Morphological and Physiological Responses of Senegalia senegal (L.) Britton Provenances to Drought, Salinity, and Fertility

Sarr, Mame Sokhna 22 May 2017 (has links)
Increasing drought and salinity tolerances in economically important trees adapted to dry land areas is key challenge for maintaining the socioeconomic welfare of dry land areas. Strategies to improve drought and salt tolerance must examine the tree physiological mechanisms that link to the trees survival and growth. This study examined physiological adaptive traits allowing Senegalia senegal to grow better in both saline and dry lands. We conducted two greenhouse experiments and one field study to characterize growth, photosynthetic capacity, water use efficiency (WUE) and gum arabic yield potential among different Senegalia senegal provenances. In the first experiment, we tested early growth and photosynthetic response of seed sources to a cyclic drought treatment. The second greenhouse study examined seed source response to drought, salinity and fertility conditions. Gum yield assessment, growth and WUE of mature trees were determined from a field trial. In general, results showed a high intra genetic variability of Senegalia senegal on gum yield, biomass accumulation and growth. Ngane provenance presented superior growth characteristics as both mature trees and seedlings and exhibited a more conservative water use strategy under drought. Both greenhouse studies revealed similar photosynthetic capacity among Senegalia senegal genotypes when conditions are not limiting. However, when factors such as salinity, fertility and severe drought are involved, different physiological and morphological responses appear and at times this was dependent on seed source. But, at moderate drought stress (chapter 2), no drought by provenance interaction was found. Results of chapter 3 revealed that Ngane has larger stomata with low density in comparison with Diamenar and Kidira provenances. With the exception of Ng21B1, all seed sources displayed similar adaptations to salt stress in term of biomass accumulation. Fertilizer increased total biomass of all seed sources from 63% to 213% for Ng21B1 and K17B19, respectively. However, salinity reduced the fertilizer effect on biomass increment. Leaf gas exchanges were affected by salinity and fertilizer within various responses among seed sources. Results of chapter 4 revealed that gum yield was found to be positively correlated with tree height, crown width, stem volume index and crown area index. Ngane and Diamenar appeared the best provenances in term of annual gum yield per hectare. Diamenar had a higher survival rate than Ngane. This finding reveals the need to consider the tradeoff between tree survival rate and individual tree gum yield in Senegalia senegal stands. In addition to being more sensitive to salinity, Ngane also seems to be more susceptible to low soil pH in terms of survival, but this result needs to be tested further. This study suggests that improvement of gum arabic production can be possible through genetic selection. But, for the best adapted genotypes, research should explore new genetic combination and investigate physiology and genetic diversity. Moreover, the findings on the relationship between soil pH and tree survival rate suggests a need for care in selecting appropriate sites for Senegalia senegal stands. Therefore, silviculture practices as well as genetic selection appear critical in improving gum arabic production. / Ph. D.

Lessard, Bianca 17 February 2021 (has links)
This paper aims to elucidate the main issues that characterize the current art market in order to present, assess and evaluate potential solutions stemming from blockchain technology. This market is indeed grappling with certain difficulties of authenticity and authentication of works of art: there is even signs of a crisis of expertise. At the moment, it is also burdensome to establish the provenance of art circulating on the market for different reasons. Firstly, because the market is very fragile and second, because it seems to have failed to take advantage of technologies in time. Finally, we can witness a lack of transparency, mainly due to the desire for confidentiality and secrecy which reigns as much among art dealers as among collectors. The increasing development of decentralized technologies has enabled progress in several industries recently, and it appears that it could offer a certain support within the art market due to their characteristics of immutability, transparency and security. We will therefore be able to see the usefulness of distributed ledgers, smart contracts and tokenization to alleviate the problems we have observed. The fact remains, however, that the general adoption of blockchain technology in such a secular industry is not without limits It will therefore be necessary to study the challenges this new technology will have to overcome in order to guarantee the authenticity and provenance of art, as well as price transparency. Finally, in order to ensure a balanced and profitable adoption in the long term, it will be essential to take into account the interests of the various stakeholders involved.

