Previous issue date: 2006-08-21 / Secretaria da Educação / This research aims at investigating my classroom practices, bearing in mind
the process of English language teaching learning in a public school. It tries to find
out the students historic and social context as a way to analyze the representations,
worries and dreams, which the students bring to the school context. The research is
qualitative in approach (André, 1995/2000), and can be seen as critical ethnographic
action research (Kincheloe, 1993/1997 and André, 1995/2000), as the researcherteacher
intends to change the learning context.
The theoretical framework of the research is organized in six parts: 1)
Theories proposed by Vygotsky (1930/1998 e 1934/1999); 2) The role of language
by Bakhtin (1953/2003 e 1929/2004); 3) The role of representations in the foreign
language teaching-learning process (Moscovici, 1984); 4) Parâmetros Curriculares
Nacionais - Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 1998); 5) The reflective teacher (Freire,
1970/1987) and Moita Lopes (1996/2000); 6) The concepts of banking and
problematizing education by Freire (1970/1987); Bakthin s concept of language
(1953/2003 e 1929/2004) and Heuristics (Moustakas, 1990), are used as a theorical
tool for analyzing and interpreting data.
The data analysis offers an interesting framework to discuss knowledge
construction during interaction between researcher-teacher and students in the
classroom. Through strategies and reflective practices the students are lead to
understand their importance in the world, in such a way that they become critical,
conscious and communicatively competent in a second language / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo rever as minhas práticas pedagógicas no
Aprendizagem, tendo como referencial teórico Vygotsky (1930/1998 e 1934/1999);
2) O papel da linguagem, utilizando o conceito Bakhtiniano (1953/2003 e
1929/2004); 3) O papel das representações no ensino-aprendizagem (Moscovici,
1984); 4) Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 1998); 5)
O papel do professor reflexivo (Freire,1970/1987) e Moita Lopes (1996/2000); 6)

Previous issue date: 2006-10-31 / This research focuses on the adoption of Transversality in
the critical formation of students in an English teacher formation course. Our
objective is to show that this approach gives the students the opportunity of
building knowledge in interaction with reality. Facing themes of social
relevance, the pre-service teacher develops communicative and linguistic
abilities through reports and discussions, which will enable him / her to
develop critical thinking. This criticism gives the student the possibility of
experiencing linguistic characteristics of argumentative discourse. This study
is supported by theories which include: a. Transversality, as seen by Celani,
Yus and others; b. the teaching-learning interaction according to Vygostky s
Zone of Proximal Development; c. ethics; and d. inclusive education. Data is
analyzed according to qualitative methodology and data collection followed
ethnographic procedures. The participants are the students and teacher in an
English teacher formation course at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de
São Paulo. Data was obtained from presentations delivered at the end of a
thematic discussion adopting a transdisciplinary approach. An audio recording
and subsequent transcription were performed. The results suggest that the
students frequently adopted an argumentative discourse to express
themselves critically, moving beyond the narrative discourse borders
proposed in the original course programme. It is our belief that a critical,
committed formation of English pre-service teachers will foster the relevance
of their role as educators of critical and inclusive citizens. This is the
motivation for this study to be carried out and presented / Este estudo aborda a adoção da Transversalidade na
afetam o cotidiano, o aluno desenvolve habilidades comunicativas e
características do discurso argumentativo.
Desenvolvimento Proximal; c. ética; e d. inclusão. A metodologia adotada é

Previous issue date: 2006-10-09 / This study aimed at identifying and interpreting the representa tions of a group of
teachers of English upon the guidelines of the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do
Ensino Médio (PCN-EM) and their applicability, as well as upon the study plan and its
objectives and contentens. The theoretical framework adopted for the development
of this research was: social representations (Moscovici, 1984); tacit knowledge
(Polanyi, 1967); reflection (Schön, 1984); theoretical knowledge (Demo, 1995); and
the PCN-EM (2002). The methodological approach chosen was the case study
(Stake, 1988), and the research context was a group of 12 High School English
teachers. Taking into account the adopted methodological guideline, the identification
and interpretation of the teachers´ representations were achieved through the
analysis of the units of meaning that emerged from data (van Manen, 1990). The
results of the analysis showed that the teachers perceive the PCN-EM guidelines as
being valid, badly understood and topic for discussions. As for the study plan, in
terms of its objectives and content, teachers perceived it as being a fundamental tool
for organizing, orienting, measuring and controlling what needs to be done, and
therefore they believe it must be re-elaborated in conjunction with other teachers,
whenever necessary. Finally, the participants have the representation that the factors
that allow PCN-EM applicability are the discussions and the clarification of these
guidelines, during meetings with pedagogical coordinators, according to the teachers
representations. The factors that still prevent its applicability are the excess number
of students per class, the lack of teaching aids, the teachers´ isolation, and the lack
of time and opportunities for discussing and clarifying the PCN-EM s contents. Data
collected and analyzed in this research may be useful in future studies on foreign
language teachers education, especially English teachers, from the perspective of
representações sociais (Moscovici, 1984); conhecimento tácito (Polanyi, 1967);
reflexão (Schön, 1984); conhecimento teórico (Demo, 1995); e os PCN-EM (2002). A
Considerando a orientação metodológica adotada, a identificação e a interpretação
Curriculares Nacionais do Ensino Médio

