Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas e Confissões do Impostor Felix Krull: autobiografias ficcionais sobre o fracasso da vida burguesa / Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Confessions of Felix Krull Phoney: autobiographies fictional on the failure of bourgeois lifeErica de Cassia Modesto Coutrim 09 December 2008 (has links)
The following degree thesis consists in comparing the novels Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas and Confissões do impostor Felix Krull. We attempted to analyse the aspects, which approach them, despite of the temporal and cultural distance between them, initiating from the elements, which imitate the autobiographical text and its respective implications. The lives represented in both novels diverge from what usually can be understood as a normal biography. In a similar way the autobiographical function assumed by Felix and Brás diverges from the ideal standard of the confession and the autobiographical memory. The reliability of the narrators can be also questioned if we considerate their singular conditions as narrators: one, as impostor, the other, as a dead person. This thesis is composed of six parts, in that we will discuss the following aspects: an introduction to the comparative analysis, the novels and their narrators, the intertextuality introduced in the form and in the subject, Brás and Felix life events, their condition as autobiographers and the readers role. Like the novels in general, Memórias póstumas e Confissões, that simulate the autobiographical narrative, attend to the role of the attendance. In both analised books this concern is reflected on the the readers inserted in the narratives. This dissertation handles this aspect lastly, trying to analyse the Felix and Brás metanarrative considerations according to their respective readers in the horizon of the fictional autobiography.

Genom måleri kommer ansikten av de döda att leva kvar för evigt : Minnesbilder över kvinnor i Tornabuonifamiljen 1477-1497Blomström, André January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of posthumous portraits in the Tornabuoni family as a tool of positioning itself through visual rhetorics. The basis for the examination is three portraits of Francesca Pitti, Giovanna degli Albizzi and Lucrezia Tornabuoni, together with an altarpiece depicting the Visitation with Mary Jachobi and Mary Salome. The study uses iconography to analyse the images and using a rhetorical analysis to understand the visual rhetorics used by the family. The study finds that there are different hidden meanings in the portraits, Francesca is remembered by her husband by pure grief; Lucrezia is honoured as the bridge between the Tornabuoni and the Medici families, and Giovanna is remembered by her husband as the continuation of the dynasty in its time of crisis, as well as the pure loss and grief of his beloved wife and unborn child inside the walls of the palazzo. This study uses the theoretical framework of visual rhetorics, as developed by the historian Paul Zanker and adopted by art historian Johan Eriksson, to analyse the behaviour of commissioning posthumous portraits of deceased women and viewing them both in public and private spaces in churches and in the palazzo. As Alberti says: ''Through painting, the faces of the dead go on living for a very long time.''

Posmrtný život dat: analýza vývoje přístupu sociálních sítí k posmrtným datům uživatelů / Afterlife of digital user data: analysis of evolution of posthumous data policies on social mediaFléglová, Radka January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the topic of posthumous user data management concerning social media platforms. This topic is rarely discussed from the viewpoint of new media studies in academic literature. My thesis endeavours to unveil, contextualize, and critically assess the development of the posthumous data policies in order to uncover the level of control users and survivors have over the deceased users' data. Thus, three case studies of chronological posthumous policy development of major social media (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) were conducted and results were compared. The analysis has shown that platforms are rather reluctant to change their posthumous policies. One of the primary triggers for change comes from the users' feedback. Across all three cases every platform provided limited or no information about these policies in their terms of use or privacy policies. The case studies demonstrated that users have very limited choices regarding their data after death directly on the examined social media platforms. Individuals who were close to the deceased account users have the ability to request account deletion or have limited access to the account granted by the platform. The level of data preservation demanded by platforms seems dependent on a given social media's communication specificity...

