Μπουφαρδέα, Ευαγγελία 14 February 2012 (has links)
The rapid spread of Internet has caused significant changes in many sectors of the economy and society worldwide. From those changes could not be left out of education. With the rapid development of information technologies and technology, a new form of education appears, e-learning (distance education), which revolutionized the educational process. Furthermore, while the World Wide Web gradually transforms into Semantic Web, new standards and models (XML, RDF, OWL) are evolving in order to launch this inquiry. The storage, presentation, transmission and search of information according to those standards open up new horizons in the utilization of the Web. Ontologies are increasingly get used for knowledge representation. A large ontology contains useful data for a system of distance education, deserves someone to investigate the "hidden knowledge", i.e. to discover possible associations or to find patterns or forms that are repeated or extreme events. This thesis is a demonstration of technology for accurate and timely prediction of the performance of students in a system of distance education. The basic idea was to design an ontology that can store knowledge about the students’ skills (user profile) in relation to a specific educational purpose (PLI23 - Telematics, Internet of the Hellenic Open University, which has a very specific matter and 4 mandatory projects per year). Then we present the results of a study analyzing student data mining techniques (data mining-classification). The discovery rules took place via the tool Weka. The result is a knowledge base which is the appropriate tool (Interface teacher) may provide that a student needs on a particular topic (in addition to material help from the teacher), etc.

Beauty And The Beast: The Attractiveness Bias In An Online Peer Mentoring Program

Garcia, Carollaine 01 January 2012 (has links)
The bias against attractiveness is fairly implicit and furthermore, powerfully impacts people’s subsequent impressions of and behaviors toward others (Cash, Gillen, & Burns, 1977; Dion et al., 1972). Pallet, Link and Lee (2010) examined the effect of various facial spatial configurations on attractiveness and found that raters rated faces as most attractive when the eyeto-mouth ratio approximated 36% of the face length (the "golden ratio"), which coincides with the measurements of an average and thus more attractive face. The present study examined the extent to which the distance of these objectively measured facial features affected mentors’ perceptions of their protégés, the subsequent mentoring given to them, and the protégés’ own behavior (e.g. seek feedback, request specific information). The gender composition of the mentor-protégé dyad was expected to moderate these relationships. I also examined whether, given the expected effects of facial measurements, withholding access to visual cues would affect mentor perceptions and behavior. Participants were 118 mentor/protégé dyads from a large Southeastern university who volunteered to participate in a formal online peer mentoring program. After seeing their protégés’ profiles (and for those in the experimental condition, a picture), mentors chatted with their protégés once a week for 30 minutes for a total of 4 weeks. Results indicated that protégés with facial features moderately distant from the golden ratio were perceived as more similar by mentors in same-gender dyads and received greater mentoring than did protégés closest and farthest from the golden ratio. In opposite-gender dyads, however, mentors reported greater similarity toward those that were farthest from the golden ratio but provided the greatest mentoring to those closest to the golden ratio. The relationship iv between facial measurements and protégé proactivity was moderated by whether or not their mentor had access to their picture. While protégés closest to the ratio were more proactive in the picture condition, those that were farthest from it were more proactive in the non-picture condition. Proactivity was as expected associated with greater levels of mentoring, which was ultimately related to a more fulfilled and beneficial relationship for protégés (i.e. less stress, greater self-efficacy and satisfaction). The results of this study indicate that facial measurements are associated with both differences in mentor and in protégé behavior and that the specific nature of these relationships differs as a function of gender composition. Implications for practice and theory will be discussed

Botha, Deonie Francesca 06 1900 (has links)
Structured mentoring was identified as a method to develop the professional and personal skills of the employees of the National Library of South Africa in order to adjust to local and global changes. A conceptual framework for the study of mentoring, as developed by Hunt and Michael, was therefore critically adapted in order to investigate fully the phenomenon of "mentoring" by means of an exploratory literature review. The findings of the literature review are supported by an empirical survey to test the suitability of the National Library of South Africa as contextual environment for the application of mentoring, as well as the willingness of its employees to participate in mentoring. This culminated in an analysis and interpretation of the findings and formulation of conclusions regarding the two abovementioned requirements for the successful application of mentoring. The study ends with recommendations for further investigation into aspects of mentoring which could not be covered in this study. / Information Science / M. Inf.

Novice teachers' perceptions of school-based induction programmes at selected primary schools in Windhoek, Namibia

Dishena, Robert Nghinaakundaama 12 1900 (has links)
School-based induction programmes largely focus on informing beginner teachers about the school culture and infrastructure, yet, the core business of education is teaching and learning. A consensus is, however, growing among educators and researchers that despite the positive experiences novice teachers experience during school-based induction programmes, they also experience challenges which affect their perceptions of school-based induction. Despite those challenges in the education sector, hope for the future, as guided by Vision 2030, still remains with one essential human resource: the teachers themselves. Therefore, if novice teachers are to impact profoundly on the learners’ academic achievement, then quality induction programmes must be in place in Namibian schools in order to support their instructional growth. A comprehensive nation-wide induction effort with high emphasise on mentoring will accelerate novice teacher efficacy and consequently learner learning. The purpose of this research study was to identify beginner teachers’ perceptions of school-based induction at selected primary schools in Windhoek and suggested a framework which may inform future research efforts and improve the application of school-based induction. To do this, a qualitative research methodology was preferred to assess the perceptions of novice teachers at the selected schools. Eight beginner teachers and four Heads of Departments participated in the study. The result draws attention to the professional enculturation of beginner teachers, but notably, compels practical reconsideration on how school-based induction is practised in light of beginner teacher growth and sustainability. / Educational Management and Leadership / M.
