Teacher Attitude and Self-Efficacy Differences Regarding English Language Learners and Disabled Learners.

Carballo, Miriam 16 November 2018 (has links)
There has been little research combining both groups of students who were English Language Learners (ELLs) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students in relation to teacher attitudes and self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to compare teacher attitudes and self-efficacy related to instructing either ELLs with or without disabilities in elementary schools Teachers from six elementary schools in the XYZ Excellence School District participated in a 52-item comprehensive survey. Two questionnaires and the demographic form were combined to create one comprehensive questionnaire totaling 52 questions for the purposes of this study. Teachers were solicited to participate in the study by email, which generated 92 responses for analysis. The results of this study indicated there were no significant differences between the perceptions of individuals when instructing English Language Learners (ELLs) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. If people feel confident teaching ELLs, they probably feel confident teaching ESE. Equally, if they do not feel confident teaching ESE students, they are more than likely to not feel comfortable teaching ELLs. Thus, there were no significant differences between beliefs and attitudes in both groups. Still, data gathered from the regression analysis demonstrated training in ELL and ESE were strong indicators regardless of which other variables were added to teacher attitudes and self-efficacy when instructing ELLS or students with or without disabilities. The results of this study also indicated teachers felt they needed additional training in special education and communication was the greatest barrier between teacher and students, since many teachers could not speak Spanish and students could not comprehend or speak English very well. The results also indicated some teachers felt resources available to them in teaching a lesson were a positive component for ELLs, with or without disabilities, to be able to grasp content. The findings from this study could serve as positive change for reform of a multi-culturally and diverse climate in public schools. States, school districts, and on-site school administrators could support teachers by creating professional development programs in the learning of learning profiles, preferences, interests, and readiness proficiency levels are essential to multicultural diverse education. The states could also encourage these actions by restructuring certification policies recognizing multicultural diverse education.

Predebon, Flaviane January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is constituted by a qualitative research in the field of Physics and Mathematics teachers‘ education, regarding the Federal Institutes of Science, Education and Technology - IF. In these terms, it is a case study that spanned three fronts. The first one was related to institutional intentions and legal propositions on the characteristics and profiles of Physics and Mathematics teachers graduated in the context of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina - IFC Campus Concórdia. The second one aggregated an investigation on the regional environment and scope of the institution, providing information on the professional teaching reality in high schools (professional market), through the application of instruments (questionnaires) to teachers and principals and also trying to clarify requirements about teaching in those school units. The third front engaged in understanding the concepts and practices of future licentiate degree teachers at IFC Campus Concordia, through analysis arising from applied materials (questionnaires) and written productions (internship reports) of students and educators. The problem and the aim were led to respond if, at the end of the licentiate degree, the concepts and practices of future teachers were in agreement or not with the characteristics described in the institutional theory and, at the same time, if they reflected the professional profile aimed by the market. The research was initiated in March 2012, being its organization designed in the perspective of five different stages developed over eight semesters, which aggregated the Doctoral degree and taking document and discursive textual analysis as methodologies for data processing. The first front demarcated principles for teachers‘ education in the IFs, which were found to agree with the base framework theory and served as categories of analysis and classification of data and information coming from other investigated spheres. The investigation about the teaching professional market demonstrated that the biggest problems affecting high schools rely on the physical structure, materials, working conditions and education of professionals who teach there, also showing shortcomings regarding teachers‘ features required nowadays. The teacher's profile, since the third front research, raised a milestone of analysis on the educational adequacy of the subjects, demonstrating strong and weak points of each of the licentiate degrees involved. The literature reviews and milestones of analysis gave foundation to the defense of arguments about a theory on the nature and formation of teachers‘ knowledge, providing proximity to the results facing "investigative emergencies" marked on each analysis Section of this study.

Configuração do trabalho docente e a instrução primária em Sergipe no século XIX (1827-1880)

