Bedarbystės patyrimas ir jo sąsajos su psichologine gerove / The unemployment experience and its relation with psychological well-being

Pasitelkiant mišriojo tipo nuosekliąją tiriamąją tyrimo strategiją disertacijoje nagrinėjamas bedarbystės patyrimo fenomenas bei atskleidžiamos bedarbystės patyrimo ir psichologinės gerovės sąsajos. Bedarbystės patyrimui analizuoti naudojamas iki šiol postsovietinėse šalyse empiriškai netikrintas teorinis M. Jahoda (1982) deprivacijos modelis, kurį sudaro šie komponentai (modelyje vadinami netiesioginėmis darbo naudomis): aktyvi veikla, laiko struktūra, socialiniai kontaktai, statusas bei kolektyvinis tikslas. Atlikus reprezentatyvų populiacijos tyrimą, M. Jahoda deprivacijos modelis patvirtintas Lietuvoje. Rasta, kad netiesioginės darbo naudos bei tiesioginė nauda teigiamai prognozuoja bedarbių psichologinę gerovę (optimalų funkcionavimą, subjektyviai suvokiamą gerą psichinę sveikatą bei subjektyviai suvokiamą gerą fizinę sveikatą). Kokybinių tyrimų radinių analizė atskleidė, kad bedarbystės patyrimo fenomenas pasireiškia kaip kokybiniai socialinių santykių, statuso ir identifikacijos, tikslų kūrimo, dienos struktūros, aktyvumo bei psichologinės gerovės pokyčiai. / Using sequential exploratory design of mixed-methods approach the phenomenon of unemployment experience and its relation with psychological well-being is analyzed in dissertation. Theoretical Jahoda’s (1982) deprivation model (composed of so called latent functions of employment – activity, time structure, social contact, status, and collective purpose), which has not been empirically tested in post-Soviet countries so far, is invoked for analysis of unemployment experience. Based on the results of a representative population study, Jahoda’s model was confirmed in Lithuania. Latent employment functions and manifest function positively predict psychological well-being (optimal functioning, subjectively perceived good mental health, and subjectively perceived good physical health) of the unemployed people. Analysis of the results of qualitative studies revealed that the phenomenon of unemployment experience manifests as qualitative changes in social relationships, status and identification, goal setting, daily structure, activity and psychological well-being.

The Association of Caregiver Unmet Needs with Psychological Well-being of Cancer Survivors: An Application of Interdependence Theory

Introduction: Cancer survivors continue to experience psychological distress and challenges in their daily lives long after the completion of treatment. Caregivers play a pivotal role in the lives of cancer survivors by providing support in various domains of their lives. The cancer experience between support persons and cancer survivors is intertwined. The interdependence theory will serve as a theoretical framework to guide the purposes of this study. Objective:The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of unmet needs of caregivers supporting long-term cancer survivors and explore how fulfilling the needs of caregivers influenced the psychological well-being of cancer survivors. Specifically, an emphasis was placed on exploring the level of dependence present in marital relationships, and how this impacted the relationship between caregiver unmet needs and the psychological outcomes of cancer survivors. Method: Data was drawn from The Cancer Support Persons’ Unmet Needs Survey (SPUNS) (Campbell et al., 2009) and The Cancer Survivors’ Unmet Needs Survey (SUNS) (Campbell et al., 2009). Regression models tested for significant interactions between caregiver unmet needs and factors influencing survivor dependence with psychological distress in cancer survivors. Results: Findings revealed main effects between caregivers’ depression, anxiety, and stress with the respective psychological outcomes in cancer survivors. Caregivers’ concerns about the future predicted elevated depression in cancer survivors. Caregivers with needs pertaining to information or emotions predicted higher anxiety in cancer survivors. Information needs, future concerns, and health care access and continuity needs of caregivers predicted higher survivor stress. Conversely, work and financial needs of caregivers predicted lower depression, anxiety and stress in cancer survivors. Significant interactions were found for caregivers’ concerns about the future by recurrence of diagnosis with decreased survivor anxiety, health care needs of support persons by recurrence of illness with increased survivor anxiety, caregivers’ personal needs by severity of illness with higher survivor anxiety, support persons’ emotional needs by severity of illness with lower survivor anxiety, caregivers’ emotional needs by severity of illness and decreased survivor stress, and finally, support persons’ health care needs by severity of illness with higher survivor stress. Conclusion: Findings did not fully support the hypotheses of this present study. Nonetheless, the significant results revealed in the findings would be useful to generate alternative hypotheses in future studies regarding interdependence, unmet needs and psychological well-being. The findings for the present study will also provide direction towards improvement in treating caregivers and cancer patients as a conglomerate, and inform programs, services and policies in cancer care.

