How Bilingual Counselors Experience Sense of Professional Self

The United States is in the process of changing demographically. As a result, there is an increasing demand for culturally appropriate counseling services for minority groups. However, little research about counselors' ability to deal with issues stemming from bilingualism is available. As language is used to establish the relationship in counseling, the importance of counselors' understanding regarding how a second language may influence the counseling process is vital. Although numerous studies have thus far emphasized the significance of cultural knowledge and the need for bilingual counseling services, culturally diverse populations continue to be underserved due to language barriers (Gushue, Constantine, and Sciarra, 2008). The American Counseling Association's (ACA) Code of Ethics (2005; 2014) provides best-practice guidelines for appropriate bilingual support during the counseling session. However, few studies have explored the role played by a second or additional language during the counseling session (Marcos and Urcuyo, 1979; Oquendo, 1996; Ramos-Sanchez, 2009; Santiago-Rivera, Altarriba, Poll, Gonzalez-Miller, and Cragun, 2009; Tehrani and Vaughan, 2009). This study adds to the existing body of knowledge about bilingual counselors' experiences providing counseling services in a language in which they have not had professional training. Chapter One provides an overview of the problem, Chapter Two delivers an in-depth literature review, Chapter Three describes the methodology, Chapter Four provides findings of the study, and Chapter Five discusses the results and offers implications for bilingual counselors and counselor educators and supervisors as well as makes suggestions for further research. / Ph. Facets of mindfulness in health professionals and patient adjustment to cancer

Systematic Review: Healthcare professionals work in highly emotive environments and are considered to be at high risk of developing burnout due to the nature of their roles. There has been increased interest in applying mindfulness-based interventions for stress reduction in healthcare professionals. Previous reviews have tended to include a heterogeneous mix of patients, healthcare students and healthcare professionals. The inherent differences in these roles limits the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for healthcare professionals. The current review aimed to address this gap in knowledge by reviewing mindfulness-based interventions specifically for healthcare professionals. Eight studies were included in the review. It was concluded that despite some methodological weaknesses there was promising evidence of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in reducing stress and improving well-being particularly when baseline levels of stress were high. The evidence in support of reducing burnout was less conclusive. Future studies employing larger samples using active controls and longitudinal designs will provide valuable information on the long-term efficacy of these interventions. Empirical Research Study: Several studies have identified psychological adjustment as one of the most important factors correlating with psychological distress and quality of life in people with cancer. Identifying ways to promote positive adjustment to cancer is an important goal in helping to alleviate distress and improve quality of life for this client group. This can be facilitated by identifying robust predictors of distress. Previous studies have identified a number of useful predictors, such as coping styles and psychological adjustment styles. The current study aimed to explore the predictive power of two newer constructs aligned to mindfulness-based processes: self-compassion and cognitive fusion - in determining adjustment to cancer. 114 adults with various cancer diagnoses completed the Mini Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale, Brief COPE, the Self-Compassion Scale, Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire; and two outcome measures: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Functional Analysis of Cancer Therapy – General. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to explore relationships between predictor variables: mental adjustment, coping style, self-compassion and cognitive fusion, and outcome variables: distress and quality of life. Results showed that a known predictor, emotional avoidance coping and the newer construct, cognitive fusion were significant predictors of distress over and above other known predictors. Emotional avoidance coping was the only significant predictor of quality of life over and above known predictors and the newer constructs under examination. Self-compassion did not account for any significant incremental variance in distress or quality of life after controlling for other known predictors. The results of this study indicate that interventions focused on reducing cognitive fusion and emotional avoidance are warranted and potentially beneficial in reducing distress in this population.

