Modos reflexivos e auto-relatos de profissionais sobre as carreiras proteana e sem-fronteiras

A Reflexividade é uma natureza humana universal que caracteriza os seres humanos da mesma maneira genérica em qualquer época e lugar. Esta dissertação investigou o processo reflexivo de profissionais no contexto da carreira contemporânea. Para tanto foram realizados cinco estudos. O primeiro revisou artigos relacionados às carreiras proteanas e sem-fronteiras publicados nos últimos dez anos. O segundo apresentou e explorou as qualidades psicométricas da Escala de Reflexividade. O terceiro consistiu na validação das escalas de Atitudes de Carreira Proteanas e de Atitudes de Carreira Sem-fronteira. O quarto investigou correlações entre os estilos de carreira, a reflexividade e os valores organizacionais e comparou diferentes grupos. Finalmente, o quinto estudo investigou a relação entre estilos reflexivos e as atitudes de carreira proteanas e sem-fronteiras. / Reflexivity is a universal human nature that characterizes human beings in the same general way at any time and place. This thesis investigates the reflexive process of professionals in the context of contemporary careers. Therefore, five studies were conducted. The first study revised articles related to protean and boundaryless careers published in the last ten years. The second, proposed and explored the psychometric properties of the Reflexivity Scale. The third involved the validation of the Protean Career Attitudes Scale and of the Boundaryless Career Attitudes Scale. The fourth study investigated correlations between career styles, reflexivity and organizational values, and compared different groups. Finally, the fifth study investigated the relationship between different styles of reflexivity and the implementation of protean and boundaryless career attitudes.

Gestão de carreira no início da carreira profissional: um estudo sobre atitude de carreira de jovens discentes da graduação da FEA/USP / Career management at the beginning of the professional career: a study on the career attitude of students from FEA/USP

