Práce s ilustrací v mateřské škole jako podpora porozumění předčítanému textu / Working with illustration in kindergarten as a support of reading comprehension

Richterová, Kristýna January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic of work with illustration in kindergarten as support to understanding a text that is read aloud. The aim is to design and verify methods of working with illustrations in kindergarten that support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I deal with illustration, visual literacy, method of working with a book, understanding a text (read aloud) and the characteristics of preschool children with regard to the topic of the thesis. Subsequently, I apply this knowledge in the practical implementations. In the practical part, I propose and verify methods of working with illustration in kindergarten which should support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. The thesis is focused on qualitative research in which I compared differences between research and experimental group sample. First, I tested the level of skill of all twenty children when working with illustrations and understanding of a text read aloud (both research and experimental group samples). Then I put together seven preparations where I focused on the development of reading strategies and I supported the children in the understanding of the text read aloud on the basis of selected expected outcomes...

Embodiment and agency in digital reading : preschoolers making meaning with literary apps

Frederico, Aline January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates meaning-making in children's joint-reading transactions with literary apps. The analysis of meaning-making focuses on embodiment as a central aspect of literary app's texts and their reading and on children's negotiation of agency in the act of joint-reading. Meaning-making is understood through a multimodal social semiotics perspective, which considers that meaning is realised in the dynamic transaction between reader, text and social context. Therefore, the dissertation integrates the analysis of the apps and of the children's responses to capture the dynamics of meaning-making in such transactions. Case studies were conducted with six families, who read the apps The Monster at the End of This Book (Stone & Smollin, 2011) and Little Red Riding Hood (Nosy Crow, 2013) in an English public library. The central method of data collection involved video-recorded observations of parent-child joint-reading events, complemented by graphic elicitation, informal interviews and a questionnaire. The video data was analysed through multimodal methods. The findings indicate that the participant readers used their bodies not only as a material point of contact and activation of the interactive features but also as a resource for meaning-making in their transactions with the apps. The reader's body was essential in their engagement with the material and interactive affordances of the apps, in reader's expressions of their responses, and in the sharing of the reading experience with the parents. The body of the reader, through spontaneous and interactive gestures, is a mode of communication in the multimodal ecologies of both the text and the reader's responses. Furthermore, the child readers constantly negotiated their agency within the constraints posed by the text, which include the narrative itself and its interactive features, and those posed by the joint-reading situation. The bodies of the readers played an essential role in this dual negotiation of agency. Children's agency was scripted, that is, the readers exerted their agency within the limitations of a script. The script, however, allowed readers to improvise, and their performances also involved resistance to the script through playful subversion. In the joint-reading event, children's agency was foregrounded, positioning the children as protagonist readers, who performed most of the interactions and lived the aesthetic experience of the text fully, to the expense of their parents, who mostly participated as supporting readers, transferring their agency to the children through scaffolding.

Measures taken by parents to prevent malaria

Dihno, Anastazia Emil 02 1900 (has links)
A quantitative, explorative, descriptive contextual study was conducted to determine to what extent the malaria control measures proposed by the Tanzanian government had been implemented by parents of children between the ages 0-5 years who lived in Bukumbi village. Structured interviews were conducted with 40 parents of children who had been admitted for malaria treatment during 2007, and the data analysed by computer. Although respondents had a basic knowledge of preventive measures they did not implement actions preventing the anopheles mosquitoes’ breeding in this tropical area. The vicious cycle of poverty, malaria episodes and lack of proper malaria health education hampered the implementation of control measures such as the spraying of houses with insecticides. Although the government of Tanzania subsidises insecticide treated bed nets the respondents did not maintain these nets and did not renew the insecticide treatment of these nets. The incidence of malaria is unlikely to decline in the Bukumbi village unless all identified factors are addressed. / Health Studies / M.A.

Investigating the needs and challenges of underachieving Grade R learners in a Mitchell’s Plain primary school

Filander, Beranese 10 1900 (has links)
Many learners enter Grade 1 underprepared, because they have not had the chance to develop the necessary skills, values or attitudes expected of learners in this year. This results in academic backlogs and school underachievement, with many learners from poor socio-economic backgrounds in which poverty and unemployment are rife. Early identification of gaps in their learning as well as the support is crucial. Landsberg (2005, p.80) states that addressing early intervention implies not only a focus on the child and the needs of children but also facilitation of the environment in which they live. Against this background the study aims to investigate the needs and challenges of underachieving Grade R learners in a Mitchell’s Plain primary school. A phenomenological qualitative research approach was adopted, using purposeful sampling to obtain participants, and semi-structured interviews, observations and documents to collect data from two Grade R practitioners. A thematic document analysis of 20 underachieving Grade R learners followed to support the findings. The researcher argues that not enough support is being provided for these learners; hence the study seeks to determine their needs and challenges in the school. It is believed that the findings will contribute meaningfully by making recommendations for focused support for these learners. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

