Our objective was to study the symbolic systems developed in several societies, by starting from tribal cultures, then moving to Early Christianity from the period just before and after the institutionalisation process that gave birth to Catholic Christianity. We analysed both, the Catholic practices and representations related to death and dying, in the Middle Ages, as well as in the Modern and Contemporary times both in Europe and Brazil. We also aimed to depict death rites as a way to give meaning to life, and of keeping and reinforcing social cohesion found whenever death takes a member of a given society, thus provoking disruption and social unbalance. By doing this research on Catholic death rites we had as a goal to develop a little more the knowledge about a social and religious phenomenon that is seldom approached by researchers, the death of the believer, and Catholic groups death practices, their customs and speeches about the dead. Nevertheless, we cared to do all of these in the Brazilian scenery, a setting that grows more and more urban and secular.(AU) / Esta pesquisa procurou descrever, analisar e comparar as cerimônias mortuárias e as representações coletivas de católicos brasileiros da morte e do luto. Tivemos por objetivo estudar os sistemas simbólicos desenvolvidos em várias sociedades, começando com as culturas tribais, passando depois para o cristianismo dos primeiros séculos, antes da instauração do processo de institucionalização que originou o cristianismo católico e durante ele. Analisamos as práticas e representações católicas relacionadas com a morte e o morrer, na Idade Média, Idade Moderna e Contemporânea, tanto na Europa como no Brasil. O objetivo também foi apresentar os ritos mortuários como formas de dar sentido à vida, de reforçar e manter a coesão social, em que indivíduos vivem constantemente os desarranjos gerados pela presença da morte que arrebata um dos seus semelhantes provocando um desequilíbrio social. Ao realizar tal pesquisa sobre os rituais mortuários católicos, a meta consistiu em avançar um pouco mais no conhecimento sobre um fenômeno social religioso nem sempre abordado pelos pesquisadores: a morte do crente, as práticas mortuárias dos grupos católicos, seus hábitos e discurso quanto ao morto, dentro de um cenário brasileiro que se torna cada vez mais urbano e secularizado.(AU)

The Flamekeeper : The Confessional Purgation of the Soul in the Poetry of Robert Lowell

This essay is a critical textual analysis of the poetry of Robert Lowell with focus on religious symbolism used in his work, and the Catholic theology which informed it. This results in a new, contrasting interpretation to the conventional view that he had abandoned his religious focus by mid-career, while accounting for his own assessment that he had not. Insights gained through this analysis, combined with those relating to Lowell’s personal history, reframe his confessional poetry while bolstering this claim.  Through this study, poems selected from Lord Weary’s Castle, The Mills of the Kavanaughs, Life Studies and For the Union Dead are reinterpreted in order to explore the consequences of what Lowell could have intended with this stylistic modification, and discover the religiosity that he claimed was hidden. Lowell’s confessional poetry up until 1964 is examined and recast as the anguished wails of a Catholic soul in Purgatory. This fresh approach to one of America’s finest twentieth-century poets provides a novel foundation for the reinterpretation of the entirety of Lowell’s professional oeuvre.

Resolving the Password Security Purgatory in the Contexts of Technology, Security and Human Factors

Yes / Passwords are the most popular and constitute the first line of defence in computer-based security systems; despite the existence of more attack-resistant authentication schemes. In order to enhance password security, it is imperative to strike a balance between having enough rules to maintain good security and not having too many rules that would compel users to take evasive actions which would, in turn, compromise security. It is noted that the human factor is the most critical element in the security system for at least three possible reasons; it is the weakest link, the only factor that exercises initiatives, as well as the factor that transcends all the other elements of the entire system. This illustrates the significance of social engineering in security designs, and the fact that security is indeed a function of both technology and human factors; bearing in mind the fact that there can be no technical hacking in vacuum. This paper examines the current divergence among security engineers as regards the rules governing best practices in the use of passwords: should they be written down or memorized; changed frequently or remain permanent? It also attempts to elucidate the facts surrounding some of the myths associated with computer security. This paper posits that destitution of requisite balance between the factors of technology and factors of humanity is responsible for the purgatory posture of password security related problems. It is thus recommended that, in the handling of password security issues, human factors should be given priority over technological factors. The paper proposes the use of the (k, n)-Threshold Scheme, such as the Shamir’s secret-sharing scheme, to enhance the security of the password repository. Geographies of the underworld: the poetics of chthonic embodiment and game worlds

A concept of underworld runs through many cultures. These realms of spirits and the dead generally share several key characteristics, despite their varied and separate traditions. The commonalities among these different mythological places make it possible to generalize certain characteristics as chthonic for descriptive and analytical purposes. The underworld has appeared widely in video games throughout their history. I argue that the remarkable prevalence reflects a formal relationship between the underworld and video games; specific elements in mythic underworlds comprise a chthonic poetics that resonates with video game worlds and affordances. Video games uniquely support the spatial, thematic, and narrative elements that characterize underworlds and the philosophical questions they engage. Embodiment binds these elements together; they are unintelligible without this core perspective. The body sits at the axis of experience in mythic underworlds like the one described by Dante in the Divine Comedy and in game worlds like the one in World of Warcraft. It provides the medium through which we can experience these simulations as worlds rather than mere information structures. Other formal elements give context and direction to that embodied experience, and exploring how these interact with embodiment can expand our understanding of chthonic embodiment and the experience of space in virtual worlds. Three primary forces acting on the agency, subjectivity and control of the body structure that experience, which in turn reflects the ways of being that emerge from chthonic contexts. By incorporating these forces into their gameplay and narrative structure, games provide more direct access to the mythic power associated with the underworld than previous media forms.