Os estudos sobre gestão de carreira, quer sejam no âmbito organizacional ou individual, são algo recente na literatura. Atualmente, entende-se que a responsabilidade pela gestão da carreira é das pessoas e que a sua consolidação ocorre ao longo das experiências de vida pessoal e profissional. Com as mudanças originadas pela globalização, novas tecnologias e aumento da competitividade, o contrato psicológico de trabalho migrou de um modelo de emprego vitalício para um modelo de independência e autonomia, onde o indivíduo é responsável pela gestão e desenvolvimento de sua própria carreira. Essas mudanças influenciaram os conceito de carreira e demandaram o desenvolvimento de teorias que considerassem aspectos relacionados à mobilidade, à busca de um sentido para o trabalho e ao sucesso psicológico, tais como a carreira sem fronteiras e a carreira proteana. Considerando a escassez e a necessidade de estudos empíricos no Brasil acerca do tema, o presente trabalho teve como principal objetivo identificar e analisar se a atitude de carreira de universitários tem relação com as novas teorias de carreira. O perfil de carreira agrupa os indivíduos de acordo com a presença de atitudes de carreira proteana, representada pelas dimensões autodirecionamento e orientação pelos valores, e de atitudes de carreira sem fronteiras, representada pelas dimensões mobilidade psicológica e mobilidade física. Esta é uma pesquisa descritiva, com características quantitativa e qualitativa. A coleta de dados foi realizada através da aplicação de um questionário, cujas escalas foram validadas nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil, bem como pela realização de entrevistas. A amostra é não probabilística e intencional e foi formada por 140 estudantes de graduação da Faculdade de Administração, Economia e Contabilidade da USP. A validação da escala de atitude de carreira foi feita a partir da análise da confiabilidade e consistência interna do instrumento de pesquisa, com base no software SPSS - Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Os resultados obtidos através da técnica de análise fatorial foram satisfatórios no que tange à confiabilidade, utilizado o software SPSS. Com base nos dados estatísticos, os escores gerais de carreiras proteana e sem fronteiras apresentaram uma relação positiva, indicando a existência de uma correlação geral entre os dois modelos de carreira para a amostra deste estudo. Os resultados desta pesquisa, no geral, apontam a presença de direcionamento pelos valores, autodirecionamento da carreira, mobilidades física e psicológica, indicando que os respondentes apresentam atitudes de carreiras favoráveis para enfrentar as mudanças exigidas pelo mercado de trabalho. Estas atitudes são mais relevantes para os que fizeram a disciplina Gestão de Carreira, o que também foi confirmado pelas entrevistas. Com isso, conclui-se ser relevante discutir a gestão de carreira no início da carreira profissional desses jovens discentes, que estão entrando no mercado de trabalho. Para esses jovens, essas novas carreiras são uma realidade, ainda que se verifique se tratar de um movimento, não podendo ser ainda considerado como fato para todos os indivíduos pesquisados. Acompanhar a trajetória profissional desses alunos, ampliando a pesquisa com outras variáveis, agregará ao estudo um maior detalhamento sobre as inclinações de carreiras desses indivíduos. Ainda, as discussões deste trabalho, além de contribuírem para as reflexões acerca do assunto gestão de carreira no Brasil, abrem portas para pesquisas com egressos que estejam no mercado de trabalho há mais tempo, ampliando a discussão dos resultados de correlação entre os modelos de carreira proteana e sem fronteiras. / Studies on career management, whether organizational or individual, are something new in literature. Currently, it is understood that the responsibility for the career management is of the person and that its consolidation takes place over the experiences of personal and professional life. With the changes arising from globalization, new technologies and increased competition, the work\'s psychological contract migrated from a lifetime employment model to an independence and autonomy model, where the individual is responsible for the management and development of his own career. These changes influenced the concept of career and demanded the development of theories that consider aspects related to mobility, the search of a meaning to work and psychological success, such as boundaryless career and protean career. Considering the scarcity and the need for empirical studies in Brazil on the subject, this study aimed to identify and analyze if the career atitude of university students is related to the new career theories. The career profile groups the individuals according to the presence of protean career attitudes, represented by self-direction dimensions and values orientation, and attitudes of a boundaryless career, represented by the dimensions of psychological mobility and physical mobility. This is a descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Data collection was performed by applying a questionnaire, whose scales were validated in the United States and Brazil, as well as conducting interviews. The sample is not probabilistic and intentional and was formed by 140 undergraduate students of USP\'s School of Business, Economics and Accounting. The validation of the career attitude scale was made by the analysis of reliability and internal consistency of the survey instrument based on SPSS - Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results obtained through the factorial analysis technique were satisfactory in terms of reliability, using the SPSS software. Based on statistics, the overall scoresof protean careers and boundaryless career presented a positive relation, indicating the existence of a general correlation between the two career models for this study\'s sample. Theresults of this research, in general, indicate the presence of targeting by values, career selfdirection, physical and psychological mobility, indicating that respondents have career attitudes favorable to face the changes required by the labor market. These attitudes are more relevant to those who made the Career Management discipline, which was also confirmed by interviews. Thereby, it is concluded to be relevant to discuss career management at the beginning of the career of these young students, who are entering the labor market. For these young people, these new careers are a reality, even if it is verified to be a movement, and can not be considered as a fact for all individuals surveyed. Follow the career path of these students, expanding research with other variables, will add to the study greater details on the slopes careers of these individuals. The discussions of this work, besides contributing to the reflections on the career management business in Brazil, opens doors for research with graduates who are in the labor market longer, expanding the discussion of correlation results between protean and boundaryless career models.