Ageing well in the community : social representations of well-being promotion in later life

This thesis is a social psychological study on ideas of well-being in later life by older adults, staff members, and volunteers involved in community support. Social representations theory constitutes the theoretical lens through which social constructions of well-being are examined. This project constitutes an ethnography of how groups represent wellness in later life, and how they evaluate receiving and giving support. Three day centres and a scheme of home visits of a voluntary organisation in the United Kingdom were the main sites of this study. Participant observation and 54 in-depth interviews were the main data sources. The study shows that both clients and practitioners understand wellness in later life as the result of an active, independent, and gainful living. This idea was shared amongst all groups in both settings, indicating the prevalence of a hegemonic view of wellness. This view is present in public understandings and professional discourse on ageing well. Nevertheless, clients and practitioners also challenged this ideology of wellness by representing ageing both as experience of gains (e.g. vitality and autonomy) and limitations (e.g. frailty and social isolation). These views are represented via two binary oppositional themes: activity-passivity and independence dependence. Moreover, clients and practitioners highlight the importance of health, adaptation, and relationships of support to attain well-being in old age. The concept of canonic themata and the evidence of a complex representational field around the theme of ageing constitute important empirical insights with which to understand the sharedness of well-being amongst all groups. Differences were observed in the way in which clients and practitioners position themselves – the first groups as receivers of help, whereas the second one as providers of care. Moreover, clients represent themselves as active and independent despite being recipients of support. In negotiating their views of independence, they preserve a positive sense of identity and accept help from others. Cognitive polyphasia also characterises thinking about well-being: physical, psychological, social, and material elements interact to promote wellness. The study also sheds light on how communities of support make sense of their practices. The concept of representational project offered a rich theoretical insight into how groups represent well-being promotion in the charity. Both clients and practitioners represent well-being promotion as actions to preserve functionality and participation in the community. Therefore, two set of actions were mentioned in both settings: socio-emotive and practical support. Implications for well-being policies and community support were addressed.

The Influence of Religiosity on Psychological Well-Being and Life Satisfaction in an Elderly Population

abstract: ABSTRACT The major hypothesis tested in this research is that the psychological well-being and life satisfaction of elderly adult individuals can be predicted from religiosity (organizational and non-organizational religious beliefs and behaviors). The sample consisted of 142 adults between the ages of 65-90, with the majority in the 65-70 age group (48%) (SD = 1.176). The entire sample resides in the state of Arizona, in both urban and rural communities. Participants were administered a questionnaire which requested demographic information, and three instruments: the Duke University Religion Index (the DUREL), and the Affect Balance Scale and the Life Satisfaction Index - Z (LSIZ). Correlational and Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relation between these adults' psychological well-being, life satisfaction and their religiosity. Independent t-tests were also used to examine possible sex, ethnic and religiosity effects on psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Findings revealed that psychological well-being and life satisfaction are higher when religiosity is higher, regardless of sex or ethnicity. O Bem-estar Psicológico (BEP) é um construto que reflete o funcionamento positivo ou ótimo em nível psicológico. Suas seis dimensões, relações positivas com outros, autonomia, domínio do ambiente, crescimento pessoal, propósito na vida e auto aceitação, emergem da convergência de teorias do desenvolvimento humano, psicologia humanista-existencial e sobre a saúde mental. O objetivo desse estudo foi adaptar e investigar as evidências de validade da Escala de Bem-estar Psicológico (EBEP), e está dividido em três partes. Na primeira, é apresentado o conceito de BEP a partir de uma revisão seletiva da literatura, abordando questões sobre sua origem, o desenvolvimento do conceito, as diferentes abordagens na sua avaliação, e por fim, seus correlatos psicossociais, sociodemográficos e neurobiológicos. A segunda parte descreve o processo de adaptação da EBEP para o português brasileiro, a partir de uma abordagem que incluiu diferentes níveis de análise da adequação dos itens: tradução sintetizada, análise de juízes e avaliação da familiaridade. Por fim, a última parte descreve a validação da EBEP a partir de sua relação com indicadores prévios de bem-estar em nível psicológico, bem como a avaliação do desempenho psicométrico da mesma. Ao todo 346 sujeitos participaram do estudo ao longo de diferentes etapas. Os instrumentos utilizados foram a EBEP, a Escala de Satisfação de Vida, a Escala de Afeto Positivo e Negativo, o Inventário Beck de Depressão (BDI), e o Questionário de dados sociodemográficos. As análises dos dados incluíram estatísticas descritivas, análise multivariada de variância (MANOVA), correlações de Pearson, e medidas de consistência interna através do alpha de Cronbach. DEPRESSION AND FACTORS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG MALAY, CHINESE AND INDIAN ELDERLY WOMEN AT RUMAH SERI KENANGAN (RSK), PUBLIC WELFARE INSTITUTIONS IN MALAYSIA

