Perceptions of professionalism: a case study of community college baccalaureate faculty

Unknown Date (has links)
This case study analyzed the perceptions of professionalism among an emerging and distinct occupational sector of community college faculty: community college faculty who teach in baccalaureate programs. The research was designed to address three questions as to the experiences of Community College Baccalaureate (CCB) faculty. First, what are the perceptions of professionalism among the community college faculty who teach in the baccalaureate programs at a multi-campus community college in the state of Florida (herein referred to as Seaside College)? Specifically, what patterns emerged when faculty perceptions of professional identity were examined, first, under the lens of professionalism as established by Larson (1977) and, second, through Boyer's (1990) four domains of scholarship? Second, are these faculty perceptions different from their previously held perceptions prior to the college's expansion into baccalaureate instruction? Third, were there any noticeable differences in faculty perceptions about the individual baccalaureate areas across this college? / by Jeffrey Peter Nasse. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Based on the above findings, the researcher has the following suggestions: (1) The use of therapeutic settings and therapeutic relationships in working with clients should be strengthened in education and continuous professional training for Chinese psychotherapists, especially to those who do not have educational background in medical science. Simultaneously, it is important to enhance the reflectivity of Chinese psychotherapists on their work and life experience. (2) To emphasize the legitimacy of psychotherapy in China, we have to regulate the norms of the profession according to the professional Code. Further, the principle of "do no harm" should be given higher priority in psychotherapy, psychotherapist need to cope with the demands from reality using wisdom and reason, pay attention to the affective needs of clients and promote social justice. (3) In the development of psychotherapy in mainland China, special efforts should be made to preserve the positive elements in traditional Chinese culture for the helping professions, keeping a balance between technical rationality and humane concern. We should pay attention to the goals of enhancing individual development, respect for diversity and importance of equality in practice as well as utilize the Chinese tradition and culture in helping clients to develop compassion, having empathetic understanding on the needs of one another. The purpose of doing so is to develop a new culture valuing compassion and reason in relating to one another. / The major findings of this research are as follows. (1) The understanding on the role of the therapeutic settings by the therapists are different. In comparison, those with training in psychoanalysis tend to attach more importance on the role of therapeutic settings than those who do not have such training. (2) The mainland psychotherapists still emphasis the importance of affection in relating with clients, using special rather than standard treatment for particular clients, which may result from the "differential distance in interpersonal relationship" dominant in Chinese culture. (3) Professional ethics for communities of counseling practice is newly introduced into mainland China, and people are beginning to pay attention to its relevant ethics. Its development, however, is still in infancy stage. (4) The mainland Chinese psychotherapists emphasis more on building relationship with people than developing technical skills in psychotherapy. This may be related to the fact that Chinese culture attaches more importance to interpersonal relationships. / This research attempts to answer the following questions: (1) What are the understanding of mainland Chinese psychotherapists about the meaning of professional ethics and therapeutic relationships? (2) How do they establish therapeutic relationships with their clients? (3) Are there any patterns in their establishment of therapeutic relationships, and how they interpret these patterns? (4) In their views, what are the principles and main points in establishing a healthy therapeutic relationship? / This study has implications for the helping professions in mainland China that it reveals the experiences, feelings and cognition of some mainland Chinese psychotherapists in their embodied professional ethical norms and therapeutic relationships. It illustrates the characteristics of these psychotherapists in dealing with professional relationships in a country which still values relationships and human feelings. The study also examines the factors that have influenced these psychotherapists in the development of their characteristics, e.g. the country's history, modern cultural atmosphere, and the ordinary people's routine styles of interpersonal exchange in China. The findings of this study, as a preliminary exploration of the process of establishing ethical norms and principles in mainland China, would be helpful to the development of social work in mainland China. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) / This study is significant as it is the first qualitative inquiry of the therapeutic relationships between clients and psychotherapists in mainland China. It explores the the impact of Chinese cultural tradition and modern social development on the mentality of mainland Chinese psychotherapists. / Using social constructivism as the epistemological frame, ecological systems theory is chosen as the theoretical framework in conducting the study using qualitative research. In-depth interviews and on-site observations are the methods chosen to collect data. The main source of data comes from in-depth interviews with 15 psychotherapists in different institutes located in four cities in mainland China. Through careful analysis of the data, thick description is used to describe the data. Teachers' lives and struggles in a context of education reforms. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2005 (has links)
Hong Kong educational system has faced drastic changes. In the past few years, there are various reform policies being implemented in view of the changes and needs in the new global economy. Grounded in the perspective of symbolic interactionism, the present life histories research studies the transformation of secondary school teachers' lives in the local context of education reforms, from 1997 to 2005. The results reveal how teachers narrate the teaching profession as pilgrimage, which explains the formation of the moral identity and the frame of reference of the practitioners. Teachers treasure humanistic values, believe in development of young people through "life-to-life" long-term interaction, and trust in emancipation through education that delivers knowledge, fosters civic development and personal growth. However, in the context of education reforms dominated by the neoliberal, managerial and performativity discourse, the pilgrimage and its heritage have been threatened. The meso context, including the leadership style of principals and the organizational relationship among teachers, has impact on teachers comparable to that of the macro context of education reforms. It is through the meso context that education reforms are mediated, or distorted, in school level. Ontological narratives of teachers have become fragmented, as their character is being corroded in a context of education reforms and school culture that revitalize and redefine professional identity under the hegemonic discourse. Teachers engage in a reflexive project, which is a dynamic interaction of the self and the social context, with a role to be played by self-conscious emotions. Discussions would be made on the need for rebuilding the narrative identity of the teaching profession, together with the implications on implementation of education reforms in the local context. / Ho Yuk Fan. / "May 2005." / Adviser: Tsang Wing Kwong. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: A, page: 2526. / Thesis (Ed.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 381-394). / Electronic reproduction. Midwives's perception of ethical behaviour and professional malpractice in the labour units of Tshwane, Gauteng Province, South Africa

