Extent and limitations of functional redundancy among bacterial communities towards dissolved organic matter

One of the key processes in the carbon cycle on our planet is the degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments. The use of organic matter by bacteria links energy from DOM to higher trophic levels of the ecosystem when bacteria are consumed by other organisms. This is referred to as the microbial loop. In this thesis I examined if the communities were functionally redundant in their ability to utilize organic matter, or if variation in bacterial composition and richness is of importance. To test this overarching question several experiments were conducted that include methods such as illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene for taxonomic identification of bacterial communities, flow cytometry to follow the growth of communities and spectroscopic measurement to describe the composition of the organic matter pool. Initially we demonstrated how to optimally sterilize organic matter for experimental studies in order to preserve its natural complexity. In further experiments we found that bacterial communities are redundant in their utilization of organic matter and can maintain optimal performance towards a range of organic matter pools. Related to this we found that pre-adaptation to organic matter played a small role as communities performed equally well regardless of their environmental history. We saw a small effect of richness and composition of bacterial communities on the efficiency of organic matter use, but conclude that this is of minor importance relative to abiotic factors. Still, we also show that organic matter can put strong selection pressure on bacterial communities with regards to richness and composition. Additionally we found that the supply rate of a carbon compound greatly influenced the energy utilization of the compound, i.e. a higher growth rate can be maintained if substrate is delivered in pulses relative to a continuous flow. Finally we conclude that the variation in bacterial communities is unlikely to have a major influence on carbon cycling in boreal lakes, but to enable a finer understanding, the genetics underlying the carbon utilization needs to be further explored.

Postprocesamiento CAM-ROBOTICA orientado al prototipado y mecanizado en células robotizadas complejas

The main interest of this thesis consists of the study and implementation of postprocessors to adapt the toolpath generated by a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) system to a complex robotic workcell of eight joints, devoted to the rapid prototyping of 3D CAD-defined products. It consists of a 6R industrial manipulator mounted on a linear track and synchronized with a rotary table. To accomplish this main objective, previous work is required. Each task carried out entails a methodology, objective and partial results that complement each other, namely: - It is described the architecture of the workcell in depth, at both displacement and joint-rate levels, for both direct and inverse resolutions. The conditioning of the Jacobian matrix is described as kinetostatic performance index to evaluate the vicinity to singular postures. These ones are analysed from a geometric point of view. - Prior to any machining, the additional external joints require a calibration done in situ, usually in an industrial environment. A novel Non-contact Planar Constraint Calibration method is developed to estimate the external joints configuration parameters by means of a laser displacement sensor. - A first control is originally done by means of a fuzzy inference engine at the displacement level, which is integrated within the postprocessor of the CAM software. - Several Redundancy Resolution Schemes (RRS) at the joint-rate level are compared for the configuration of the postprocessor, dealing not only with the additional joints (intrinsic redundancy) but also with the redundancy due to the symmetry on the milling tool (functional redundancy). - The use of these schemes is optimized by adjusting two performance criterion vectors related to both singularity avoidance and maintenance of a preferred reference posture, as secondary tasks to be done during the path tracking. A-Z Database Discovery using Alma: Eliminate Redundancy and Simplify your Workflow

Frustrated by having to maintain an A-Z databases list separately on our library website and in Alma/Primo, East Tennessee State University embarked on a goal to eliminate redundancy by using Alma as our primary source of metadata for eResources. This presentation will cover our entire workflow and the issues we encountered along the way. I'll first go over our process in Alma including MARC record creation, electronic collection setup, and the top level collection module. Next, I'll cover our workflow in Primo including normalization rules, scoping, and PNX display. The last section will cover the Alma API's and how they were used to sync our LibGuides A-Z list.

