Analysis of the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) as a promotional tool for the South African automotive industry in the global automotive environment

Lamprecht, Norman 30 June 2006 (has links)
The Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) was implemented on 1 September 1995 in the context of the country's political and economic liberalisation and the major structural shift in government policy and the trade regime. In an intensely competitive global environment, the strategies of a few dominant motor vehicle manufacturers, mainly operating from the Triad regions of North America, Europe and Japan, impact significantly on the developments of the global automotive industry. Over the past decade the small, highly protected and inwardly focused South African automotive industry has become fully integrated in the global strategies of foreign parent companies. As South Africa's leading manufacturing sector, the automotive sector is contributing significantly to the country's economy in terms of exports, investment, employment and the gross domestic product. The objective of the study was to establish and measure the relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool in the global automotive environment by capturing the responses and perceptions of direct automotive industry exporters and stakeholders for * the South African automotive industry in general, and * the companies forming part of the empirical survey. To satisfy the objectives of the study, the research methodology incorporated an extensive primary and secondary research phase (qualitative and quantitative). A structured empirical survey was used to collect the primary data. The survey data were captured and processed by the Bureau for Market Research (BMR), Unisa. The main findings of the study are that: * The promotional relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool is embedded in the programme's ability to trigger interest in the South African automotive industry, to generate business and to attract investments. * The MIDP is successful in contributing to the automotive sector's international competitiveness and is therefore a very important promotional tool for convincing foreign parent companies to consider South Africa as an investment destination. * The South African automotive industry would not be able to cope with global competition without the MIDP. * Different factors impact on the business operations of the South African automotive industry in general and the specific company in particular and the factors are viewed differently by the selected groups based on their demographic details. The process of trade liberalisation is forcing many South African companies to encounter both intensified competition and new forms of competition. The South African government's target of a 6 percent economic growth rate by 2010 will largely depend on the ongoing successes achieved in priority sectors such as the domestic automotive sector. / Business Management / M. EFETIVIDADE DAS ÁREAS DE RESERVA FLORESTAL LEGAL POR MEIO DO PAGAMENTO PELOS SERVIÇOS AMBIENTAIS: PERSPECTIVA PARA A RECUPERAÇÃO DO CERRADO GOIANO.

Moura, Angela Acosta Giovanini de 15 March 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-10T10:46:35Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 ANGELA ACOSTA GIOVANINI DE MOURA.pdf: 6028278 bytes, checksum: 279d8e6dad6dc1bbcd40c408e1bdf72d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-15 / The present dissertation analyzes the advantage of adopting incentive mechanisms as a tool for integrated environmental management of the Legal Reserve areas, aiming the Goiás' Cerrado. In this sense, among the issues addressed in international discussions about environmental and climate questions that marked the last decades, pointing to the need to protect natural resources, is in evidence the forests contributions to reduce for greenhouse gases emissions, taking into view of the aggravating factor printed by deforestation and burning to the climate change. Through theoretical research literature about the origin and evolution of forest protection in Brazil, we investigated the importance of preserving the Legal Reserve areas in favor of the climate and biodiversity, analynsing, for both, the environmental services provided by the vegetation of these areas. The research also treated the payment for environmental services as a mechanism inducing of desired environmental behavior and the importance of encouraging the reforestation practices in the legal reserve areas, supported by the grant of an economic compensation to landowners or not, considering the benefits that the positive externalities of these activities can bring to the society as a whole. The thematic focus is fixed in the Cerrado, especially in the region of state of Goiás (Brazil), where 97% of the biome is concentrated at the beginning of the century, reducing nowadays at a percentage below to 30%, considering the accelerating deforestation began in the decades of 70 and 80, which still continues today, because of the ineffectiveness of command and control mechanisms adopted by the current forest policy to hold the phenomenon. The problem confrontation was raised by the 'protector-receiver' principle and by the theory of the Law promotional function, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of combined traditional policies for environmental management and modern ones, which, adopting the concept of premial sanction, are capable of directing behaviors, being, therefore, more connected to the current project of State Environmental Law.

The Cinematisation of Computer and Console Games : Aesthetic and Commercial Convergence in the Film and Game Industries

Majek, Dee January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the growing trend of cinematisation in computer and console games, where both visual styles and industrial practices are concerned. The ever-increasing runtime of cinematic cutscenes in games, and the stylization of game graphics in accordance with established film genres are of primary focus regarding the gaming industry's absorption and interpretation of cinematic visuals. Comparisons of film-game convergence are based on the proliferation of non-gameplay promotional trailers and their role in hype-generation; as well as game producer strategies of franchising, cross-promotion, and initial-sales business model. Comparison is thus accomplished with regards to a number of fundamental similarities in both industries' business and commercial tactics, as stemming from the risk and reward-based investment financing system prevalent in both industries. Finally, a selection of user and industry professional video responses to the aforementioned trends are examined, both for their value in counter-balancing the assumptions of success which often follow staggeringly high initial sales figures; and for their value in layering the depth of film-game convergence even further, as they respond to the recent, filmic trends in games using the very language of film.

Main Labor Breaches of the Peruvian State in the Framework of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States / Principales Incumplimientos Laborales del Estado Peruano en el Marco del Tratado de Libre Comercio con Estados Unidos

Mendoza Choque, Luis Enrique 10 April 2018 (has links)
The following article begins with the old and close relationship between labor rights and international trade, a relationship that has become more important given the creation of new instruments, mechanisms and sanctions. The labor chapter of the Peru-US Trade Promotion Agreement and its application can be analyzed from different perspectives. The following article sets its focus on three distinct facets: the principle of progressivity of social rights; the legal nature of free trade agreements; and two of the current promotional labor regimes in Peruvian legislation. The article references two complaints of non-compliance with the labor chapter presented by Peruvian unions during the period since the Free Trade Agreement entered into force. Finally, the report presents conclusions that aim to contribute to the debate on this subject.

Altmann, Alexandre 01 December 2008 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-22T16:23:42Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Alexandre Altmann.pdf: 680457 bytes, checksum: 010a71487f7d6e1c870c214bc85e10fb (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-22T16:23:42Z (GMT). In Brazil, the environmental law is composed almost exclusively of instruments of command-andcontrol and, even with all this legal and institutional apparatus, environmental degradation reaches alarming levels. This finding leads various sectors of society questioning about the possibility of adoption of instruments of positive incentive towards the preservation of nature. The approach chosen to address the issue of positive incentives is about one of the biggest challenges for nature conservation in Brazil today: the gallery forests. For the environmental law that approach is paradigmatic because, in spite of finding themselves legally protected since 1934, the gallery forests are still being systematically degraded. This is a scathing example of what happens with other environmental issues in the country. The degradation of gallery forests is one of the most urgent problems to be solved by Brazilian society, which depends on the ecological services they provide, whether in cities or in the field. The concept of ecological services enables the design of new mechanisms for the conservation of the environment, especially in private areas and regarding the value of indirect use of ecosystems, major barriers to the effectiveness of environmental law today. This concept has emerged an instrument able to operationalize the positive incentives for conservation: Payment for Ecological Services (PES). The PSE aims internalization of positive externalities and compensate the opportunity costs of those who contribute to the conservation of nature. The question that this study seeks answer refers to the possibility and conditions for the adoption of the PSE in Brazil as a positive incentive to those who preserve and recover the gallery forests. To that end, was carried out extensive literature search, particularly in foreign literature, because in Brazil the subject is new and lacks theoretical basis, particularly concerning legal aspects.
