the valuable legacy of colonial built heritage by capitalizing on its tangible and intangible assets. The key variable is the recognition of the intrinsic value of both iconic and non-iconic properties and sites that constitute the extrinsic value of the cultural attractions of the tourism destination. The research problem is concerned with assessing the impact of contemporary tourism development on these attractions and identifying the issues affecting preservation and realization of asset potential. The research aims to support the collaboration between tourism professionals and cultural heritage stakeholders committed to resolving issues and problems for the destination identified within the stages of the tourism destination's life cycle of evolution (Butler, 1980).

A discourse analysis of code-switching practices among Angolan migrants in Cape Town, South AfricaDinis Fernando da Costa. January 2010 (has links)
<p>In this thesis, I explore the code-switching practices of long-term Angolans migrants in Cape Town when they interact with those who have been here for a much shorter period. In my Honours research essay, I revealed a tendency among those who have lived in Cape Town for some time to code-switch from Portuguese to English even in the presence of more recent migrants from Angola, who have little or no mastery of English. This thesis thus considers the effects of space, discourses of power, language ideologies and attitudes on the patterns of inter- and intra-sentential code-switching by these long-term migrants in interaction with each other as well as with the more recent &ldquo / Angolan arrivals&rdquo / in Cape Town. Twenty Angolan migrants participated in this study. Of these, ten were long-term migrants to South Africa, while a further ten were relative newcomers. While the long-term migrants could claim to be bilingual in Portuguese and English, the newcomers were largely limited to a few English words in their repertoire. However, both groups could speak one or more of the indigenous languages of Angola, like Kimbundu, Umbundu, Kikongo and even Lingala (which is an indigenous language from Republic Democratic of Congo). Some of the long-term migrants had even acquired South African indigenous language such as isiXhosa and Afrikaans. The study made use of qualitative ethnographic methodologies to collect the data. These included recorded conversations, individual and focus group interviews, both general observation and participant observation.</p>

#Yo Soy 132 and Occupy: Social Movements and the MediaCrumpacker, Elizabeth A 01 April 2013 (has links)
I am comparing the tactics of Mexican youth movement #Yo Soy 132 and Occupy to better understand how these groups work against the hegemonic views presented by mass media. I aim to understand the media structures in Mexico and the United States through the lens of these social groups and consider how they are similar or different. I also take into consideration societal structures, such as varying levels of Internet access, that influence the way these groups function. These movements are in constant flux and their interaction with the public is changing everyday, but I hope to provide some insight into their tactics and strategies and whether or not they are successful in achieving their established goals.