[en] AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS EXPLAINABLE THROUGH DATA PROVENANCE / [pt] SISTEMAS AUTÔNOMOS EXPLICÁVEIS POR MEIO DE PROVENIÊNCIA DE DADOS

TASSIO FERENZINI MARTINS SIRQUEIRA 25 June 2020 (has links)
[en] Determining the data provenance, that is, the process that led to those data, is vital in many areas, especially when it is essential that the results or actions be reliable. With the increasing number of applications based on artificial intelligence, the need has been created to make them capable of explaining their behavior and be responsive to their decisions. This is a challenge especially if the applications are distributed, and composed of multiple autonomous agents, forming a Multiagent System (MAS). A key way of making such systems explicable is to track the agent s behavior, that is, to record the source of their actions and reasoning, as in an omniscient debugging. Although the idea of provenance has already been explored in some contexts, it has not been extensively explored in the context of MAS, leaving many questions to be understood and addressed. Our objective in this work is to justify the importance of the data provenance to MAS, discussing which questions can be answered regarding the behavior of MAS using the provenance and illustrating, through application scenarios, to demonstrate the benefits that provenance provides to reply to these questions. This study involves the creation of a software framework, called FProvW3C, which supports the collects and stores the provenance of the data produced by the MAS, which was integrated with the platform BDI4JADE (41), forming what we call Prov-BDI4JADE. Through this platform, using examples of autonomous systems, we have rigorously demonstrated that the use of data provenance in MAS is a solid solution to make the agent’s reasoning and action process transparent.

Lebel Desrosiers, Simon 04 1900 (has links)
We studied two red oak stands at the northern distribution limit of the species in Quebec as a means to reconstruct regeneration history and assess which factors govern early regeneration. To do so, we conducted a thorough dendrochronological study of the stands as well as germination and seedling growth experiments, both in the field and in the greenhouse, of four red oak provenances (south-north gradient), with and without large herbivory, and along various soil nutrient levels following fertilization. Stands have similar age structures with red oak establishment coinciding with the last major fire disturbance in the area in the early 1920s. However, stands differ in regard to tree species composition and density, suggesting differences in fire disturbance regime or ecological succession status prior to fire. Site had the largest influence on red oak regeneration. Seedlings at the site with the highest tree density, LAI and soil water availability exhibited a 29 % higher survival rate. Protection against large herbivory also significantly impacted red oak seedling performance, leading to a 16 % higher survival rate as well as greater leaf size for three of the four provenances studied. Germination, survival and growth also significantly differed between provenances. The local (northernmost) provenance exhibited the poorest overall performance with 28 to 42 % lower germination, survival and growth rates in the two experiments, while the two southernmost provenances exhibited superior germination and sprout survival in the greenhouse and higher survival in the field. An increase in soil nutrient availability was beneficial to red oak in the greenhouse, but only marginally benefited survival and growth in the field, suggesting that this factor is of less importance than other factors (e.g. water and light availability) for red oak early regeneration. Our findings suggest that silvicultural efforts to favor red oak should focus on site and provenance selection, and that water availability is currently limiting red oak regeneration success at acorn and early seedling life stages (i.e. yearlings) near its northern distribution limit.

Semantic representation of provenance and contextual information in scientific research