Functional diversity of herbivorous fishes in coral reefs in central Red Sea

In this research, I explore the changes in the functional diversity of herbivorous fishes in zones of coral reefs with different benthic composition: a zone dominated by corals, a zone dominated by algae and a transition zone in between the previous two. I choose to use functional traits which explain the feeding mechanics of this group of fish, as well their feeding rates and their previously established functional groups to understand how different assemblages of this fishes could affect their environment in different ways. I found clear differences in the functional diversity by calculating five indexes, functional dispersion (FDis), functional richness (FRic), functional divergence (FDiv), functional evenness (FEve) and functional specialization (FSpe). Each zone showed different species composition with different abundances; both parameters contribute to obtaining different values of the indexes. The coral-dominated zone showed the biggest multidimensional functional trait space (MFTS) with a value of FRic equals to 1 which means that its assemblage occupies 100% of the MFTS, while the transition zone assemblage occupied 83% and the algae-dominated zone occupied 16% of it. Thanks to this index I identified three functionally redundant species in the coral-dominated and the transition zones. The algae-dominated zone showed the lower FDis explained by the high abundance of grazers individuals. FDiv did not vary significantly between the three zones. FEve was higher in the algae-dominated zone; the index value decreased in the transition and coral-dominated zones, a similar tendency was shown by FSpe. Finally, to explore the importance of including functional diversity I made a comparison between the taxonomic and functional β-diversity. This research showed close relations of herbivorous fishes with their environment, but I could not establish if the benthic composition shapes the herbivorous fish assemblage or the other way around. This research can be a baseline to start working in functional diversity in the Red Sea coral reefs, can help to understand what to expect in the evaluation of reefs in different health state and to identify which herbivorous fish species or groups are more vulnerable and more important according to their function for coral reefs.

This thesis deals with theoretical analysis of First Hop Redundancy Protocols. It describes Hot Standby Router Protocol, Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol and Gateway Load Balancing Protocol. It also shows examples of configuration of each protocol on Cisco devices with supported version of the Cisco IOS. Furthermore, this thesis includes design of two of these protocols, Hot Standby Router Protocol and Gateway Load Balancing Protocol, and their implementation in discrete event simulator OMNeT++ and Automated Network Simulation and Analysis library. Finally, the thesis presents results of testing of the implementations in comparison with actual Cisco devices.

Assessing genetic diversity of springtails (Collembola) across the Namib Desert and the potential role of environmental parameters in driving this diversity

Desert environments are characterised by harsh conditions and possess low biodiversity largely caused by abiotic factors such as; low precipitation, soil organic matter, high temperatures, high levels of evapo-transpiration, pH and salinity. These factors significantly reduce primary production, which influences the availability of food resources for deserts organisms. The diversity and the drivers of diversity for below ground invertebrates including Collembola (springtails) are relatively unknown in the Namib Desert. Previous morphological studies have found only five species on the basis of traditional taxonomy. This study assesses the diversity of Namib Desert Collembola and determines the effect of environmental parameters on this diversity, The diversity of Namib Desert Collembola was assessed using DNA Barcoding. The sequence information of the 178 Collembola specimens, taken from mitochondrial barcoding using the Cytochrome-c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, was analyzed and Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) were defined. Collembola community responses to soil physicochemical properties were investigated by using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). MOTUs were successfully indentified to family level (Isotomidae, Neanuridae and Sminthuridae). The researcher found a total of 30 MOTUs, most of which showed limited geographical localisation. The mtDNA COI (barcode) locus revealed high levels of previously unreported genetic diversity of Collembola in the Namib Desert. The RDA indicated that none of the soil physicochemical properties significantly drove variation in Collembola community composition. However, total soil nitrogen was shown to be a strong but not significant driver of variation in community composition (p<0,054). The taxonomic identification of the Collembola specimens was also attempted using traditional morphological analysis. A total of 23 individuals, collected from pitfall traps or extracted from soil samples, were selected for identification. Available European keys were used for identification to genus level where possible. A total eight of specimens were identified to genus level (Folsomides sp), 14 to family level (Entomobryidae) and one to order level (Symphypleona). Both Symphypleona and Entomobryidae were previously unreported from the Namib Desert. The Folsomides genus and the family Entomobryidae were the most abundant groups. This research suggests that soil dwelling Collembola in the Namib Desert have a much higher level of diversity than previously known.
