The design and implementation of a robust, cost-conscious peer-to-peer lookup service

Harvesf, Cyrus Mehrabaun 17 November 2008 (has links)
Peer-to-peer (p2p) technology provides an excellent platform for the delivery of rich content and media that scales with the rapid growth of the Internet. This work presents a lookup service design and implementation that provides provable fault tolerance and operates in a cost-conscious manner over the Internet.

Using a distributed hash table (DHT) as a foundation, we propose a replica placement that improves object availability and reachability to implement a robust lookup service. We present a framework that describes tree-based routing DHTs and formally prove several properties for DHTs of this type. Specifically, we prove that our replica placement, which we call MaxDisjoint, creates a provable number of disjoint routes from any source node to a replica set. We evaluate this technique through simulation and demonstrate that it creates disjoint routes more effectively than existing replica placements. Furthermore, we show that disjoint routes have a marked impact on routing robustness, which we measure as the probability of lookup success.

To mitigate the costs incurred by multi-hop DHT routing, we develop an organization-based id assignment scheme that bounds the transit costs of prefix-matching routes. To further reduce costs, we use MaxDisjoint placement to create multiple routes of varying costs. This technique helps reduce cost in two ways: (1) replication may create local copies of an object that can be accessed at zero transit cost and (2) MaxDisjoint replication creates multiple, bounded cost, disjoint routes of which the minimal cost route can be used to resolve the lookup. We model the trade-off between the storage cost and routing cost benefit of replication to find the optimal degree to which an object should be replicated. We evaluate our approach using a lookup service implementation and show that it dramatically reduces cost over existing DHT implementations. Furthermore, we show that our technique can be used to manage objects of varying popularity in a manner that is more cost effective than caching.

By improving its robustness and cost effectiveness, we aim to increase the pervasiveness of p2p in practice and unlock the potential of this powerful technology.

Quantificação volumétrica do ajuste interno em três sistemas de infra-estrutura cerâmica e um sistema de infra-estrutura metálica / Volumetric quantification of the internal fit in three systems of ceramic infrastructure and a system of metallic infrastrucuture

Ricardo Herzog Marchiori 14 December 2007 (has links)
Objective: Compare the quality of the internal fit of three kinds of ceramic infrastructures and one kind of metal infrastructure, universally used systems for total crown moulding. Methods: Starting from the preparation of a total crown master, 40 dies made of gypsum plaster, kind IV, were obtained and distributed at random in four groups (n = 10) that is: In-Ceram group, Procera group, Empress 2 group and Metal group.. After moulding, each infrastructure was individually cemented on the master die, ultra-low viscosity silicon adhesive was used to fill in the space between the infrastructure and the preparation area. After crown removal each replicate was weighed on a precision scale and was then separated in parts corresponding to the cervical wall interface and the occluso-axial wall interface; they were then weighed separately to get their volume. Results: Walls interface of infrastructure preparation/walls: Within this general estimate a statistically significant difference (P < 0,0001) was found between the studied groups. The main quantitative differences on the interface volume occurred between the In-Ceram group and the other groups. Occluso-axial walls interface of the infrastructure occlusal-axial preparation/walls: Here again, a statistically significant difference between the studied groups (P < 0,0001) is present. Main quantitative differences on the interface volume remain in relation to the In-Ceram group. Cervical wall interface of the infrastructure cervical preparation/wall: No statistically significant difference was found (P > 0,5) on the cervical interface volume between the Metal groups (least average) and In-Ceram, the latter presenting a slight increase on the volume of this interface, when compared to the first one. In relation to the Metal group, the cervical interface volume was greater in the Empress 2 group, followed by the Procera group, both showing a statistically significant difference when compared to the Metal group (P < 0,001 e P < 0,01 respectively). No statistically significant difference (P > 0,05) was found between the Procera and Empress 2 groups. Conclusions: Except for the relation of the cervical interface, the In-Ceram group showed the best results, followed by the Metal group, for internal fit. The Metal and In-Ceram groups presented the best performance in the internal fit, for the cervical interface. The results obtained suggest that these infrastructures are the most reliable ones regarding the internal fit considering the ones tested in this work.

