Previous issue date: 2006-10-20 / The present research portrays the study on the role of reflection and
interaction as a feasible alternative leading to the implementation of actions to the
exodus from the comfort zone in which students of English find themselves in
class. An attempt was made to comprehend the fundamental part played by the
teacher-researcher in reflecting on his/her practice in interacting with his/her
students in order to encourage them to take charge of their learning process and to
act in an independent and critical manner based on the view of Celani (2000). It is
a piece of action research conducted in a college for foreign language teachers
located in a semiresidential area in Greater Rio de Janeiro. In the investigation, the
researcher undertook the role of a participant aiming at the construction of her own
knowledge of the forms through which reflection and interaction can contribute to
raising awareness of the actions for the construction of knowledge and leading to
the exodus from the comfort zone. A teacher of English and her group of students
participated in this study. This research was theoretically based on the works of
Dewey (1909/1997) on reflection, Brown & Levinson (1987) on the theory of
politeness, Goffman (1967) on face work, Halliday (1994) on the use of language
in social practices and Vygotsky (1930 - 1998; 1934 - 1987) on interaction and
knowledge building. The results cast light on possible ways of empowering
learners by means of reflection and interaction, and the exodus from the comfort

Previous issue date: 2007-04-25 / The present study describes and interprets an experience of teachinglearning
English mediated by computer in a face-to-face environment, lived by
undergraduate students of Languages. The study also focuses on the representations
these students had about using computers for language teaching purposes, before
and after the accomplishment of two sequenced communicative tasks. In order to
reach the established goals, the research was methodologically grounded on the
hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (van Manen, 1990), and theoretically
based on issues related to learning mediated by computers (Warschauer, 2000),
digital literacy (Tfouni,1988,1995; Kleiman,1995,1998; Sampaio and Leite,2000),
representations (Moscovici,1984,1994; Freire and Lessa,2003), and communicative
tasks (Nunan, 1989).
The phenomenon on focus in this study was experienced throughout
the accomplishment of two sequenced communicative tasks, undertaken as a twentyhour
extracurricular activity. Data were collected through an initial questionnaire
and two reflective guidelines applied after the accomplishment of each task.
The outcomes are presented in two sections: the first regards the
participants representations about using computers for English teaching-learning
purposes, and reveals that the initial intuitive perceptions are confirmed; however, in
the end, they were grounded on the experience lived. The second section addresses
the experienced phenomenon, describing it and presenting the temes that provide its
structure - knowledge, environment, and interaction - detailed in their respective
subtemes. Besides describing and interpreting the phenomenon of living the
experience of using computers for educational purposes, and identifying the
representations of those who had experienced it, the research also contributes to
enlarge the discussion about digital inclusion as a form to avoid social exclusion / O presente estudo descreve e interpreta uma vivência de ensino-aprendizagem
(Warschauer,2000), alfabetização e letramento digital (Tfouni, 1988,1995;
Kleiman,1995,1998; Sampaio e Leite,2000), representações (Moscovici, 1984,
1994; Freire e Lessa, 2003), e tarefas comunicativas (Nunan,1989).

