Temporal Distancing and Emotion Regulation : An ERP Study

Rego, José January 2018 (has links)
Reappraisal is a cognitive emotion regulation strategy that induces a reduction in the arousal response elicited by both unpleasant and pleasant stimuli. One form of reappraisal is that of temporal distancing. Temporal distancing is the cognitive tool that allows the individual to perceive the stimuli in a broader temporal perspective.Reappraisal’s impact on the arousal response can be measured by assessing the amplitude of the event-related potential (ERP) component the late positive potential(LPP), a centro-parietal slow-wave ERP beginning around 350 ms post-stimulus and sustaining for up to several seconds. The aim of this study was to test various temporal-related perspectives in order to see their effect on the LPP. The analysis of the data suggests that a decrease in the amplitude of the LPP in response to emotionally unpleasant facial stimuli corresponds to adopting a temporal distancing strategy, regardless of the exact temporal distance chosen.

Evaluation of non-genetic factors affecting birth weight of Kalahari red goats in South Africa

Ramoroka, Mamidi Prince January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. Agriculture (Animal Production)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of some non-genetic factors on birth weight of Kalahari Red goats. Data on pedigree, breeding and performance records (N=1902) of Kalahari Red goat kids born in the Northern, Southern and Eastern regions of South Africa during the period from 2008 to 2017 were used. Least squares analysis revealed that season of birth, sire age, dam age, sex of kid, breeder, year of birth and Litter size were significant (p<0.05) sources of variation for birth weight in Kalahari Red goats kids. The average birth weights (BW) were 2.45 ± 0.57 kg, 3.33 ± 0.15 kg and 3.14 ± 0.08 kg kg for Eastern, Northern and Southern regions, respectively. Kids born in the Northern region were heavier (3.33 ± 0.158 kg) than those born in the Eastern regions (2.45 ± 0.57 kg). However, region had no significant effect (p>0.05) on birth weight. Breeder effect was significant (p<0.05). Kidding interval was not significant (P>0.05). The average birth weight of male kids was higher than female kids (3.05 ± 0.21 kg: 2.89 ± 0.20 kg), and the difference was significant (P<0.05). The research found a significant effect (p<0.05) of Litter size with the average birth weight of single, twins, triples and quadruplets kids being 3.10 ± 0.19 kg, 2.9 ± 0.20 kg, 2.99 ± 0.20 kg and 2.87 ± 0.36 kg respectively. The kids that were born as single were heavier than those that were born as multiple (twins, triplets and quadruplets). There were four seasons of birth analysed in the study, which were found to be highly significant (P<0.05) on birth weight. Year of birth had significant effect (p<0.05) on birth weight. The kids born in the year 2015 were heavier in BW (3.39 ± 0.23 kg) than those born in the other years, while the kids born in 2016 had the lowest BW (1.91 ± 0.21 kg). Age of dam and sire had a significant effect (p<0.05) on birth weight. It was then concluded that season of birth, sire age, sex of kid, dam age, breeder, year of birth and Litter size significantly influence birth weight of Kalahari Red goat’s kids and, therefore, need to be included in genetic evaluation models. The role of the late positive potential in distraction : A systematic review

Strid, Nanna January 2021 (has links)
The late positive potential (LPP) is increasingly used as an indicator of emotional salience, which can be reduced by effective emotion regulation (ER), thus making LPP differences a practical marker of ER effects. One commonly used ER strategy is that of explicit distraction, a form of distraction that is consciously monitored and directed. Studies have shown that distraction modulates the LPP, and there are theoretical as well as empirical reasons to suspect that distraction occurs at an early stage in the timecourse of the LPP. However, the consistency of these findings have not yet been systematically assessed. This systematic review was conducted to address this gap in the literature. Following a literature search across three databases, nine empirical studies were systematically reviewed to assess the consistency of the effect of distraction on LPP latency and amplitudes. Mean LPP amplitude measurements from 270 healthy young adults, engaging in distraction and passive viewing during exposure to emotional stimuli, were gathered and reviewed. Mean differences were compared to assess the consistency of the LPP during distraction. Results showed consistent early LPP activation at centro-parietal sites, but not at frontal sites. These findings support the predictions of the process model of ER and its conceptualization of distraction as an antecedent strategy. The review was limited by the small number of studies, low mean ages of participants, and lack of diversity in stimuli, among other factors. As additional research is needed to further the scientific understanding of ER and its mechanisms, future directions are suggested.

Framtidens former Additiv tillverkning / The Forms of the Future Additive manufacturing

Hansson, Jakob January 2020 (has links)
The key to progress within every form of engineering in addition to product development whihin all markets is the capacity to manufacture new and improved products. The demands and need flr better and better products has brought forth a constant evolution within manufacturing systems from the traditional methods as forging, drilling and casting, to the modern additive systems. This work, created in association with KTHs Department of machine design, examines and investigates 5 out of the 7 major families of additive manufacturing with the purpose of trying to define the future potential of additive manufacturing. In addition, for each system, a possible product or profession is suggested, made possible by the system in question. This is done to clarify the characteristics of that system. This work also demonstrates the product development of a highly customized product, protective shells for small models, motivation behind the additive system of choice and the result of the iterative design process. The investigation, the product development as well as expert opinion resulted in a discussion that both considers additive manufacturing future potential as well as how this potential is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. As a conclusion is the future for additive manufacturing very promising with several different directions in which development can go.

Velocity-Dependent Nucleon-Nucleon Potentials

Bhaduri, Rajat K. 08 1900 (has links)

An investigation is carried out to see whether a nonsingular two-nucleon velocity-dependent potential can give similar results as those of a model hard-core potential in the a-state in nuclear-matter. Reasons for failure of some earlier velocity-dependent model potentials to give saturation in nuclear-matter at reasonable densities are examined and a new velocity-dependent potential is proposed which gives results similar to the model hard-core potential.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Utanförskapet i Svinalängorna : En studie av den didaktiska potentialen i Susanna Alakoskis roman Svinalängorna

Jakobsson, Johanna January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the didactic potential of Susanna Alakoski’s portray of exclusion in the novel Svinalängorna, in relation to the fundamental values stated in the Swedish school curriculum. Reflections about didactic deliberations related to the novel are also included in the study. The analysis was conducted using a close reading method with elements of thematic analysis. Alkestrand’s definition of didactic potential, Stigendal’s concept of exclusion and the intersectionality theory were used in the analysis. The result of this study showed that exclusion is portrayed through three different dimensions in the novel. These dimensions are economical, linguistic and social exclusion. Svinalängorna was found to offer multiple didactic opportunities. Alakoski’s portray of exclusion stimulates reflections that contribute to the student’s critical thinking capacity as well as to their understanding of themselves and others, which is essential in the school’s work with fundamental values. However, the teacher must use deliberate teaching strategies when including Svinalängorna in educational contexts, in order to pre-empt the risks associated with problematic literature in education.