For more than four decades, researchers have found depression to be a common mental illness among the elderly (Charatan, 1975; Sreevani & Reddemma, 2012). In Malaysia, the rates of depression among elderly residents of institutions are 67% higher than among elderly adults residing at home (Al-Jawad, Rashid, & Narayan, 2007). As in the United States, elderly Malaysian women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depressive symptoms as elderly men (Salimah et al., 2008). Time and again, research has revealed that depression is a significant problem for individuals later in life and may affect their psychological well-being. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship among depression and factors of psychological well-being among Malay, Chinese, and Indian elderly women living in four Rumah Seri Kenangans (RSKs), or public welfare institutions in Malaysia. Face-to-face interviews were conducted from August to October 2013 to measure participants' baseline depression, perceived social support, spiritual intelligence, self-esteem, and level of social desirability. A diverse group of 163 elderly women participated in this study, including 84 ethnic Malays (51.5%), 43 ethnic Chinese (26.4%), and 36 ethnic Indians (22.1%) with an average age of 70 (SD = 7.10). The results indicated that there were significant differences between the three ethnic groups in terms of their depression, spiritual intelligence, and perceived social support. Chinese elderly women were found to have higher baseline rates of depression, lower spiritual intelligence, and lower perceived social support than Malay as well as Indian elderly women. The results indicated that 37% of the combination of spiritual intelligence, perceived social support, self-esteem, and social desirability significantly predicted depression among elderly female participants (F(4,127)=22.77, p < .001). However, only perceived social support and self-esteem were found to be significant predictors of depression among the elderly women of the selected RSKs. These results led to some important implications for practitioners working with the elderly population in institutions, as well as for counselor educators. Limitations and recommendations for future research are also provided.

"YOU BITCH! YOU SLUT! YOU WHORE!": GENDER-SPECIFIC SYSTEM JUSTIFICATION AS A MEDIATOR OF WOMEN'S SELF-SEXUALIZATION AND BENEVOLENT SEXISM, ENVIRONMENTAL MASTERY, AND GENERAL POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE AFFECT

This study explored how system-justification theory may explain the mixed psychological outcomes of women's self-sexualization. Specifically, it was hypothesized that gender-specific system justification would mediate the relationships between women's intentions regarding and enjoyment of self-sexualization and (a) endorsement of benevolent sexist attitudes; (b) environmental mastery; (c) general positive affect; and (d) general negative affect. Participants were 190 heterosexual-identified women over the age of 18, surveyed through college courses, social media, and email advertisement. Measures included the Sexualizing Behavior Scale (SBS; Nowatzki & Morry, 2009), the Enjoyment of Sexualization Scale (ESS; Liss, Erchull, & Ramsey, 2011), a gender-specific system justification scale (as modified and used by Jost and Kay, 2005), the Benevolent Sexism subscale of the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (Glick & Fiske, 1996), the Environmental Mastery subscale from the Psychological Well-being Inventory (PWBI; Ryff, 1989), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule - Expanded Form (PANAS-X; Watson & Clark, 1999). Self-esteem was also examined as an exploratory criterion variable, using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory (RSE; Rosenberg, 1965). Data were analyzed through path analysis, and results indicated a number of significant direct paths between variables; however, none of the indirect paths was significant, indicating lack of support for the general hypothesis that gender-specific system justification would mediate the links between self-sexualizing and the criterion variables of interest. Implications of this study include illuminating the role of societal context in shaping the function of marginalized individuals' behaviors, as well as advancing feminist scholarship by bridging the opposing views regarding women's self-sexualizing behaviors.

