Art of Jesuit Chapels of the Deceased The theme of this work is presentation of Jesuit Chapel of the Deceased in Bohemia in the Baroque period. The main idea of these chapels are the last idea of man and reminder to purgatory. The presence of purgatory was unquestionable for Baroque society and very often presentation in art. Purgatory was place, which gives hope to the Catholics for salvation and it was great occasional for using special symbols and emblems, it is a way how the remind a believer to the idea of the Last Judgment.

Consumed yet quickened by the glance of God : John Henry Newman's Theology of Purgatory

This thesis outlines the development of the doctrine of Purgatory in the theology of the nineteenth century theologian John Henry Newman (1801-1890). I trace the beginning of this development from 1816-1828 by identifying key theological themes from Newman’s early Evangelical writings on holiness, purification and conversion. After rejecting the Evangelicalism of his youth, Newman moved progressively towards High-Church Anglicanism from 1828 onward, and adopted the Anglican teaching of the 'intermediate state'. From 1830 he began to preach on this teaching by presenting it as an alternative to the 'depressing prospect' to the 'Romish' doctrine of Purgatory. However from 1837-1845 his views on Purgatory shifted considerably after studying the Tridentine decrees. In 1841 he claimed in Tract XC of Tracts for the Times that significant changes in the formulation of Article XXII of the XXXIX Articles meant that the Church of England did not reject the doctrine of Purgatory in its primitive form, but rather only the 'Romish' extremes of mediaeval theology which had corrupted her teaching. His claim that there was no disparity between what Trent taught on Purgatory and what the Church of England held in Article XXII caused widespread controversy among his contemporaries. In his early Roman Catholic years, from 1845-1853, he initially adopted the commonly held punitive model of Purgatory, but leaned increasingly towards an ameliorative understanding of the doctrine. By 1865 Newman had adumbrated a theology of Purgatory in The Dream of Gerontius, in which he showed how rather than being purged by material fire, the soul was purified by a singular and instantaneous experience of the holiness of God. I demonstrate how his theology of Purgatory in the Dream represents a significant contribution to a renewed understanding of the doctrine in Roman Catholic theology.