Previous issue date: 2007-05-29 / This research aims at investigating the digital literacy via Internet through the
construction of the pedagogical and technological knowledge of in-service teachers
of English in order to use the computer in the classroom. It was done through the
development of an online course, which aimed at discussing the theoretical aspects
of including the computer in their pedagogical practice; developing the teachers skills
in terms of the handling of the software Word, Paint and PowerPoint, as well as the
creation and upload of WebPages; and, making use of the software, as well as the
Internet, as a pedagogical resource in the classroom. It was done through a reflexive
process based on each participants individual contexts.
The chosen methodological approach was the case study. The participants
were five in-service teachers of English, teaching in various educational contexts.
They took part in an online course of teacher training, focusing digital literacy.
Besides the student-teachers, the researcher of this investigation took part as the
tutor of the course. The data analysis searched for digital literacy in relation to the
use of the Internet and computer software and in the use of the computer as a
pedagogical resource. To be able to verify the development of the digital literacy in
the course, the researcher developed three scales aiming at measuring the initial and
final literacy of each participant. The scales developed were: Internet Literacy,
Software Literacy and Pedagogical Use of Computing Resources.
The results showed that the participants were successful in their effort to
become digital literate in the Internet, software and pedagogical use of computing
resources. The perceived processes were collaborative learning and interaction
among peers (student-student, student-tutor-student) together with a reflexive and
critical behavior. The results also showed that a theoretical-practical course was very
important, since it allowed the theoretical aspects being discussed to be immediately
applied. Moreover, the straight application of the principles discussed in the teachers
personal educational contexts allowed the experience to become more significative.
The participants greater exposition and familiarization with the computer allowed
them to become less frightened of the resource, more confident in using it, as well as
to lose the impotency feeling when facing this resource, previously seen as resource
to be used only by computer experts. Consequently, this greater familiarization led to
the first steps in both the search for innovation in the teaching-learning process and
the change of the participants educational paradigm / Este trabalho tem por objetivo investigar o letramento digital via Internet na
programas Word, Paint e PowerPoint, além de criação e publicação de WebPages;
As participantes

Previous issue date: 2008-02-11 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This dissertation aims at investigating the meanings and senses attributed by a
special needs learner and his English teacher, concerning inclusion and teaching learning.
This study is anchored on Sociocultural and Historical Theory (Vigotski,
1934/2003) and has got as its theoretical framework: mediation in teaching-learning and
development (Vigotski, 1934/2003; Newman e Holzman, 2002; and others),
defectology (Vigotski, 1926a/2004; Daniels, 2007; and others); meanings and senses
(Vigotski, 1934/2001; González Rey, 2000; Aguiar, 2000; Bakhtin; 1929-30/1992; and
others); emotions and feelings (Vigotski, 1930/2004; Aguiar, 2006; González Rey,
2005; Daniels, 2007a; Freire, 1996/2006; and others); inclusion-exclusion based on the
previous discussions (Daniels, 2007; Spinoza, 1677/2003; Vigotski, 1934/2003;
Sacristán, 2002; and others). The data were analyzed according to the category of
thematic content proposed by Bronckart (1999), based on the lexical choices made by
the participants of this research. This study was carried out in a state school in the
central region of the Greater São Paulo and its methodology is routed on qualitative and
critical-collaborative research (Minayo and Sanches, 1993; Madureira, 2000;
Magalhães, 2007). Given the analysis of the student and the teacher´s thematic contents,
it was possible to establish a reflection about inclusion in practice and about the
emotions of the subjects who experience it closely -student and teacher- indicating that
there are many gaps between the idealization and prescription of inclusion and the
school practice, besides the multiplicity of contradictory feelings that coexist in
inclusion-exclusion and the importance meanings can have on the construction of the
sense that the subject can attribute to himself / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar os sentidos e significados sobre
no ensino-aprendizagem e desenvolvimento (Vigotski, 1934/2003; Newman e Holzman,
2002; entre outros), defectologia (Vigotski, 1926a/2004; Daniels, 2007; entre outros); os
sentidos e os significados (Vigotski, 1934/2001; González Rey, 2000; Aguiar, 2000;
1930/2004; Aguiar, 2006; González Rey, 2005; Daniels, 2007a; Freire, 1996/2006;
entre outros); a inclusão-exclusão a partir da discussão dos anteriores (Daniels, 2007;

