ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING: THE CHANGING SELF, IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT AND SOCIAL CONTROL

Niman, Katherine M 01 August 2017 (has links)
This sociological study uses online survey data from one hundred and six respondents to explore how social networking websites alter the social self. Critical and symbolic interactionist sociological theory is used as a means to understand the data. This dissertation specifically concerns how social networking websites shape identity, result in a more self-reflexive presentation of self, and serve as a means of both socialization and social control.

Ação imunomoduladora da própolis na apresentação antigênica

Conte, Fernanda Lopes January 2017 (has links)

“Sweat is weakness leaving the body” : A study on the self-presentational practices of sporty top managers in Sweden

Johansson, Janet January 2017 (has links)
Embracing the symbolic interactionist view of the notion of self, applying dramaturgical theories of self-presentation, this study unpacks the linkage between leaders’ lifestyle behaviours (in athletic endeavours) and the formation of their sense of self as occupants of the leadership role from a self-expressive perspective.  I conducted a study of a group of sporty top managers in Sweden. With interviews and observations, I anchored the research focus in verbal expressions within storytelling and in performative expressions of the top managers. Drawing on social interpretations of sport and athleticism and with a dramaturgical analytical frame, I examine how the sporty top managers interpret their athletic endeavours to express important values, beliefs and concerns to express ‘whom they want to become’ as occupants of the leadership role. The analysis shows that lifestyle behaviours in athletic endeavours serve as a new source of self-meanings with which the sporty top managers create and express wishful notions about themselves as occupants of the leadership role. By incorporating athletic values with their distinctive understanding of a ‘good leader’, the top managers seek to present themselves with an idealized image of ‘athletic leaders’. In this process, the top managers outline a role-script that is mainly characterized with self-disciplinary qualities and masculine values, they define the leadership context with athleticism in the centre, and they express an overt intent to elevate some people and exclude others in organizational processes based on athletic values in which they personally believe. Hence, the process of formation of self as ‘athletic leaders’ is not only ‘self-relevant’, but it is personally, interpersonally and socially (organizationally) meaningful. The analysis also shows that the top managers seek to give legitimacy and an elitist status to the idealized view of self by using expressive strategies to appropriate their appearances, regulate emotions and bodily senses, and mould a gendered self-image.   This thesis contributes to leadership studies in several ways. First, the study expands on extant literature theorizing the linkage between lifestyle behaviours and the formation of sense of self as occupants of the leadership role from a new angle. It contends that lifestyle behaviours such as athletic endeavours have become a prime site where business leaders express creative narratives regarding an idealized view of themselves. Second, this study further advocates that the formation of sense of self of leaders is not a simple outcome of different forms of regulative discursive regime.  Rather, this process involves creative self-reflexive activities that address individuals’ personally held values, their distinctive pursuits in becoming an idealized leader, relations with others, and some prevailing leadership notions that they believe to be closely associated with the nature of lifestyle behaviours in which they engage and commit. Third, this study confirms the notion that the formation of the understanding of self of leaders is not only a function of verbal expressive devices, but that it also involves individuals’ performative strategies in ‘expressive control’ (e.g. Down & Reveley, 2009; Goffman, 1959). This thesis adds to understanding this point of view through a discussion of self-presentational practices in non-work related activities. Finally and most importantly, this study suggests that the process of formation of the sense of self of business leaders is expressive of meanings on personal, interpersonal and social dimensions in its own right. That is, through creating new self-meanings in micro-level practices in lifestyle behaviours, the occupants of the leadership role define the situational characteristics (the leadership context), express intentions to enact the power feature of inclusion and exclusion of others; generate new understanding of the leadership role, and they reproduce and strengthen some prevailing leadership ideals.

