In this dynamic environment, in which organizations are constantly revising their business strategies, accounting professionals must also develop new skills that enable them to fulfill their responsibilities adequately. In fact, national and international accounting entities have made efforts to improve and grow the profession in response to emerging needs. The objective of this research is to understand how the professional market is evaluating accounting and accountants in today s business environment. This paper contributes to the study of the accounting profession in Brazil, its focus being the evolution of the profession s prestige. This research was concerned, more specifically, with the institutionalization of the profession in Brazil, the creation of professional associations, the regulation of higher education in Accounting Science, and efforts towards the design and improvement of professional training. The theoretical framework of the study is based on professional sociology. In order to analyze the profession s prestige, weberian theories of class and status, and neo-weberian theories of social class and occupation, were employed. The study is exploratory in nature, as data and information were used to explain the delineation of the profession and to extrapolate the occupational prestige achieved by its professionals. For the study of the profession, the documentary research method was used. The procedure used to assess the status of the profession included semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed through the content analysis method. The results show that the perception of the professional market concerning accountants is strongly impacted by the technical aspects of the profession. However, it was observed that, relative to more active participation by accountants in the decision-making process, perception is lower due to lack of business environment understanding. For its exploratory character, this study was initiated in the professional market and is intended to contribute to the related academic body of work by suggesting ways of achieving professional improvement, which can be used to align training programs, degree programs, and continued education in the field.

Social status in humans : differentiating the cues to dominance and prestige in men and women

Mileva, Viktoria January 2016 (has links)
Human social status has long been of interest to evolutionary and social psychologists. The question of who gets to control resources and be a leader has garnered a lot of attention from these and other fields, and this thesis examines evidence for there being two different mechanisms of achieving high status, and their correlates. The mechanisms are 1) Dominance: being aggressive, manipulative and forcing others to follow you, and 2) Prestige: possessing qualities which make others freely follow you. Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter in which I explain selection pressures, group formation, and the need for social hierarchies; I then describe the two proposed methods of attaining social status and how facial characteristics can give clues as to an individual’s social status. In Chapter 2, my first experimental chapter, I examined how faces created to appear either high in dominance or high in prestige were judged with respect to those traits as well as personality characteristics. Taking this further, in Chapter 3, I looked at how natural variation in real faces would reflect differences in other- and self-perceived ratings of dominance and prestige. Chapter 4 served to examine whether, given a set of words related to social status, I would find differences in what words were placed into dominant or prestige categories. Findings within these chapters are consistent with dominance and prestige being separable methods of attaining high status, from differences in facial appearance (Chapter 2 and 3), to personality characteristics (Chapter 2), to word usage (Chapter 4). Once I had established that these were two distinct routes to achieving high status, I chose to focus on dominance in Chapter 5 and explored the conceptual relationships between dominance and facial expressions. I found that manipulating perceptions of dominance affected how intense expressions of anger, sadness, and fear were perceived (Chapter 5). As there has been a paucity of research in the area of women’s social status, in Chapter 6, I went on to explore what effects cosmetics use in women would have on their perceived social status. I found differences in how men and women perceived women wearing cosmetics, which again points to a distinction between dominance and prestige. My thesis then presents a broad view of the two different mechanisms for attaining high status. Using new methods not otherwise used in exploring dominance and prestige I was able to explore correlates and indicators, as well as perceptions of both strategies. These findings will allow us to determine who might be capable of attaining social status, which of the two methods they might use, as well as what implicit associations we hold about each. They will also open doors for future research into the two strategies, and even help interpret previous research, as many previous studies simply relate to high status and do not distinguish between dominance and prestige.

Om risk, mål och makt : en kritisk diskursanalys / About risk, goal and power : critical discourse analysis

Winberg, Karin January 2017 (has links)

Dacome, Camila Mazi 01 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation proposes, in a first moment, to analyze the Brazilian literary field from the literary award Portugal Telecom. Through the study of the award, we identify some elements that expand an understanding of the field, such as a position of cultural agents, which are writers, editors, curators, critics and cultural administrators. It starts from the assumption that the field is a place of disputes, and that each of the current agents in order to acquire or maintain a prestigious position. In addition, the non - Portugal Telecom award - winning novels, which are more complex than the narrative tendencies of Brazilian literature of the 20th century XXI. A hypothesis and a request for help, a consolation, a prestige already acquired by its agents, functioning doubly as an instrument of legitimation and confirmation of prestige

The Relationship between Occupational Prestige and Psychosocial Development: a Longitudinal Study

Branch, Allison C.M. 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined whether level of occupational prestige in early adulthood and rate of change in occupational prestige had an effect on psychosocial development in middle adulthood and whether gender had an effect on occupational prestige and psychosocial development. Utilizing a subsample from the Rochester Adult Longitudinal Study (RALS), 180 participants were assessed longitudinally, approximately every eleven years after their original assessment in 1966 as college students. Results showed that over time individuals improve in their sense of work competency and individuals differ in their rate of change in occupational prestige over time. However, contrary to the hypotheses, findings indicated that there were no significant relationships between occupational prestige in early adulthood and psychosocial development in middle adulthood. The results also revealed a significant gender difference with respect to occupational prestige with males on average having higher occupational prestige compared to females. In all, it was shown that how productive and confident people perceive themselves to be in the workforce differs. However, there is no direct relationship between occupational prestige how self-perception of work competency. Findings highlight the importance of Eriksonian theory in that individuals continue to develop psychosocially over time.