Previous issue date: 2008-05-08 / This study aims at describing and interpreting the classroom practice of English teachers who perceive themselves as digitally illiterate while evaluating their university Technology students as digitally literate. By addressing such a phenomenon of lived experience, this investigation therefore aims at reflecting upon teaching practice and digital literacy issues that emerge from instructional contexts in which computers must be used as mediators in ESP classes.
To achieve its purpose, this study is founded on the concepts of reflection (Dewey, 1933, 1938, 1967; Perrenoud, 2002; Schön, 1983, 1987, 1992, 2000), digital literacy (Buzato, 2001; Soares, 2002) and English for Specific Purposes (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987; Strevens, 1988; Robinson, 1991; Dudley Evans & St. John, 2000; Ramos, 2005;Celani, 2005).
The methodological approach adopted is the hermeneutic-phenomenological one (van Manen, 1990; Ricouer, 1986/2002; Freire, 2006, 2007). The phenomenon description and interpretation emerged from two teachers textual registers (narrative and interview) on their university teaching experiences in Technology courses and on the way they deal with their perceived digital illiteracy in order to fulfill the institutions and learners demands.
This research results indicate that searching and reflection are the themes that constitute the phenomenon on focus, thus revealing its nature, its identity. Such outcomes may provide teachers of English with input to reflect upon digital literacy and upon the ESP approach applied to university contexts in which teachers and students have a different level of knowledge and expertise in managing technological resources / Este estudo tem por objetivo descrever e interpretar o fenômeno da prática docente de professores universitários de inglês que se percebem iletrados digitalmente e que ministram aulas para alunos que consideram digitalmente letrados.
A abordagem metodológica utilizada é a hermenêutico-fenomenológica (van Manen, 1990; Ricouer, 1986/2002; Freire, 2006,2007).

Previous issue date: 2008-06-27 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The aim of this dissertation is to describe and interpret the phenomenon of
being an English language teacher educator at a public school, under the
perspective of those who lived it: the researcher and two colleagues, teachers
of English in a state public school.
In order to understand the manifestation of this phenomenon, the theorical basis
of this research relied on the understanding of an English language teacher, as
an educator, which leads him or her beyond the particularities of the discipline
itself (Freire,1970,1987,1996; Celani,2001,2004; Kumaravadivelu,2003); on the
critical view of teaching English language (Pennycook, 1998, 2001); on the
concept of local knowledge ( Canagarajah,2005); and also on the development
of scientific and spontaneous concepts of Vygotsky (1926/2001).
Two teachers and the researcher, who is also an English language teacher,
participated in this research which took place in two state public schools of
S.Paulo, located in the outskirts of S.Paulo city. This research was carried out
based on the hermeneutic phenomenological approach (van Manen,1990). It
describes and interprets the focused phenomenon using the accounts of the
participants lived experience, which were registered by means of the following
instruments: interview; open ended questionnaires; narratives; video sessions
and conversations.
The task of interpreting the participants accounts of lived experience was
based on the thematization recommended by van Manen (1990), and the
systematization of the analytical procedure was based on Freire (2006).
The results of the interpretation revealed that the phenomenon of being an
English language teacher educator in a public school consists of three themes:
Transmission , representing the importance given to transmiting the linguistic
knowledge of the profession; Challenges , referring to the need to
contextualize the knowledge taught, indiscipline the professional development;
Demands , indicating the feelings, emotions and aspirations which are implied
in the daily professional context / O objetivo desta dissertação é descrever e interpretar o fenômeno ser
pesquisadora.
especificidades de sua disciplina (Freire, 1970 1987,1996; Celani, 2001, 2004;
Kumaravadivelu, 2003;), no ensino crítico da língua inglesa (Pennycook, 2001 e
Apoiei-me na abordagem Hermenêutico-Fenomenológica (van Manen, 1990)