Autentisk eller inte? : En kvalitativ studie om individers självpresentation på LinkedIn / Authentic or not? : A qualitative study on individuals self presentation on LinkedIn

Neskovska, Viktoria, Merdanic, Lejla January 2017 (has links)
In various social networks available on the Internet, including LinkedIn, individuals may present themselves in a profile with a personal presentation in aim to find a new job. However presentations do differ depending on from which line of profession individuals present themselves from. Do to previous research LinkedIn users utilize strategies to manipulate information they present, also seen in controlling and handling of how an individual should be perceived. The theoretical framework was found in Erving Goffman's theories about impression management which is used to examine the phenomenon on a deeper level. The method used for this study was qualitative method with text analysis where the material was collected from the LinkedIn website and consisted of four different profession categories with ten profiles per category. The study's results showed how profession categories present themselves on LinkedIn, where was even shown what was common and what distinguished. The conclusion was that profession categories present themselves with expressions which are contingent on the norms, values and expectations as conditioned by the given profession. They are therefore the result of an tradition in their social profession which requires that specific form of expression.

Demonstrering av taktil presentation

Kensing, Hampus January 2010 (has links)

Online Communities: An Intersection Between Computer-Mediated Communication, Subcultures and the Presentation of Self in the Global Age

Yousry, Fallon 18 April 2018 (has links)
There has been extensive literature on the subject of subcultures in the fields of criminology and sociology. The term has undergone decades upon decades of revisions and debate amongst scholars. Despite the vast amount of literature available on the term subculture, there is unfortunately no clear-cut definition of what a subculture is, especially after what many sociologists referred to as the Post-Subcultural Turn. While that is problematic in and of itself, the term subculture still has yet to be framed and understood in light of recent technological advancements and strides towards globalization. This thesis will attempt to shed light on the muddled conceptions of the term subculture, as well as expanding subcultural theory to include subcultural engagement in online settings. Chapter 1 will provide a chronological account of the term subculture, including many of its evolutions, revisions and interpretations based on different schools of thought. Chapter 2 will follow up by discussing many of the criticisms directed at past conceptualizations of subculture, and where the term subculture should be heading with regards to expanding its conceptualization without conflating it with other terms. Chapter 2 will finish by suggesting a new path towards conceptualization by adapting subculture to include how subcultures are being formed and maintained through the use of the Internet. To make sense of subcultures using social networking sites in future chapters, Chapter 3 will delve into some of the main technological developments of the Internet including computer-mediated communication, social networks, and how they function as virtual conduits for facilitating social interactions and the spread of knowledge. Chapter 4 will pick up from Chapter 3 by discussing deviance in online settings, as well as introducing a new Goffmanian approach to understanding the presentation of self in online settings. Lastly, Chapter 5 will seek to answer three main questions about subcultures and their existence in online settings: 1. How do social networking sites operate as virtual conduits for the presentation of self? 2. How do subculturalists use social networking sites to create a sense of online community and membership? 3. How do subculturalists employ presentation of self strategies? These questions will be answered by employing an adapted Goffmanian approach to the presentation of self in online settings while also rethinking the concept of subcultural style. Lastly, this thesis will seek to provide guidance on where gaps in the literature still exist and can be explored in the near future.

Dendritic Cells Mediate Protective Immunity Against Salmonella Typhimurium by Regulating Antigen Presentation, Inflammation and Cell Death

Patel, Rajen January 2016 (has links)
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) is an intracellular bacterium that resides within the phagosome of infected cells. ST is the causative agent of gastroenteritis in humans and typhoid like disease in mice. ST infects epithelial cells and phagocytic cells such as dendritic cells (DCs), which are immune sentinels that have been regarded as the most critical antigen-presenting cell (APC). I evaluated the role of CD8α DCs, a subset of DCs capable of antigen presentation of phagosomal pathogens to activate CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, I assessed the role of key cytokines such as the group of classical anti-viral cytokines known as Interferon-I (IFN-I), on licensing CD8+ T cells. Interestingly, IFN-I signalling was necessary for production of inflammatory cytokines and induction of cell death, which activated CD8+ T cells and clearance of ST. Lastly, I examined the role of key cell death pathways in innate immune protection against ST. In particular, I addressed how signalling pathways in necroptosis and pyroptosis are critical for the production of IL-1beta and IL-18 which mediate immune protection against ST. Determining the mechanisms of which DCs engage innate and adaptive immune responses against phagosomal bacteria is the central question of my study and is addressed by examining critical roles of DC function, inflammation and cell death.