Bem-estar de adolescentes e a sua relação com a espiritualidade e a religiosidade

Essa tese tem como objetivo investigar a relação da espiritualidade e da religiosidade com o bem-estar de adolescentes, considerando o bem-estar subjetivo e o psicológico. Para tanto, foram desenvolvidos seis estudos. O primeiro é uma Revisão Sistemática que buscou verificar a relação entre os conceitos de bem-estar e espiritualidade e religiosidade entre adolescentes, a partir de artigos empíricos publicados nos últimos 5 anos. Foram selecionados 26 artigos, que indicaram que há relação entre esses aspectos, e que essa é em geral positiva. Os estudos 2 a 4 apresentam avaliação psicométrica dos seguintes instrumentos: Escala de Bem-estar Psicológico, o Índice de Religiosidade de Duke e o módulo de Espiritualidade, religiosidade e Crenças pessoais (WHOQOL-SRPB). O estudo 5 investiga um modelo hipotético de bemestar entre adolescentes, composto por dimensões do bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico, e o estudo 6 busca investigar a relação da espiritualidade e da religiosidade com o bem-estar de adolescentes brasileiros. Nestes dois últimos estudos são analisadas ainda as possíveis diferenças nas medidas utilizadas por idade e sexo. A amostra dos estudos 2 a 6 foi composta por 1.248 adolescentes brasileiros de 12 a 18 anos (M = 15,09, DP = 1,77). A pesquisa foi realizada de forma online, através de um site criado especificamente para esse fim. Também participaram de grupos focais, realizados para o estudo 04, 58 adolescentes (M = 14,08, DP = 1,65). Para os estudos 5 e 6, além dos instrumentos já citados, foram utilizados uma escala de satisfação com a vida (BMLSS) e uma escala de afetos (CAS). Os resultados dos estudos 2 a 4 indicaram em geral bons índices de ajuste para análises fatoriais (exploratórias e confirmatórias), bem como a invariância dos instrumentos por sexo e idade. No estudo 5 foram testados modelos de relações entre o bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico através de SEM. A partir dos resultados optou-se por um modelo integrado, de fator único, explicando ambas as medidas. No estudo 6 os resultados indicaram relações positivas entre a espiritualidade e a religiosidade com o modelo integrado de bem-estar. Em relação às diferenças por médias, para bem-estar subjetivo foram encontradas diferenças significativas por sexo (meninas com médias maiores), para bem-estar psicológico diferenças por sexo e idade, sendo os resultados apresentados para cada subescala. Em relação à religiosidade e espiritualidade houve diferenças tanto por sexo como por idade. Em geral as meninas apresentaram médias maiores, e não foi encontrado um padrão nas diferenças por idade. Conclui-se que bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico dos adolescentes estão altamente correlacionados, podendo ser compreendidos em um modelo integrado de bem-estar, e que tanto a espiritualidade como a religiosidade possuem contribuições positivas sobre esse bem-estar. / This thesis aims to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the wellbeing of adolescents, considering both subjective and psychological well-being. Six studies were developed. The first one is a Systematic Review that sought to verify the relationship between well-being and spirituality and religiosity among adolescents, based on empirical articles published in the last 5 years. We selected 26 articles that indicate that there is a relationship between these aspects, and that this is generally positive. Studies 2 to 4 present a psychometric evaluation of the following instruments: Psychological Well-being Scale, Duke Religious Index, and the Spirituality, Religion and Personal Beliefs module (WHOQOLSRPB). Study 5 investigates a hypothetical model of well-being among adolescents, composed of dimensions of subjective and psychological well-being. Study 6 seeks to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the well-being of Brazilian adolescents. In the latter two studies, the possible differences in the measures used by age and sex are also analyzed. The sample of studies 2 to 6 was composed of 1,248 Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (M = 15.09, SD = 1.77). The research was conducted online, through a website created specifically for this purpose. For study 4, 58 adolescents (M = 14.08, SD = 1.65) also participated in focus groups. For studies 5 and 6, in addition to the instruments already cited, a life satisfaction scale (BMLSS) and an affects scale (CAS) were used. The results of studies 2 to 4 indicated, in general, good overall fit indices for factor analysis (exploratory and confirmatory), as well as the invariance of instruments by sex and age. In study 5 we tested models of relations between subjective and psychological well-being through SEM. From the results, we opted for an integrated, single-factor model, explaining both measures. In study 6 the results indicated positive relations between spirituality and religiosity with the integrated model of well-being. Regarding the differences by means, for subjective well-being were found significant differences by sex (girls with larger means), and for psychological well-being differences by sex and age, with the results presented for each subscale. Regarding religiosity and spirituality there were differences both by sex and by age. In general, girls presented higher averages, and a pattern of age differences was not found. The conclusion is that the subjective and psychological well-being of adolescents are highly correlated and can be understood in an integrated model of well-being, and that both spirituality and religiosity have positive contributions to this well-being.