Previous issue date: 2006-12-01 / This study aims at investigating the representations of four teachers of
English from a language institute in the outskirts of São Paulo towards the English
language, as well as the implications of those representations to the construction of
their professional identities. The theoretical framework of this research is based on
the identity concept (Moita Lopes, 2002; Rajagopalan, 1998; Signorini, 2002;
among others), the representation concept (Moscovici, 2000; Freire e Lessa, 2003;
Celani e Magalhães, 2002), the discussion about the native speaker (Braine, 1999;
Phillipson, 1992; Widdowson, 1994; Kramsh, 1997; Rajagopalan, 2005) and the
role of teacher in the major teaching and learning theories (Bruner, 1996/ 2001;
Mizukami, 1986; Williams e Burden, 1997; Vygotsky 1934/ 2003; Milhollan e
Forisha, 1978). The data were analyzed according to the concept of thematic
content proposed by Bronckart (2003) based on the lexical choices made by the
participants in order to answer the following research questions: What s the
representation of the teachers in relation to the English language? What s the
representation of the teachers about themselves as English language speakers?
How do these representations influence the constructing of their identities? Results
indicate how the analyzed representations contribute to the construction of the
identities of the participants as speakers of English / Este estudo tem por objetivo investigar as representações de quatro
a questão do falante nativo (Braine, 1999; Phillipson, 1992; Widdowson, 1994;
ensino-aprendizagem (Bruner, 1996/ 2001; Mizukami,1986; Williams e Burden,
1997; Vygotsky, 1934/ 2003; Milhollan e Forisha, 1978).
As representações

Previous issue date: 2007-09-28 / This study aims at 1) describing and interpreting the evaluation of English
teacher websites by English teachers, taken as a phenomenon of human
experience, and 2) investigating these teachers representations of websites
designed for them. To achieve these purposes, this study is founded on the
concept of social representations (Moscovici, 1961/1976, 1976, 2003), on web
design research proposed by Skaalid (1998) and Nielsen (1994, 2000, 2003,
2004, 2005), and on the discussion of instruments and website evaluation
criteria (Nielsen, 2005; Schrock, 1998 e Maclachlan, 2002).
The methodological approach chosen is the hermeneutic-phenomenological
one (Ricoeur, 1986/2002; van Manen,1900; Freire, 2006). The research
environment was the web, the virtual context in which the participant teachers
and the researcher interacted through e-mail. The electronic medium was
therefore used to send and receive three questionnaires, and their fifty
ensuing messages.
The results indicate that English teachers show a greater concern about
website content, general organization and navigation. As for the
phenomenon described and investigated, preferences, possibilities, usability
and reflection were the four themes that structure the English teachers
experience of evaluating sites designed for them. Moreover, the research
results provide subsidies to begin thinking about the design of a website
destinados. Para tanto, fundamenta-se no conceito de representações
sociais (Moscovici, 1961/1976, 1976, 2003), nas questões de web design
propostas por Skaalid (1998) e Nielsen (1994, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005), e na
discussão de instrumentos e critérios de avaliação de sites (Nielsen, 2005;
Schrock, 1998 e Maclachlan, 2002).
A abordagem metodológica utilizada é a hermenêutico-fenomenológica

