This study seeks to create an analysis of the men who were members of the Administrative “Mesa” of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi from Vila Rica, in the period between the first elections of the “Mesa” which occurred in 1751 until the year of 1804. We seek the identification of the men who formed the ruling elite of that institution trying to create a prosopographic profile of those men, combined with the analysis of their trajectory, trying to observe their participation in other institutions which conferred prestige and power in that “old regime society”. We try to prove that the participation and especially the occupation of leading position in the Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi worked as another criteria to help the social hierarchisation, offering prestige and visibility, and working as a way of local legitimization to achieve social ascension.

Hranice moci. Etika, moc a korupce / Limits of power. Ethics, power and corruption.

Fišera, Vladimír January 2018 (has links)
The problem of Czech society today is foremost the part of corruption that can be labeled as systemic, large scale or political corruption; and its causes, demonstrations, and therefore also possible solutions differ significantly from those for individual bribery. The public still holds very distorted opinions about the causes and therefore also possible solutions of large scale corruption. The most significant is the idea of political corruption as a personal ethical failure of an individual. The solution to this is their replacement. However, past experiences prove that political corruption is a systemic problem and replacement of individuals does not bring a substantial change. To understand how large scale political corruption functions, it is important to know the point of view of politicians who are its direct participants or encounter it. It is established that a significant motivational factor for corruption is an effort of politicians to keep their power and prestige, and with it the need of raising funds for re- election. Key words: corruption, political corruption, systemic corruption, power, status, prestige

Could Pricing Strategies in Different Regions Create a Sense of Division? : A Qualitative Study in the Pursuit of Scrutinizing European Individuals' Views on Penetration Pricing, Price Skimming, and Prestige Pricing Pertaining to a New Sugar-Sweetened Beverage

Tóth, Zoltán János January 2023 (has links)
Background: To many customers, prices are mundane; however, marketers engage in casuistry to purport their product as superior to others by enticing prices. Prices are the most susceptible variable in the Marketing Mix. The thesis posits a discussion on whether marketers should change pricing techniques depending on if they want to launch a (new) sugar-sweetened beverage in Eastern or Western Europe. Not a plethora of research has been written on this topic, which is why this thesis agog to find out which pricing strategies or strategy they should use when they enter Eastern or/and Western Europe with (new) sugar-sweetened beverages. The three quintessence of price-setting methods this paper exerts and later reflects painstakingly in the analysis chapter are penetration pricing, price skimming, and prestige pricing. Sugar-sweetened beverages were chosen as a central topic of interviews as the great majority of the population consumes sugar- sweetened beverages. All participants could form their opinion on the issue by dint of this aspect.  Method: Qualitative method was chosen for the thesis. The qualitative method opens more room for insights and in-depth discussions with the participants. Seven individuals from Eastern and Western Europe were enquired to answer the questions can be found in the appendix.  Results: The results reflect that it is worth ruminating to marketers to use different pricing strategies in Eastern and Western Europe based on the answers gathered. Besides, the interviews also shed light on how complexly customers view the price and the differences within Europe based on regions. Despite some differences, many similarities were also found in the individuals' perceptions. Lastly, publishing the result, the thesis also aims to draw on how one individual's perceptions change with time and the circumstances that influence it.  Conclusions: From the findings, it might be possible to extrapolate which pricing strategy marketers should use to enter Eastern and Western Europe with a (new) sugar-sweetened beverage. The outcome of the interviews reflects that Eastern European individuals who were interviewed are dismissive of price skimming; meanwhile, the asked Western Europeans were dismissive about penetration pricing and prestige pricing in the context of sugar-sweetened beverages.

The Role of English in South Korean Social Mobility : A Sociolinguistic Study on Korean Native Speakers’ Perspectives, Language Ideologies, and Identities with Respect to English

Schierenbeck, Danja January 2022 (has links)
English has been a central language in various sectors of South Korean (henceforth Korean) society for over a century, with historical events and contexts resulting in a glorification of the language as both an essentiality for success and an indicator of superiority and modernity (Park, 2009; Cho, 2017). With English becoming omnipresent in recent times due to an increasing focus on globalisation within Korean society, most families rigorously pursue English education to ensure optimal chances of employment. In turn, due to the necessity for additional English education outside of school, such as expensive private education, the divide between social classes in Korea has been continuously growing up to this day (Cho, 2017). Due to these existing inequalities and language ideologies, English is generally recognised as an indicator of social class in Korea. Despite the strong history of English in this country, however, Koreans’ perceptions of English, whether they see it as a key for vertical social mobility, and how they conceptualise English with respect to their self-images remain under-researched. Thus, by approaching this topic empirically, the present thesis explores the perspectives of English-speaking and non-English-speaking Korean native speakers regarding the role of English in Korea. To investigate this, the present study incorporates semi-structured interviews on the addressed topics and a subsequent content analysis through which themes are both established and interpreted. The participants were selected according to their age, English proficiency, and respective employment, with all interviewees being in their 20s and all working either in the real estate market or being involved in university undergraduate studies. The participants’ responses in the interviews showed similarities between the two groups, namely that both English-speaking and non-English-speaking participants of the present study position themselves similarly towards the role of English in Korea. First, it seems clear from the responses that English is perceived more as a marker of social class and less as a tool for vertical social mobility. This finding appears to indicate that English influences movement within the social hierarchy of Korea only to a certain extent, according to the interviewees’ perspectives, due to English being less important after recruitment by a company. Second, the participants conceptualise English as having general overt prestige. At the same time, the participants’ responses indicate that they connect English with the possibility of putting themselves in danger of face-threatening acts (FTAs). Thus English is conceptualised positively as being an indicator of intelligence, power, and wealth, while being negatively conceptualised as being a possible threat to the face of Koreans, resulting in their reluctance to speak English.