Brahaj, Armand 15 November 2016 (has links)
Computational and information technology is one of the biggest advancement of the last century, a revolution that is influencing the way we approach social and technical problems in our day to day life. While these technologies have already influenced the research activity per sé, it is to be expected that these innovations will significantly influence the publishing and sharing of scientific results as well. So far, scientific publications have relied on limited result data attached inline in research paper publications. Establishments supporting research are pushing for concrete solutions that allow dissemination, share and reuse of research results. Reports such as “Riding the Wave - How Europe can gain from the rising tide of scientific data” of the High Level Expert Group on Scientific Data, European Commission (High Level Expert Group on Scientific Data, October 2010) presents a vision where the challenges of diverse data formats, people and communities are avoided due to the application of technical, semantic and social features of interoperability. This research is an effort to address similar concerns from a technical perspective. Focus of this research is the exploration of a novel approach on supporting research data curation by developing a method and defining an automated data curation process where data can be easily annotated. As a contribution, this work offers a formal model (COSI) that allows integration of plentiful metadata that can be treated as logic concepts and not merely as literals. These concepts are defined in an ontology that allows among other actions, inference and reasoning operations. The second contribution of this work is associated to a pragmatic solution that facilitates annotation of metadata on the fly. This solution is referred as sheer curation and shows how data can be annotated (based on COSI) and published while investigations are executed.

Tafesse, Solomon January 2010 (has links)

The physical properties of the coarse fraction of the till (0.4 to 20 cm) and the surface boulders have been studied at two different sites in Sweden. The research work included: development of a new image analysis software for 3D size and shape measurements of particles; lithological analysis on multiple size fractions in till and magnetic susceptibility survey on coarse till clasts, surface boulders and local bedrock.

The new 3D image analysis method provides an enormous amount of size and shape data for each particle in the coarse fraction (2 to 20 cm) in till. The method is suitable for field study, cost effective and the software is executable in Matlab. The field imaging method together with the image analysis software give non subjective results of size and shape of coarse particles and makes it feasible and easy to study representative sample size, which is one tonne for testing clasts of size up to 20 cm.

The lithological analysis of the multiple size fraction of the till clasts has been investigated on six different size fractions of the till (0.4 to 20 cm); the result of the different samples from the two sites shows that this method can potentially be used as a stratigraphic tool in the areas where there is no unique indicator lithologies.

The magnetic susceptibility has been made on the surface boulders, the 6-20 cm till fraction and on insitu bedrock outcrops near to the study sites.

Acevedo Díaz, Juan Manuel January 2016 (has links)
The present work had as main objective to determine the prevalence of ovine Hidatidosis in the center of Slaughtering FRILISAC (slaughterhouse of Herbalists of Lima) during 2012-2015 and as specific objectives to determine the monthly prevalence and provenance prevalence, as well as economic losses produced. The work consisted in a quantitative research with retrospective, descriptive and analytical design. The study material consisted of monthly benefit record sheets according to species, sex and origin and monthly consolidated of organ confiscation by species. Was evaluated A total of 344,073 sheep, of both sexes and ages, from the departments of Lima, Ayacucho, Ica and Arequipa, registered in record sheets corresponding to the years 2012 to 2015. The overall prevalence of ovine Hidatidosis obtained during the four years of study was 0.32%. The months that presented the highest prevalences of ovine Hidatidosis were march, april, may and december. The department where the highest rates of prevalence were obtained was Ayacucho followed by Lima and Ica where the lowest prevalences were obtained, in the department of Arequipa was obtained any prevalence during the study. The most parasitized organ was the lung. The total economic losess for the confiscation of organs during the four years was US $ 1, 541.42 dollars. The obtained results demonstrate that there is a probably control by farmers to keep their animals from contracting the parasite, so there is a low risk for animal and human health in the departments of ovine tested.

A influência da evolução de altos estruturais em sucessões aluviais: exemplos do Ediacarano e do Cambriano da Bacia Camaquã (RS) / The influence of the evolution of structural highs in alluvial successions: examples from the Ediacaran and from the Cambrian of the Camaquã Basin (Southern Brazil)

