If I had a voice I'd sing: the relation between the forest and the identity in music videos by Fever ray and Iamamiwhoami

Johansson, Oskar January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the forest can be used to mirror the identity. Indoing so, music videos by Fever Ray and Iamamiwhoami are being analyzed. The portrayalconsists of two short stories. In these, the relation to the forest is investigated on a moreindividual level. The method is more searching than theorizing. The essay analyzes musicvideos, with a gender perspective, as images and metaphors. Theorists used are amongothers Jean Baudrillard, Timothy Morton and Judith Butler. From their theories the thesisinvestigates the values and assumptions that can be said to constitute the representation of theforest and the identity in the videos. The result is the image of a fragmented world, unwillingto come to concrete conclusions. On one hand the music videos show individuals who workswith the overtaking of given cultural images of the forest and gender. On the other hand a willto reject the same images can be seen. Likewise, the portrayal shows individuals who struggleto come to terms with their place in the given order but never really succeeds.

Andersson, Kevin, Ahlén, Jonatan January 2024 (has links)
At the core of the theory of the “circular economy” (CE) is efficient resource-management. Effectively reusing material and components in a “circular system” serves as an alternative to the linear production model that has caused environmental concerns. Implementing a “circular economy” (CE) is, however, hampered by criticism since it is too vague a theory, pursuing a technological and economic agenda and therefore not taking into account the many social and cultural factors that drive consumption in society. The innovation of electric cars is seen as a part of the solution to the environmental problems. But even with a positive climate approach, it still seems to be a challenge for actors to create incentives for consumers to start investing in electric cars and move towards a more “circular” car industry. Within the context of postmodernism and “consumer culture theory” (CCT), this thesis focuses on how symbolic and cultural values in consumers affect the implementation of a circular economy. Using electric cars as an example of circular economy production, the thesis aims at investigating what makes consumers purchase an electric vehicle. In the same context, a deeper analysis of the electric cars contribution to the circular economy was conducted to understand what it means for a product to be fully “circular”. By employing a qualitative research methodology, phone interviews were conducted to explore the respondents experience of electrical cars. Findings from this research reveal that the motivation to buy electric cars predominantly stem from symbolic, technical, or economic values that contribute to the respondent’s social status in society. The choice to consume electric cars is driven by needs of luxury or economic benefits rather than environmental concerns. This strengthens the notion that sociocultural factors can lead to inertia regarding the implementation of a more resource-efficient circular economy. The respondents believe that electric cars can make a better contribution to the circular economy in the future, emphasizing the need for more efficient recycling of electric vehicle batteries.

Reading Postmodern, Reading Images:A Visual Analysis of Postmodern Wordless Picture Books

Mengying Xue (18396882) 17 April 2024 (has links)

ABSTRACT

This dissertation delves into postmodern wordless picture books, employing a multimodal content analysis across twenty-eight titles. It stands on a theoretical framework amalgamating concepts from multimodality grounded in social semiotics, critical literacy, and postmodernism. Among the corpus, three titles— Alien Nation (Bassi, 2021), and The Rabbits (Tan, 1998) and The Other Side (Bányai, 2005)— emerge as principal subjects of analysis, with the remaining twenty-five titles providing contextual support. Guiding this journey is Barthes' (1977) tripartite model of visual textual meaning at the literal, symbolic, and personal levels, illuminating the intricate layers of the analyzed picture books.

The analysis unveils distinguishing features of these books: 1) Disruption of boundaries of story worlds and reality; 2) Disruption of space and/or time; 3) Multiple levels of intertextuality; 4) Visual incongruity, visual metaphor and 5) Personal Narratives. Such characteristics are found to challenge narrative conventions, blur reality-fiction distinctions, and implore readers to cultivate personal narratives and critical interpretations.

However, the research's significance extends beyond feature identification. It births a postmodern literacy pedagogy that encompasses visual, critical, and postmodern dimensions. This pedagogy advocates for embedding postmodern wordless picture books in pre-service teacher curricula. The aim surpasses genre acquaintance, aspiring for a profound grasp of the books' visual nuances and ideological layers. As these visual dynamics play a pivotal role in shaping a reader's experience, they bolster critical reading and foster personal and emotive connections to narratives. By engaging with such books, pre-service teachers gain multifaceted insights into intricate social and historical issues. They're empowered to question prevailing narratives, embrace diverse perspectives, and champion social justice and educational equity. Viewed through this prism, postmodern wordless picture books serve as powerful tools, guiding future educators to see the world from diverse perspectives, navigate uncertainties, foster empathy, and empower varied voices, ultimately becoming advocates for change and inclusion.

Die Plausibilisierung des christlichen Glaubens in einer postmodernen Gesellschaft : eine kritische Auseinadersetzung mit dem apologetischen Ansatz von Heinzpeter Hempelmann / Making Christian faith plausible in a postmodern society : a critical discussion of Heinzpeter Hempelmann's apologetic approach

Langenegger, Roland 07 1900 (has links)
Text in German / We live in a time of postmodern influence which proclaims that there are no absolute values and all opinions are equal. Consequently it is thought that no one can judge whether something is right or wrong. But, according to the Bible`s instructions, that is exactly what we should do. We shouldn’t conform to the world, but let God change our thinking and being. This is the only way to recognize right or wrong (Romans 12:2). As Christians we have been commissioned by Jesus to carry the gospel into all the world and to lead people to become his followers. For this reason we have to ask the question in this age of how the gospel can be made plausible in a postmodern context and how Christian values can be made understood. H-P Hempelmann has already dealt with such questions intensively. For this reason, this thesis will, among other things, examine his apologetic method.

Swanepoel, Isabeau Louise January 2014 (has links)
The church music of the Southern African Dutch Reformed Church is in the midst of a paradigm shift: traditional liturgy is changing; in many church services well-known organ music and congregational singing are making way for music in a contemporary style. A music band is often used instead of the organ and hymns from the Liedboek are mostly replaced by songs in various styles. Traditional liturgical music is in a period of uncertainty and experimentation. The views of clergymen and church musicians seem to often and increasingly diverge when considering spirituality of the services and the role that congregational music plays in the spirituality. Research has shown that the organ is still the music instrument of choice for services of the Dutch Reformed Church and that 90% of clergymen find the use of organ music in church a positive experience. The average post-modern church member prefers that traditional and current musical styles are used side-by-side in the liturgy and liturgical music of the church to cater for the requirements of the different spiritual styles in congregations. The writer establishes that effective organ playing, with or without other instruments, can adequately provide for the majority of these post-modern worship styles. It is necessary that organists adapt to the changing demands of congregations through continued studies. / MMus (Musicology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