Amorim, Simone Silveira 30 March 2012 (has links)
This thesis has as its objective to analyse the get starting process of the Primary Instruction in the 19th century as for teaching laws and the press, having as perspective the professional teaching configuration movement, analysing the representations and experiences of the agents involved in this process in Sergipe. The analitical cathegories of Pierre Bourdieu (1960), Norbert Elias (1990, 2011), Roger Chartier (2002) helped understand how the teaching profession got organized and its representations related to the elementary school teaching and how the professional habitus settled down thought to the project of Brazil as a nation, inside a civilized process. This research was composed based on the theoretical basis of the Cultural History, therefore, the newspapers from Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Sergipe and from Instituto Tobias Barreto were researched; the official mail exchanged by the teachers and the State and its agents, records of Diretoria da Instrução Pública and the teaching coordinators, the students frequency maps, the educational Laws at that time found at Arquivo Público de Sergipe were researched as well. In the first chapter, the institutionalization process of the school and of the teaching profession configuration was analyzed thru the Laws, as well as the importance of Normal School in the process of institutionalization of elementary teachers graduation. The second chapter has the objective to identify the strategies used by the intellectual and political elite to convince the sergipana literated population that the Public Instruction in Sergipe was under development and according to what was updated at that time, that´s why disputes in the teaching field were also studied thru newspapers. This analysis is done based on the speeches performed at Assembleia Provincial Sergipana and on the Public Instruction Reports published in the newspapers, as well as on newspapers ads about instruction and education. Having the goal to understand how the seek for being legitimated was accomplished by the teachers and also the representation they wanted to reach before the sergipana society, aspects related to exams and students exams published in newspapers were discussed. The school maps were also analyzed in order to know the elementary school students profile. Newspaper ads and commercials (teachers, private institutions, among others) were also objective of analyses in the third chapter. It is possible to conclude that the teaching profession was built among advances and withdrawers throughout the laws proposed by the State as it brought to itself the responsibility to change Brazil into a nation. It was possible to get that the elementary school teachers made some effort to legitimate the relationship with the population and with the local teaching authorities, in a strategic way, especially by the press and official mails.

Approche instrumentale de l'activité d'enseignement en sciences et techniques des agroéquipements : le cas d'une formation professionnelle agricole / Instrumental approach in the teaching of agri-sciences and techniques : a case study in agricultural professional training

Gillet, Guillaume 21 November 2014 (has links)
This University thesis looks into the work done by teachers in Agri-Sciences and Techniques: how a "sound agricultural practice" is transmitted in a vocational teaching situation. Its aim is to grasp the organisation of the teaching activity in a particularly discretionary context and in various fluctuating situations. The conceptual framework used for this research is at the intersection of Professional Teaching Practice and an extended instrumental approach. The analytical work is based on tangible teaching practices as they were expressed, and takes into account the symbolic dimension of the device used by the teacher. As it bears on one technical element, the observation of the teachers’ activity makes it possible to highlight the various ways they make use of the chosen devices. The results analysis is based on the concept of invariance (both of the subject and the situation), as it was expected from the teacher’s range of devices and also dialectic relation between the concepts of "empowerment" and "self-accomplishment". The variations can be explained by the active process of the person’s identity construction, proceeding from the feeling of personal sense, a feeling each time unique and incessantly renewed: the teacher’s knowledge and cognition, as it is mustered through the devices used, appear to be closely linked to a form of "re-cognition", leading to varied teaching styles. From a more general point of view, the results verify the model of a "teaching person", as it was propositioned in the theoretical framework; it gives the global teaching act a broader meaning that reaches beyond language.

An Historical Analysis of the Development of National Board Certification Stipends in Virginia

Alday, Kerry N. 27 April 2011 (has links)
This study examines the historical evolution and legislative valuation of the National Teacher Certification Incentive Reward Program and Fund in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This fund offers stipends to teachers who earn National Board Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. This research project included three steps of data collection. First, the legislative history of Virginia's National Teacher Certification Incentive Reward Program and Fund, which covered the General Assembly Session in 1999, was reviewed. The second step was open-ended interviews with legislators and a representative from the Virginia Education Association who participated in the creation of the "Fund." The third step was to collect and report the incentives that are offered by the local education agencies for teachers who earn National Board Certification. The study reported that the initial plan devised by the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy in the report, A Nation Prepared (1986) that National Board Certification was not implemented with fidelity in the Commonwealth of Virginia, according to the intended design when it pertained to both how to strategically use the skills of NBCTs and how to ensure NBCTs are working with the students most in need of help. As supported by the interview data, the study shows those interviewed value great teachers and are willing to support them with financial incentives. / Ed. D.

Effects of national board certification on retention of teachers in the classroom

Unknown Date (has links)
This study probes the impact that the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification process has on teachers, schools, and school districts. In particular the study provides research to determine if National Board Certification significantly affects teachers staying in the classrooms as full time teachers. The NBPTS process is explored to better understand the background of the endeavor and how it may thereby assist in promoting teacher retention and whether this concept is being realized. The history of leadership is also explored and discussed as it pertains to education and the NBPTS process. Beyond researching the relationship between National Board Certification and teachers leaving the classroom as full time teachers, this study also sought to determine if ethnicity (Black, White, Hispanic or Other) and/or gender were statistically significant moderators of this relationship. Of the total number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) who completed the survey (N=220), 22 participants reported that they were not teaching full time in the classroom at the time of this study. Of the total number of teachers who had not obtained NBC (general education teachers or GETs) who completed the survey (N=110), 28 participants reported that they were not teaching full time in the classroom at the time of this study. The results from this study indicate that GETs left the classroom as full time teachers, while remaining employed with the Broward School Board, at more than twice the rate of NBCTs. / by Lewis Jackson. / Thesis (Ed.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.
