It also draws parallels between the struggle for female liberation within Zapatismo and the struggles of working-class, women of color movements in the United States. Chapters are focused on topics including women's involvement in the San Andrés Accords, the Women's Revolutionary Law, the Other Campaign and Marichuy's electoral campaign as well as personal observations from time spent in Oventik, a Zapatista caracol. Qui sont les locuteurs de l’arabe maghrébin (dans ses diverses variétés) en France et quelles sont leurs pratiques langagières ? Étudier ces pratiques suppose que l’on s’intéresse aux phénomènes migratoires liés à la (post)colonisation du Nord de l’Afrique. Cette prise en compte, dans une étude sociolinguistique, de la diversité des profils, liée à l’histoire, sous l’angle séculier de pratiques potentielles de l’arabe maghrébin constitue une approche inédite.Ce travail réunit des personnes ayant un lien familial avec le Maroc, l’Algérie ou la Tunisie, de traditions musulmanes, juives et chrétiennes, et, parmi les personnes originaires d’Algérie, des harkis et des pieds-noirs, et/ou leurs descendants nés et/ou socialisés en France. La première partie s’intéresse au concept d’ethnicité et montre que les termes « assimilation/intégration » fonctionnent sur un mode injonctif et ne constituent plus des outils théoriques pertinents. Enfin, sont examinées les catégorisations ayant trait aux populations considérées.La seconde partie examine le processus de transmission, les représentations et pratiques langagières déclarées, en s’appuyant sur les entretiens recueillis. Concernant la transmission, le modèle dominant qui présuppose une perte de la langue familiale sur trois générations conduit à masquer ou à schématiser un processus autrement plus complexe. Cette thèse met en évidence qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un processus linéaire, tant dans la (re)définition proposée qu’à travers les entretiens et les parcours. Enfin, la troisième partie s’intéresse aux pratiques langagières effectives et propose des pistes d’analyse autour des questions de variation, de koinéisation et d’accommodation. / Who are the speakers of North African Arabic (in all its varieties) speakers in France and what are their linguistic practices ? To study those practices means taking an interest in migrations phenomena linked to the (post)colonisation of North Africa. Taking into account those diverse profiles, inherited from history, from the secular angle of North African Arabic practices constitutes a new sociolinguistic approach.This work gathers people who have a family connection with Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia, who are from Muslim, Jewish or Christian traditions; for those who are from Algeria, it gathers also « harkis » and « pied-noirs » and/or their descendants, born and/or socialised in France.The first part looks over the ethnicity concept and shows that the terms “assimilation/integration” operate more like injunctions than like relevant theoretical tools. Categorisations related to the people studied here are also investigated.The second part analyses transmission, linguistic representations and practices as declared by the interviewees. About the transmission, the main theoretical model presumes that the family language is due to disappear after three generations, which contributes to hide or reduce a much more complex process. The present thesis proves that it is not a linear process, based on the (re)definition proposed as well as through the interviews and the interviewees’ parcours.Eventually, the third part deals with real linguistic practices of North African Arabic and proposes possible reflections about questions of linguistic variation, koineisation and accommodation.

Blancura Situacional e Imperio Español en su Historia, Cine y Literatura (s.XIX-XX)Perez Sanchez, Jose Maria 01 January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation studies identity formation and race informed by the discipline Whiteness Studies. As such this dissertation conceptualizes Spanish Whiteness historically and analyzes its representation in Spanish narrative in prose and film. This research responds to two questions: 1) How has Spanish culture historically instrumentalized Blackness thus contributing to the creation of the Western’s conceptualization of Whiteness? 2) What does Spanish representation of Empire say about its Whiteness? In an effort to answer these questions, this study is divided into two parts that correspond to the conceptualization and representation of what are termed ‘Situational Whiteness’ and ‘Imperial Spanish Orientalism.’ I argue that both are the result of a Spanish differential exceptionalism based on Orientalist cultural practices of tactical assimilation, by means of which the Black experience is subsumed on the margins as a part of Spanish Whiteness.
To prove this hypothesis, Spanish Whiteness is conceptualized for the purpose of exploring the strategies of tactical assimilation of the Spanish Orientalism (Hispanism, Arabism, Africanism, Hispanotropicalism) towards its former colonies in Latin America and Africa. In addition, the contrasting cases of instrumentalization of Blackness as resistance in José Martí and Fernando Ortiz’s notion of Cuban racial ‘counterpoint’ as well as and the racial ‘particularism’ of Joan Maragall and Blas Infante inform cultural notions of Spanish Whiteness as well as its fragmentation. In the second part of this dissertation, the analysis focuses on understudied cases of the Spanish Imperial Whiteness’s representation in relation to Equatorial Guinean and Afro-Cuban Blackness.
The overall propose of this research is, on the one hand, to explain how the situational nature of Spanish Whiteness is present throughout foundational moments in diverse forms of Spanish Orientalism; and, on the other hand, to inform Whiteness Studies from a different cultural angle thus providing the discipline with a transnational bridge towards a better understanding of white processes of racial formation, historical strategies and cultural forms of structural domination.