These last two themes, in particular, caused a lot of upheaval in the Brazilian media because of the publication of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Sacrament Caritatis (AESC) published on February 22, 2007, which deals about the Eucharist, and in one of its sub-theme of the indissolubility of the marriage. The media, with the intention of spectacular the information, printed in the covers of printed and virtual newspapers that Pope Benedict XVI called the second marriage of social plague. With its emphasis in the word “plague”, the Pontiff’s statement provoked numerous replicas. In this context, it is objet of study in this thesis the dialogical analysis of replicas in the genre online commentary about the Christian-Catholic marriage. In this way, we try to answer the follow question: how does the active responsive understanding to concrete statements about the second Christian-Catholic marriage take place in the online commentary genre? In order to answer this question, it is our general objective to observe how dialogical relations and their ideological effects are given in the online comment genre. The methodology of data analysis was based on the social method of dialogical analysis of language proposed by Bakhtin/Volochinov (2010) whose methodological order for the study of language, starts from the types of verbal interaction then the statements and their genres and the forms of the language. The research corpus consists of two sets of data. One is the Pos-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Sacrament Caritatis and the second is composed by online, commentaries that have emerged as answer to this exhortation. The comments were taken from pages of larges portals, newspapers, forums and blogs, all posted in 2007, year in which the statement was built. The results of research indicate that: a) the concrete statement materializes from its sphere of production/circulation/reception. Thus, for the Christian-Catholic doctrine, marriage is a religious affair, because it is a bond established by God himself. Therefore, the divorce or any other practice that violates this sacrament is not possible; b) its social context cannot be removed from the word, because it is embedded in pragmatic situation that surrounds it. Thus, each word occupies the sense that they give to the sphere of circulation, the speakers, the situation of production, the ideologies, etc. In this way, the meaning is as plural as the contexts, which in turn are not ready, inert, but always in situation of verbal interaction; the subject does not have an alibi that exempt him from a subject of response, that is, when we are in front of a statement we are impelled to respond to him, albeit tardily, silently, verbally, gesture, etc. since we have with him a relation active responsive; d) the replica is constitutive of the dialogical relations that the subjects establish among themselves. Without a subject, without a dialogical relation, there is no replica.

Microstructural investigation of alloys used for power generation industries

Krishna, Ram January 2010 (has links)
Nickel based superalloys are currently being investigated for high temperature applications in advanced steam power plant operating at temperatures of 700˚C and above. Three nickel-based superalloys Inconel 617, Inconel 625 and Nimonic 263 alloys, which are of primary interest for boiler technology components such as furnace walls, superheater tubes, header and steam pipes, etc and for steam turbine technology components such as HP &IP cylinders, rotor forgings, casing and valve chest, blading, etc., have been evaluated for long and short term creep performance. Creep deformation processes occurring at high temperatures and stresses lead to the evolution of microstructures in the form of precipitation, precipitate coarsening and recovery effects. The deterioration in mechanical properties as a result of this microstructural change has been evaluated by hardness testing. This work discusses the microstructural evolution occurring in alloys in samples that have been creep exposed at a series of temperatures from 650°C to 775°C and for durations from 1000 to 45,000 hours using advanced FEGSEM, TEM, XRD and phase extraction techniques. The fractions and morphology of different phases, their locations during exposure to higher temperatures and probable creep fracture mechanism in these alloys are illustrated and discussed.

Effective Bayesian inference for sparse factor analysis models

Sharp, Kevin John January 2011 (has links)
We study how to perform effective Bayesian inference in high-dimensional sparse Factor Analysis models with a zero-norm, sparsity-inducing prior on the model parameters. Such priors represent a methodological ideal, but Bayesian inference in such models is usually regarded as impractical. We test this view. After empirically characterising the properties of existing algorithmic approaches, we use techniques from statistical mechanics to derive a theory of optimal learning in the restricted setting of sparse PCA with a single factor. Finally, we describe a novel `Dense Message Passing' algorithm (DMP) which achieves near-optimal performance on synthetic data generated from this model.DMP exploits properties of high-dimensional problems to operate successfully on a densely connected graphical model. Similar algorithms have been developed in the statistical physics community and previously applied to inference problems in coding and sparse classification. We demonstrate that DMP out-performs both a newly proposed variational hybrid algorithm and two other recently published algorithms (SPCA and emPCA) on synthetic data while it explains at least the same amount of variance, for a given level of sparsity, in two gene expression datasets used in previous studies of sparse PCA.A significant potential advantage of DMP is that it provides an estimate of the marginal likelihood which can be used for hyperparameter optimisation. We show that, for the single factor case, this estimate exhibits good qualitative agreement both with theoretical predictions and with the hyperparameter posterior inferred by a collapsed Gibbs sampler. Preliminary work on an extension to inference of multiple factors indicates its potential for selecting an optimal model from amongst candidates which differ both in numbers of factors and their levels of sparsity.