Previous issue date: 2009-05-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis aimed to contribute to the understanding of English Language teacher s work
from Elementary and High School, from Public School, in the interior of Paraná State, in
Brazil, through the analysis and interpretation of (re)configurations constructed on
educational acting in texts produced by teachers from the state school, about this situation of
work. This way, we intend to show how the educational work is (re)configured by its
protagonists in texts produced by themselves about their professional activity. To develop
this study, we adopt theoretical-methodical presuppositions of the sociodiscursive
interactionism (ISD) (BRONCKART, 1999/2003/2007, 2004, 2006, 2008), an
interdisciplinary area from Psychology, which attributes a fundamental role in the human
development to the acting and the language. Considering the work as a way of acting and a
factor which leads to the development and, more specifically, considering the educational
work, which is institutionally regulated and that has as an intention to form the citizen, we
propose to understand the connections between the language, a constitutive aspect of the
human being, and the work, a central point for the understanding of the current society. This
research investigates, more specifically, the connections between language and the
teacher s work considering the different levels through which this work is constituted. We
also assume theoretical aspects from the Sciences of the Work as the Ergonomics of the
Activity (AMIGUES, 2004; SAUJAT, 2002, 2004) e, more necessarily, the Clinic of the
Activity, based on the Psychology of Work (CLOT, 1999/2006; FAÏTA, 2002, 2004, 2005).
This inquiry was carried through the procedure of data collection of the instruction to the
double, following the perspective of the Psychology of the Work, Clinic of the Activity and
Ergonomics of the Activity, taking as a basis the studies developed by Oddone et al. (1981).
This procedure could allow the teacher to search for elements that supply subsidies for a
critical analysis of theoretical-methodical presuppositions present at his speech, helping him
to perform with a greater scientific ability on educational acting seen as work. The speeches
of the investigated teachers had been analyzed according to the methodological procedures
of the sociodiscursive interactionism (BRONCKART, 1999/2003/2007, 2004, 2006, 2008),
considering the vision of education as a work , inspired by the Ergonomics of the Activity
and the Clinic of the Activity for the interpretation of the results. We present, in this research,
a synthesis of the pressupositions we assume and some questions such as: a) the work; b)
educational work; c) work of English Language teacher; considering its connections in the
society contemporary and with the language, beyond the c) questions about the procedure of
data collection and analysis as well. Finally, we conclude the texts produced through the
procedure of the instructions to the double, by the worker, can offer rich subsidies for the
understanding of his situation of work. In the case of the educational work, we can not only
understand what the professor carries through as what prevents his professional practice
(CLOT, 1999/2006). Thus, understanding the constitutive and representative aspects of this
work in a better way, it is possible to be more prepared to know how to deal with the
conflicts and the choices in search for alternative solutions / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo principal contribuir para a compreensão do trabalho do professor
fundamental no desenvolvimento humano.
que se fundamenta na Psicologia do Trabalho (cf. CLOT, 1999/2006; FAÏTA, 2002, 2004, 2005;
ROGER, 2007; SCHELLER, 2003).
uso desse procedimento

Previous issue date: 2009-07-28 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The objectives of this study are: to analyze how the teaching-learning theories
and language descriptions that ground the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters
to teach foreign languages in elementary and secondary schools (PCN-LE, Brasil,
1998 and PCN-EM, Brasil, 1999) are present in a computer-mediated English course
called Interaction Teachers; and to identify the perceptions of teachers, participants
of this course, on linguistic and technological aspects exploited in it. This research is
grounded on concepts discussed in the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters to
teach foreign languages in elementary and secondary schools (PCN-LE, Brasil, 1998
and PCN-EM, Brazil, 1999) as well as on currents of thoughts in psychology that form
the basis for teaching-learning theories that have most influenced the teachinglearning
of foreign languages in our culture (Williams & Burden, 1997, Vygotsky,
1934/2007). This study is also based on concepts of language descriptions
(Hutchinson & Waters, 1987; Nunan, 1999), principles of Computer-Assisted
Language Learning -- CALL (Warschauer & Healey, 1998, 2004, Beatty, 2003;
Hardisty & Windeatt, 1989) and the criteria for didactic material evaluation proposed
by Ramos (1998). This study, a case study, was conducted with six student-teachers.
The data were collected in 2008, by questionnaires. The analysis of the course
shows that the language description and the teaching-learning theory that underlie
the course Interaction Teachers do not match the paradigms in the Brazilian
National Curriculum Parameters to teach foreign languages in elementary and
secondary schools (PCN-LE, Brasil, 1998 and PCN-EM, Brazil, 1999) because the
course is based on the structural view of language and on the behaviorist teachinglearning
theory. As far as the participants perceptions on linguistic and technological
aspects exploited in the course are concerned, results show that they have not
improved either their linguistic knowledge or technological skills as a consequence of
As bases teóricas desta pesquisa
Assisted Language Learning CALL (Warschauer & Healey, 1998, 2004; Beatty,