Le but de la présente thèse est d’étudier les témoignages sur la doctrine de l’« Hadès ouranien » du IVe siècle avant J.-C. au VIe siècle après J.-C. et de dégager les éléments essentiels. L’« Hadès ouranien », traduction de l’expression ὁ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ᾍδης, est un thème de pensée qui caractérise tout un millénaire de la philosophie et de la religion de l’Antiquité païenne. En traitant ce thème historico-religieux, on se veut le plus complet possible mais tout en étant prudent envers nos sources, qui sont fragmentaires et qui proviennent, pour la majorité, de la tradition platonico-péripatéticienne et de ses commentateurs. Aussi, s’efforce-t-on de montrer que l’Hadès ouranien est un lieu de purification pour l’âme et donc, un purgatoire. D’une manière générale, notre recherche est la première entièrement consacrée au sujet de l’Hadès ouranien et à son évolution durant l’Antiquité. Pour ce faire, sur la base d’une approche contextualisée, nous croyons devoir distinguer en réalité trois lieux où l’Hadès céleste a été situé : il y a d’un côté l’emplacement dans la Voie Lactée (Héraclide du Pont) ; il y a aussi un effort, assez divers en ses formes, de situer ce Purgatoire entre la Lune et la terre ou aux alentours de la Lune (les académiciens, les stoïciens, Cicéron, Virgile, Plutarque, les écrits hermétiques) ; finalement, Numénius et les néoplatoniciens latins l’ont situé entre la sphère des fixes et la terre. Quant à l’évolution des éléments qui constituent notre thème, la thèse montre que le platonisme et le néoplatonisme ont fourni un milieu propice pour le développement et la propagation dans l’empire gréco-romain des doctrines sur l’Hadès céleste. De plus, ces mouvements ont aidé à la spiritualisation progressive de cet espace purgatoire. Par ailleurs, on établira certaines caractéristiques de notre thème : l’échappée de l’âme hors du corps, l’allégorie physique et la division, ontologique et physique, entre les mondes sublunaire et supralunaire. Dans une première partie, on traitera de la doctrine de l’Hadès ouranien dans l’ancienne Académie platonicienne (Héraclide, Xénocrate, Philippe d’Oponte) et dans le stoïcisme. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l’analyse du Purgatoire chez Plutarque de Chéronée. La doctrine du Purgatoire selon Cicéron et Virgile et chez leurs interprètes néoplatoniciens, ainsi que dans l’hermétisme et le gnosticisme sera traitée dans la troisième partie. Dans la quatrième et dernière partie, on explorera la doctrine du Purgatoire dans le Oracles chaldaïques et dans les écrits de Proclus, particulièrement dans son Commentaire sur la République de Platon. / The aim of the present dissertation is to study the testimonies concerning the doctrine of the “Celestial Hades” from the 4th century BCE to the 6th century CE and to uncover its essential elements. The “Celestial Hades”, translation of the Greek expression ὁ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ᾍδης, is a pattern of thought that characterizes a millenary of the philosophy and the religion of Pagan Antiquity. In analysing this historico-religious motif, we try to be as exhaustive as possible, though we are very prudent towards our sources, which are in most cases fragmentary and originate from the Platonico-Aristotelian tradition. Hence, an effort has been made to show that the celestial Hades is a place of purification for the soul and thus a Purgatory. Generally speaking, our investigation is the first to be entirely dedicated to the study of the doctrine of the Celestial Hades and to its development during Antiquity. To achieve this aim, and following a contextualist approach, we have tried to distinguish three places where the Celestial Hades has been situated: it has been situated either in the Milky Way (Heraclides of Pontus); or between the Moon and the Earth or around the Moon (the Academicians, the Stoics, Cicero, Virgil, Plutarch, the Hermetical writings); finally, it has been situated, according to Numenius and the Latin Neoplatonists, between the sphere of the fixed stars and the Earth. As regarding its development, our study shows that the Platonist and Neoplatonist traditions have provided a favourable milieu for the propagation of this doctrine in Antiquity. Moreover, certain characteristics regarding our theme will be established: the ascension of the soul, the doctrine of physical allegory and the division, ontological et physical, between the sublunary and the supralunary worlds. In the first part of our research, we analyse the doctrine of the Celestial Hades on the Early Academy of Plato (Heraclides, Xenocrates, Philip of Opus) and in the Stoic school. The second part is dedicated to Plutarch’s doctrine of Purgatory. Thirdly, the same doctrine will be analysed in Cicero and Virgil, and their exegetes, as well as in the Hermetic treatises and Gnosticism. The fourth and last part will explore the celestial Purgatory in the Chaldaean Oracles and in the writings of Proclus, particularly his Commentary on the Republic.

We consider the precepts laid down in Council of Trent and their influence in the process of Portuguese colonization, and remember that this period is marked by the ideas of the Renaissance and Enlightenment movements. By monitoring the administrative and pastoral concerns of the bishops, both in Portugal and in the colony, we realize that the ecclesiastical patronage system represented an obstacle to the action of themselves at dioceses. The character of animosity in relations between Church authorities and representatives of the Crown in the captaincy, especially in the middle of the eighteenth century show that the submission of religious power in the face of ecclesiastical patronage system was not full. Consideramos as normas religiosas estabelecidas no Concílio de Trento e suas influências no processo da colonização portuguesa, além de ter presente que esse período é marcado pelas idéias dos movimentos renascentistas e iluministas. Ao acompanhar as preocupações pastorais e administrativas dos bispos, tanto em Portugal quanto na colônia, percebemos que o Padroado representou um obstáculo para a ação dos mesmos nas dioceses. Towards A Poetics of Marvellous Spaces in Old and Middle English Narratives

