Religious education in a multicultural society : an examination of the expanding context of religion and multiracial families

Wilson, James R. 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / In this study, an attempt was made to examine the impact that the multiracial identity is having on the institutional Church and in its attempts to address the problem of racism in the United States. An effort will be made to explore the emergence of anti-racist paradigms that both- move outside the social construction of race and an ideology of racial hatred and which empower people of all hues, ethnic an linguistic groups. Particular emphasis will be placed on those approaches which de-emphasize majoritianism and a need to assert one's superior, moral, historic and pragmatic claims. A strong challenge is given to the Church to re-orientate its imagination away from the chimera of achieving a physically integrated institution in a color blind society and towards a clearer vision of empowerment in a fair and just society, incorporating pluralism in a shared framework. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Analysis of employee participation in occupational health and safety activities in a cement manufacturing organisation in South Africa

Brijlall, Mathurapersadh 11 1900 (has links)
Globally organisations face unacceptable levels of fatalities that translate into financial losses and bad publicity, which can be attributed to the inadequate employee engagement in decision making in daily work activities. This study explores the participative role of employees in the management of occupational health and safety (OHS), and investigates the impact of employee participation on the decision making processes that create a safe workplace. The joint labour-management committees encourage employee participation that improves the injury and disease prevention programs. Four participative approaches exist in the decision making processes, namely Directed Participation, Involvement, Pro-active Participation and Ownership, that are interrelated and integrated with the decision making process. When employees are required to abide by set guidelines and procedures, Directed Participation is appropriate. This has been observed to occur with little or no input from employees, whilst the application of legislation requires the process of involvement where critical decisions are made outside the domain of the employee. The pro-active participation process entails the sharing, consulting and making of joint decisions, which is most suitable in the Safety Health and Environmental committees, ensuring the process of Ownership empowers employees to champion the OHS activities. In OHS management there are instances when numerous participative approaches are utilised simultaneously to make decisions. All employees, both blue collar workers and management have a positive influence in creating a safe workplace, with the likelihood of older and experienced employees participating more than their younger counterparts in the decision making processes within the various OHS forums. Also, the more employees assume full responsibility for their health and safety, the greater is their influence to find solutions to the safety challenges. Additionally, making joint decisions to create a safe workplace will, in turn, encourage employees to participate more. The use of the participative approaches results in an improvement in the iii decision making processes within S.H.E. committees and OHS management processes, thereby making a positive contribution. More research is recommended to explore the relationships between employee participation in decision making and the compliance to OHS legislation, employee training, the safety culture and the influence of trade unions. / Business Management / DBL

A logística reversa de resíduos sólidos em Ituiutaba: do diagnóstico à elaboração de um modelo pró-ativo

Santos, Flávio da Costa 27 February 2007 (has links)
This work presents a case study, containing the diagnosis of reverse logistics of the solid wastes existing in Ituiutaba (MG). It includes the main residues, who are the biggest collectors and buyers and which is the way taken by the residues. It still presents, a pro-active model for its environmental management. Model this, that induces the capacity to think, to project and to foresee a better future for the society of what is lived deeply today in the city. The qualitative analysis of the domiciliary residues disclosed the presence of 70% in weight of decaing organic substance. Five aspects are identified: costs of Iandfill maintenance , non senses, technique imperfections, administrative problems and lack of equipment in the current model of reverse logistics. There is a new perspective for the city of Ituiutaba (MG) to give a leap in order to improve its efficiency in environmental management. The way for the efficiency of the management of the residues is demonstrated, which must have as main precursor the municipal public power. So that the model can have effectiveness it will have to count on the support of the population, which will have to be informed of the new the proposal of reverse logistics for the urban residues. In relation to the compost produced from the humid residues, it can be evidenced that its composition presents good potential of use for production of varied plants and vegetables for presenting a good constitution of macro and micron nutrients. In relation to the balance of mass in the pro-active model there is a perspective of a shunting line of the residues from the landfills much bigger than nowadays. That is, the ambient reintegration of the residues makes a leap from current 19% to 82,8% in the proactive model of reverse logistics. This way it is possible to see a new age in the management of the solid residues for the city of Ituiutaba supported in reverse logistics. With the adoption of the pro-active model the municipal landfill will have to be used less for the covering and compacting of the recycleable residues and unwanted matter and more for the composting of the perishable organic residues. This way it is possible to prolong the useful life of the landfill, from 24 years to 99 years, with drastic reduction in the leachate generation. Soon, the study of the reverse logistics of the residues is a contribution to subsidize the city hall in the management of the solid residues, also serving, to increase the conscience of the population on the necessity of its participation in the discarding process and reusage of solid residues.

Arts in action: a public arena for art: the practical, functional and social implications of art within a cultural context with specific reference to South Africa

Ross, Wendy 30 November 2005 (has links)
The research is based on the belief that the Earth's survival is reliant on an understanding of the interconnectedness between people and the planet. The premise that creative expression is an inherent need in human beings and a powerful agent for social change is at the core of this study. The arts permeate all aspects of life and can play a positive pro-active role in economic and social upliftment. The study therefore explored a contemporary public context in which artists intervene in society to provide practical and functional social spaces but also, with the ecological crisis of the planet, to create an awareness of the interconnectedness of life. Place-making was of specific concern and one of the aims was to examine ways of re-shaping the appearance and meaning of public spaces. An equally important issue was the role and responsibility of both the artist and the commissioning process in a social context and the relevance of individual expression as modes of addressing social concerns and as a tool of public empowerment within a new democratic South Africa that can have a genuine impact on community well-being and social inclusion. The research therefore exists in between the arts, social sciences and the ecology of place: that is, the understanding of the role of creative intervention within social spaces. The study provides a historical context and development of new trends in public and collaborative community arts, contextualises the notion of public and argues for a repositioning of assessment criteria for the arts within a social public domain and in the interest of the people. It is based on a critical survey of international collaborative arts and its potential as a guide to alternative solutions and implementation within a South African context for creative interventions and regeneration of public spaces and empowerment and capacity building of its citizens. The research discusses the relevance and the position of the arts and craft industry as a means of poverty alleviation, job creation and empowerment in South Africa. Rebuilding community demands both the rejuvenation of social spaces and the restoration of community esteem together with mutual and self-respect. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D.