Mashigo, Manare Margaret 09 1900 (has links)
Aim: The purpose of this study is to establish midwives’ perception of ethical and professional malpractices in labour units and to enhance the awareness of ethical behaviour and professional practice by midwives. Design: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and cross sectional design was followed to explore the midwives understanding of and experiences of ethical practice and professional malpractices in Labour Units of Tshwane, Gauteng Province. A non-probability purposive sampling was used to draw a sample from midwives with two or more years of experience working in Labour Units. Data collection: Individual in-depth interviews using open ended questions were used to collect data. Interviews were recorded using an audio tape recorder, which was later transcribed verbatim. Data collection was continuous until saturation was reached with the eight (n=8) participant. Findings: the results of the study revealed that midwives do understand the ethical code of conduct. However, due to challenges such as shortage of staff; shortage of material resources; non-compliance of midwives to policies and guidelines; fear of decision-making; and lack of management support, all this makes ethical conduct more challenging. It is hoped that the findings of this research will make contributions to midwifery training and practice. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Relevance of the Swaziland teacher education curricula to professional ethics regarding teacher-pupil relationships

Simelane, Jenneth Futhie 02 1900 (has links)
Education in Swaziland is faced with the challenge of degenerating professional standards among teachers. This study sought to determine the relevance of the current teacher training curriculum in preparing pre-service teachers on professional ethics regarding teacher-pupil relationships. The study’s participants were from two universities; University of Swaziland (UNISWA) and Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU), and three teacher-training colleges; William Pitcher, Ngwane, and Swaziland College of Technology. Participants comprised five purposefully selected heads of education departments, five focus groups of eight final year student teachers randomly selected from each institution, 100 new teachers with less than five years teaching experience (graduates) from the participating teacher training institutions. Data were collected concurrently using a semi-structured interview for the heads of department, focus group interviews for student teachers, a questionnaire for new teachers and document analysis for collecting data from documents of the institutions. Instruments were pilot tested on samples with similar characteristics to those of the participants. Data analysis was guided by the research questions. Qualitative data from the interviews and focus group interviews were analysed inductively, presented narratively through the use of verbatim quotations. Content analysis was used to analyse data from the documents and presented similarly to that from interviews. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics such as means, frequencies and percentages using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20. Findings of the study revealed that the extent to which teacher training institutions implemented professional ethics regarding teacher-pupil relationships was not as adequate as it should, in terms of content and methods of implementation. The teacher training institutions generally offered professional ethics not as a course but as part of a course or courses. Therefore, the study recommended that the curricula in teacher training institutions should incorporate a course specific to ethics of the teaching profession. A further study on challenges faced by teacher training institutions in the implementation of the curriculum on professional ethics is necessary. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Ed. Who cares? : moral reflections on business in healthcare

Esser, Jan Hendrik 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This evaluation serves the purpose of illuminating concepts and ideas behind the moral impact of business values in healthcare and to establish a framework for the analysis of moral dilemmas found in the sphere ofbio-medical ethics. The historic developments of business in healthcare are examined, looking at how and why business became an integral part of the health care system. The concept of "managed healthcare" is introduced and used as the context in which the different institutional role-players are brought together. Managed healthcare is defined by a discussion of the different organisational structures through which it manifests itself. The policies, procedures and regulations that managed healthcare organisations implement and control to fulfil their general function are also examined. Some normative aspects pertaining to the concept of managed health care are explored, including the institutional values of business and that of medicine. A brief discussion of the economic system in which the business agents or role players function are included in the evaluation of the institutional values of business. Further arguments are made to show how the healthcare system with all its role players displays the characteristics of a complex system. Discussions on the fundamental values of medicine concentrate on the basic ideas behind virtues and principles of medical ethics. It is argued that the development of these virtues and principles are important foundations on which the medical profession stands. The moral impact of combining these institutional values within the context of managed healthcare relationships is examined and some important moral dilemmas or conflicts are identified. It is further argued that the fundamental relationships between all the role players in the health care system have changed as all the agents function within a complex system, giving rise to new organisational structures and relationships, with new conceptual roles, ideals, values and practices.

The study of the perception gaps of professional ethics between certified public accountants and lawyers

劉子珈, Liu, Tze Chia Unknown Date (has links)
The main purposes of this study were to explore the ethical perception gaps of professional ethics between Certified Public Accountants and Lawyers. This research uses multidimensional ethics scale as a measurement of moral judgments with four dilemmas, then uses the method of questionnaire survey with participants in some accounting firms and law firms. There are 194 samples retrieved, and 174 effective samples. The data is analyzed by using the method of descriptive statistics, t-test, Spearman’s correlation. The findings of the study revealed that the perception gaps of independence for accountants and avoiding the conflicts of interests for lawyers are significant, and the perception gaps of confidentiality are insignificant. This might be resulted from the particularity of these two professions. As a result, this study is recommendable for practicing field, educators, and future researcher as reference materials.