From the eighth to the fourteenth century, places of wonder and dread appear in a wide variety of genres in Old and Middle English: epics, lays, romances, saints’ lives, travel narratives, marvel collections, visions of the afterlife. These places appear in narratives of the other world, a term which in Old and Middle English texts refers to the Christian afterlife: Hell, Purgatory, even Paradise can be fraught with wonder, danger, and the possibility of harm. But in addition to the other world, there are places that are not theologically separate from the human world, but that are nevertheless both marvellous and horrifying: the monster-mere in Beowulf, the Faerie kingdom of Sir Orfeo, the demon-ridden Vale Perilous in Mandeville’s Travels, or the fearful landscape of the Green Chapel in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Fraught with horror or the possibility of harm, these places are profoundly different from the presented or implied home world of the text. My dissertation investigates how Old and Middle English narratives create places of wonder and dread; how they situate these places metaphysically between the world of living mortals and the world of the afterlife; how they furnish these places with dangerous topography and monstrous inhabitants, as well as with motifs, with tropes, and with thematic concerns that signal their marvellous and fearful nature. I argue that the heart of this poetics of marvellous spaces is displacement. Their wonder and dread comes from boundaries that these places blur and cross, from the resistance of these places to being known or mapped, and from the deliberate distancing between these places and the home of their texts. This overarching concern with displacement encourages the migration of iconographic motifs, tropes, and themes across genre boundaries and theological categories.

Au nom de la terre : pour une tropologie lumineuse de l’espace eschatologique dans la Commedia / In the name of the earth : a tropology of light in the eschatological space of the Commedia

Ce travail interprète les deux premières parties de la Divine Comédie de Dante Alighieri (1261-1321) à partir des valeurs symboliques associées par son auteur à la lumière. L’objectif est de démontrer que, grâce à la représentation de multiples phénomènes lumineux dans l’Enfer et dans le Purgatoire, le redressement moral conçu pour le lecteur est comparable à une véritable conversion, un cheminement de l’esprit qui fuit l’erreur (ténèbres) pour se rapprocher par étapes successives du salut (lumière).Dans la première partie, la nécessité pour l’auteur de placer ces deux espaces eschatologiques chrétiens sur terre est mise en relation avec les vicissitudes rencontrées par Dante qui le conduisent à s’interroger sur le destin d’une humanité en perdition. L’égarement de l’âme ayant perdu le bien de l’intellect, de même que son rachat, sont évoqués dans le monde des vivants par la présence du royaume de la damnation éternelle, l’abîme infernal, et d’un espace de pénitence temporaire, une montagne élevée. En traversant ces deux lieux de l’au-delà, le protagoniste échappe à la forêt obscure et s’apprête à atteindre le colle illuminé ; il suggère ainsi au lecteur un modèle de conduite morale à travers l’interprétation symbolique des phénomènes lumineux.Dans la deuxième et dans la troisième partie, l’exemplarité attribuée à la représentation de la lumière se précise à travers l’expérience exceptionnelle du pèlerin, viator dans le monde des morts : dans l’Enfer, la « poétique du feu » met en scène l’évolution d’une conscience en train de constater les conséquences désastreuses d’un usage malsain de l’intellect (ingegno) ; dans le Purgatoire, la « poésie du ciel » relate la libération progressive d’un esprit à qui sont annoncés les signes de son élection au privilège de la grâce. / This work is an interpretation of the first two parts of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (1261-1321) from the symbolic meanings associated to light by the author. The objective is to demonstrate that through the representation of multiple light phenomena in Hell and in Purgatory , moral recovery designed for the reader is similar to a true conversion, a journey of the mind fleeing its error (darkness) in order to approach salvation (light) by stages.In the first part, the necessity to place part of the Christian eschatological space on earth is related to Dante’s vicissitudes that make him question the destiny of a humanity in distress. The error of the soul which has lost the good of the intellect, as well as its redemption, are evoked in the world of the living by the presence of the realm of eternal damnation (the infernal abyss) and a space for temporary penance (a high mountain). By crossing those two places of the afterlife, the protagonist escapes the dark forest and prepares to reach the illuminated colle. Thus he suggests a model of moral behavior through a symbolic interpretation of the luminous phenomena.In the second and third parts, the exemplarity attributed to the representation of light is made clear through the exceptional experience of the pilgrim, viator in the world of the dead : in Hell, the "poetics of fire " stages the evolution of consciousness : an awareness of the disastrous consequences of an unhealthy use of the intellect (ingegno) ; in Purgatory , the "poetry of heaven " traces the gradual release of a mind to which the signs of its election to the privilege of grace are revealed.