Previous issue date: 2009-04-23 / This research aims to identify the current reality of infant bilingual education in 05 schools in the city of São Paulo as well as to trace the profile of 04 professionals in these schools. In order to do so, the following theoretical references were used: North American and Canadian views (Hornberg, 1991, Freeman, 1998; Lindholm-Leary, 2006 and Baker, 2006) and, especially, Latin American (Mejía, 2002) concerning the bilingual education and the training of reflective, critical and creative teachers (Shulman, 1987; Libâneo and Pimenta, 1999; Imbernón, 2000; Celani, 2001 and 2004; Altet and Perrenoud, 2001, and Batista and Batista, 2002), the paradigm of sociointeractionist teaching-learning (Vygotsky, 1930/2007 and 1934/1999) and the issue of texts that encode the school work (Bronckart 1997/1999 and 2006). Based on empirical studies (questionnaire sent to all schools of infant education, making up 39 institutions and interviews / questionnaires with a teacher from each school and national documents (Law of Guidelines and Bases - Law 9394/96, National Curriculum Reference to Infant Education and Parecer "N" Nº 01/2007 among others), I try to understand the reality of bilingual infant education in some schools in the city of São Paulo, in an attempt to answer my questions of research. It is a critical-interpretativist qualitative research (Severino, 2007) and a collective case study (Stake, 1998) in which I seek to understand the study of several cases in order to increase the comprehension of the area. The data analysis observed the thematic content (Bronckart 1997-1999) in order to seek out information in all of the responses obtained, the specific knowledge that could be part of the enunciators memory regarding the conceptions of bilingual education and that influence in the organization of infant bilingual education in each institution, showing its peculiarity. Besides identifying the background of teachers who work in infant bilingual education schools as well as understanding how the schools face it. The critical interpretativist interpretation sought to interpret the data in the light of representations from the researcher, based on the theoretical foundation. The results indicate that all institutions which took part in the research struggle to develop a program of total immersion, the target language is used 100% of the time children remain at school, especially in the initial series. Gradually, the mother tongue is introduced into the school routine in order to promote literacy and to provide access to culture and preservation of the students identity. All institutions consider the social and individual development through cultural knowledge as one of the fundamental roles of education. The 05 schools argue that they only hire graduated teachers. They also state to offer more training courses inside and outside school, however, the teachers claim not to have access to these courses. On the other hand, all teachers affirm to attend educational and/ or guidance meetings with their coordinators. I could also infer that among the roles of a teacher is to mediate knowledge and promote diverse areas of interaction / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivos principais identificar a realidade atual da educação infantil bilíngüe em 05 escolas da cidade de São Paulo e traçar o perfil de 04 dos profissionais destas escolas.

Previous issue date: 2009-09-30 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This study aims at investigating the (re)constitution of a teacher-researcher in
activities that involve pedagogic material designing for the teaching-learning of English.
More specifically, it investigates how his conceptions about teaching-learning, reading and
language are transformed while designing pedagogic units, joining a supervision meeting, and
using, in class, the created material. Three are the directive questions that lead this
investigation: How is a teacher-researcher (re)constituted in a process of teaching-learning
English at an NGO? What are the concepts of teaching-learning, reading and language that are
prioritized in the material designing process? How do the theories of teaching-learning,
reading and language inform the teacher s practices? This research takes place at an
educational NGO in Jacareí city, São Paulo State, counting on me teacher-researcher, as the
focal participant, and also on some teenage students, as action partners. The Collaborative
Action-Research is the methodology adopted for this investigation, justified by the fact that it
emerges from a social problem, involves the individuals in the situation being investigated,
and also because it is developed in different contexts of collaboration. The research has its
bases on the Social-Historical-Cultural Theory. The theoretical support used to discuss
teaching-learning, reading, and language is found in Bakhtin (1953/1997, 1929/2004),
Baquero (1998), Dolz, Noverraz & Schneuwly (2001/2004), Newman & Holzman (2002),
Vygotsky (1930-34/2007, 1987); and in some official documents, such as the Parâmetros
Curriculares Nacionais: Língua Estrangeira (BRASIL, 1998) and the Orientações
Curriculares para Ensino da Língua Inglesa (SÃO PAULO, 2007). The investigated set of
data consists of: a pedagogic unit, named Pilot Unit; a supervision meeting; another
pedagogic unit, named Unit 1; and four classes in which this last material was used. The
analysis was carried out based on lexical choice and/or on theme content by Bronckart
(1997/2003). Results reveal that the concepts of the focal participant are transformed in a
collaborative way during the material designing process and its use / O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar a (re)constituição do professor-pesquisador em
do professor?
linguagem segundo Bakhtin (1953/1997, 1929/2004), Baquero (1998), Dolz, Noverraz e
e utilização do material didático