Its theorical central axle is an explanatory study about colors in childhood, over all about childrens in preschool. Some important theorical aspects have been observed, such as: the choice and the use of colors, the cultural and partner-familiar aspects, beyond the imagination itself, having Vygotsky as the main theoretical base. Beyond the theorical research, this dissertation also includes a Field Research in a Junior Education School, in the city of Florianópolis. For a more detailed study, two children have been chosen: a four years old boy and a five years old girl. During the field research, it has been collected some artistic works of both children, as well as interviews with the children and their parents. Some domestic visits have also been included in the research, in which the researcher had the oportunity to get in contact with each children's life context, and also take photos of their personal objects for data usage. The methodology used for the Field Research analysis was the "Content Analysis", by Bardin.Using this methodology, two main analysis categories have been presented: "Cores, interação social e contexto sociocultural: uma complexa trama na infância" and "Cor e imaginação: o fio da infância na construção do conhecimento", each one of them subdivided in its own respective categories / A presente dissertação apresenta-se como requisito para a obtenção do título de Mestre em Artes Visuais, estando inserida na linha de pesquisa Ensino das Artes Visuais.

Smith, Anna Magrietha 16 May 2010 (has links)
Sowel kwantitatiewe as kwalitatiewe navorsing is vervolgens gebruik. ENGLISH: In this research, the South-African marriage with preschool children was investigated. This phase of marriage, full of challenges and marital tasks, is regarded showing the lowest degree of marital adjustment and the highest incidence of divorce. The meaning, (spiritual intelligence or SQ), emotional experience, understanding and dealing with these challenges (emotional intelligence or EQ), as well as the relation to marital adjustment, were investigated. Firstly, a questionnaire was developed that could measure the characteristics of SQ, namely: (i) finding purpose and meaning in a given situation, (ii) motivations of behaviour, and (iii) values. Data from 198 respondents indicated the reliability of the subscales, which vary from 0.47 to 0.80. Satisfactory construct validity was obtained by researching the relation between the subscales of the SQ questionnaire and the value scale (r varied from 0.15; p ≤ 0.05 to 0.54; p ≤ 0.01). Next, both qualitative and quantitative research were utilised. In the quantitative research, the MMV SQ questionnaire, the marital adjustment questionnaire of Spanier (Dyadic Adjustment Scale), as well as the SSRI (Schutte Self-Report Inventory) were completed by the respondents. The respondents were 84 married individuals, including 34 couples. The relationship between marital adjustment and EQ was investigated by calculating correlations between the subscales of the DAS and SSRI. It transpired that an optimistic frame of mind showed a correlation with all the subscales of marital adjustment. It also appeared that the recognition of the own and the spouse’s feelings, social skills, and the application of emotions were related to increased marital satisfaction as well as marital consensus. Social skills also displayed a correlation with affectional expression. EQ, however, did not show a strong correlation with marital cohesion. Next, the relation between the subscales of the DAS was compared to that of the MMV-SQ questionnaire. Meaningful correlations between some scales of marital adjustment and SQ occurred, in particular with regard to the motivational scale: couples whose behaviour are motivated by mastering, appear to display a higher degree of marital adjustment, while the negative sources of motivation like self-centredness, craving and fears, display a negative correlation with marital adjustment. Few correlations were found between marital adjustment and purpose and meaning (between meditative awareness and marital consensus; between empathetic acceptance and openness, and affectional expression). No correlation was found with regard to values. Differences between the EQ and SQ of men and women were also investigated, but no major differences were observed. By means of multiple regressions it was indicated that some biographic variables did show a correlation with marital adjustment. Valuable information was obtained in the qualitative research regarding the couple’s roles in child-raising and domestic chores, the balance between career and family, personal satisfaction (SQ) in the marriage, as well as the understanding and handling of feelings (EQ). The value of this research lies in the foundational work of the SQ questionnaire in particular, as well as useful information with regard to South African marriages with preschool children. Guiding couples in their dealing with feelings (EQ), as well as providing an insight into the sources of motivation (SQ), should therefore enhance their marital adjustment. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

Husen under bron Förskola : Houses Under the Bridge Kindergarden

Li, Rui-Xin January 2014 (has links)
Kindergarden - How can we create different synergies between different fields that they can benefit from each other? What different activities will suit the kindergarden? How will our perception of the kindergarden, of its need and function in society, change? In this Degree Project in Architecture I will be investigating the combination of the kindergarden together with a restaurant and a dance studio. I believe these activities will harmonize since they have overlapping benefits: We all eat, move and grow. With the new architectural activities in mind, I will further investigate the importance of the kindergarden as a part of society, more specifically our perception of what function it may, may not or could fill. I share the idea with a lot of authors, scientist that we are headed toward a society where children are kept too safe, thus minimising their chance to experience and learn to cope with a harsh reality when they grow up as adults. It's ok to get hurt to an extent, as long as they do not endanger their lives.