In the present-time society, where constant and intensive changes of life take place, where the idea of lifelong learning is being focused on, educational systems as well as the situation of school’s and pedagogues’ activities are undergoing changes. The significance of teachers’ constant up-dating increases; not the finite knowledge but the ability to constantly learn, improve one’s personality and professional skills become the main feature of professional mastery. Exactly this is the point towards which the system which is being formed at the moment for improvement of pedagogues is oriented in order to provide conditions for every teacher to constantly improve one’s own competency; it also reduces the gap between institutions training pedagogues and schools which undergo changes. Training of music teachers who are able to effectively strive for aims of musical education always has been among the most topical and problematic issues; that is why a special role falls on lifelong professional improvement of music teachers themselves. Paths of Becoming: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Inquiry Into Teacher Candidate Professional Self-Understanding

An extensive body of educational literature examines the process and implications of how an individual becomes a teacher, but studies within this field often minimize or ignore the existential nature of this act of becoming. Something happens to the individual as they enter into the teaching profession and commence their teaching practice and in many educational jurisdictions, those happenings are left for the novice teacher to grapple with in isolation. This study presents interpretations of four teacher candidates’ sense of becoming and provides a meta-analysis of important existential themes arising from examinations of the participants’ professional self-understanding. This study engages with the concept of existential becoming in teacher candidates through a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to interpretation and understanding. Four teacher candidates, about to enter their final teaching practicum before graduating from an eight-month Bachelor of Education program as certified teachers, participated in this research project which included one-on-one interviews, journal analysis and focus groups. Interpretations of these teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming a teacher are organized by Kelchtermans’ professional self-understanding framework and presented through the use of poetic vignettes and images of the teacher candidates’ paths of becoming. These aesthetic representations of teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming offer an alternative and existentially-informed vehicle for teacher candidate reflection and professional self-understanding. Data analysis and hermeneutic interpretations among and between the researcher and the participants revealed a number of existential themes present in the teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming a teacher, including: fear, responsibility, authenticity, purpose, and the self. Each theme is examined via a connection to both existential and teacher education literature and implications for teacher education programs are discussed.

Šiame darbe analizuojama profesinės savižinos gilinimo reikšmė psichikos sveikatos priežiūros srities socialinių darbuotojų kasdieninėje veikloje ir jų profesiniam tobulėjimui. Pagrindiniai tyrimo tikslai – išsiaiškinti, kokią reikšmę psichikos sveikatos priežiūros paslaugas teikiantys socialiniai darbuotojai skiria asmeninei profesinei savižinai, kiek jie yra įsitraukę į jos gilinimą. Tyrimo metodai: I. Mokslinės literatūros, mokslinių tyrimų analizė, siekiant išsiaiškinti, kas veikia žmogaus profesinę orientaciją ir motyvaciją, kas gali jam padėti „pažinti save“ ir kodėl tai svarbu siekiant asmeninio profesinio augimo. II. Kiekybinis tyrimo metodas pasirinktas, siekiant empyriškai patvirtinti ar atmesti prieš tyrimą išsikeltas hipotezes. Vykdyta anketinė apklausa. III. Kokybiniu tyrimo metodu buvo siekiama papildyti anketinės apklausos metu gautą informaciją. Naudojant pusiau struktūruoto interviu metodą, gautas išsamesnis profesinės savižinos gilinimo reikšmės socialiniame darbe supratimas. Respondentai galėjo išsakyti nuomonę apie tai, kas jiems trukdo naudoti profesinės savižinos gilinimo metodus, kokios priežastys lemia susidomėjimą jais, kokią socialinio darbo ateities viziją jie turi ir kt. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by a persistent, frequent and severe pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity or impulsivity. Although ADHD is chronic and interferes in several contexts of life, there are people with the disorder who can join higher education and be successful. Researchers have investigated ADHD repercussions for college experience, however, they have explained neither which dimensions of college adjustment (personal, interpersonal, study, career, and institutional) suffer greater influence by ADHD symptoms, nor if the symptoms may affect professional self-efficacy of college students. This research was divided into two studies. The first study aimed to perform a systematic review of literature about ADHD implications for college experience, highlighting the similarities and differences between students with and without the disorder concerning academic