In spite of its common designation as an outmoded classic of sentimental middlebrow literature, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath remains relevant as a milestone in an extended liminal stage between the failing cultural myths of the past and the founding of newly relevant shared stories. This stage begins with the Enlightenment and continues to present-day conflicts over identity, labor, migrants, notions of truth itself, the function and responsibilities of government, and our shared ecological destiny. Arriving near the end of the Depression and its concurrent economic and environmental disasters, The Grapes of Wrath reflects a particularly chaotic stage in mythological disintegration and regeneration. While critics routinely note the structure of myths within the narrative, they too often fail to note the ways said structures fail, providing for the oppressive tone of the narrative, which ironically leaves space for the rise of new myths.

La réflexion sur le cycle de nouvelles, considéré comme un genre en tant que tel, donnera la priorité à l’analyse de l’oeuvre d’Alice Munro placée dans une perspective comparative, en relation et en continuité, non seulement avec le travail d’écrivains canadiens "maîtres" du genre, mais aussi avec la tradition du cycle de nouvelles américaine. / My research aims at studying the Nord-American short story in relation to a form to which it is inextricably linked, the short story cycle, which, halfway between history and novel, is set as a series of interconnected stories presenting some recurring elements (characters, place, themes). The reflection on the short story cycle will give priority to the analysis of Alice Munro's work placed in a comparative perspective, in relation and continuity, not only with the work of 'Canadian writers' masters' of the genre, but also with the tradition of the American short story cycle. / Il presente lavoro si propone di analizzare la forma narrativa del ciclo di racconti, mettendone in luce le caratteristiche in relazione all’opera di Alice Munro. Il corpus narrativo di Munro, formato da quattordici raccolte in un arco temporale che copre più di quarant’anni (la prima raccolta, Dance of the Happy Shades esce ne 1968 e l’ultima, Dear Life nel 2012), ben si presta a questo tipo di studio. Nell’ arco della sua prolifica opera Munro ha esplorato le potenzialità della forma breve, rimodulando progressivamente i confini fra i generi, scomponendone le prospettive e gli esiti possibili ora nella direzione della novella modernista (cara a scrittrici come Katherine Mansfield ed Eudora Welty), ora nella creazione di cicli di storie o di serie di racconti interconnessi, destrutturando o risemantizzando la nozione di brevità e di genere letterario. "Let the Castillo be his Monument!": Imperialism, Nationalism, and Indian Commemoration at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, FloridaBarnewolt, Claire M 01 January 2018 (has links)
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest stone fortification on the North American mainland, a unique site that integrates Florida’s Spanish colonial past with American Indian narratives. A complete history of this fortification from its origins to its management under the National Park Service has not yet been written. During the Spanish colonial era, the Indian mission system complemented the defensive work of the fort until imperial skirmishes led to the demise of the Florida Indian. During the nineteenth century, Indian prisoners put a new American Empire on display while the fort transformed into a tourist destination. The Castillo became an American site, and eventually a National Monument, where visitors lionized Spanish explorers and often overlooked other players in fort history. This thesis looks at the threads of Spanish and Indian history at the fort and how they have or have not been interpreted into the twenty-first century.

Diversity and Democracy at War: Analyzing Race and Ethnicity in Squad Films from 1940-1960Jacobson, Lara K 03 May 2019 (has links)
Both the Second World War and the Korean War presented Hollywood with the opportunity to produce combat films that roused patriotic spirit amongst the American people. The obvious choice was to continue making the popular squad films that portrayed a group of soldiers working together to overcome a common challenge posed by the war. However, in the wake of various racial and ethnic tensions consistently unfolding in the United States from 1940 to 1960, it became apparent to Hollywood that the nation needed pictures of unity more than ever, especially if America was going to win its wars. Using combat as the backdrop, squad films consisting of men from all different backgrounds were created in order to demonstrate to its audiences how vital group cohesion was for the survival of the nation, both at home and abroad. This thesis explores how Hollywood’s war films incorporated racial and ethnic minorities into their classic American squads while also instilling the country’s inherent values of democracy.

Obesity and Workplace Injury in Hazardous Occupations Among the Hispanic/Latino PopulationKlyde, Barbara 01 January 2015 (has links)
Over the past 20 years, adult obesity has increased in the United States, especially among the Hispanic/Latino population. In 2010, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Environmental and Safety News, reported that younger workers, ages 18 to19 years of age, worked in the most high-risk occupations such as agriculture, construction, fishing, and manufacturing. The reported fatality rates for these occupations were 5.6 times greater for Hispanic workers compared to other race/ethnicity groups reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2013. This study determined whether obesity contributed to workplace injury or mortality in hazardous occupations, using federal, state, and independent national databases. The independent variable was obesity, the dependent variable was injury in hazardous occupations. In addition, age, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic level, educational level, and cultural context were used as mediating variables. The target population included all workers ages 18 to 65 years of age in hazardous occupations. Analysis of databases from NHANES, BRFSS, NIOSH, OSHA, and the BLS was conducted using descriptive statistics for frequency of the mediating variables' relationship to workplace injury. This study highlighted the prevalence of obesity in the Hispanic/Latino population and increased incidence of workplace injury in hazardous occupations, but found no significant relationship between the variables using the BFRSS Web Enabled Analysis Tool for linear regression and cross-tabulation. Establishing a relationship between obesity and increased injury for the Hispanic/Latino population in high-risk occupations for preventative measures will enhance positive social change within this underrepresented population in research.