Förskolebarns förståelse och inställning till Covid-19 rekommendationer i förskolemiljö : En kvalitativ intervjustudie med förskolebarn från Mellansverige / Preschoolers' understanding and attitude towards Covid-19 recommendations in preschool environments : A qualitative interview study with preschool children from Central Sweden

Cordova, Viktoria January 2021 (has links)
Kategorierna bestämdes utifrån pandemirekommendationerna i intervjuguiden. / Introduction: Unequal health can be seen at an early age. Preschools can compensate for the unequal upbringing conditions. The actions in preschool environment in the era of a pandemic can affect the children's development and future. The Convention on the Rights of the Child states that children have the right to express their opinion on all issues concerning children, however, children's own perspectives are missing in the exploration of pandemic recommendations in preschool environments. The outcome of a pandemic intervention is related to the level of health literacy; however, children's level of health literacy has barely been investigated. Aim: From preschoolers´ perspective examine their understanding and attitude towards pandemic prevention and control in preschool environments, during covid-19 pandemic 2020–2021. Methods: Fifteen preschoolers were interviewed with a semi-structured interview guide with image support. Qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach were used to analyze the empirical data. The categories were formed based on the pandemic recommendations in the interview guide. Nutbeam's (2000) description of health literacy levels was used as an analysis tool when themes sorting out. ResultsThe results presented, at a functional level of health literacy, that the pandemic recommendations were accepted, but it didn´t feel good to have to avoid anything. The result presented, at an interactive and critical level, reflective thoughts about the recommendations, especially what impact they had on social interactions. If the recommendation meant obstacles against social interactions, the attitude towards the recommendation became more negative. Positive attitudes were presented towards handwashing and outdoors activities. Negative attitudes were expressed towards staying at home with only mild symptoms and towards physical distance. Neutral attitudes were expressed towards applying cough etiquette and avoiding touching your face. Conclusion: The social gathering that preschools provide are important for children. Children shouldn´t be advised to keep physical distance from each other in preschool. The preventive measures should always be in use, with a special focus on hand hygiene and outdoor activities.

How to Solve the Problem of Inactivity Amongst Preschool Children with IoT / Hur man löser problemet med inaktivitet bland dagisbarn med hjälp av IoT

Leander, Malin January 2024 (has links)
WHO has set up activity guidelines for children between 0-5 years of age. If children fail to follow the guidelines they risk developing NCD diseases in the future as a consequence. Several children in the age group fail to follow these guidelines all over the world. Adults have used IoT solutions to track and maintain their activity. There have been IoT devices developed for kids but none focus on the age group of 0-5 year old’s. Therefore the objective for this study was to examine how the age group could reach the guidelines for physical activity with the assistance of an IoT device. To study this the goal was to design an application that will assist parents in tracking their children’s activity and giving them suitable exercises. To investigate the subject a theoretical framework was created. It focused on investigating how physicalactivity can be measured, what sensors could be used, how could the data be visualized effectively, what motivates children to move and what research method and data collection methods that could be used throughout the project. The method chosen was the double diamond method which consisted of the stages discover, define, develop and deliver. During the discover phase an interview was performed with a key-informant with expertise in sports medicine and activity tracking with 3-5 yearold’s. A survey was also sent out to parents to investigate the population. In the define phase a concept was formed from the collected data. In the develop stage a Lo-fi Figma prototype was created and tested on both the key-informant and expertswithin UX and/or IT-consulting. The Lo-fi prototype contained graphs showcasing the family’s activity, activities to perform with their child, a reward page were children could gain rewards for activity and much more. The results showed that the rewards system introduced confused the participants and some thought it would berisky to introduce rewards for activity to children. This since they might then only be active for the reward, not for the fun of the activity itself. In the deliver phasea Mid-fi prototype was created from the feedback received through Lo-fi usabilitytesting. The Mid-fi removed the rewards and added a calendar page. At the calendar page the family could plan and wish for activities. The Mid-fi was tested on parents and the results showed that several of them had a hard time finding the wish-list functionality. There were also many participants who wanted to interact with thegraphs to read more specific information. The discussion evaluated the Mid-fi inrelation to the test results and the theoretical framework. Through the analysis it was concluded that improvements can be made for future versions of the prototype. The conclusions evaluated the Mid-fi in relation to the objective and found that the prototype needed further testing with children to conclude if it would be able to help them follow the WHO’s guidelines. It was also concluded that the application would help parents track their child’s movements as many parents would want to use the application and they all understood the used data visualizations. It was lastly concluded that further research with child care practitioners would have to be performed to identify suitable exercises for the children. However, as the app provides a template to sort and recommend activities, it will help parents choose suitable activities for their child when the library has been built up.