Seeing and Sinners : Spatial Stratification and the Medieval Hagioscopes of Gotland / Syn och syndare : Spatial stratifiering och de medeltida hagioskopen på Gotland

The hagioscope—a small tunnel or opening usually set at eye-level in a church wall—is a complex and multifaceted device that appears in Europe during the late medieval period. Despite an increased interest in the  history of the senses, the hagioscope has been overlooked until now. Drawing from Hans Georg Gadamer’s ideas  about hermeneutics, Jacques Le Goff’s work on Purgatory, and the medieval intellectual Peter of Limoges’ thoughts on vision, this study aims to shed light on why the hagioscope appeared when it did and how it may  have been used.   This case study of the hagioscope concerns the known hagioscopes with connected cells on the island of Gotland.  It is introduced with two themes that combined, create a conceptual understanding of the hagioscope: the first is the device as a physical boundary or spatial division in a church room resulting from changes in theology and liturgy and the second is the device in the context of a medieval discourse on visuality, derived from the widespread thirteenth century treatise, De oculi morali. With this understanding in mind, the last chapter presents and discusses previous theories on the Gotland hagioscopes. In contrast with previous research, this thesis proves that the cells of Gotland are clearly of two different kinds: earlier cells are small, lack windows and have trefoil-shaped hagioscopes and a deep niche that significantly distances the observer from the nave. Later cells are bigger, equipped with a single window, have a niche spatially closer to the nave, and have differently shaped hagioscopes.

L'eschatologie chrétienne en Afrique à l'ombre de la théologie du Christ-Ancêtre / Christian eschatology in Africa in the shadow of Christ-Ancestor

Le contexte culturel du continent africain est marqué par la prégnance des ancêtres. C’est pourquoi la théologie de l’inculturation de la foi a pensé devoir s’approprier la thématique de l’ancêtre afin de rapatrier sa signification symbolique au service de la foi chrétienne. Mais, par-delà une mise en rapport informelle entre le Christ et l’ancêtre, l’inculturation de la foi a évolué vers la formalité spéculative d’une ancestralisation du Christ. En cela, la théologie du Christ-Ancêtre nous place devant un procédé périlleux de subsomption logique qui introduit et risque d’absorber le Novum du Christ dans les catégories et genres antérieurs de la culture de réception. L’ancestralisme n’est pas une réalité simplement africaine ; il traverse la Bible et d’autres cultures comme celle de la Rome antique et de la Chine ancienne. Par-delà la causalité exemplaire de l’ancêtre que la mémoire du passé suffit à fonder métaphysiquement, la théologie chrétienne ne peut pas lui reconnaître une causalité efficiente. En juste foi chrétienne, c’est l’efficience du Ressuscité qui bouleverse tout le régime d’efficience salvifique antérieur à la nouveauté chrétienne. Le Christ n’est pas un Ancêtre, il est l’Eschaton. / The cultural context of the african continent is marked by the pregnancy of the ancestors.That is why the theology of the inculturation of the faith thought of having to appropriate the theme of the ancestor to repatriate its symbolic meaning in the service of the christian faith. But beyond an informal putting in report between the Christ and the ancestor, the inculturation of the faith evolved towards the speculative formality of an ancestralisation of the Christ. In that respect, the theology of Christ-Ancestor places us in front of a precarious process of logical subsumption which introduces and risks to absorb the Novum of Christ in the categories and the previous kinds of the culture of reception. The ancestralism is not only african reality; it crosses the Bible and the other cultures as that of ancient Rome and ancient China. Beyond the exemplary causality of the ancestor which the memory of past is enough to establish metaphysically, the christian theology cannot recognize it an efficient causality. In christian faith, it is the efficiency of the Resuscitated that upsets all the category of salvific efficiency previous to the Christian novelty. Christ is not an Ancestor, he is Eschaton.

This diploma thesis attends to personnel "purge" in the field of public administration in Czechoslovakia after World War II in a broader context. "The purge" of civil servants is presented in the context of the overall development of the Czechoslovak Republic in the period 1945 -1948 and with the general requests of the postwar "purge". The attention is paid to the status of civil servants, particularly in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and in the postwar period. The next part of this thesis is focused on the activity of the purgatory commissions, which operated on the basis of the Decree of the President. In the selected ministries is performed the analysis and the comparison of the model cases of "purge" of the civil servants.

