Niagara ProspectsWong, Johnathan January 2009 (has links)
This thesis proposes a fresh engagement with the idea of the archaic as a means to recover and replenish some of the lost vitality suffered during what William Barrett characterized the modern period as “the gigantic externalization of life.” An introductory essay examines how the related ideas of the archaic, the primal, and the prehistoric have at key moments provided a source of creative energy for the arts of the last century. Collections of found material, and several photographic studies document the city of Niagara Falls—icon of American pop culture and faded relic of romanticism. The photographs present an alternative to the world of the touristic snapshot, and address the questions: In the age of simulation how do we know what is real anymore? Can we learn to see with archaic eyes?

A Study of The Management Performance of Taiwan Power Company and also The Manipulation Situation of Human Resources of Nuclear and Fire Station in Taiwan Power CompanyLee, Ming-Dao 21 August 2003 (has links)
Power business is a somewhat special business¡CIt has no stocks.
Because of this, power business is classified into inherent monopoly business for a very long time before.
Nowadays, most governments of developed countries changed their point of view; they modified the relevant law and began to allow more than two power companies to run on the same power supply area since few years ago. Taiwan's government is affected by this thinking and doing in 1990 and adopted it later since 1994. Firstly, they permitted private power stations built by private enterprises in1995. Since then, domestic power business is treated as a ¡§step by step open¡¨ business.
Different from what other Independent Power Station (So called I.P.P.)has done, Taiwan Power Company has adopted the policy of allocating their maintenance crew in each nuclear and fire power station instead of establishing a dependent sub-maintenance company or outsourcing maintenance job to other power station maintenance contractor as the other I.P.P.s. has done¡C
This is indeed a quite controversy policy even inside the Taiwan Power Company. But most of the members and representatives of workers Union are against any relocating crew or changing policy and even stronger. The policy of privatizing Taiwan Power Company and open competition of electricity-providing is determined definitely by R.O.C. government, still the progress of it is not very clear to the relevant stakeholder. However, the competence of Taiwan Power Company will be needed much more than ever. And the operation cost and management performance is therefore a major and important factor to the position of Taiwan Power Company in the future electricity market.
This research is intended to study only benefit of cost-down and efficiency-rising element of the electricity power company and its nuclear and power station, it concerns nothing to do with any social topics such as working right of the crew , opinion and attitude of the work union and the like.

An investigation on the impact of procurement quality management in a nuclear power stationGumede, Nomfusi Leticia January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Quality))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011. / This research project in Procurement Quality Engineering was conducted at a
Nuclear Power Generation Company in the Western Cape, South Africa. During
the past decade, quality management has become increasingly recognised as
highly desirable for all organisations at all levels. All organisations, to varied
degrees, can benefit from the application of quality management skills in some
parts of their daily operations.
The research project will investigate the impact or effect of late deliveries of
spares on the operational cost of the organisation. The organisation is not aware
what impact the delivery of spares has on operating costs. Against the above
background, the problem to be researched within the ambit of this dissertation
reads as follows: "Poor product and / or service delivery from Vendors and / or
Suppliers have an adverse impact on the output of the Procurement Quality
Department" .The primary research objectives of this study are the following:
~ To emphasise the importance of quality within the supply chain.
~ To investigate the impact of non-conforming items delivered to a Nuclear
Power Plant.
~ To determine measures which can be put in place to improve
communication between suppliers, vendors, buyers and procurement quality
engineering.
~ To determine or investigate the cost of poor quality in the organisation.
~ To improve the quality of goods and services through the application of a
quality management system within the supply chain.
The research method used in this research project involved both qualitative and
quantitative research processes. Questionnaires and statistical techniques were
used to analyse the data, and to draw conclusions and recommend possible areas
for improvement. The research methodology falls within the ambit of a case
study.

Stanovení objemové aktivity nuklidů záření gama ve vzorcích životního prostředí a posouzení vlivu provozu Jaderné elektrárny Temelín na výslednou aktivitu / Determination of volume activity of gamma nuclide in environmental samples and assessment of influence of NPP Temelin on actual measured activityDAVIDOVÁ, Lenka January 2007 (has links)
In this thesis I target the assesment of a volume activity of gamma ray nuclides in the environment and the examination of the operation the Nuclear Power Station (NPS) Temelín in term of emitting the gamma ray nuclides and their environmental impact. There were collected data of several sorts of environmental samples for statistical analysis. The activity of gamma ray nuclides released by nuclear power plants to the environment after its initiation was compared to the activity of gamma ray nuclides contained it the environment before the initiation of the NPS. It was chosen five exemplary samples - , aerosoles, sediments, milk, soil and surface moisture, which have been scanning in years 1995 and 2005. In these samples, that have sufficient amount of data (sorts of milk, aerosoles and surface moisture) so the statistical analysis was relevant, it was proved, by the non-parametrical Mann-Whitney statistical testing, that there were no statistical difference between the data before and after the initiation of the NPS. The environmental impact wasn´t demonstrated. In these samples, that haven´t sufficient amount of data (sediments and soil), they were also tested (parametrical t. test) and it was proved that there were no statistical difference between the data before and after the initiation of the NPS. Because of very low quality of the testing, we have to use the box plot to ascertain the influence of NPS. In these plots the environmental impact wasn´t demonstrated as well.
