Changing Context Of Olympic Victor Statues In Greece And Rome

Koseoglu, Ayca 01 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the standing of Olympic victor statues in Greece and Rome. The major focus is on how the meaning and the perception of the statues become transformed in different contexts. Throughout the study the reception alongside the location and meaning of athletic sculpture are primary points of concern. The standing of the patron and the viewer with respect to transformed models and their perception in relation to context constitute a significant part while formal details of artistic creativity and workmanship are dealt with only as necessary. It is known that Roman victor sculptures go back to Greek models / however remarkable change is revealed in the context and meaning of display &ndash / such as the emergence of statues for the decoration of private villas or public baths &ndash / rather than major stylistic changes in the statues themselves. So, the goal of the study is to understand how the Romans looked to the past and to Greeks in particular. An attempt is made to understand how Romans used their own values to appropriate and transform earlier Greek models, by focusing especially on the display and context.

Crit?rios de inser??o do discurso religioso na esfera p?blica, no contexto das democracias p?s-seculares, segundo J?rgen Habermas / Concepts for insertion of religious discourse in the public sphere, in the post-secular democracies context, according to J?rgen Habermas

No. of bitstreams: 1 DIEGO IN?CIO FERNANDES VASCONCELLOS.pdf: 1190154 bytes, checksum: ff8200d9d093bae59aa2f1ccbb16ca04 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-21 / The paper presents an examination of the concept of the public sphere and its relation to the reasoned discourse of religious confessions, from the perspective of the philosopher J?rgen Habermas, in a post-secular context. In the first chapter, we try to reconstruct the concept of the public sphere and its importance for the democratic rule of law. It is argued in favor of a concept of the public sphere that meets the demands of the post-secular liberal state, open to the confessional perspectives, but without dispensing with them. In the second chapter, we seek to identify some peculiarities of religious discourse that allow it to appear among the voices that make up plurality, as opposed to those that make it unfeasible in public contexts. The third chapter seeks to explain some criteria that guide the validation of religious perspectives when inserted in the public sphere. Finally, we intend to consider the secular / post-secular process that implies the repositioning of religion before the spheres of life and the system. It is argued that the displacement of the value-axis, provided by the anthropological reversal advocated by the Enlightenment tradition, left open the question of religion for the individual, whose revaluation reaches the present times.

Pouvoir et sensibilité à l'influence normative : études expérimentales des effets du pouvoir et du contexte sur le rapport des individus à la norme / Social power and sensitivity to normative influence : experimental studies of the effects of power and context on individual conduct toward social norm

Degraeve, Béatrice 27 November 2015 (has links)
This work investigates the impact of social power and private or public context on normative influence. We defend the thesis according to which the context (private vs. public) regulates the effects of power on normative influence. In a first series of research, we tested the hypothesis that the possession of power, by generating disinhibition, would make individuals less sensitive to social norms. Two studies are presented and show that the possession of power causes less normative behaviors as well as less socially desirable self-presentations. In a second series of research, we argue that high power primed individuals would exhibit greater disinhibition in private and greater inhibition in public than low power primed individuals. Two studies were conducted and tend to support this idea. A last study examined social responsibility as a potential moderator of the effects of social power and context on normative influence. However, it seems that social responsibility does not mediates the inhibition and disinhibition patterns we observe. Overall, these studies help to clarify the paradoxical effects of power underlined in the literature, by proposing a model which allows to understand how the context generates different processes depending on social power, when disinhibition and inhibition are likely to occur, and what are the consequences for individual behavior.

Undanhåller jag det jag egentligen tycker? : En kvantitativ studie om individers grundläggande värderingar och upplevd yttrandefrihet i olika sociala sammanhang / Am I withholding what I really think? : A quantitative study of individuals' basic values and perceived freedom of expression in different social contexts

Wallgren, Denise, Ottosson, Linn January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the individual's basic values affected the individual´s limitations in freedom of expression. In order to present basic values, the study is bases on Schwart´s theory. The values examined were conservativeand openness to change. The authors also investigated whether there was any difference in limited freedom of expression in the people who reconciled more or less with the different values, in a Swedish context. Previous research announced that politically conservative people feel more restricted than people who are open to change. The sample in the study consisted of individuals over the age of 18 who had voted in the last parliamentary election in 2022, there were a total of 155 respondents who answered the survey. The survey was published on the Facebook platform. The data analysis method that was performed was a simple linear regression analysis to examine how fundamental values affect restrictions on freedom of expression. The study's results show that conservatives feel limited in their freedom of expression in all environments, which also agreed with previous research.

Arts in action: a public arena for art: the practical, functional and social implications of art within a cultural context with specific reference to South Africa

Ross, Wendy 30 November 2005 (has links)
The research is based on the belief that the Earth's survival is reliant on an understanding of the interconnectedness between people and the planet. The premise that creative expression is an inherent need in human beings and a powerful agent for social change is at the core of this study. The arts permeate all aspects of life and can play a positive pro-active role in economic and social upliftment. The study therefore explored a contemporary public context in which artists intervene in society to provide practical and functional social spaces but also, with the ecological crisis of the planet, to create an awareness of the interconnectedness of life. Place-making was of specific concern and one of the aims was to examine ways of re-shaping the appearance and meaning of public spaces. An equally important issue was the role and responsibility of both the artist and the commissioning process in a social context and the relevance of individual expression as modes of addressing social concerns and as a tool of public empowerment within a new democratic South Africa that can have a genuine impact on community well-being and social inclusion. The research therefore exists in between the arts, social sciences and the ecology of place: that is, the understanding of the role of creative intervention within social spaces. The study provides a historical context and development of new trends in public and collaborative community arts, contextualises the notion of public and argues for a repositioning of assessment criteria for the arts within a social public domain and in the interest of the people. It is based on a critical survey of international collaborative arts and its potential as a guide to alternative solutions and implementation within a South African context for creative interventions and regeneration of public spaces and empowerment and capacity building of its citizens. The research discusses the relevance and the position of the arts and craft industry as a means of poverty alleviation, job creation and empowerment in South Africa. Rebuilding community demands both the rejuvenation of social spaces and the restoration of community esteem together with mutual and self-respect. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D.