Playing dead : living death in early modern drama

This thesis looks at occurrences of "living death" – a liminal state that exists between life and death, and which may be approached from either side – in early modern English drama. Today, reference to the living dead brings to mind zombies and their ilk, creatures which entered the English language and imagination centuries after the time of the great early modern playwrights. Yet, I argue, many post-Reformation writers were imagining states between life and death in ways more complex than existing critical discussions of “ghosts” have tended to perceive. My approach to the subject is broadly historicist, but informed throughout by ideas of stagecraft and performance. In addition to presenting fresh interpretations of well-known plays such as Thomas Middleton’s The Maiden’s Tragedy (1611) and John Webster’s The White Devil (1612), I also endeavour to shed new light on various non-canon works such as the anonymous The Tragedy of Locrine (c.1591), John Marston's Antonio's Revenge (c.1602), and Anthony Munday's mayoral pageants Chruso-thriambos (1611) and Chrysanaleia (1616), works which have received little in the way of serious scholarly attention or, in the case of Antonio's Revenge, been much maligned by critics. These dramatic works depict a whole host of the living dead, including not only ghosts and spirits but also resurrected Lord Mayors, corpses which continue to “perform” after death, and characters who anticipate their deaths or define themselves through last dying speeches. By exploring the significance of these characters, I demonstrate that the concept of living death is vital to our understanding of deeper thematic and symbolic meanings in a wide range of dramatic works.

Liszt och Djävulen : En analys av "Dantesonaten"

I detta arbete analyseras det omfattande pianoverket ”Dantesonaten” komponerat av Franz Liszt i syfte om att ta reda på vilka musikaliska och tekniska element han utnyttjat för att uttrycka djävulen, helvetet och andra diaboliska företeelser i sin musik. Därmed kommer en djupgående analys av eposet Den gudomliga komedin skrivet av Dante Alighieri genomförasdå Liszt baserat sin komposition på detta verk. Liszts intresse för Den gudomliga komedin och Dante som poet belyses samt varför han valt att basera sin sonat på detta ämne. Resultatet tyder på att Liszt använt dissonanta intervall som tritonus, dimackord, heltonsskalor, kromatik och tremoloteknik m.m. för att allt i kombination bilda en tydlig representation av det som kan kopplas med det diaboliska. Största delen av resultatet består av egna tolkningar men även andras interpretationer hämtade från olika litterära källor och online-resurser. Det var svårt att finna konkreta tecken på vad kompositörens egna återspeglingar i musiken må ha varit. Däremot kan detta arbete ändå vara en bra utgångspunkt för en pianist som planerar att spela verket och vill få idéer om hur det diaboliska materialet och andra teman ur ”Dantesonaten” kan tolkas. / In this study, the extensive piano piece "The Dante Sonata" composed by Franz Liszt is analyzed in order to find out what musical and technical elements he has used to express the devil, hell and other diabolical phenomena in his music. Thus, an in-depth analysis of the narrative poem The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri will be made, as Liszt bases his composition on this work. The study investigates Liszt's interest in The Divine Comedyand Dante as a poet and why he chose to base his sonata on this subject. The results indicate that Liszt used dissonant intervals such as tritones, diminished chords, whole-tone scales, chromatic passages and tremolo technique, etc. to all in combination form a clear representation of the diabolical. Most of the results consist of own interpretations but also other renderings taken from various literary sources and online-resources. It was difficult to find concrete signs of what the composer's own reflections in the music may have been. However, this work can still be a good starting point for a pianist who plans to study thismusic and want to get ideas on how the diabolical material and other themes from "The Dante Sonata" can be interpreted. / <p>F. María de Jesús (1690s-1776) was a white-veiled Discalced Carmelite nun of the San José convent in Santa Fe de Bogotá, founded in 1606. She professed in the year 1714, and her spiritual journal was printed in a chronicle about the convent in the 1940s. The aim of this study is to examine the love of God and of neighbour, as expressed in the spiritual journal of María de Jesús. In this study I will proceed from the understanding of love as charity. In Christian thought God Himself is love, and its source. Charity, the third, and greatest, of the theological virtues, is a state of being in and responding to God’s love and favour. This way of loving consists in loving God wholeheartedly and loving our neighbour as ourselves. Included in loving our neighbour are acts related to his or her spiritual benefit and salvation. These are all present themes in María de Jesús’ text, but my aim is to examine how she incorporates these themes in her spiritual testimony by analyzing the imagery she uses, and the affective language in her spiritual journal. I will also seek to understand her way of writing by analyzing her text against the background of the tradition of women’s spiritual writings. Being a Discalced Carmelite, it will also be interesting to discover the Teresian presence in María de Jesus’ text, i.e. the influence of her predecessor and the reformer of the order, Teresa of Ávila (1515- 1582). I suggest that this can be noticed in certain rhetorical techniques. I also aim to examine if there are any similarities and differences in their expressions of love of God and of neighbour.