Early modern literary afterlivesChaghafi, Elisabeth Leila January 2012 (has links)
My thesis explores the posthumous literary life in the early modern period by examining responses to ‘dead poets’ shortly after their deaths. Analysing responses to a series of literary figures, I chart a pre-history of literary biography. Overall, I argue for the gradual emergence of a linkage between an individual’s literary output and the personal life that predates the eighteenth century. Chapter 1 frames the critical investigation by contrasting examples of Lives written for authors living before and after my chosen period of specialisation. Both these Lives reflect changed attitudes towards the writing of poets’ lives as a result of wider discourses that the following chapters examine in more detail. Chapter 2 focuses on the events following the death of Robert Greene, an author often described as the first ‘professional’ English writer. The chapter suggests that Greene’s notoriety is for the most part a posthumous construct resulting from printed responses to his death. Chapter 3 is concerned with the problem of reconciling a poet’s life-narrative with the vita activa model and examines potential causes for the ‘gap’ between Sir Philip Sidney’s public life and his works, which continues to pose a challenge for biographers. Chapter 4 examines the evolution of Izaak Walton’s Life of Donne. The ‘life history’ of Walton’s Lives, particularly the Life of Donne, reflects an accidental discovery of a biographical technique that anticipates literary biography. My method is mainly based on bibliographical research, comparing editions and making distinctions between them which have not been made before, while paying particular attention to paratextual materials, such as dedications, prefaces and title pages. By investigating assumptions about individual authors, and also authorship in general, I hope to shed some light on a promising new area of early modern scholarship and direct greater scrutiny towards the assumptions brought into literary biography.

Goda journalister, eviga hjältar : En diskursanalys om nyhetsjournalistikens gestaltning av Kim Wall och Nils Horners eftermäle / Good journalists, eternal heroes : A discourse analysis of news journalisms portrayal of Kim Wall and Nils Horners posthumous reputationSamuelsson, Julia, Pliscovaz, Julia January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how news journalism represented the two swedish journalists Kim Wall and Nils Horner, when describing their posthumous reputation after they were murdered during assignments. The research questions examined were: How does the journalism, in describing their posthumous reputations, portray the story of Kim Wall, and Nils Horner? What differences and similarities can be found in how they are portrayed as journalists, and as victims? We used Faircloughs critical discourse analysis (CDA) to find reoccurring discourses in the description of Horner and Wall. By examining the characteristics they were assigned and what conclusions the audience were offered to draw about their journalistic competence and about them as victims of murder, we found many similarities between Horner and Wall. They are both described as exceptionally competent. They are also portrayed as born with a “calling” towards the journalistic profession, and in both cases, they are ascribed with next to supernatural characteristics. As victims of murder we found them to be portrayed as idealistic, with some variations in relation to the description of the content of their character, and where the murder took place. Our study shows that the discourses we found contribute to the creation of heroic myths in the news journalisms description of them. They are elevated, and our conclusion is that by elevating their murdered colleagues as heroes, the news journalists are also elevating themselves and, in turn, the journalistic profession.

Previous issue date: 2013 / This comparative study works with two types of literary works. The novels The cousin Basílio and Posthumous Memoirs Of Brás Cubas are related through the literary criticism on the Portuguese novel published in Brazil in 1878. Among the critics, there was Machado de Assis. The text examines various elements of the novel by Eça de Queirós, among them there are Realism, narrator and character construction. Besides that, it is analysed how the novel by Eça de Queirós was received by literary criticism in Brazil in 1878, especially by Machado de Assis, whose critical text became famous. In this essay, the Brazilian author invokes elements of moral and aesthetic nature against the Portuguese novel, thus revealing elements of what could be named as Ars poetics of Machado de Assis. The text also evaluates the changes tried by the Brazilian novelist in addressing issues and elements present in the Portuguese text. Thus, it proposes the idea that reading The Cousin Basílio influenced the production of Posthumous Memoirs Of Brás Cubas.