Through the analysis of a case study with 56 journalists from Grupo Estado editorial office, the survey focused on how the journalists perform and adapt their careers in an increasingly transforming scenario, under the influence of new technologies and media convergence. Life style and autonomy and independence were the prevalent carrer anchors found among editors and reporters. It was observed that not only reporters with this profile have better chances to become editors but the latter will have preference for hiring reporters with similar career anchors. Also, at least within this case study, to verify elements that include journalists within boundaryless and protean careers were observed / Nesta pesquisa foram identificadas relações entre as âncoras de carreira e as atividades dos jornalistas que atuam dentro de uma grande empresa de comunicação impressa. Por meio de pesquisa descritiva de estudo de caso com 56 jornalistas que atuam na redação do Grupo Estado, procurou-se elucidar de que forma o contexto em transformação em que estes jornalistas atuam, sob influência das novas tecnologias e da convergência dos meios, interfere em sua carreira. As âncoras de carreira mais encontradas foram as de estilo de vida e autonomia e independência, sendo esta última com maior incidência tanto em editores como em repórteres. Constatou-se que tanto repórteres com esta âncora têm mais chance de tornarem-se editores quanto que editores têm mais propensão a contratar repórteres com esta âncora. Foi possível também observar elementos que, ao menos dentro deste estudo de caso, incluem os jornalistas dentro das carreiras sem fronteiras e das carreiras proteanas

Culture and social learning in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and children (Homo sapiens)

Culture involves the handing down of information, traditions, knowledge and skill, views and ideals from one individual to another and across generations by means of social transmission expressed in manufactured objects and behaviour. The evolution of cumulative culture, a human specific capacity, makes possible an inheritance system that is governed by the same Darwinian principles as biological evolution. Cumulative culture has made possible the build-up or ratcheting effect of knowledge and traditions that when put together allow for advanced technology, medicine, education and other highly advanced cognitive processes that characterise humans from non human animals. This dissertation dedicates the first chapter to review the literature pertaining to this topic; describing various types of social learning processes and methodological approaches that are used to query and broadly describe the process of culture in various animals. The following two chapters (2 and 3) present three experiments that provide methodical and systematic exploration of the social transmission process which occurs in chimpanzees; using 3 artificial foraging devices, the 3 studies systematically demonstrate that chimpanzees have the capacity to transmit culture from one individual to another and serially across neighbouring communities- providing laboratory evidence of behavioural variation analogous to that observed in the wild. Chapter 4 then goes on to describe an experiment that tests a number of hypothesised biases in cultural transmission. Looking specifically at social dynamics at play during the transmission of skill within ape groups - I systematically analyse the effects of directed social learning; focusing on kin and status based strategies that are characteristic of group living apes. Chapter 5 is an original, empirical and methodically comparative analysis of hierarchically organized behaviour in human children and chimpanzees using a hierarchically organized artificial fruit. The final chapter (6) discusses the findings of each of the five experiments and compares the results to findings at other captive and wild research sites. I then broaden the topic to explore how the findings relate to broad issues in literature and provide a framework for future research and for understanding the complex mechanisms of intelligent systems.

Yet, conventional tin loaf was prepared by ways of comparison. The loaves were evaluated in relation to sensorial acceptance and were submitted to analysis of pH, acidity and specific volume. The pH and acidity of fresh dough were also analyzed. These analysis were carried out in third copy with five repetitions. Out of the tested formulations only one was selected based in results of physical chemical and sensorial tests. The proteins, lipids, ashes, chlorides and calcium concentrations were determinated only in selected formulation and in conventional product, in third copy, with three repetitions. Acidity reduction and pH increase were checked in fresh dough, probably due to the addition of calcium carbonate, however, these modifications did not result in volume reduction of the loaves. In the sensorial test, the formulation F2 presented the best acceptance, being for that reason selected. In the chemical composition analysis it was checked that the addition of whey protean concentrate and calcium carbonate to the tin loaf formulation, resulted in a final product with greater nutritional value as compared to conventional bread, especially in terms of proteins and calcium. In the case of calcium, the increment was sufficient to supply around 70% of the DRI for adults. Tin loaf enrichment with WPC and calcium carbonate establish as an important alternative in the elevation of calcium consumption, especially for the good acceptance and low cost of the product as compared to milk and derivatives, which are the main sources of this mineral. / Neste trabalho o objetivo foi enriquecer pão de forma com 7,5% de concentrado protéico de soro de leite (CPS) e com carbonato de cálcio, nas concentrações de 1,5%, 2,0% e 2,5%, disponibilizando um produto final com maior concentração de proteínas e minerais, especialmente o mineral cálcio. Ainda, foi elaborado pão de forma convencional, para fins de comparação. Os pães foram avaliados quanto a aceitação sensorial e submetidos às análises de pH, acidez e volume específico. O pH e acidez da massa fresca também foram analisados. Essas análises foram realizadas em triplicata, com cinco repetições. Das três formulações testadas somente uma foi selecionada com base nos resultados dos testes físico-químicos e sensoriais. As concentrações de proteínas, lipídeos, cinzas, cloretos e cálcio foram determinadas somente no pão selecionado e no produto convencional, em triplicata, com três repetições. Foram verificados na massa fresca redução de acidez e aumento de pH devidos provavelmente a adição do carbonato de cálcio, entretanto, essas modificações não implicaram na redução de volume dos pães elaborados. No teste sensorial, a formulação F2 apresentou a melhor aceitação, sendo, por essa razão, selecionada. Nas análises de composição química foi verificado que a adição de concentrado protéico de soro de leite e carbonato de cálcio à formulação de pão de forma resultou em produto final com maior valor nutricional, quando comparado ao pão convencional, especialmente em termos de proteínas e cálcio. No caso do cálcio, o incremento foi suficiente para fornecer em torno de 70% da IDR para adultos. O enriquecimento de pão de forma com CPS e carbonato de cálcio se constitui em importante alternativa na elevação do consumo de cálcio, especialmente pela boa aceitação e baixo custo do produto, quando comparado ao leite e derivados, principais fontes desse mineral.