Marconato, Andre 30 April 2010 (has links)
Sedimentary provenance is generally used aiming the reconstruction of the relations between sedimentary deposits and their source areas, in order to interpret the regional tectonic setting. An application that is less frequent in sedimentary provenance analysis is the detailed assessment of the changes in the source areas during the infilling history of a sedimentary basin and of the local variation of the provenance data in specific stratigraphic intervals. Such studies can result in important inferences concerning the configuration of adjacent structural highs, as well as information about tectonic events that are capable of changing the drainage network feeding the sedimentary basin. In the Camaquã Basin (RS) the Santa Bárbara and Guaritas groups register events of syn-sedimentary movement of structural highs, which caused the segmentation of the basin into sub-basins. The Santa Bárbara Group comprises siliciclastic successions distributed in three sub-basins separated by the Caçapava do Sul and Serra das Encantadas structural highs. The western sub-basin contains alluvial sandstones and conglomerates, siltstones and sandstones of fluvial and lacustrine environments, and alluvial fan conglomerates, disposed in a initial retrogradatinoal cycle, and two overlying progradational cycles, which are separated by a abrupt flooding surface. In the central sub-basin, the Santa Bárbara Group comprises a siltstone and sandstone succession with conglomerates at its base, followed by alluvial fan conglomeratic deposits in the middle part of the sedimentary succession, which in turn is succeeded by another succession of siltstones and sandstones at the top of the group. The Guaritas Group shows braided river deposits both at the base and the top of the unit, with interfingering of eolian, braided river and alluvial fan systems in the intermediate part of the succession. The deposits of the Santa Bárbara Group in the western sub-basin were investigated in detail through systematic studies of provenance both at the outcrop scale and in thin sections and by detrital zircon isotope analysis. The results show distinct source areas for the alluvial deposits of the base and the top of the unit, with a local sources for both of them. The lower deposits had source areas to the west and southwest of the basin, while the upper ones had source areas to the east of the basin, on the Caçapava do Sul High, suggesting a change in the configuration of the source areas, with its onset corresponding to the first conglomeratic level of the intermediate alluvial succession of the Santa Bárbara Group. The provenance data also shows that there is no significant lateral displacement deposits relative to their source areas, suggesting that the main displacement of the border faults was normal, as expected for rift basins. The sedimentary successions of the Santa Bárbara Group in the central sub-basin were preliminarily investigated through macroscopic provenance analysis. The data implies only in small changes of the source areas through the history of the basin, with source areas in the Serra das Encantadas High, which was then uplifted. In the upper conglomeratic deposits there is some contribution of lithoclasts from the Caçapava do Sul High. The sedimentary deposits of the top of the Guaritas Group were studied through macroscopic provenance analysis in alluvial fan and fluvial deposits, the latter covering the alluvial fans in erosive contact. The data points to strictly local provenance, from the Serra das Encantadas High in the alluvial fan deposits, while the fluvial deposits had also more distant source areas. This suggests that the Serra das Encantadas High subsided during this period, and was covered by the younger fluvial deposits. The collected data suggests that the Caçapava do Sul High uplift, which took place during the deposition of the Santa Bárbara Group and individualized the western sub-basin, triggered a progradation of the sedimentary deposits. This is not in accordance with the existing models, and could be explained as a result of both of an increase in the sedimentary input by erosion of unlithified sediments deposited on the Caçapava do Sul High and of the fall in the subsidence rates of the sedimentary basins due to a wide doming before the nucleation of the main border fault. Such progradation is registered in the alluvial successions of the Santa Bárbara Group in the western and central sub-basins. After the definition of the normal faulting in the eastern border of the structural high, an abrupt passage to distal facies took place in the occidental sub-basin, which was in turn was followed by progradation of clastic wedges on the top of the unit, while in the central sub-basin there is a retrogradation, suggesting that the uplift of the Caçapava do Sul High would have resulted in the capture of a main drainage system, that fed the entire basin, to the western basin graben, and so decreasing the sedimentary input to the central sub-basin. The Guaritas Group in its turn indicates a change in the depositional systems caused by the subsidence of the Serra das Encantadas High, which allowed the capture of drainage systems to the basin, thus increasing the sedimentary input and the substitution of the eolian and alluvial fan systems by braided fluvial systems.