The manifestations of perfectionistic self-presentation in a clinical sample

Habke, Amy Marie 11 1900 (has links)
Perfectionism has long been recognized as an important personality trait that has a significant impact on emotional and social well-being. More recently, it has been recognized that there is a stylistic aspect to perfectionism that focuses on a desire to appear perfect. This perfectionistic self-presentation, and in particular, the desire for concealment of imperfections, has been related to psychopathology in past research. However, it is proposed that perfectionistic self-presentation presents a particular concern from a clinical perspective because of it's indirect effects on pathology; a desire to conceal imperfections is especially problematic to the extent that it impacts the experience of therapy and the therapy relationship. The current study examined the cognitive, affective/physiological, and behavioral manifestations of perfectionistic self-presentation in a clinical sample. Ninety clinical subjects completed self-report measures of perfectionistic self-presentation, trait perfectionism, impression management, mood, appraisals, and self-handicapping. A brief structured assessment interview that included a discussion of past mistakes, was conducted by trained clinical interviewers. Physiological monitors recorded heart rate and skin conductance level throughout the interview, and the interview was videotaped. Post-interview measures of mood, appraisals, and self-handicapping, were also completed. Results at the bivariate level showed that the self-protective dimensions of perfectionistic self-presentation were associated with more distress both prior to and following the interview, higher heart rate and greater change in heart rate when discussing mistakes (and greater skin conductance for men), greater claims of disability from self-handicaps, and appraisals of the interviewer as both threatening (wanting more than the participant could provide) and disappointed following the interview. Regression analyses showed that the desire to avoid disclosing imperfections was a unique predictor of appraisals of threat over and above demographics, trait perfectionism, and other measures of distress (interaction anxiety and depression) and impression management, and of appraisals of the interviewer as disappointed following the interview, over and above demographics and trait perfectionism. The block change score for perfectionistic self-presentation predicting interviewer satisfaction was marginally significant over and above emotional distress and impression managment. The desire to avoid displaying imperfections was a unique predictor of lower threat appraisals. Perfectionistic self-presentation also predicted higher heart rate when discussing errors, over and above demographics and other measures of distress and impression management, and greater change in heart rate from relaxation; this relation held when controlling for demographics, trait perfectionism, and emotional distress and impression management. Perfectionistic self-presentation did not predict defensive behaviors and was not a unique predictor of self-reported negative affect. The results are discussed in terms of the implications for therapy and the therapeutic alliance. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

Elucidating the Roles of Novel Genes in MHC-I Presentation

Kriegsman, Barry 19 April 2019 (has links)
The major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) antigen presentation pathway is necessary for the immune system to be able to detect, control, and eliminate cancers. MHC-I binds oligopeptides derived from cellular proteins and presents them on the cell surface to CD8+ T cells. Consequently, the CD8+ T cells can monitor whether any cells are making abnormal proteins and, if so, can destroy those cells. Because MHC-I presentation is not essential for cell viability, immune selection pressure often leads to cancers that are MHC-I low as they can better evade CD8+ T cell recognition. It is, therefore, important to fully understand the mechanisms of MHC-I presentation as this will identify new ways to target and exploit the pathway for cancer therapeutics. Although several components of the MHC-I pathway have already been characterized, some knowledge gaps remain. Unbiased forward genetic screens from our lab identified some novel gene candidates, such as IRF2, which positively regulate MHC-I presentation. In this dissertation, I will reveal which antigen presentation pathway genes are transcriptionally controlled by IRF2 and contribute to the MHC-I presentation deficiency observed in cells lacking IRF2 and I will also show that IRF2 negatively regulates PD-L1 expression. By influencing both MHC-I antigen presentation and PD-L1 expression in this manner, cancers lacking IRF2 (of which there are many) are both harder to see and more difficult to eliminate.