Career studies have undergone a profound transformation over the past decades and the responsibility for career management that, initially, was the company assumed new contours through to the professional, now called 'protean' for its ability to adapt to changes and environment, the rudder of his career. This change has given him (or her) more freedom to set his/her course and personal priorities, but to hold it more uncertainties and responsibilities providing it with the need to maintain employability. At the management level, professionals seeking executive education courses, as the Master in Business Administration (MBA), as a tool for career management, enabling it to stay employable or to make career moves. However, criticism of the actual contribution of these courses for the career of its graduates raise the need to assess what the real contribution of an MBA for career, from the perspective of those who made such a course and observed the reflections that the title generated in their careers. Therefore, a quantitative survey was conducted with a sample of 2,027 graduates, over the past 10 years, MBA courses at FGV. The results showed that the sample respondents professionals report having experienced positive results in career and who have been successful, moreover, have Proteins features and demonstrate needs to manage and develop your career. / A década de 90 foi um período de transformações, especialmente, no desenrolar de dois temas: a discussão sobre carreiras e a expansão dos MBAs no Brasil. Os estudos de carreira passaram por uma profunda transformação ao longo das últimas décadas e a responsabilidade pela gestão de carreira que, inicialmente, era da empresa, assumiu novos contornos passando para o profissional, agora denominado 'proteano', por sua capacidade de se adaptar às mudanças e aos ambientes, o leme de sua carreira. Esta mudança lhe conferiu mais liberdade na definição de seus rumos e de suas prioridades pessoais, mas lhe imputou mais incertezas e responsabilidades dotando-o da necessidade de manter sua empregabilidade. No nível gerencial profissionais buscam cursos de educação executiva, como o Master in Business Administration (MBA), como instrumento para a gestão de carreira, se capacitando para se manter empregável ou para fazer movimentos de carreira. No entanto, as críticas sobre a contribuição real destes cursos para a carreira de seus egressos levantam a necessidade de se avaliar qual a real contribuição de cursar um MBA para a carreira, sob a ótica daqueles que fizeram tal curso e observaram os reflexos que o título gerou em suas carreiras. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa quantitativa com uma amostra de 2.027 egressos, dos últimos 10 anos, de cursos de MBA da FGV. Os resultados revelam que os profissionais respondentes da amostra relatam ter observado resultados positivos na carreira e que foram bem sucedidos, além disto, apresentam características proteanas e demonstram necessidades de gerenciar e desenvolver sua carreira.