Previous issue date: 2009-11-17 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This study aims at understanding if the teacher-researcher s participation in the preparation of the teaching unit in question could bring contributions to students learning at the same time disclosing possible reasons for those contributions. The importance of this research lies in the possibility to clearly comprehend the role of a teaching unit in the English teaching-learning process, from the teacher s and the students point of view. As theoretical bases, this investigation uses, among other concepts, the socio-historical-cultural view of teaching-learning (Vigotski, 1930/1998, 1934/2005), Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 1998) and criteria for the production and evaluation of materials (Cunningsworth, 1984; Graves, 1996, 2000). Methodologically, it is a case study within the interpretive qualitative paradigm that for data collection makes use of questionnaires, reflective diaries, interviews and the final production of students resulting from the unit. The participants are the teacher-researcher and eight students from the 1st grade Ensino Médio , of a state school in the city of São Paulo. The results indicated that the teacher-researcher s participation in the preparation of the material brought contributions, as she felt better prepared to use the material in class and consequently the students learning was more adequately conducted / O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender se o fato da professora-pesquisadora ter participado da elaboração da unidade didática em estudo poderia trazer contribuições para a aprendizagem dos alunos e também descobrir as razões que poderiam levar a tais contribuições.

Previous issue date: 2003-09-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aims at presenting the English language teachers' beliefs about the
use of computers in their teaching practice, and about their role as teachers in the
digital society. To reach this goal, this research is focused on a theoretical conception
of belief, understood as personal truths which, based on experience, guide actions
and influences the beliefs of others. Furthermore, this research is grounded on two
specific literacy concepts, being one restricted to the mechanical operation of the
computer, whereas the other is a broader concept, involving the critical use of the
equipment. Considering the literature related to the realm of educational technology,
this study is also founded on interpretations about man-machine relationship, as well
as on the proposals for the educational use of computers, either in general teaching
or in the English language teaching.
The methodological approach chosen was the hermeneutic phenomenological
one (van Manen, 1990). Public and private schools, as well as language institutes, in
the São Paulo area, served as the research field to this study which engaged 15
teachers of English (9 of them have already been using the computer in their
professional practice whereas the other 6 haven't used it for teaching purposes).
Considering the methodological orientation selected, beliefs were interpreted through
the investigation of the recurrent themes that emerged from data.
These outcomes show that all of the participant teachers are somehow literate
for they are able to handle the mechanical operations of a computer. The nature of
the institution they work for does not seem to be relevant in terms of leading them to
make decisions about applying computers for English teaching purposes. The fact of
using or not computers in their lessons is more likely a matter of personal choice for,
most of the time, although having the equipment available by the school and being
able to use it properly, some teachers decide not to do it. The beliefs revealed by the
professionals focused on in this study may, therefore, provide teachers pre-service
and/or continuing education programs with relevant data to integrate educational
Considerando a

Due to the growing importance of the studies on beliefs related to the teachinglearning process in Brazil and the necessity that these studies, in accordance with the current tendencies of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, do not consist in simply identification and description anymore, but also consider more contextualized analyses of these beliefs, dealing with their relation with several factors such as: culture, politics, society, economy, history etc., the aim of this work was to study the beliefs of a group of undergraduate English teachers in what concerns the English language and the United States of America, as well as the implications of a growing global feeling of anti- Americanism in a specific context. This work is part of the third research objective of the thematic project named TELETANDEM BRASIL – Línguas estrangeiras para todos, as it is related to teacher education for the virtual environment. Teletandem is a new way of teaching-learning that allows real time interaction between distant partners by using audio (listening and talking), video (webcam, photos, drawing board) and textual (writing and reading) resources of personal computers. In this regard, issues related to prejudice, stereotyping, othering, culture, identity, interculturality and others were also discussed and analyzed in teletandem interactions performed by a Brazilian undergraduate English teacher and a United States citizen. Based in the analyses of data collected through multiple instruments, it was possible to perceive that the participants of the research tend to associate the English language with a specific group of countries, especially USA and England. It was also possible to identify the presence of the feeling of anti-Americanism, parallel to a feeling of admiration and adoration concerning the USA – a situation of conflict ...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)