Application du prototypage rapide à l'aide au diagnostic en chirurgie traumatologique et orthopédique / Rapid prototyping helping diagnosis in orthopaedic and trauma surgery.

Debarre, Étienne 07 December 2011 (has links)
The medical imaging technologies allow the visualization of diseases and injuries. However, even if dynamic perspective ones, these views remain a virtual 3D visualization because on a 2D screen. Real replicas have therefore a definite advantage: they can make palpable the notion of scale and volume and apparent hidden or ambiguous details and thus enhance or facilitate the diagnosis and the surgical solution. The rapid prototyping allows to achieve a replica from a CAD file issued from imaging data but this process is now only applied to specific cases. Our work shows that it can be applied with profit for complex but usual orthopaedic and trauma surgery cases. It can be so transfered from the research laboratory to the hospital.A methodology is defined to manufacture an ABS replica through rapid prototyping by fused deposition modelling from DICOM3 data and digital 3D reconstructions using dedicated software. The study of the capability, transferable to any process, quantifies the response and the accuracy of the machine and the optimal parameters. Three applications (from CT-scan) are presented through three clinical cases (osteotomy, arthroplasty and trochleoplasty) . The examples show that the method is appropriate (and economically reasonable) when it comes to complex geometry or assessment of bone volume. The objective representation of the volumes is the strength of the method and the interest is undeniable in many areas of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology.

On the Consistency, Characterization, Adaptability and Integrity of Database Replication Systems

Ruiz Fuertes, María Idoia 30 September 2011 (has links)
Ruiz Fuertes, MI. (2011). Remembering Martyrdom: Delacroix's Massacre of Chios as a Site of Collective Memory

Burton, Colette 18 July 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The Massacre of Chios (1824) by Eugéne Delacroix illustrates the titular genocide from the Greek War of Independence. This genocide was a veritable razing of the entire island by Ottoman Turks in 1822. Today, a replica of Delacroix's painting resides on the island inside the entrance of the Chios Byzantine Museum, located in a converted mosque built on the ruins of a Christian church. This site is a case for the existence of non-Western temporalities, including liturgical and Aegean temporalities, as they pertain to the commemoration of the massacre through interaction with the replica. These temporalities are not causal or linear as in the West. On Chios, everyday interactions with history happen through the orthodox devotions and concomitant emotions of the present, with temporally transcendent icons, relics, and rituals promoting the imbrication of temporalities. The layout of the mosque, in its simplicity, conforms roughly to the plan of a Greek Orthodox church with the museum space organized to emphasize this, encouraging a liturgical temporality. Given that Chiots remember the massacre victims as tantamount to saints, the saturation of Christian elements in Delacroix's composition communes with the museum space to create an active site of memory, with the replica functioning like the Holy Greek Orthodox icons in the adjacent room, inviting a liturgical temporality. A comparable site, Agio Minas, a major massacre site in Southern Chios, also exhibits genocide victims as saints through eikonic imagery; here, victims' remains are displayed as relics alongside an icon of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, setting the stage, so to speak, for the naos where blood still stains the stone floor. In a similar way, the replica located in the "narthex" of the museum mediates a preparatory experience that overlays a narrative of Christian martyrdom onto the museum's "naos," where visitors engage with the icon collection. The proximity of replica and Byzantine collection overlays Chios' destruction with that of Constantinople's, collapsing time and presenting the two as related events. The Chios Byzantine Museum exemplifies what anthropologist Nicolas Argenti has termed "Aegean temporality," where past and present overlap in physical and incorporeal sites of memory. Orthodox icons do just that: transcendent and a-temporal by nature, their efficacy lies in bringing the pictured figure into the present moment and "enfleshing" remembrance as a current reality. The replica Massacre of Chios likewise acts as an active a-temporal object. Because of affordances granted by the narthex space and eikonic associations, it sacralizes the museum space into a living site of memory. With Aegean temporality facilitating a constant re-experiencing of the massacre, the massacre's presence and potency is not something left in the past. The painting's status as a semi-icon supports the immediacy of the massacre, as the viewer spiritually interacts with the image in the present.