Proteus : A new predictor for protean segments

The discovery of intrinsically disordered proteins has led to a paradigm shift in protein science. Many disordered proteins have regions that can transform from a disordered state to an ordered. Those regions are called protean segments. Many intrinsically disordered proteins are involved in diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Down's syndrome, which makes them prime targets for medical research. As protean segments often are the functional part of the proteins, it is of great importance to identify those regions. This report presents Proteus, a new predictor for protean segments. The predictor uses Random Forest (a decision tree ensemble classifier) and is trained on features derived from amino acid sequence and conservation data. Proteus compares favourably to state of the art predictors and performs better than the competition on all four metrics: precision, recall, F1 and MCC. The report also looks at the differences between protean and non-protean regions and how they differ between the two datasets that were used to train the predictor.

Engineering the angiotensin II type 1 receptor for structural studies

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are eukaryotic integral membrane proteins that perform transmembrane signal transduction. Due to their pivotal role in a wide range of essential physiological functions GPCRs represent a high proportion of all drug targets. High resolution X-ray structures of GPCRs are however underrepresented in the Protein Data Bank. This is due to their instability in detergent, low expression levels and the presence of misfolded receptors in many heterologous expression systems. The objective of this project was to engineer the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), a human GPCR, to make it suitable for structural studies. It was determined that detergentsolubilised AT1R was thermostable with antagonist bound with an apparent Tm of ~45°C, which was sufficiently stable for purification without further thermostabilisation by rational mutagenesis. Two expression systems were then evaluated for large-scale production of AT1R, namely baculovirus-mediated expression in insect cells and mammalian expression in HEK293 cells. Radioligand binding assays showed that only the mammalian system produced sufficient quantities of active AT1R for structural studies. Expression in the mammalian system was further optimised to approximately 6 mg/L. An AT1R-GFP fusion was created to examine membrane localisation using confocal laser scanning microscopy, to assay expression levels, to select highly expressing monoclonal cell lines using fluorescence activated flow cytometry and to develop a fluorescence size-exclusion chromatographybased assay to examine the suitability of 12 different ligands for co-crystallization. AT1R was also engineered to facilitate crystallisation, including C-terminal truncations to remove predicted disordered regions and bacteriophage T4-lysozyme being added to the third intracellular loop to provide additional points of contact for crystallisation, which increased the apparent Tm by approximately 10°C. All modified versions of AT1R were assessed for expression, stability and monodispersity. Additionally a rapid western blotting based assay was developed for the detection of unfolded membrane proteins, which will have wide applicability in the field.

Professional development through community arts projects: a study of the influence of Thesele Creative Society on the career paths of five people

Thesis (M.A.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Culture Management, 2013 / This report examines the ways in which a community theatre project called Thesele Creative Society (TCS) active in Soweto, South Africa, influenced and broadened the career paths of five people who were directly marginalized by the Apartheid government’s policies. I focus on the period from 1991-1995, which corresponds to the transition to democracy, signifying increased accessibility within the country to a variety of career options for black people synchronous with an entry into a differently challenging global economy. In many parts of the world, community arts projects are known to enhance the ability of their participants to successfully participate in the job market and learn skills that are useful in life more generally. South African community arts projects are understood to have played a significant role in, inter alia, the economic and skills development of its participants over the last 60 years. Although located in a remote periphery of the arts, culture and heritage sector, with its impact running a risk of being undercounted within the creative economy, TCS proved to be one of the community arts projects with socio-economic bearing. Selected through purposive sampling, the five main participants of this study present intrinsically interesting cases through which I identify the types of skills provided by TCS within the community theatre environment, as well as the methodology employed in transferring these skills. I also show that the background and practice of TCS provides lessons in terms of the application of self-reliance and self-determination principles, and sequentially argue that the application of these principles is necessary for the advancement of many disadvantaged communities in South Africa. I create links between the qualitative data I have collected in the form of interviews with wider issues of creative economies, complementing existing theoretical and ideological studies of community arts practice with a practically grounded approach. This research draws attention to, and demonstrates the importance of, the study of community arts projects, as opposed to community arts centres, which have been the virtually exclusive focus of prior research.