Foram selecionados 26 artigos, que indicaram que há relação entre esses aspectos, e que essa é em geral positiva. Os estudos 2 a 4 apresentam avaliação psicométrica dos seguintes instrumentos: Escala de Bem-estar Psicológico, o Índice de Religiosidade de Duke e o módulo de Espiritualidade, religiosidade e Crenças pessoais (WHOQOL-SRPB). O estudo 5 investiga um modelo hipotético de bemestar entre adolescentes, composto por dimensões do bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico, e o estudo 6 busca investigar a relação da espiritualidade e da religiosidade com o bem-estar de adolescentes brasileiros. Nestes dois últimos estudos são analisadas ainda as possíveis diferenças nas medidas utilizadas por idade e sexo. A amostra dos estudos 2 a 6 foi composta por 1.248 adolescentes brasileiros de 12 a 18 anos (M = 15,09, DP = 1,77). A pesquisa foi realizada de forma online, através de um site criado especificamente para esse fim. Também participaram de grupos focais, realizados para o estudo 04, 58 adolescentes (M = 14,08, DP = 1,65). Para os estudos 5 e 6, além dos instrumentos já citados, foram utilizados uma escala de satisfação com a vida (BMLSS) e uma escala de afetos (CAS). Os resultados dos estudos 2 a 4 indicaram em geral bons índices de ajuste para análises fatoriais (exploratórias e confirmatórias), bem como a invariância dos instrumentos por sexo e idade. No estudo 5 foram testados modelos de relações entre o bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico através de SEM. A partir dos resultados optou-se por um modelo integrado, de fator único, explicando ambas as medidas. No estudo 6 os resultados indicaram relações positivas entre a espiritualidade e a religiosidade com o modelo integrado de bem-estar. Em relação às diferenças por médias, para bem-estar subjetivo foram encontradas diferenças significativas por sexo (meninas com médias maiores), para bem-estar psicológico diferenças por sexo e idade, sendo os resultados apresentados para cada subescala. Em relação à religiosidade e espiritualidade houve diferenças tanto por sexo como por idade. Em geral as meninas apresentaram médias maiores, e não foi encontrado um padrão nas diferenças por idade. Conclui-se que bem-estar subjetivo e psicológico dos adolescentes estão altamente correlacionados, podendo ser compreendidos em um modelo integrado de bem-estar, e que tanto a espiritualidade como a religiosidade possuem contribuições positivas sobre esse bem-estar. / This thesis aims to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the wellbeing of adolescents, considering both subjective and psychological well-being. Six studies were developed. The first one is a Systematic Review that sought to verify the relationship between well-being and spirituality and religiosity among adolescents, based on empirical articles published in the last 5 years. We selected 26 articles that indicate that there is a relationship between these aspects, and that this is generally positive. Studies 2 to 4 present a psychometric evaluation of the following instruments: Psychological Well-being Scale, Duke Religious Index, and the Spirituality, Religion and Personal Beliefs module (WHOQOLSRPB). Study 5 investigates a hypothetical model of well-being among adolescents, composed of dimensions of subjective and psychological well-being. Study 6 seeks to investigate the relationship of spirituality and religiosity with the well-being of Brazilian adolescents. In the latter two studies, the possible differences in the measures used by age and sex are also analyzed. The sample of studies 2 to 6 was composed of 1,248 Brazilian adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (M = 15.09, SD = 1.77). The research was conducted online, through a website created specifically for this purpose. For study 4, 58 adolescents (M = 14.08, SD = 1.65) also participated in focus groups. For studies 5 and 6, in addition to the instruments already cited, a life satisfaction scale (BMLSS) and an affects scale (CAS) were used. The results of studies 2 to 4 indicated, in general, good overall fit indices for factor analysis (exploratory and confirmatory), as well as the invariance of instruments by sex and age. In study 5 we tested models of relations between subjective and psychological well-being through SEM. From the results, we opted for an integrated, single-factor model, explaining both measures. In study 6 the results indicated positive relations between spirituality and religiosity with the integrated model of well-being. Regarding the differences by means, for subjective well-being were found significant differences by sex (girls with larger means), and for psychological well-being differences by sex and age, with the results presented for each subscale. Regarding religiosity and spirituality there were differences both by sex and by age. In general, girls presented higher averages, and a pattern of age differences was not found. The conclusion is that the subjective and psychological well-being of adolescents are highly correlated and can be understood in an integrated model of well-being, and that both spirituality and religiosity have positive contributions to this well-being.