Romantic posthumous life writing : inter-stitching genres and forms of mourning and commemorationChiou, Tim Yi-Chang January 2012 (has links)
Contemporary scholarship has seen increasing interest in the study of elegy. The present work attempts to elevate and expand discussions of death and survival beyond the ambit of elegy to a more genre-inclusive and ethically sensitive survey of Romantic posthumous life writings. Combining an ethic of remembrance founded on mutual fulfilment and reciprocal care with the Romantic tendency to hybridise different genres of mourning and commemoration, the study re- conceives 'posthumous life' as the 'inexhaustible' product of endless collaboration between the dead, the dying and the living. This thesis looks to the philosophical meditations of Francis Bacon, John Locke and Emmanuel Levinas for an ethical framework of human protection, fulfilment and preservation. In an effort to locate the origin of posthumous life writing, the first chapter examines the philosophical context in which different genres and media of commemoration emerged in the eighteenth century. Accordingly, it will commence with a survey of Enlightenment attitudes toward posthumous sympathy and the threat of death. The second part of the chapter turns to the tangled histories of epitaph, biography, portraiture, sepulchre and elegy in the writings of Samuel Johnson, Henry Kett, Vicesimus Knox, William Godwin and William Wordsworth. The Romantic culture of mourning and commemoration inherits the intellectual and generic legacies of the Enlightenment. Hence, Chapter Two will try to uncover the complex generic and formal crossovers between epitaph, extempore, effusion, elegy and biography in Wordsworth's 'Extempore Effusion upon the Death of James Hogg' (1835-7) and his 'Epitaph' (1835-7) for Charles Lamb. However, the chapter also recognises the ethical repercussions of Wordsworth's inadequate, even mortifying, treatment of a fellow woman writer in his otherwise successful expression of ethical remembrance. To address the problem of gender in Romantic memorialisation, Chapter Three will take a close look at Letitia Elizabeth Landon' s reply to Wordsworth's incompetent defence of Felicia Hemans. Mediating the ambitions and anxieties of her subject, as well as her public image and private pain, 'Felicia Hemans' (1838) is an audacious composite of autograph, epitaph, elegy, corrective biography and visual portraiture. The two closing chapters respond to Thomas Carlyle's outspoken confidence in 'Portraits and Letters' as indispensable aids to biographies. Chapter Four identifies a tentative connection between the aesthetic of visual portraiture and the ethic of life writing. To demonstrate the convergence of both artistic and humane principles, this cross-media analysis will first evaluate Sir Joshua Reynolds's memoirs of his deceased friends. Then, it will compare Wordsworth's and Hemans's verse reflections on the commemorative power and limitation of iconography. The last chapter assesses the role of private correspondence in the continuation of familiar relation and reciprocal support. Landon's dramatic enactment of a 'feminine Robinson Crusoe' in her letters from Africa urges the unbroken offering of service and remembrance to a fallen friend through posthumous correspondence. The concluding section will consider the ethical implications for the belated memorials and services furnished by friends and colleagues in the wake of her death.

Un livre jamais paru ? Le manuscrit Riccardiano 2354 et l’héritage épistolaire de Giorgio Vasari / A Book Remained Unpublished ? The Manuscript Riccardiano 2354 and the Epistolary Legacy of Giorgio VasariBellotti, Michele 10 December 2018 (has links)
A valuable source of information on the author of The Lives of the Artists, the correspondence of Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) is well known to art historians, mainly since its almost complete edition published by Karl Frey (1923-1930). If we consider the fact that Vasari zealously kept his numerous letters during his whole life, as well as the remarkable stylistic quality of many of these texts, we realise the importance of inquiring into how significant his epistolary writing could have been to him. Did Vasari see his missives as an essential part of his cultural legacy? In this case, it has to be questioned whether the artist could have ever conceived the project of publishing a selection of his letters, in accordance with a widespread practice among literates in the Fifteenth century. A collection of Vasari’s letters was actually gathered and still stands out from the large number of documents of his vast carteggio: it’s the manuscript Riccardiano 2354, held by the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence. Dating from the late Fifteenth century, this small codex contains forty-eight letters posthumously copied by the artist’s nephew and principal heir of his estate, Giorgio Vasari the Younger (1562-1625), an official of the Medicean Court deeply versed in several scientific and technical disciplines. This study investigates the process of selection, transcription and possible manipulation conducted by Vasari the Younger on his uncle’s original epistolary sources, which are nowadays still missing. Several material or textual hints can suggest that the Riccardiana’s volume might have been a “libro di lettere”, a book of letters designed for publication, but finally never printed. The chief aim of this editorial effort would have been a posthumous celebration of Vasari’s life and artistic achievements, through the highlighting of his missives. The comparison between the texts included in the Riccardiana’s manuscript and other excluded letters, allows us to recognise, as the essential mainstay in Giorgio the Younger’s work, the design of a biographical depiction of Vasari’s figure, focusing on specific traits and omitting others. The artist’s epistolary legacy seems to be occasionally subject to his nephew’s personal career requirements in the Medicean context of his time. The result of this research is a series of considerations on the dynamics inherent in Vasari’s epistolary writing, such as the various functions that it could assume according to the different phases of the artist’s career. Epistolarity has been Vasari’s main tool for self-fashioning towards his correspondents; as well as for literary learning and for the conception of the device of ekphrasis, developed on a larger scale in the Lives.