Previous issue date: 2009-07-24 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / This research aimed at investigating the representations of English teachers of the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) on ESP teaching-learning and the specific objectives were to investigate their representations on the roles of the teacher and the student in this situation. This work bases its concept of representations on Celani and Magalhães (2002); Minayo (1995) and Moscovici (2003). It is also founded on the principles of ESP Approach (Celani, 2005; Celani et al., 1988; Dudley-Evans and St. John, 1998; Holmes, 1982; Hutchinson and Waters, 1987; Ramos, 2005; 2008; 2009; Robinson, 1991) and ESP teacher development (Celani, 1998; Celani et al., 1988; Ramos, 2005 and Robinson, 1991). This case study is based on Johnson (1992) and Stake (1998) and makes use of two questionnaires as data collection research tools. The results indicated, in answer to the search question, that there are representations, among other myths, that ESP teaching-learning means reading teaching-learning. It was also evident that the deconstruction of this myth, as others, is a matter of teacher education. Based on these results, it was concluded, firstly, that courses with emphasis on this area should be promoted to professionals who wish to work and/or to those who already work with ESP. It was also concluded that it is important to carry out a needs analysis in the graduation courses at UFAM, with the objective of investigating its students needs to study English nowadays. Moreover, one can suggest the creation of a subject on the undergraduation courses in Arts at UFAM, which aims at offering teacher development for professionals who want to work with language for specific purposes / Este trabalho teve como objetivo geral investigar representações de professores de inglês da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM) sobre o ensino-aprendizagem desse idioma por meio da Abordagem Instrumental e, como específicos, investigar suas representações sobre o papel do professor e do aluno nele inseridos.

Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research aims at investigating the local-global knowledge which emerges from the
discoursive practices of two teachers of English who have just started the course
Reflection on Action: the teacher of English learning and teaching and two other ones
who have already finished the same course. Our theoretical construct is based on
Contemporary Applied Linguistics on the perspective of Moita Lopes (2006a; 2006b;
2002); Kumaravadivelu (2006) and Celani (2005). This study is grounded on the
binominal local-global knowledge (Canagarajah, 2005); on the official documents that
guide the practice of teachers of English in the Brazilian educational context (São Paulo,
2008; Brasil, 2002; 2000; 1998) and on Vygotsky s Sociocultural and Historical Theory
of teaching and learning (Vygotsky, 1930/1989; 1934/2001, among others). The
research is conducted by an interpretative methodology (Myers, 1997; Moita Lopes;
1996; Erickson; 1986, among others) and the data has been collected through two
instruments: a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview (Rizzini, Castro and Sartor,
1999). For analyzing and interpreting the data, three categories of analysis have been
established: the category of thematic content, the observation of how the participants
place their enunciates and deontic modalizations (Bronckart, 1997/1999). The study
concentrates on three areas of analysis (a) senses, meanings and aims of teachinglearning
English in the educational context; (2) planning and criteria for curriculum
content selection; and (3) pedagogical practices. The results showed that the teachers
who were taking the first module of the course Reflection on Action presented a
discourse strongly supported by local knowledge, but heading to a dialogue with a
global one. On the other hand, the teachers who have already finished the course
achieved more autonomy to reflect about the global knowledge in their relationship to
local one to promote the teaching-learning English for specific contexts / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar os saberes locais-globais que emergem nas
e aprendizagem sócio-histórico-cultural (Vygotsky, 1930/1989; 1934/2001; 1934/2003;
dentre outros).
utilizadas três categorias: conteúdo temático, observação do posicionamento
contextos locais