context. Students with and without ADHD are likely to present no difference regarding self-concept and psychological well-being, although they differ from each other when it comes to college adjustment and concern with academic performance. The second study aimed to test a theoretical model through path analysis, in which dimensions of college adjustment mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and professional self-efficacy. The participants were 510 college students from 12 courses of two public universities in Rio Grande do Sul. Data were gathered through a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS), the Academic Experiences Questionnaire reduced version (AEQ-r), and the Professional Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES). We verified that physical and psychological well-being and the establishment of a social support network may reduce the potential damages to professional self-efficacy due to the symptoms of the disorder. Implications of these results for academic routine and clinical practice are discussed in the end of the thesis. / O Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade (TDAH) é caracterizado por um padrão persistente, frequente e grave de desatenção e/ou hiperatividade ou impulsividade. Embora o TDAH seja crônico e interfira em diversos contextos de vida, há indivíduos com o transtorno que ingressam no ensino superior e conseguem ser bem sucedidos. Pesquisadores têm se dedicado a investigar as possíveis repercussões do TDAH no contexto universitário, mas não esclarecem quais dimensões da adaptação acadêmica (pessoal, interpessoal, estudo, carreira ou institucional) sofrem maior interferência dos sintomas do TDAH, nem se os mesmos podem afetar as crenças dos universitários sobre autoeficácia profissional. Essa pesquisa foi dividida em dois estudos. O primeiro estudo busca realizar uma revisão sistemática de literatura sobre as implicações do TDAH durante a graduação, com destaque para as semelhanças e diferenças entre os estudantes com e sem o transtorno no que se refere ao contexto acadêmico. Os jovens com e sem TDAH tendem a ser semelhantes no que se refere ao autoconceito, ao bem-estar psicológico, à satisfação com a vida social no início da graduação, e diferentes quanto à adaptação acadêmica e às preocupações com o desempenho. O segundo estudo procura testar, via path analysis, um modelo teórico em que dimensões da adaptação acadêmica medeiam a relação entre sintomas do TDAH e autoeficácia profissional. Participaram do estudo 510 estudantes universitários de 12 cursos de duas universidades públicas do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. A coleta dos dados foi realizada através de um questionário sociodemográfico, do Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS), do Questionário de Vivências Acadêmicas Versão Reduzida (QVA-r) e da Escala de Autoeficácia Profissional (EAP). Verificou-se que o possível impacto dos sintomas de desatenção/hiperatividade na autoeficácia profissional pode ser minimizado pelo bem-estar físico e psicológico e pela rede de apoio social do estudante universitário. Implicações dos resultados para a rotina acadêmica e para a prática clínica são discutidas ao final da dissertação.

Объектом исследования явилась профессиональное самоопределение подростков 8-х, 9-х классов, в возрасте 14-16 лет. Предметом исследования стали эннеатипы личности и профессиональное самоопределение подростков. Магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка литературы (69 источников) и приложения, включающего в себя бланки применявшихся методик. Объем магистерской диссертации 93 страницы, на которых размещены 18 рисунков и 7 таблиц. Во введении раскрывается актуальность проблемы исследования, разработанность проблематики, ставятся цель и задачи исследования, определяются объект и предмет исследования, формулируются основная и дополнительные гипотезы, указываются методы и эмпирическая база, а также этапы проведения исследования, научная новизна, теоретическая и практическая значимость работы. Первая глава включает в себя обзор иностранной и отечественной литературы по теме профессионального самоопределения подростков. Представлены разделы, посвященные исследованию феномена профессионального самоопределения в подростковом возрасте, возможности применения модели эннеаграммы в процессе профессионального самоопределения подростков в части определения профессионально значимых качеств. Выводы по первой главе представляют собой итоги по изучению теоретического материала. Вторая глава посвящена эмпирической части исследования. В ней представлено описание организации и методов проведенного исследования и результатов, полученных по всем использованным методикам: опросник для определения базового эннеатипа (С.М. Неаполитанский), «Якоря карьеры» (э. Шейн), «Профиль» (Г.В. Резапкина), «Дифференциально-диагностический опросник» (Е.А. Климов), «Анкета старшеклассника», направленная на изучени профессиональных ориентиров, смысложизненных ценностей и дальнейшего планирования учебной деятельности. Также в главе представлен корреляционный анализ результатов исследования. Выводы по главе 2 включают в себя основные результаты эмпирического исследования. В заключении в обобщенном виде изложены результаты теоретической и эмпирической частей работы, а также выводы по выдвинутым гипотезам, обоснована практическая значимость исследования и описаны возможные перспективы дальнейшей разработки данной проблематики. / The object of the study was the professional self-determination of adolescents in grades 8 and 9, aged 14-16 years. The subject of the study was the enneatypes of personality and professional self-determination of adolescents. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (69 sources) and an appendix, which includes forms of the methods used. The volume of the master's thesis is 93 pages, which contain 18 figures and 7 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the elaboration of the problem, sets the purpose and objectives of the study, defines the object and subject of the study, formulates the main and additional hypotheses, indicates the methods and empirical base, as well as the stages of research, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical significance of the work. The first chapter includes a review of foreign and domestic literature on the topic of professional self-determination of adolescents. The sections devoted to the study of the phenomenon of professional self-determination in adolescence, the possibility of using the enneagram model in the process of professional self-determination of adolescents in terms of determining professionally significant qualities are presented. The conclusions of the first chapter represent the results of the study of theoretical material. The second chapter is devoted to the empirical part of the study. It describes the organization and methods of the study and the results obtained using all the methods used: a questionnaire to determine the basic enneatype (S.M. Neapolitansky), "Career Anchors" (E. Shane), "Profile" (G.V. Rezapkina), "Differential diagnostic questionnaire" (E.A. Klimov), "A high school student's questionnaire" aimed at studying professional guidelines, life values and further planning of educational activities. The chapter also presents a correlation analysis of the results of the study. The conclusions of Chapter 2 include the main results of the empirical study. In conclusion, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work are summarized, as well as conclusions on the hypotheses put forward, the practical significance of the study is substantiated and possible prospects for further development of this issue are described.

Fields of psychology research, such as Health Psychology, Positive Psychology and Positive Organizational Behavior, have considered the resilience as an important way to understand the positive and healthy aspects of human beings. This work aims to expand knowledge about the resilience and their relations with other constructs in the organizational context. For this, the objective of this research was to verify the predictive capacity of intragroup conflict (relationship and task), of social support at work (emotional, informational and instrumental) and of professional self-concept (health, realization, self-confidence and competence) on resilience (positive adaptation or acceptance of change, spirituality, resignation towards life, personal competence and persistence in the face of difficulty) of military police. The study included 133 military police officers of a battalion in the state of Sao Paulo, prevailing male subjects (97.7%), mean age 30 years (SD = 5.7). The following scales were used to measure the variables:Resilience Rating Scale reduced, Intragroup Conflict Scale, the Scale of Perceived Social Support at Work and Self-Concept Scale. The data were submitted to descriptive calculations and at analyses of multiple lineal regression standard. The results indicated that the model that grouped the antecedent variables (intragroup conflict, social support at work and professional selfconcept) significantly explained the variance of the dimensions of resilience: 30% of persistence in the face of difficulties, 29% of positive adaptation or acceptance of change, 28% of personal competence and 11% of spirituality. Variables that were statistically significant impact on persistence in the face of difficulties were emotional support at work, whose direction of the prediction was opposite, and confidence, whose direction of prediction was direct. Positive adaptation or acceptance of change was as inverse predictor the health and as direct predictor the self-confidence. The personal competence had a significant impact on the variable selfconfidence, wich was a direct predictor. Spirituality, in turn, had a single significant predictor, the variable realization, whose direction of prediction was direct. The results suggest that among the independent variables, the professional self-concept demonstrated greater explanatory power of the variance in resilience. In light of the theory of the area were discussed these findings. Finally,limitations and the suggestion a research agenda that confirm and expand the results of this research were presented. / A resiliência é um construto que remete à habilidade do ser humano de ter êxito frente às adversidades da vida, superá-las e inclusive, ser fortalecido ou transformado por elas. Campos de investigações da psicologia, como Psicologia da Saúde, Psicologia Positiva e Comportamento Organizacional Positivo, têm considerado a resiliência como uma importante via para a compreensão dos aspectos positivos e saudáveis dos indivíduos. Este trabalho pretendeu ampliar o conhecimento acerca