Yes / Imagine that you’re entering a cave on a sunny, warm summer day. There is a swift, and distinct, change in the temperature as you walk into the darkness – a cold, dampness that cuts through to the bone. The lack of internal light immediately plunges you into darkness as you journey further into the cave, and the inherent stillness and silence means any noise you make is amplified twofold. If the Underworld exists, this is likely where it would be situated. And yet, if you simply turn around to face the entrance of the cave, you are greeted by a completely different setting; you can see the bright sun, the clear blue skies. By walking back to the start, you can already feel the warm air, hear the natural noises that one associates with the outdoors. But stop right in the middle, between the entrance of the cave and its deeper chambers – here, you’re in between what can only be described as two completely different worlds. This is a liminal space – and its where I exist, as a researcher and as a queer, mixed woman.

Crying for Change: Examining the Use of Period Melodrama and the Melodramatic Mode in Contemporary Queer RepresentationBonthuys, Justin 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis illustrates how Melodrama and the melodramatic mode have been adapted within contemporary cinema as both a means of commenting on prior LGBTQI representation, and of exposing mainstream audiences to the issues still faced by many within this spectrum. Through my analyses of Carol (2015), Brokeback Mountain (2005), and A Single Man (2009), I examine how filmmakers have drawn on Melodrama as both an aesthetic form, and as a reference to the broader field of generic history and criticism which ground it as a subversive form of societal critique. By focusing specifically on how these three films portray ideological issues of gender, stereotyping, parenthood, aging, and personal shame, my thesis argues that these films are making a commentary on the damaging effects of these discourses on broader society. I also simultaneously question whether the Period Melodrama as a genre can ever fully escape the conservative nature of this form, as well as the implications of continuing to portray those on the LGBTQI spectrum as victims.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power : Exploring Character Development and Queer RepresentationConrad, Emelie, Malmsten, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
In this thesis the animated tv series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and the representation and the character development within it is researched and analyzed. In television and media, representation has a history of being narrow. But in 2018 the animated tv series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power came and showed how broad representation could be done, and how it can be done by creating characters who are allowed to develop. Our aim with the study was to study the character development and the representation, with a focus on queer identities and themes. With the series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power as a case, and through visual analysis and character analysis we approached our study and this subject. Our study resulted with the conclusion that queer representation does not have to be direct or in your face. With focus on the characters own developments, and letting them exist in a non-heteronormative world, they got to emerge as their own persons with complex identities which are not relying on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The show instead shows that it's possible to provide broad representation where everyone can exist in a world that does not abide by the norms that are found in real society. It also became clear that the series real aim was on the importance of friendship, love and acceptance, rather than the storyline which was a mere entertaining excuse for this deeper meaning.

Black Sails, Rainbow Flag: Examining Queer Representations in Film and TelevisionRazman, Diana Cristina January 2020 (has links)
This thesis aims to present, discuss, and analyze issues relating to queer representations in film and television. The thesis focuses on existing tropes, such as queer coding, queerbaiting, and the “Bury Your Gays” trope that are prevalent in contemporary media, and applies the analysis of these tropes to a case study based on the television series Black Sails (2014-2017). The analysis explores the main research question: in what way does Black Sails subvert or reproduce existing queer tropes in film and television? This then leads to the discussion of three aspects: the way queer sexual identities are represented overall, what representational strategies are employed by the series in a number of episodes, and whether or not these representations reproduce or subvert media tropes.

This thesis aim was to find the answer the following research question: What do queer gamers think of the game Monster Prom. The material gathered for this thesis was through a participant observation with four people from the LGBTQIA+ community playing the game Monster Prom and a subsequent focus group interview with these people. The material was analysed using Queer Game Studies research. In this paper I came to the conclusion that representation does matter to queer gamers. According to my interviewees, there is a need for representation in games and that it needs to be diverse and made undramatic. The interviewees brought forward how and why this design of an avatar system gives the player freedom, queer possibilities, and being positively received by queer players. The interviewees also brought forward how and when one should/shouldn't write a story surrounding the representation of queer oppression from a queer player´s point of view.

Not So Elementary: An Examination of Trends in a Century of Sherlock Holmes AdaptationsCamp, Nathan 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines changes over time in 40 different Sherlock Holmes films and 39 television series and movies spanning from 1900 to 2017. Quantitative observations were mixed with a qualitative examination. Perceptions of law enforcement became more positive over time, the types of crime did not vary, and representation of race and gender improved over time with incrementally positive changes in the representation of queer, mentally ill, and physically handicapped individuals. The exact nature of these trends is discussed. Additionally, the trends of different decades are explored and compared. Sherlock Holmes is mostly used as a vehicle for storytelling rather than for the salacious crimes that he solves, making the identification of perceptions of crime in different decades difficult. The reasons for why different Sherlock Holmes projects were created in different eras and for different purposes are discussed.

This thesis provides an overview of the various ways in which select marginalized identities are represented within the twenty-first century American musical film. The first intention of this thesis is to identify, define, and organize the different subgenres that appear within the twenty-first century iterations of the musical film. The second, and principal, intention of this thesis is to explore contemporary representations of African-Americans, women, and queerness throughout the defined subgenres. Within this thesis, key films are analyzed from within each subgenre to understand these textual representations.