da resiliência e suas relações com outros construtos no contexto organizacional. Para isto, definiu-se como objetivo geral deste estudo verificar a capacidade preditiva do conflito intragrupal (tarefa e relacionamento), do suporte social no trabalho (emocional, informacional e instrumental) e do autoconceito profissional (saúde, realização, autoconfiança e competência) sobre a resiliência (adaptação ou aceitação positiva de mudanças, espiritualidade, resignação diante da vida, competência pessoal e persistência diante das dificuldades) de policiais militares. Participaram do estudo 133 policiais militares de um batalhão do interior do estado de São Paulo, prevalecendo indivíduos do sexo masculino (97,7%), com idade média de 30 anos (DP= 5,7). Para a medida das variáveis foram utilizadas as seguintes escalas validadas: Escala de Avaliação de Resiliência reduzida, Escala de Conflitos Intragrupais, Escala de Percepção de Suporte Social no Trabalho e a Escala de Autoconceito Profissional. Os dados foram submetidos a cálculos descritivos e a análises de regressão linear múltipla padrão. Os resultados indicaram que o modelo que reunia as variáveis antecedentes (conflito intragrupal, suporte social no trabalho e autoconceito profissional) explicou significativamente a variância das dimensões da resiliência: 30% da persistência diante das dificuldades, 29% da adaptação ou aceitação positiva de mudanças, 28% da competência pessoal e 11% da espiritualidade. As variáveis que tiveram impacto estatisticamente importante sobre a persistência diante das dificuldades foram o suporte emocional no trabalho, cuja direção da predição foi inversa, e autoconfiança, cuja direção da predição foi direta. A adaptação ou aceitação positiva de mudanças teve como preditor inverso a variável saúde e como preditor direto a autoconfiança. A competência pessoal teve impacto significativo da variável autoconfiança, que se mostrou um preditor direto. A espiritualidade, por sua vez, teve um único preditor significante, a variável realização, cuja direção da predição foi direta. Os resultados sugerem que dentre as variáveis antecedentes, o autoconceito profissional evidenciou maior poder de explicação da variância da resiliência. À luz da literatura da área foram discutidos estes achados. Por fim, foram apresentadas as limitações e a proposta de uma agenda de pesquisa que contribua para confirmação e ampliação dos resultados desta investigação.

The dissertation thesis Structures and hierarchies in professional discourse of journalists in the Czech Republic with a focus on the factor of gender deals with professional self-reflection of Czech daily news journalists from the perspective of feminist political economy. This attitude connects the field of gender media studies and the political economy of communication, stresses the intersection of gender and other factors (demographic, socio- cultural, economic, organizational) when examining the influences in the profession and poses questions about the extent of individual autonomy in both professional and extraprofessional hierarchies. The theoretical introduction defines the field of gender media studies in terms of topics and conflicting ideas, summarizes the conclusions of gender research on media institutions and focuses on the perspective of studying gender among many influences in the news such as economic, sociocultural and organizational factors. The analysis of in-depth interviews with Czech daily news journalists reveals how the importance of gender as an influence in news media is constructed in professional discourse in the context of other structural and organizational influences. El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar la autoeficacia profesional en trabajadores que desarrollan distintos tipos de actividad física y que laboran en una empresa privada del rubro deportivo en Lima, Perú. Participaron 160 trabajadores; el instrumento utilizado fue el cuestionario AU - 10 para medir la autoeficacia profesional, validada en Perú por Calderón-De la Cruz, Domínguez-Lara y Arroyo-Rodriguez en el 2018. Los resultados obtenidos no corroboran la hipótesis principal, dado que no se encontró diferencias en la autoeficacia profesional según el tipo de actividad física que los trabajadores desarrollan. Sin embargo, se encontró que hay mayor predominio de ejercicio físico en mujeres y a los que pertenecen al grupo de 20 a 40 años, mientras que el mayor predominio del deporte se halló en hombres y en el grupo de 40 a 60 años. Además, en cuanto al sedentarismo, el predominio está en las mujeres y el grupo mayor a 60 años. / The aim of this study was to compare the professional self-efficacy in workers with different types of physical activity within a private company in the sports sector in Lima, Peru. The sample consisted of 160; the instrument used was the AU-10 questionnaire to measure professional self-efficacy, validated in Peru by Calderón-De la Cruz, Domínguez-Lara and Arroyo-Rodriguez in 2018. The results obtained do not corroborate the hypothesis, since no differences were found in professional self-efficacy according to the type of physical activity. However, it was found that there is a greater predominance of physical exercise in women and those belonging to the 20 to 40-year-old group, while the greater predominance of sport was found in men and in the 40 to 60-year-old group.
